A 450-acre residence situated atop Colorado’s Aspen Mountain is asking $40 million.
Referred to as “The Mountain,” the property, adjacent to the Aspen Snowmass ski resort, is listed for the first time since the Aspen Mountain Gondola opened in 1986, according to the listing.
Located on the southwest side of the mountain, a two-bedroom, 1,000-square-foot cabin is accessed via the Aspen Mountain Gondola and Castle Creek Road, by skis, snowcat, or snowmobile, as well as by car during warmer seasons of the year.
There are various cabins, once used for mining purposes, which are currently being rented out on the property.
Views of the Rocky Mountains, certain ski runs, and alpine meadows can be seen from the property.
The owner has the option to build more cabins at 1,000 square feet each.
In 2014, the property hosted the wedding of daughter Goldman Sachs alum Robert K. Steel, which resulted in complaints from neighbors and the county, says Cindy Houben, community development director for Pitkin County. Large structures, including a chapel, were built for the wedding, leaving the land unearthed and in need of repair. Following the event, Pitkin County passed a law prohibiting any tents over 1,000 square feet in rural and remote areas, Houben says.
The property has been restored since, according to owner John W. Miller.
The listing at 4300 Midnight Mine Road is held by Max Taam and Joshua Saslove of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.
