For this canal-front residence, interior designers Laila Colvin and Rafaela Simoes had to capture a sense of artistry and zeal, while bridging the gap between the original and renovated architecture.

As founders and creative directors, Laila and Rafaela have established Miami’s premier luxury interior design company, 2id Interiors. Regarded for their relevant and skillful approach to design, 2id Interiors is an award-winning, leading interior design firm servicing clients which are amongst today's well-known names in professional industries and entertainment spanning across South Florida, the U.S., and around the world with projects in Canada, Europe, and Brazil.

"The clients wanted the house to be modern but colorful. They also wanted to keep the Spanish character, but in a more contemporary fashion," said Simoes.

The original open staircase was the element that won over the clients. So, the duo made it the focus of the living area with a traditional wrought-iron railing and colorful ceramic tiles. The blue-and-white rug, made of Persian rug remnants, brings a graphic backdrop for the Brazilian-style furnishings in neutral fabrics.

A navy grass cloth covers the open shelving in the living area's built-in walnut cabinetry, which has a vertical slatted sliding panel that conceals the television when not in use.

Colvin explained, "The slatted panel is our signature. We always use it somehow."

In the dining area you can see a metal chandelier, a glass-topped table with an organic live-edged wood slab base, and a white-linen host chair counter alongside a Brazilian wood side chair with leather seats. It shows that the designers like to play with opposites in materials.

In the family room, the designers paired wood-sided tables with a blue plush velvet sofa and ottoman. Above, lining the wall, is a grouping of the family's favorite movie posters. The owners fell in love with a wooden sculpture Colvin and Simoes placed near a swivel lounge chair in a corner of the primary bedroom.

Overall, the house is a beautiful place to relax and have fun.

The Aston Martin Residences Miami is located on the exclusive Miami waterfront and has revealed its Signature Collection penthouses and residences.

The Signature Collection line is a personal invitation to the ultimate members-only community with unparalleled access and exclusivity at its core.

Contemporary architecture blends with art, which blends seamlessly with design throughout the magnificent sail-shaped luxury development. The elegant homes are harmonious inside, while floor-to-ceiling windows afford uninterrupted views of the ocean and Biscayne Bay.

Photo Credit: Elliott Stares Public Relations

Signature Collection owners will enjoy a range of privileges including a dedicated butler service and priority access to the Aston Martin Residences' private superyacht marina. Additionally, the Art Gallery located on the 52nd floor will create a secluded area for residents to appreciate an ever-changing canvas of contemporary art.

"I am delighted to announce the Signature Collection and share the very first images of the penthouses," said Germán Coto, CEO of G&G Business Developments.

Photo Credit: Elliott Stares Public Relations

"They're the pinnacle of luxury and elegance, style and beauty, and an inspirational collaboration between our architects and the Aston Martin design team. The Signature Collection is complemented by a specially-commissioned bespoke Aston Martin DB11 coupe or DBX Riverwalk Editions, which will enhance the Aston Martin lifestyle for our owners."

"From the start, this project has been a labor of love and I'm extremely proud of the pride and passion of everyone involved. We adapted to working safely throughout the pandemic and have reached floor 56 of 66 on schedule. The whole team is focused on completing the construction of our waterside jewel by the end of next year," continued Coto.

"The Signature Collection is the next level of luxury; the best of elegant living," says Marek Reichman, Aston Martin Chief Creative Officer.

"When we designed the interiors, ]we focused on the beauty of perfect proportions, affording the same attention to detail that goes into every Aston Martin. Fine craftsmanship, with an emphasis on comfort for the living spaces and bold, pioneering design for the amenity areas, has created an astonishingly beautiful development."

"Aston Martin Residences Miami is our first global real estate venture," Reichman expanded. "I think we have shown that good design is good design, whatever the medium. This is something that really excites us as a brand."

With clean lines and a monochromatic palette, this Hallandale Beach home steers away from formality warming its contemporary tones with soft textiles and rich wood.

Designed in a soft palette of grey and white with pops of vivid red, the living and dining spaces blend seamlessly together to define the great room. Porcelain tile flooring weeps through the main floor and connects to the outdoors. The plush, red-velvet “Mad King” armchair by famed designer Marcel Wanders catches the eye immediately.

In the dining area, a glass-topped table seats 10 guests comfortably on sophisticated black leather-clad chairs. Near the stairway, a stone wall reaches up to the second floor. Just off the entry, the wine room is a well-lit space fashioned with a grid-like bottle display.

In the clean-lined kitchen, Calacatta marble tops both the large island and a unique backsplash that extends up to the ceiling. Stylish, oversized counter chairs are a fun creation. They are dressed in metallic silver vinyl, each seating two comfortably.

