First, I would suggest updating fabrics around the house. Switching worn, outdated colors and patterns with brighter, crisper options will give homeowners a fresh perspective for the New Year.

Painting is always a great way to make things new again. For an uplifting start to 2015, think about energizing a room with a “Color of the Year” from one of the major paint manufacturers.

Rearrange furniture. Move seating arrangements around to make a space feel more inviting. Even relocating pieces to different locations throughout the house brings renewed energy to a home—perfect for ringing in 2015.

What are a few home décor-related New Year’s resolutions you’d suggest readers strive to achieve in 2015?

• Reduce visual clutter. We all have mementos and collectibles we like to display to make our house a home; however, not containing them will have the opposite effect and make a space feel uncomfortable. Choose accessories wisely; adding a splash of color and interesting textures to change the tone of a room.

• Everything doesn’t have to match. The key to a casual, comfortable space is to have contrasting elements throughout. Regardless of your style, include pieces that don’t necessarily fit the genre of your design plan; for example: pair modern pieces with traditional to add depth to any room.

• Most importantly, homeowners shouldn’t hesitate to consult with an interior designer regardless of how large or small a project is. Most interior designers are flexible with how they work with clients, and are valuable assets in the pursuit of the perfect design.

I am currently dabbling in various projects. However, one of my favorites that is in the works, is a new international business development for buyers who are interested in purchasing property in the heart of the Tuscan hills. Who wouldn’t want to live in Italy?!

The top two social media outlets that I most frequently use to display a new property are Youtube and Facebook. I love that these social media tools have the ability to reach so many people on an international level. I am loving them!

3)       With springtime now approaching, are there certain properties you expect to get more attention than others? How can sellers make their properties more marketable in the spring?

We live in a perpetual summer here in sunny Southern California, so it’s only natural that our clients are looking for some beach front property. I currently have a gorgeous listing in the exclusive guard gated enclave of Malibu Beach in Malibu Colony that would make the perfect place to soak up all that California sun!

Sellers can make their properties more marketable in the spring by doing some good old fashioned spring cleaning! Also, don’t forget to plant some beautiful spring flowers. They always make a home feel so much more warm and inviting.

What are the chief benefits of hiring an interior designer, versus setting out to decorate one's home without any professional help?

The chief benefits of hiring an interior designer is the global picture, the vision the designer has of the space. I know it appears very easy to some people to decorate on their own, one will think “I love this and that,"  and “I have a good taste it will fit together” etcetera. But good taste and [proper fit] are not enough to set up the perfect décor. I recall a project when I suggested one of my clients marry contemporary and antique furniture; she had this beautiful painting with bold colors from a very famous contemporary artist that she wanted to use in the nursery. She also was attached to an old XVIIIth century hunting table. She needed to make some space and was devastated by the idea of selling it, as it had been in her family forever. So I suggested we could use it as a changing table. She looked at me as if I was totally crazy—how could I mix contemporary art with XVIII century furniture? I begged her to trust me.

We revamped the hunting table, giving it a second life by repainting the structure in bold orange to give it a contemporary look. We also added a contemporary custom-changing tray, a few storage baskets, et voila!! It became the perfect changing table for the décor. Once everything was assembled it was like it was meant to be together. That is what I call “interior designing.” 

Hypothetically, if one of your clients was immensely dissatisfied with a project's end result (even though your design met his or her needs and desires to a tee), what would be your approach to quelling his or her discontent?

As I said in a previous interview, we are a small family-run business. I am in constant contact with my clients. Most of them are much more than clients. A job is not complete until everybody is happy and I am personally involved at every stage. To put it simply, the nursery is like the baby; if we decide that we are going to do it together, I have yet to meet anybody who was unhappy once it was delivered.

We can drive from the north end to the south side and end up with a completely different feel/vibe. What are the benefits of hiring an interior designer?

