Canadian lighting designer Bocci launched its series of 73 cloud-shaped lamps at Paris' Maison et Objet last week.
"There is a strange mystery that occurs when these pieces are filled with light," Bocci creative director Omer Arbel told Dezeen, which revealed the mechanisms for Arbel's mystery: using pressurized gas, molten glass is forced into heat-resistant ceramic fabric shells in each of which the designers place an LED light.
When the lights are turned on, the lamps transform into "more than both glass and fabric... something new entirely," Arbel puts it. To viewers, their distinct and natural forms appear like clouds.
Bocci hung the 73 to descend in clusters, but a second rendition with lamps fixed flat against the ceiling may be underway.
In an earlier exhibition, Bocci garnered attention for the colorful chandelier it installed at London's V&A.