Editor's Note: Kelly Dunn’s obsession with authentic expression is unparalleled and is the driving force behind her award-winning firm, FATHOM design company. She is sought out by her colleagues as an expert on out-of-the-box solutions and blending colors and textures in imaginative ways that breathe new life into the world of interior design. If you are only interested in what’s trending, walk on by. She is not the designer for you.

Here, she describes her recent project Eclectic Retreat.

This bedroom is about blending the old with the new and honoring your roots while embracing a bright and bold future.

The owners of this space are multi-faceted, well-traveled and down to earth, so we turned this bedroom into an authentic expression of their character and passions because at FATHOM design company we know that when you are surrounded by what feeds your soul you are more deeply replenished.

Every wall is dressed in a charcoal-colored grasscloth wallpaper from Thibaut. These dark, textured walls ground the room while exuding an overall calming and sophisticated vibe. It is the bed that takes center stage, though. Handmade in California, the sunburst caning draws you in, reminding you of simpler times even though it is juxtaposed with a sleek dresser and a retro, shag rug that’s modernized with a metallic sheen. This juxtaposition creates an equilibrium that you can feel as soon as you walk in.

The stunning cobalt blue vase was hand blown by the incredibly talented team at Tightrope in Brooklyn, NY. It casts an electrifying, creativity-inspiring hue as it filters the sun’s light.

Modern lighting from Lume Room on Howard Elliot’s blue mirrored nightstand is paired with a custom-made, traditionally styled ceiling fixture by ABC Lighting in New Jersey adding a deeper level of intrigue to the space. Natural elements, animal prints, modern art, and a 12 string guitar all contribute to the diverse character of the room and reflect the inhabitants' many interests.

Overall, this space is the ideal eclectic retreat. Traditional pieces, modern touches, and contemporary art blended to reflect a life well-lived.

Minimalist design does not mean boring or basic. It may appear simple, but that’s just an optical illusion architect, designer, and artist Luciana Fragali has been perfecting for decades. The Brazilian-born designer produces exceptionally luxe spaces as a result of her innovative way of thinking and the unique materials and techniques she utilizes. “A project is not about decorating, but about figuring out the DNA of a space,” she says.

For this 7,718-total-square-foot oceanfront residence at Surfside’s Fendi Chateau, Fragali was tasked with giving this 5 bedroom 7 bath home a relaxed feel while emulating elegance and grandeur. The clients, who she met when they popped into her Miami-based architecture and design firm Design Solutions, had purchased this residence as a second home but while they knew they wanted warm and cozy elements – had no idea how to achieve it. Fragali’s architectural background and experience made her the perfect choice. Plus, she shared the clients’ appreciation for a minimal aesthetic that encompasses a sense of timeless beauty. “Clients know I’m going to give them a home that’s a reflection of their needs, personality, and culture,” she says.

Although the owners appreciated the high-rise building’s modern architecture by famed Florida-based firm Arquitectonica, they preferred a softer design for their own space. To set the tone from the outset, Fragali covered the walls in the foyer and great room—which contains the living and dining areas—with a mixture of fluted and non-fluted wooden panels. “It adds a softness, but it still has strength,” she says. The warm, tactile result counters the modern edge of the gleaming terrazzo marble flooring.

Inside, Fragali pays homage to the cerulean ocean and verdant landscape with a limited yet sophisticated natural palette of materials and colors. Leather, linen, glass, walnut, light, and shadow all take center stage here without visually competing. To add symmetry and simplicity to the unit, Fragali designed an elaborate system of invisible doors. The flawless systems seamlessly integrate into space so that they disappear when not in use. In the living room, she created a custom recessed wood ceiling in a sharp-edge architectural design that resembles delicate pieces of origami with integrated LED lighting as a way to make them seem higher.

Throughout the home, furniture is sourced from all over the world and from trusted partners such as Baxter, Poltrona Frau, and Artefacto. Unique pieces from these stores were responsible for adding that much-needed charm for example the statement piece selected for the ocean-facing living room displayed Artefacto’s natural wood coffee table, perfectly accompanied by Poltrona Frau’s Archibald lounge chairs – offering the perfect combination of substance and form. For Fragali, the dining room is the heart of the home. Here, she chose an oversized white lacquered table paired with Artefacto’s white leather- Infinity chairs that seat guests in the center of it all. Imagine a stunning display blooming above you, enter two Sky Garden pendants making a powerful impression with their sheer size- standing beneath it, you will see the intricate design that gives this piece its name.

