A limited edition of the table-chair combination architect Daniel Libeskind created for Marina Abramovic's performance art piece—"Counting the Rice"—has been released by Italian brand Moroso.
"Marina has always been a great admirer of Moroso products, and personally chose many of our pieces for her private home in New York," said the brand's creative director, Patrizia Moroso. "The idea of working together on a shared project was a desire we had both developed over these past years."
Liebeskind's creation was an integral part of Abramovic's installation, in which participants sat at the table for a minimum of six hours, separating and counting grains of rice and lentils. While the original version of the table was constructed out of wood, the new limited edition is made out of concrete.
The ingenious structure of the piece is comprised of connected slabs of angled concrete which form the seat and table, the top of which leans toward the seated party and has a small ledge which prevents the beans and rice from rolling off.
Moros expounded in a statement, "The slab of cement folds over itself, enfolding and pushing the body to carry out the performance, while the vigorous gestural expressiveness of the form is embossed across its surface with complex geometries that give a sense of visual fragmentation."
The first in this limited edition set was recently presented and auctioned in Basel on September 20th.
