The historic Hamptons home that inspired a documentary, an HBO movie, and a Broadway musical has been listed for the first time in decades for a pricey $19.995 million, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Known as “Grey Gardens,” the famed three-story residence at 3 West End Road in East Hampton, New York, sits on roughly 1.7 acres near Lily Pond Lane and Georgica Beach, the listing describes.
Built in 1897, it is one of the few original shingle homes that remain in the area and features approximately 6,000 square feet of living space.
The Washington Post columnist Sally Quinn and her late husband Ben Bradlee, former executive editor of The Washington Post, bought the home in 1979 from Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, who was the first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, for $220,000.
Beale and her mother appeared in a 1975 documentary, “Grey Gardens,” which depicts their lives in the then-crumbling mansion. A movie, starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, based on the documentary was released in 2009, followed by a Broadway musical.
Quinn and Bradlee restored the antiqued estate for an estimated $600,000 and added a tennis court and a swimming pool to its splendor. She said she furnished the house with décor pieces she found in the attic, such as Beale’s cabinet full of glass animals that is in the office.
The main house, with seven bedrooms and six-and-a-half bathrooms, has a traditional design with plenty of entertaining spaces. Hidden within its gardens, there is a stucco cottage, a heated gunite pool, and a Har-Tru tennis court.
The furniture is not included in the asking price, but Quinn said that she is open to selling it at an additional cost, The Wall Street Journal noted.
Quinn’s memoir, “Finding Magic,” not yet released, will recount many of her memories at Grey Gardens.