The unit has a flow-thru plan from east to west, which allows the clients to enjoy both Atlantic Ocean views and western sunset views over the bay and Intracoastal Waterway. In the hallway leading to a masterfully designed family room, Fragali strategically placed a full-length mirror resting on wooden panels for depth accompanied by captivating artwork emitting tranquility and charisma. Emerging from this enchanting corridor you will be met with a modern yet earthy fashioned family room where earth tones take center stage. “Earth tones are inviting, relaxing, and lend well to a lot of different decor styles. The best part about earth tones in decor is you can switch up your decor easily without removing the bulk of your furniture.” Says Fragali. Earth tones are usually browns, beige’s, greens, and grays. When done right you can have a contemporary, modern, or bohemian room look well put together and be a relaxing environment. The trick is to keep almost everything neutral but to have just a few things that stand out. Here Fragali used the fierce crimson red offered by Lumen’s Twiggy floor lamp for that pop of color while also relying on textiles, fabrics, and accessories to tie in the room.

When asked to design the ultimate tv wall unit Fragali turned to her trusted millworker Diego Fulia of Fulia Inc, after 15 years of partnership – he was able to anticipate her needs and fabricate exactly what Fragali envisioned. Using a mixture of textured wallpaper, fluted wood panels, and natural wood for shelves this vision came to life – add the accessories and what you ultimately have is a family room your guests won’t want to leave and two exceptionally delighted clients left to enjoy sunset views over the bay.

Nestled in the gated community of Hammock Lakes lives Hammock House, a stunning Tropical Modern Custom-Home curated by renowned Architect + Builder, Giorgio Balli. The home sits deep into the site surrounded by several mature oak trees and its neighboring Hammock, guarded by a 6’ property wall.

Commissioned by NBC’s George to the Rescue, Riese Design, Inc. came aboard this project to help a family live and function more efficiently. The project scope included a complete makeover on the first floor of a home which encompassed the office, living room & dining room. The client's biggest pain point was lack of organization and storage while additionally having a lack of ability for a room to multifunction.

In this case, the homeowner was running an entire department for a non-profit organization out of a very small office with limited storage leaving her feeling both helpless and overwhelmed. At the same time, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this set of parents had three children homeschooling, making workspace an issue. All three children used the dining room as their classroom which overcrowded the room, to say the least. The living room was also in dire need of an update since it was situated between the office and the dining room, we obviously had to provide a nice cohesive flow.

To solve these problems, we gave the homeowner a large desk to be able to work and video conference along with custom-built storage for all of her filing needs. The room was also wrapped in beautiful wallpaper to provoke a calming energy to balance the stress of work.

In the living room, Riese Design provided a custom sofa along with décor and accessories to not only make the family comfortable but also keep within the pallet from the office providing fluidity throughout the open spaces. In the dining room, Riese Design provided a multi-functioning solution including a custom built-in outfitted with interior electrical outlets, making storing and charging devices such as computers both hidden and convenient. Inside of the built-ins, Riese Design also provided storage for each respective child’s schoolwork to maintain the organization of the space. When devices and paperwork are away the room serves as a traditional dining room for families to convene and enjoy a meal together. This project was both special and an honor to be a part of.

Editor's Note: Hafsa Burt has been practicing architecture for 21 years. Burt has been running her own studio, hb+a Architects since 2009. She also founded a development arm for the firm called Box Lab which is focused on active research and development in product and space design and zero energy/zero carbon buildings. An environmentalist, Burt adopted the 2030 challenge a decade ago and is a huge proponent of high-performance buildings. Her focus includes eliminating toxins with indoor air quality as a specialty. She actively speaks on the topic of indoor air quality as it relates to the practice of architecture and is an industry expert on “Healthy Building Practices”.

Today she is sharing her design process on her project Box Factory.

Photo Credit: Branded Content Media, Doug Birnbaum

The project is a prefabricated, zero energy/zero carbon single-family residence of 1750 sq. ft. The intent was to explore construction efficiencies and produce a project resilient to climate emergencies. I, as the architect, set ambitious goals upfront to achieve a truly off-grid project that relies only on renewable energy for all its functions. The project is a zero energy, zero carbon home with R-50 insulation to further conserve energy. Ahead of electrification mandates in California, the project proves to be a successful, working example of electrification not dependent on fossil fuels.

Photo Credit: Branded Content Media, Doug Birnbaum

The interior explores minimalist architectural form to inspire through light and color, its relationship to the land, and sweeping views. The design focus is on space and resource preservation that grasps a visitor as soon as they enter the home.