A lot of clients are quite creative; however, hiring a professional interior designer has many advantages. A professionally accredited designer has the expertise and knowledge to create a total design strategy, no matter how large or small the project. Hiring a designer alleviates the chances of making mistakes with uninformed and impulse decisions. Credulous choices could affect the outcome of a current project and any future design plans.

Another benefit of hiring a professional designer [revolves around the fact that] we are always searching for new, innovative products to present to our clients. With access to literally thousands of suppliers and artisans which may not be available to the general public, a successful designer has the ability to quickly and efficiently research and acquire materials that are perfect for a particular project. Also, designers are required to attend continuing education classes, keeping us up-to-date on the latest products, technologies, styles, and trends. There are so many options available in today’s market, that designers can cull through the endless possibilities and prepare a comprehensive design plan to fit any individual or lifestyle.

Of course, in interior design, proportion and scale do matter. Hypothetically, if one of your clients was immensely dissatisfied with a project’s end result (even though your design met his or her needs and desires to a tee), what would be your approach to quelling his or her discontent?

My philosophy has always been to provide a level of design and service that reaches beyond the average. I want a client’s journey to be enjoyable and have them be thrilled to say, “Lori Carroll was my interior designer." However, if I did have a client that was immensely dissatisfied with a project’s end result, I would definitely approach the issue as expeditiously as possible. Communication would be the key to diffusing the situation. Expressing genuine concern for the client’s issues and reassuring them that I will do everything possible to ensure his or her satisfaction can transform a disgruntled person into a customer for life. Integrity is the “soul of my brand," and I have built a reputation around consistency, honesty, trust, and loyalty. As soon as clients realize I will be around, even after the sale, conflicts like this are kept to a minimum.

What are some of the most common recreational activities residents of your region like to partake in? Are there any specific spots they like to frequent to enjoy such to-do’s?

Los Angeles is a year-round playground because of our perfect weather, beaches, mountains, and Hollywood. Growing up, we would go skiing at Big Bear in the morning, get some sun and lunch in Palm Springs, and then hurry to Malibu for surfing and a BBQ at sunset. Where else in the world can you do that?

Griffith Park has always been a hot spot for recreation in the city. The quiet winding roads make it a popular place to go hiking, bike riding, and horseback riding. There’s also a golf course, baseball fields, and the Los Angeles Zoo. Best of all is the art deco observatory, famed for its movie location shoots and mountain and sea views.

On the Westside, Will Rogers State Park offers some of the best scenic hiking and equestrian trails in the area; you wouldn’t believe you are in the city. You can even catch a polo game on the weekends. I personally enjoy this park for its history. Everyone has seen the Will Rogers name on signs throughout the Westside, but may not realize he was the most popular and highest paid actor during his time. He began developing the ranch in the 1920s on 186 acres, complete with an incredible ranch house, stables, corrals, and riding arena. His widow donated the ranch to the state in 1944 and it is now a historic state park. I highly recommend taking a tour of the grounds.

The most important thing to do is to clear your mind. Often times the perfect home for you isn’t what you initially envisioned. It’s best to go in with an open mind and consider factors beyond the style of the home such as location, privacy, lot size, and views. These will have the largest impact on your resale value; you can always redecorate or remodel a home to your desired style. Always remember: what you start out looking for is not what you end up buying.

I also recommend spending time in the neighborhoods you are considering during different times of the day and week. Use your senses; observe what the busy streets are; listen for noisy restaurants or construction happening in the area.  You don’t want to find these things out after you purchased your home. The most important point is to remember you are a tenant in your own house. Buy it with resale always in mind. Sooner or later you will become a seller and you don't want the custom changes you make to hurt your sale chances or narrow the market of available buyers.

