To the untrained, ordinary mind, product prices might seem quite arbitrary... but in reality, the numbers printed on price tags aren't at all random: they're carefully calculated sums based on a bevy of factors, from material and manufacturing costs, to import and export fees.
Now until June 28th—from 11am to 6pm—curious consumers have a chance to learn the stories behind common items, from clothing to furniture pieces, and find out why exactly their favorite everyday objects cost the amounts that they do.
It's all thanks to a special open house created by a joint effort between Everlane and Taavo Somer's creative agency Friends & Family. The duo collaborated with a number of other design brands such as Kaufmann Mercantile, simplehuman, and ABC Carpet & Home to showcase a "home space" that reveals the origins and cost breakdowns of a slew of products.
"We encounter thousands of objects every day, and yet we're rarely told how those products are made and where they come from," says Everlane CEO and founder, Michael Preysman. "We've found that customers want to know that information."
Each of the pieces featured has a hangtag printed with its entire cost breakdown. Those who attend the event—located at 199 Lafayette Street—have the opportunity to browse, try on, and purchase Everlane products online. To top it off, for the first time ever, perusers can buy the online company's items in person.