Photo Credit: Branded Content Media, Doug Birnbaum

The site’s ecosystem is also preserved and most of the 9 acres remain pervious and welcome to wildlife. The topography was used to the fullest for drainage, views, and orientation. An existing creek on the site has also been left untouched. The project has a patent pending for its unique custom features and has been customized to the site’s unique characteristics for optimum sustainability. An important goal of the project was to make use of prefabricated efficiencies to significantly reduce construction time and waste. The project beat all its goals. Prefabricated elements have been greatly customized for beauty, efficiency, and sustainability.

Photo Credit: Branded Content Media, Doug Birnbaum

hb+a Architects’ motto is “Zero (energy/carbon) is everything” and for the past 20 years, explorations into environmental sustainability, Indoor Air quality, and the health of the planet and its people have been the firm’s prime focus. With sweeping views, the project serves as a retreat for industry peers and climate activists.

The home was built in the 1920s and was recently renovated through the teamwork of architect, Kobi Karp, and builder, Probuilt Group. An addition was added for a large Master Bedroom Suite, pool, cabana suite, etc. The house is a 2 story, approximately 4,450 sq ft, 4 Bedroom with on-suite bathrooms, plus a separate, private Cabana Suite above the Outdoor Kitchen and extra-large Master Suite.

There’s no denying that city life is incredible. But with so much going on, it’s essential to take a step back now and then and give those tired batteries a bit of a recharge. Sometimes you just want to get away from it all: not in a camping, backwoods sort of way, but in a more cocktail-sipping, sun-seeking kind of fashion. It was precisely this type of escape a Brazilian family sought when they purchased a vacation retreat on Fisher Island as a respite from their hectic city life in São Paulo. Home to free-roaming peacocks, it captures the allure of a secluded island, but it also has all the luxury amenities of an exclusive resort. “It never feels crowded, and people really appreciate the privacy and security,” the wife says. Set on the farthest point of the island, their condominium overlooks miles and miles of ocean. “It’s our happy place,” the wife says. “It’s where we go to decompress.”

Originally weighed down by heavy traditional details—dated wallpaper, mirrored walls, and a cumbersome enclosed kitchen that interrupted the great room—the condo underwent a lofty transformation from dated Mediterranean to beachy chic thanks to Miami-based designer Luciana Fragali, who has designed multiple Fisher Island homes for her clients. “Luciana is so flexible and willing to listen to our ideas,” the wife says. “She created family-friendly rooms, so we never have to worry about sand from the beach.”

Although working on an island would seem like a dream, in this case, it posed some unique challenges. On Fisher Island, you can build only six months out of the year and subcontractors must arrive via barge, making preparation and timing paramount. Luckily, Fragali was able to work around these obstacles and transform the space entirely to feature new floors, walls, plumbing and electrical, appliances, materials, and finishes – this was a gut remodel of the entire apartment that took a great deal of effort and teamwork.

From the beginning, Fragali had one goal in mind: to open up the views. The owners asked for an expansive entertainment area, as well as comfortable guest rooms that offered privacy, making the vacation retreat as inviting as possible for their family and friends. To accomplish this, Fragali began by demolishing the enclosed kitchen wall to open up the space and transform the room into a spacious open concept living room and dining room featuring an exceptional dropped wood ceiling design.

“We opened the kitchen up to integrate the living room and to make it one large space,” explains Fragali, who removed a dividing wall to make that happen. The resulting open area is more spacious and takes advantage of the beautiful sunset views. Next, she replaced the mirrored covered walls with custom built-in shelves that become one with the living area. Using this accent wall, she placed unique accessories that reflect the natural light and turquoise waters below. “As soon as you open the door, you feel like you are literally on the ocean,” the wife says.

Keeping the emphasis on the panorama, expansive sliding doors open completely onto a balcony, essentially disappearing and expanding the living area into an enormous entertaining venue. “This indoor-outdoor effect alludes to the home’s refined yet casual vibe,” Fragali says. For the furnishings, she selected low-profile pieces that speak to the owners’ low-key personalities. “The wife likes clean lines and is very pared-down,” she says. “So I wanted a warm, sophisticated apartment with pops of color.” The designer captured this casual elegance through a careful juxtaposition of pieces that blur the line between modern and earthy, such as the pairing of custom-made floating console matching the natural birch dining room pendants and textured wallpapered wall niches with LED strip for radiance accented with black and white art frames.

While the water views clearly inspired Fragali’s approach, they also influenced the palette, with touches of warm creams, natural wood tones, upholstery, artwork, and accessories throughout. Even the master bedroom is awash in the soothing, ethereal hue. The master bathroom was another obstacle of its own – it had to be completely gutted down to the studs. Only then could Fragali begin to design a new luxurious master bath unlike any other featuring a large shower and a curved freestanding bathtub backed by wood mosaic wall panels.