We are so very lucky to be situated on the southern east coast of Florida. Our beaches are clean and the water is a beautiful crystal clear blue. Residents and visitors love our beaches for swimming, beachcombing, snorkeling, surfing, paddle boarding, and sunbathing. Just off our coast lies multiple sunken treasures, hence the name for our region, “Florida’s Treasure Coast.” Divers find buried treasures still today. Our offshore fishing is some of the finest in the world with catches of sailfish, grouper, snapper, dolphin, and more. Beginning a search for a new home is both exciting and stressful.  At no other time in our lives do we have to consider so many issues. Price, area, schools, neighborhoods, lifestyle and more are all important items to consider. There are three things I urge buyers to think about first.

First, a buyer cannot even begin to look at property until they know what their price point is. This means knowing what you are willing to spend, what you are able to spend, and what you will need to spend to get what you want. Being intimately familiar with your financial information will make the home buying process quicker and easier. Once you know your price point, you can begin the search for your dream home.

We’ve all heard it before: location, location, location. Nowhere is that more important than in private residential real estate. Most people know what area of Florida they want or need to live in, but that’s just the beginning. Do you want to live on waterfront property? If so, do you prefer oceanfront or riverfront? Do you want a gated community, or do you prefer an open neighborhood? Do you like managing your own landscape and having the freedom to do what you want with your property, or do you want to live in a highly maintained community tightly controlled by an HOA? And if you have school age children, then schools are certainly an important consideration. Once you answer these types of questions, you can close in on your preferred location.

Last but not least is figuring out which amenities and type of lifestyle is important to your family. Does your family love being able to get up in the morning and jump in your own pool, walk to the beach or tennis courts? What are some of the most common recreational activities residents of your region like to partake in? Are there any specific spots they like to frequent to enjoy such to-do’s?

Costa Rica, as the world knows, is a playground of outdoor marvels. From volcanoes to waterfalls, the world’s best deep sea fishing, to white-water rafting… the choices are almost endless.

In the Costa Ballena region, along the Southern Pacific coast (Playa Dominical, Uvita), we have a laundry list of activities for tourist and locals alike to enjoy. This is home of the famous Whales Tail natural beach formation, which is the heart of Ballena National Marine Park. Both Alaskan and Antarctic Humpback Whales visit here twice annually. This is home to some of the best surfing and SUP along the Pacific coast. Journey further out to sea and enjoy deep sea fishing at its finest. Just thirty minutes to the north lies Manuel Antonio National Park, where you can see the jungle come alive with monkeys, sloths, iguanas and a long list of rain forest bird species. For those seeking tranquility, there are ample year-round waterfalls in the community to enjoy. Take a horse ride back to Nayauca Waterfalls—you will be blown away!

Name three things those looking to purchase a new home should do even before beginning their searches.

Buying real estate in Costa Rica has similarities to the process in the States; however, bank financing is normally not part of the process. So, understanding that this has historically been a cash market for foreign investors, please note that in advance. There are sellers that might offer seller financing, which can assist in the short term. Each transaction is negotiated separately.

Many people visiting Costa Rica see that it is a relatively small country on a map. Just wait until you arrive and experience how its geology creates for an adventurous journey. Plan your trip with a little more time than your think. Looking at homes here is nothing like looking at properties in the U.S. Off-road vehicles are commonplace, and the distance between home showings can be more than one may think.  Good time management for your trip is crucial, so that you enjoy the journey.

Consider your personal tax situation if you are planning invest internationally. Your long-time and local accountant / tax preparer may have zero knowledge of how to structure your foreign investments (many simply do not). It is a good idea to seek someone in advance so you can successfully prepare to take your money overseas, and in the event you need to bring it back, you will have a comprehensive understanding of the process and potential tax liabilities.

What are some of the most common recreational activities residents of your region like to partake in? Are there any specific spots they like to frequent to enjoy such to-do’s?

