Joan Rivers’ Extremely Lavish Upper East Side Penthouse Asks $28 Million

Poised just off Fifth Avenue at 1 East 62nd Street in the Upper East Side, Joan Rivers' palatial abode has just hit the market for $28 million.

The fabled Queen of Comedy's ultra-extravagant residence—whose 11 grand rooms total 5,100 square feet—is housed in the top three levels of an erstwhile mansion that was built during the Gilded Age for millionaire John Drexel, a structure that was later divvied up into numerous condominiums in the 1930s.

Beyond the awe-inspiring, fairytale-like residence's two kitchens, four bedrooms, and four-and-a-half baths, its pièce de résistance is comprised of two Louis XIV-inspired spaces: a ballroom and music room that each feature spectacular 23-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, golden antique boisserie paneling and columns, and double-height windows.

Though ideal for grand scale entertaining (it can comfortably accommodate up to 125 people), the opulent penthouse still offers a close-knit and cozy feel due to elements such as a wood-paneled library, a handful of fireplaces, and a dining room designed on an intimate scale, with French doors that lead out to one of two terraces overlooking Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.

Truly as unique, elegant, and outspoken as its late owner—who tragically passed away last September due to complications in surgery—the incredible home touts a luxurious master bath equipped with a marble soaking tub and a bespoke marble vanity. A separate two-bedroom, two-bath guest chamber—complete with its own spacious living room, fireplace, and kitchen—is also nestled within.

Corcoran Group's Leighton Candler is currently managing the celebrity property listing.
