The Blackadore Caye Group recently received approval by the Belize government to develop Leonardo DiCaprio’s “Restorative Island,” which will be the most environmentally sustainable residential development to ever be built, on the island of Blackadore Caye in Belize.
Blackadore Caye is a 104-acre island near Ambergris Caye that was purchased by Leonardo DiCaprio about 10 years ago.
Facing challenges on their first design from local stakeholders and citizens, the developers went back to the drawing board and redesigned the project to address feedback from the local community. With the Environmental Impact Assessment for the project approved, construction will begin in early 2017.
The project, which will contain a luxury hotel resort, will consist of 36 estate homes and 36 bungalows.
According the Blackadore Caye Group website, “the project will contain a world-class luxury hotel resort centered on health, wellness and sustainability, off-the-grid living homes, a research station on climate change and habitat impacts, leading restoration programs, and more.” It will rehabilitate the ecosystem of the island, which currently suffers from overfishing, deforestation, and an eroding coastline.
The interior of the residences will have features that improve wellness through air and water quality and have circadian lighting, which improves waking and sleeping cycles with bluer tones during the day and warmer tones in the evening.
In partnership with National Geographic, Leonardo DiCaprio recently published a documentary on climate change called Before the Flood. Blackadore Caye will be an example of how we can develop and live in a sustainable and restorative way. The development will be powered by renewable energy, will be chemical free, and will increase the biological health of the island and waters surrounding it. It will serve as a model of restorative development for the world.