With more restaurants per capita than New York City, dining out is at the top of the list of recreational activities for Dallasites. Sports are also high on North Texans' list of fun, both participating in and watching.  We have world class golf courses like TPC at the Four Seasons Las Colinas, Preston Trails, and Gleneagles, and world-class sports teams like the Dallas Cowboys, the Dallas Stars, the Dallas Mavericks, and the Texas Rangers. The new Dallas Cowboys World Headquarters in Frisco will add another exciting sports center to our area. And let's not forget kids' sports; currently two of the top ten nationally ranked boys' football teams are from North Texas (Allen and Cedar Hill, as of September 3rd, 2014).

Klyde Warren Park, a Dallas park built over a freeway that runs through downtown Dallas, has become a great destination for all kinds of recreation. From food trucks to yoga to a dog park to a kids' splash pad there is something for everyone in this park adjacent to the arts district, which is the biggest arts district in the nation.

I would be remiss if I did not mention shopping as a recreational activity in North Texas as well. America's first shopping center, Highland Park Village, was built in Dallas in 1931. Since then other world-class shopping venues have opened up all over North Texas—North Park Mall, The Village at Fairview, West Village, Knox-Henderson, and The Shops at Legacy—to name a few.

Name three things those looking to purchase a new home should do even before beginning their search.

People often ask me what they need to do when contemplating a new home purchase. The first thing I tell them to do is identify their goals for their purchase. They need to establish goals for finances, family needs (neighborhood, schools, etcetera), proximity to areas of activity in their lives, and the needs for the actual layout of their homes. Once they have established those goals, they can get a letter of qualification or proof of funds so they make sure they are able to get into the home they fall in love with. Nobody likes to fall in love with a house and then find out they can't afford it. Protecting yourself up front and getting your financial ducks in a row is a way to save heartache and headache in the transaction process.

The third imperative is to find a licensed Realtor to work with. They can interview as many agents as they like to find the one that they feel can best help them turn their goals into strategies and convert their strategies into new homes.

What’s the best place to dine or drink under the stars in your region?

Il Cielo is a wonderful restaurant for dining under the stars. Reminiscent of Tuscany, large trees surround the outdoor seating area located under a romantic night’s sky lit by hanging chandeliers.  Il Cielo has been a staple in Beverly Hills since 1986, and continues to be one of the best places to view the sky, whether with friends, family, or that special someone.

What "smart" (or high-tech) features do homebuyers covet the most?

Many of the homebuyers I work with have an affinity for collecting wine. More recently, self-proclaimed wine aficionados are opting to forego the traditional wine cellar in favor of high-tech temperature-regulated wine cellars that are room temperature where you sit and drink or smoke cigars, and have the actual bottles in glass-enclosed storage units. Such units can be customized and constructed anywhere, making it easy for homeowners to display their collections without having to affect the temperature of an entire room. What makes these high-tech cellars even more incredible is that they can be illuminated on command, as well as the fact that owners can track the number and types of wines stored and provide pairing recommendations based on the available inventory—all functions that can be accessed through an iPad, iPhone, or any other smart device. I have seen one that by pushing a button on a particular wine rack, opens a screen on a monitor and gives the narrative on the wine selected, including pictures of the actual vineyard where the wine was grown and bottled.

Speaking of smart devices... A smart system is another popular high-tech feature, giving homeowners the power to control everything within their homes from their smart phones. Imagine turning on your spa while sitting in traffic on the 405, and after a long day’s work, slipping into perfectly-heated water while enjoying a glass of wine (from your own cellar of course). Now that's luxury living!

The luxury trends we are seeing are whole home automation systems for everything from lighting, sound, windows, appliances etc. Also, on the exterior of homes, things like fire bowls, water features, and swimming pools with automated LED lights and color systems [are becoming more popular].

What is the first question you ask your clients even before you begin the design process, and why is it the most important one to ask?

The first thing I have clients do before I start designing is have them take me around their spaces and describe to me their wants and needs. This allows me to gain a better understanding of their personal styles, how they use the space, their traffic patterns, and the scope of the project.