But nowhere does the color scheme come more to life than on the balcony, where shades of sea and sky continue as far as the eye can see. From here, the family waves to cruise ships passing by. With umbrella-accented drinks in hand, they kick back and relax just the way they imagined, in true vacation style.

Minimalism in interior design is about clarity and a sense of zen, but all too often we get hung up on minimal texture and minimal color. The best spaces are the ones that take risks and in this living room, we dared to let a few knockout pieces stand for themselves. We grounded the space with natural elements while infusing a rich color palette with soft, luxurious texture.

This one-of-a-kind sofa was found in a warehouse buried under bolts of fabric and lovingly named, Giuseppe. Covered in a Ralph Lauren crushed velvet, its chesterfield style paired with mid-century modern legs is the epitome of luxe and sophistication. It softens the cold stone of the magnum fireplace yet stands strong on its own. No throw pillows necessary.

The unique tree sculpture next to the sofa was actually a fallen tree at one point that was stripped and charred and now repurposed as natural art, adding intrigue, texture, and warmth. The way it stands formidable and opposite the fireplace is an irony that deepens the character of the space.

We wanted textural window treatments, but for this application, we chose to think outside the box. Whenever you do something unexpected in interior design you breathe life into the space, giving it a pulse as this creates a sense of safety and desire. We cut thousands of strips of carpet binding and knotted them onto a galvanized pipe that acted as our curtain rod. The result is a stellar covering that filters the light and blends with the walls so naturally, you get the feeling you’re under a weeping willow tree. Pair that with the silk rug and oversized art and you are left with a calming, luxurious space evoking a personality all its own.

What do you do when there’s not a client- I mean no one to specifically design for- when staging a home to be sold? The answer, of course, is that you have to invent a story. I found this out when I was asked to stage this home for a prominent developer here in Miami, Florida.

There is a reason why today’s hottest architects and interior designers are referred to as starchitects and design celebs. Their designs are just spectacular. Enter 835 E Dilido Dr. Created by the renowned firm Design Solutions and award-winning interior designer Luciana Fragali, the home is an oasis of luxury in Miami’s Venetian Island neighborhood.

This magnificent Venetian Islands estate has 99 feet of Biscayne Bay frontage, showcased by 12-foot-high retractable Vitrocsa windows that blur the line between inside and out. The sweeping, open-plan interior leads directly to deep terraces, a zero-edge pool with an integrated spa, a cabana kitchen, and an Ipe wood dock.

Inside the beautiful form and exceptional function continues. Rich materials and bespoke details make the large, 7, 112 sq. ft. home feel handcrafted and intimate. The home’s concept—neutral and layered—was informed by Fragali’s Brazilian heritage.

“A lot of my inspirations come from Brazil,” she says, “which I think is the design capital of the world—I’m proud of my people.” But she adds that she’s over the rustic finishes that many associate with the country’s aesthetic. Fragali counts on Brazilian designers such as Jader Almeida as inspirations and this home was no exception. Generous spaces set the stage to showcase custom pieces by Jader Almeida, making this home truly unlike no other. Though with regard to this Venetian Island project, their influence is hard to discern except around the edges: Design/Solutions is doing something all its own.

“I always advise clients to go neutral for big spaces, so they don’t get bored,” Fragali says. So when it came to designing this home, color was saved for accessories, which could be mixed and matched and rotated. Fragali knew that the concept needed an injection of warmth through texture, artwork, curtains, and accessories. These accessories are used to elevate the design and functionality of this modern yet comfortable living space.

Even within its limited palette, the family room carries mighty visual interest—and coziness. The TV hangs from a rich marble wall with a matte finish, above a custom floating shelve. The walnut wood backing for the marble slab features a simplistic design and exudes the warmth that was the designer’s goal. The beige sofa and black accent chairs are from Jader Almeida.

The living room is a variation on the theme, perhaps a shade more formal. Another Jader Almeida sofa appears, the orthogonal design of the elevated base of turned feet with continuous seat and the large feather pillows, attract for a pleasant experience in the living environment. The Basic sofa is an expression of the signature of contemporary design. Wooden Easy armchairs back up against the million-dollar water view, while six Jader Almeida pendants frame the dining room table creating an aesthetic that is both industrial and sophisticated.

The large office features a privacy glass feature and private bath, with courtyard views. Upstairs, two guest rooms feature wide bay views, in addition to the secluded master suite which also offers two balconies, an Ornare closet, and a private gym.

Starting with a builder’s creation, Jule designed and coordinated the landscaping, interior layout, all cabinetry, materials, fixtures, and finishes, as well as all the furnishings for this 7K sq. ft. home.

