Designed by “artisans who rebuilt Windsor Castle,” the “Astor Suite” at The Plaza Hotel has been listed with a price tag of $39.5 million, according to according to city records cited by Luxury Listings.
Facing Central Park and Fifth Avenue, the historic 4,284-square-foot unit was once inhabited by former residents, John Jacob Astor, the duke and duchess of Windsor, and John F. Kennedy, the listing states.
Its current owner, Jürgen Friedrich, the former fashion executive for Esprit, bought the apartment in 2007 for a little over $25 million.
The three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home was designed by a team commissioned by architect S.R. Gambrel Inc., with Old World details such as 14-foot hand-drawn plaster ceilings, English oak paneling, leather walls from France, and antique fireplace mantles.
Friedrich, who is from Germany, joined Esprit in 1976 and led the company’s European operations until 1997. He has retired in Switzerland, the fashion brand says.
The listing at 1 Central Park South is held by Melanie Lazenby and Dina Lewis of Douglas Elliman have the listing.
