Maggie Betts’ West Village Townhome

Filmmaker Maggie Betts’ New York City townhome in the West Village has become a unique representation of three different lives, thanks to her two friends Barbara Bush, former First Daughter and current CEO of Global Health Corps, and Elliott Merck. Each apartment in the townhouse, built in the 1800’s, has similar architectural features such as the original fireplaces, all ornate and intricate in their own way. However, what truly makes the building special is the contrasting aesthetic of the tenants. Each separate apartment is a step inside the world of three very different people with a strong common bond.

Barbara Bush and Maggie Betts are childhood friends, and Bush moved into Betts’ building upon arrival to New York City. Although she has switched from various studios to her current, beautiful one-bedroom, she has never left the building. Bush’s apartment is full of light and air with Mexican influence attributed to her Texas childhood. Betts’ apartment is regal, opulent and full of delicate detail. Elliot Merck’s apartment is a beautiful blend of colors and textures, with quirky details such as his matchstick collection smartly displayed throughout the home.

Merck told Vogue “What drew me to this apartment was that I prefer older buildings. They have a charm that cannot be recreated.” The unaltered period details throughout the home do add a great deal of charm, and each of the three accents them in a different light. With the combination of great friends and great design, it is hard to imagine that they will ever want to leave.