Most of the living areas are connected to the outdoors via significant entryways and doors. Lighting, planting, paint and finishes were added to outdoor areas to entice outdoor living. Using worldly influences in selecting lighting and furnishings, one feels touched by a timeless embrace.

Photo Credit: Ethan Sharkey Photo Credit: Ethan Sharkey

The Foyer is embraced by a customized staircase with terracotta, glass & slate tile, with an iron and espresso stained handrail. Casual furnishings are complimented with a colored glass pendant, and a sequined throw. The Powder Room becomes a statement with an alabaster pedestal sink, iridescent black glass recycled tile, and customized walnut plank flooring.

The barrel-vaulted Hallway’s ceiling is accentuated by customized sconces, a built-up wood base, and a conceptual photo of sand dunes as a focal point, drawing one to enter the music room. The Music Room is adjacent to the rear pool patio and has custom cabinets for the owner's collection of media packaging and his passion for high-end acoustics. The bathroom vanity – used as a vestibule to the shower area and additional music storage and display. The custom terra cotta tile and complemented by the rich green cabinets and glass tile accents.

The Kitchen is both warm and clean, using warm white lacquer painted cabinets, seeded glass door, wrought iron hardware, and built-up crown molding. Tropical mosaic tile and slate is used for the backsplash. Jule added corbels to accent the café seating area, and classic and understated light fixtures. The table is hammered copper, slightly patina’s, then sealed.

The Sitting Room and Dining Rooms are adjacent to the entry courtyard. Jule customized the fireplace and ceiling to create a warm and inviting area, with a custom settee-chaise, wrought iron & glass lighting, and detailed accents. The dining table was custom made to ground the dining chairs from West Elm. The cabinet was found at an estate sale. Photo Credit: Ethan Sharkey Photo Credit: Ethan Sharkey

The Master Suite consists of a private entrance, foyer vestibule, spa bathroom, walk-in closet, living area, bedroom and private lanai. Featured here, the master bedroom and bath create a clean, fresh, open, yet warm interior to become a soothing respite to the private, spa-like lanai.

I completely remodeled the existing layout, creating an open layout and spaces that have an effortless flow, architectural details that are practical, yet sensual. Removing the wall between the bedroom and living area, I designed a gentle arching opening held by linen drapes, and a central double-sided fireplace with a media screen above. The vaulted ceiling was created with distressed rafters, specialty AV, and ethnic ceiling fans. The floors are custom, espresso-stained wide plank white oak by a local craftsman. I added sconce lighting on either side of the linen headboard, to accent the soft, soothing gray Benjamin Moore painted wall. The furnishings are a collection of found and refinished vintage pieces, Restoration Hardware, and custom designs. The bedding is a cool linen, in soothing greys and creams.

The Master Bathroom was completely redone with a new layout, to feature a modern sculptural soaking tub in front of a custom Indonesian teak screen to soften the intense southern exposure and add a contrasting background. I selected a brushed finish for the limestone flooring. The light fixtures were sourced from Morocco, and the electrical components were installed locally for code compliance. The custom-designed shelving units of either side of the tub create accessible niches for bathing supplies and ambiance.

Also in this bathroom, are his and her vanities, a steam shower with aromatherapy, and a private toilet room. Adjacent to the master bath, is a customized walk-in dressing suite. I removed a few walls in this closet to create an organized and Boutique mood for this shared room. This island was custom-designed to include locking jewelry drawers and pull out laundry hampers. I designed the open closet system was designed to organize the couple while creating an ambiance worthy of their taste.

As a second home to this local Hawaiian couple, they wanted a custom environment that was modern, clean, yet warm and inviting, and utilized the Koa wood flooring that was a gift from a family member.

Additionally, the homeowners had survived a hurricane in 1992, and wanted a home that was designed and built to withstand a storm, while also being open to views, natural breezes and embraced the outdoors with open-air living areas.

I created a design to incorporate the requests, with custom furnishings and architectural details which behold a classic tropical atmosphere. With contracting woods for the media cabinet, coffered ceiling and furnishings, I was able to complement the Koa wood with lighter finishes of beech wood, maple, limestone, and luminous plaster.

Creating finish details, such as a custom linen and silk throw for the chaise, a custom rug to become a piece of modern art and a built-in settee for the game room, have brought forth a truly custom home for this client.

Editor's Note: Haute Design partner Jule Lucero worked closely with the owners and architect of this Hawaiian oasis to create a modern, yet inviting home.

This house sits on the East facing hillside of Lanikai, the prestigious, yet quaint town in Kailua, on the island of Oahu. The house had experienced some damage from the elements due to a leaking roof, windows and doors. The owners wanted a home which embraced the vast views of the Pacific, the tropical sunlight, and the cool Tradewinds from the East. In addition, the home owners requested an environment for evening entertaining, and an inspiring artists atmosphere.

