What is the key to a successful interior design project?
Always remember it not how you start a project, it's how you finish a project. The finishing details enhance the project: whether it's a pop of color or balance, it's needed. A client should call you back for another project, not to finish the one you started. This is combined with the ability to listen to the needs of your clients; decorating is not judged by the deco alone and the functionality is essential.
What is one important mistake many interior designers make? How have you overcome/avoided it?
Many interior designers tend to decorate a home as their home and not the client's home. Guided Home Designs is hired because our clients are unable to make their home feel and look as they invision. We find our clients know what they like and don't like and what makes them comfortable. It's our job to listen and get on the same page as them. We use photos or visiting pervious jobs. Houzz.com has been a huge tool for this, as we utilize their idea book. Our clients view the site and add their favorite photos to the idea book which we review. With this, we look for repeated design to establish a style and direction. Within a few discussions we can run with the project. Our out-of-town and out-of-state clients find this a great source.
Interior designing for others has shaped your career. How does your design aesthetic appear in your own home? Are you as passionate in designing your own personal spaces?
Our homes (Kristen and myself) are our showcase homes; we take pride in their appearances and are forever making changes. After a full day of designing, we could not feel fulfilled or relaxed in a poorly designed home. Loving our home is loving our job.
We love bringing new ideas into our home in keeping a fresh look. When we have an idea that is maybe a bit out of the box, we incorporate it into our home before introducing it to a clients.
