Our friends at TopTenRealEstateDeals.com have rounded up a mix of noteworthy abodes currently up for grabs, including late actress and singer Lauren Bacall's classy condo, a 12,000-square-foot ski-in/ski-out chalet in Deer Valley, and an ultra-modern glass mansion that grazes the sky in Miami.
#1: Lauren Bacall's NYC Apartment
Located in The Dakota at Central Park West—one of New York City's most prestigious residential buildings—legendary performer Lauren Bacall's nine-room, Central Park-facing residence is now on the market for $26 million.
Boasting three bedrooms and four baths, the posh apartment was the home of the fabled film and Broadway star—who passed away just last year at the age of 89—for over half a century. Dripping with 19th-Century elegance, the home touts 13-foot ceilings, a foyer fireplace, 11-foot pocket doors, wainscoting, an original butler's pantry, plaster moldings, hardwood flooring, and shutter-framed windows, not to mention a 70-foot gallery that opens to its major common areas including the library, great room, and formal dining space. Outside there's also a Juliette balcony with a treetop view of the Park below.
The Dakota has been home to myriad celebrities, including Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, and John Lennon, who was slain right outside the building's entrance in 1980. The structure's exterior was also featured as the home of Mia Farrow's character in Rosemary's Baby.
#2: New Orleans Second Empire Chapel
Once owned by prolific gothic and erotica author Anne Rice—best known for her novel, Interview with the Vampire—this stuccoed Italianate mansion takes up a whole city block on Napoleon Avenue in Uptown New Orleans. Once a Catholic girls' school, Rice purchased it in 1993 and converted it into her own private residence, studio, and museum for her extensive doll collection. Ten years later she sold it to a developer who then divided it into 28 luxury condos, the greatest of which—the chapel—has now been finished and put up for sale.
The 5,000-square-foot space of St. Elizabeth's Condominium is the grandest unit in the building, featuring stained-glass windows, white walls, and refinished light wood floors. Now on the market for $4.95 million, the resplendent home—situated along the famed Mardi Gras parade route—consists of three bedrooms and five baths, along with a great room with 24-foot ceilings and a spacious dining area that opens to a modern kitchen. Downstairs there's a library, den, master suite, and laundry room, while upstairs overlooks the the great room and showcases a theater, two ensuite bedrooms, a separate full bath, a storage space, and a large utility room.
#3: Deer Valley Ski Home of the Year
Voted "Best Ski Chalet in the United States" in 2013 and 2014 by World Ski Awards, this 12,000-square-foot, ski-in/ski-out chalet features seven bedrooms including four master suites and a bunk room that can accommodate up to 25, along with 11 baths.
Named Villa Casa Nova, the grand estate—set to be auctioned off on March 28 with no reserve—also consists of three family rooms, three bars, a formal dining space, a library/office, a great room, three laundry rooms, and a skier's lodge complete with lockers, boot dryers, bar, lounge, and direct ski access. The abode's gourmet kitchen also comes with a wood-burning pizza oven and a coffee bar. To boot, there's also a spa with steam, sauna, and treatment spaces, along with a fitness center, on top of two hot tubs and six fireplaces. A caretaker's apartment with a separate entrance also sits on the grounds.
#4: Seattle Contemporary on Lake Washington
Perched on top of a hilltop overlooking Lake Washington in Seattle's town of Kirkland, this newly-designed home—now asking $2.188 million—features glass walls and large decks that reach outward from the 3,626-square-foot house, allowing for more space for entertaining.
The "green" abode—built by eco-friendly firm Unique Greenhomes and designed to be energy efficient—is comprised of five bedrooms and three baths, and is outfitted with an iPad-controlled Smart Home system. Notably, all of the fixtures, materials, and appliances used to construct the house were sourced from European manufacturers.
#5: Miami's Glass Sky Mansion
Tucked on the 40th floor of one of Arquitectonica's Brickell high-rise buildings, this rich Miami residence was immediately snatched up by "Queen of Mean" Leona Helmsley upon its completion in 1981, then sold soon after to Saudi sheik Saoud Al-Shaalan after he offered her a hefty profit.
The Sheik commissioned over two dozen Moroccan craftsmen to transform the palatial pad into an exotic and romantic mixture of Persian, Turkish, and Indian styles, inspired by the Taj Mahal. Al-Shaalan eventually unloaded the property onto real estate developer and antique weapons collector Anthony Tirri, who has now listed the striking six-bedroom, five-bath for $3.2 million. An ideal spot for grand-scale entertaining, the over-the-top home—punctuated by extravagant details of mosaic tile, carvings, and plaster work—features a mammoth great room along with a greenhouse-sunroom.