Jule created a design concept that speaks to the modern architecture, the tropical geography, and the easy, elegant lifestyle of the homeowners. Maple flooring with a water-based sealer was used throughout the main level, which is offset with Basalt-like, Absolute Black tiles for the entry, with a flamed finish, which grounded the modern materials with the rustic architectural concrete walls.

For the kitchen, Jule created an open, yet functional layout. She selected a green Limestone for the counter, fresh white cabinets, matte green glass tile, and stainless steel. The windows were replaced with wide Jalousie and Awning style to invite in the cooling trade winds. The doors were replaced with glass sliders and sidelights in a warm grey, almost white. Heavy interior columns were replaced with minimal steel posts to maximize the open concept between spaces. The ceiling was redesigned to incorporate a new skylight to ease the light level contrasts, and a washed wood tambour between the painted rafters.

The adjacent dining room is the center of the main floor. Jule created a focal wall on the opposite side of the dining buffet wall, which ends short of the ceiling, again, to invite lighting and airflow. For the furnishings, Jule selected contrasting materials & textures with elegant lines. The result is an atmosphere which is timeless, classic, elegant and inviting.

The project at Casa Del Mar was part of a complete gut out renovation of a 1960’s-era condo in beautiful Key Biscayne, Florida with a stunning ocean view.

The clients, a family of five, wished for a large, welcoming, functional space to entertain guests; add a room with a private bathroom, and seamlessly integrate the kitchen with the living and dining areas.

Our goal was to transform the outdated, closed-off kitchen into a lively flowing space where the family and their guests could enjoy the view and each other’s company. The challenge to transform the closed floor plan into an open, integrated space was further complicated by the aging building and outdated plumbing, A/C and electrical ductwork, as well as the elevator lobby.

Also, extant in the space were structural columns that could not be removed, resulting in a chaotic, narrow, L-shaped kitchen layout with limited storage. We designed a curved wall dressed with wood mosaic connecting the foyer and living area to the kitchen, softening the harsh, constrained angles of the original layout and laying the groundwork for a motive of curves and circles which carried throughout our design.

To maximize storage and spaciousness, we camouflaged appliances behind false doors, grouping the tallest appliances together to achieve balance and flow. In lieu of an island for the kitchen, we added a dining table in the center of the design, allowing the client to fulfill their passion for entertaining while integrating the social spaces of the residence with the functional space of the kitchen.

A large yet delicate sculptural chandelier continued to explore this sense of curvature and transparency. Through a game of proportions, scale, and continuity, we transformed a small, outdated space into a contemporary retreat perfect for a dinner party with a spectacular ocean view.

Photo Credit: Courtesy of PARAMOUNT Miami Worldcenter

PARAMOUNT, the world’s most-equipped residential tower, known for its innovative flying car Skyport, will host the exhibit entitled: “Miami 2020 and Beyond” featuring the PAL-V (Personal Air Landing Vehicle) Pioneer flying car and an impressive contemporary art collection including “Red World” by renowned artist Steven Manolis, and “Miami Vice” and “Moons Over Miami” by Miami’s hometown museum-class graffiti artist Ahol Sniffs Glue (also known as David Anasagasti). Ahol Sniffs Glue's works in the development, featuring his trademark's "eyes" in spray paints blend seamlessly with PARAMOUNT's lobby and urban design.

Photo Credit: Courtesy of PARAMOUNT Miami Worldcenter

The Dutch-made PAL-V Pioneer – already in production and selling for $599,000 with 70 flying cars already sold – comes with retractable overhead and rear propellers and tail wings, and can cruise at an altitude as high as 12,500 feet. Using automobile gasoline instead of jet fuel, it reaches speeds of 200 miles per hour in the air and 100 miles per hour on the ground.

PARAMOUNT's 58th floor Skydeck is designed so it can be modified in the future as a Skyport with a hydraulic floor capable of transforming its rooftop pool into a take-off and landing pad for flying cars.

“We are delighted to support, promote and celebrate innovation as well as prominent local and international artists at PARAMOUNT Miami Worldcenter,” said developer Dan Kodsi. “Miami is the city of the future and an international art world capital.
Paulo Bacchi, CEO of Artefacto, brought in top renowned designers for this one-of-a-kind residence, resulting in a masterful unit. Brazilian designer Debora Aguiar based the creative process for this apartment in an organic beach sophisticated concept, using natural fibers, light colors, recycled wood materials, always considering the sculptural fiber cement exoskeleton. The recipient of AIA Miami’s 2017 Merit Award for Interior Architecture, Diaz-Velasco was named a 2018 ASID Ones to Watch Scholar and Design Excellence winner, recognized as a rising leader pushing the boundaries of the industry. Here, we sat down with Diaz-Velasco who gives us an inside look into her latest sky-high project situated in the heart of Brickell, Florida. The project's main objective was to incorporate a sustainable space for catering and entertainment with masculine, geometric and elegant elements.

