Robert De Niro’s Former Greenwich Village Rental Lists for $40 Million

Actor Robert De Niro’s Central Park West apartment suffered fire damage in 2012.

But there was a silver lining in his playbook—he got to rent a gorgeous West Village duplex penthouse for two years. Now the 9,000-square-foot duplex with the Godfather pedigree is on the chopping block for $39.8 million. (Dolly Lenz Real Estate has the listing.)

Robert De Niro rented this West Village penthouse duplex for two years before heading back to Central Park West.

Anchored by a lush central courtyard and 5,200-square-feet of panoramic terraces (with views of the Hudson River and the Manhattan skyline), the sprawling five-bedroom, four-bathroom home at 165 Perry Street features a wood-burning living room fireplace, library, a gourmet chef's kitchen, another prep kitchen, and a massive 3,000-square foot seven-car garage (who needs seven cars in New York City?).

The duplex is anchored by a central courtyard which can be seen through this massive two-story window.

Inside, the contemporary home bathes in natural light, aided by a bright white color palette, tall ceilings, and a two-story-tall glass window. The residence's clean design is enhanced by contrasting black beams, black stairs, black railing, glass tile floors, and two balconies that overlook the bright grand hall. The master suite boasts two large windowed walk-in closets, an ensuite bathroom with a steam room, and presumably plenty of mirrors where the eventual buyer can practice De Niro’s “You talkin’ to me?” Taxi Driver stare.

The 71-year-old De Niro is likely the hardest working actor in Hollywood, with 103 credits on his resume reel, most memorably in films like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, Meet the ParentsSilver Linings Playbook, The Godfather Part II and Raging Bull—the latter two performances for which he won Academy Awards.

Now, for his real life family (just like the fictional family mantra from Silver Lining’s Playbook), it’s excelsior—New York’s motto meaning “onward and upward.” De Niro and his wife Grace Hightower reportedly upgraded uptown by renting Yankees star Alex Rodriguez’s Central Park West apartment, proving you can always come back home (or at least to the same Upper West Side neighborhood). Then again, De Niro, co-founder of the Tribeca Film Festival, is a native New Yorker who has lived comfortably downtown and uptown. All of New York is his neighborhood. Which still begs one question: is A-Rod now living at Yankee Stadium?
