An elaborate estate, owned by Campbell Soup heiress Dorrance Hill Hamilton, in ritzy Newport, Rhode Island has been listed on the market for $12.5 million, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Hamilton named the residence “The Bird House” for the plethora of birdhouses that are positioned around the property. On the grounds near the pond, there is a detailed peacock sculpture, as well as plenty more bird embellishments, inside and out.
Built in 2012, the six-bedroom, eight-bathroom house, with 9,719 square feet of interior space, is sited on 3.67 acres in the historic Ocean Drive area, which is recognized for its extravagant estates.
A two-story entrance hall and living room, with a floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows, offer panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Though its design is traditional, the home is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, including geothermal heating and cooling, a three-level elevator, remote-controlled window treatments, and custom audiovisual equipment, according to listing agent Kate Kirby Greenman of Gustave White Sotheby’s International Realty.
Hamilton––who built the residence five years ago because she needed a living space without stairs, says her son, Matt Hamilton––died in April at age 88. She was a granddaughter of John T. Dorrance, a chemist who invented the process for condensing soup in 1897. He became the president of Campbell’s in 1914 and held the position until he died in 1930, the brand’s website states.