This project was a total gut renovation of a 1970s-era two-bedroom condominium to meet the needs of a young bachelor, with balcony terraces and floorplan revised to create an integrated and open space for entertaining. Ample storage, an open layout, and abundant natural light melded with a masculine, geometric, and "uncluttered" style. The black and white color palette and natural wood accents added warmth, with natural stone coverings on main surfaces accentuating key architectural features to capture sleek, sensitive elegance laced with edgy, contemporary craftsmanship.

We worked to design a space suitable for entertaining, with plenty of seating, room for gathering and movement, and an inviting, modern aesthetic. Spacious storage structures comprising clean lines and natural materials fulfilled the client’s “uncluttered” vision while serving as a stately, eye-catching canvas for gentle reflections of natural light. At the client’s request, we improved the quality of artificial light in the space while simultaneously taking advantage of the natural light already existent in the structure.

Attention to detail and craftsmanship was key: high-quality materials imbued the space with compelling yet minimal palettes of texture and color, while also remaining within the client’s budget constraints. The result was a refined, welcoming, and – above all – functional design that transformed an outdated structure into a contemporary, desirable kitchen space.

This project has received the 2017 AIA Miami Merit Award for Interior Architecture, the Gold Medal for Best Kitchen Under $100,000 in the 2017 KBDN Kitchen & Bath Design Awards, Third Place Powder Room in the 2019 NKBA Professional Design Competition, and winner of the 2019 IIDA Bragg Award for Residential – Single-Family Project. The project has also been named a Finalist in the 2019 Wolf-SubZero Kitchen Design Contest and has been selected by notable design industry educator Ellen Cheever as a teaching tool for an interior designer education course (CEU approved by IDCEC, NKBA, NARI and AIA) to train the next generation of design professionals.

This complete structural makeover of a two-story 1978 penthouse sought to integrate the kitchen and social area, creating an open layout allowing houseguests to interact more fluidly, while taking advantage of the natural light afforded by a reconfigured, double-height view of Miami’s Biscayne Bay. Materials were chosen to lend richness and texture to the space, defining proportions and ratios, with an emphasis on clean, compelling lines to complement the clients’ entertaining objectives while embodying a warmer, “Modern Eclectic Contemporary” feel. Custom furniture including a sleek, youthful bar and seating as well as oversized artwork emphasize proportion in the two-story space while maximizing the space’s relationship to the double-height view. The design aimed to toy with depth and drama, employing a custom geometric chandelier, streamlined furniture, and glimpses of color to create a welcoming, interesting, and eye-catching space.

Design Statement:

The owners bought this two-story 1980s penthouse to live out their golden years and entertain their large family. In the original structure, the kitchen and social area were separated; one design objective was to integrate these spaces, creating an open layout that allows houseguests to interact more fluidly, while taking advantage of a reconfigured, double-height view of Biscayne Bay.

Materials were chosen to lend richness and texture to the space, defining proportions and ratios, with an emphasis on clean, compelling lines to embody a “Modern Eclectic Contemporary” feel. Oversized artwork; furniture from Patricia Urquiola, Poltrona Frau, Luminaire, and Jaider Almeida; a custom-designed Ornare kitchen; rugs from the Rug Company; and a custom geometric lighting fixture in the dining area emphasize proportion in the two-story space, while maximizing the space’s relationship to the double-height view.

The original layout of the space featured a floating staircase in the middle of the foyer/living area, interrupting the flow of the living space. Ceilings were low due to an outdated AC system. We used the residual areas between bathrooms to encase the new stairway, complete with stone-integrated Ann Sacks sconces, creating a large foyer that organized the circulation on the first floor. The new foyer also serves to display part of the clients’ art collection.

The original space on the second floor had similar problems with flow. By relocating the stair and cancelling a Den/Bedroom, we reorganized a Guest Bedroom illuminated by Axolight, created a new Laundry Room, and achieved a dramatic, open, two-story dining room. In the Master Suite, lit by Bover, we opened the space and completely rearranged a labyrinthine Master Bath and Closet to obtain a simple, linear layout that provides a flexible design solution, seamlessly integrating the Ornare custom-designed closet to the rest of the space. Now the owners can wake up and take a bath enjoying a dramatic bayside view.