For instance, if a client takes me around a space and I see young kids or pets running around, I know the design needs to be practical and relaxed as opposed to formal. For clients whose kids are out of the house, I tend to put more focus on the aesthetics than purely function.

Are there any furniture or décor brands you tend to gravitate to the most when designing a space for a client? If so, which ones?

Hickory Chair is expensive but definitely represents my personal style. They make very well-made classic pieces that are customizable, and they have a wide range of styles.

The brands I gravitate toward all depends on my clients budget. If they have a bigger budget I look to Stark carpet, Schumacher fabric, and Hickory Chair furniture for products. Alternatively, if my client’s budget is smaller, I will look at Jaipur rugs, Kravet fabric, Visual Comfort lighting, and Woodbridge furniture.

Name and describe the room in your home that you most enjoy spending time in, and explain why it’s your favorite. Does the space possess any noteworthy features or embellishments? Does it have a certain theme or color scheme?

My favorite room in my home is the living room—it’s a tranquil place with a window wall overlooking beautiful foliage. The light-colored palette of finishes and furniture contributes to creating a relaxed, peaceful setting.

The upholstered furniture has classic, clean lines and is mixed with Asian-inspired accent pieces. Light-colored linens and cottons are my chosen upholstery fabrics. The artwork consists of some of my favorite genres and techniques—photography, water colors and Asian ink drawings. Accessories are carefully edited sentimental items found while traveling.

I love the natural light that fills the room, as well as the continual inspiration provided by the naturalistic view. It’s a great spot to relax and recharge in.

What is the first question you ask your clients even before you begin the design process, and why is it the most important one to ask?

What they envision their spaces to feel like, and what emotion they would like to feel when they walk into and are living in them. In this example “space” is defined as a room, a group of rooms, an outdoor area, or even the client’s entire home. The feeling or emotion the client desires is the most important aspect of the design process, this desire directs me to create a space suited for this specific purpose. With this core purpose in mind, I create a project that is aesthetically pleasing and proportioned, yet evokes the emotion the client desires.

In everyday life we don’t dress the same way if we are going to the spa or beach retreat as we do to a bar or nightclub. Spaces are an extension of clients’ emotions; tranquil or chaotic, cozy or stark; so you tell me: what do you want to feel like?

Are there any furniture or décor brands you tend to gravitate to the most when designing a space for a client (perhaps labels that well-represent your personal design aesthetic)? If so, which ones?

If one were to read the answer above, they would know the project is about the client, not about me (the designer). So, the answer is no, I am not caged into one specific brand or style. I believe in constant change and development; therefore, as my clients change, it is natural for me to change with them. I like to think of myself as a design chameleon wherein I create projects that are based on specific location, purpose of project, and obviously the client's desires.

Within my personal aesthetic I tend to gravitate to designer pieces, both modern and contemporary. I am a big fan of Cassina, Knoll, and Herman Miller not only for their classic masterpieces, but for their new reinterpretations of classics and new trends in furnishings.

For bespoke contemporary furnishings, Holly Hunt has magnificent pieces from her own collection as well as handcrafted one-of-a-kind pieces from several contemporary designers.

Other designers I love are Patricia Urquiola for Moroso and B&B Italia; Jaime Hayon for Fritz Hansen; and Philippe Starck for Sutherland & Dirade.

Bold graphic patterns are a big hit, especially when incorporated with bright colors. Metallics are in, adding a rich layer to interiors.

What strategies would you employ in decorating an exceptionally cramp space (such as a studio apartment, a tiny living room, a small office, etcetera)?

My strategy for decorating a small space is to "design.” What I mean by that is that decorating is one thing and design is another; function and flow are key to the best small space living. One can live "large" in a small space by having clever and adequate storage and multi-purpose furniture.

What’s the best place to dine or drink under the stars in your region?

The best place to enjoy food and drinks in Plano is the Shops at Legacy. On both the north and south sides of Legacy, just east of the Dallas North Tollway, the Shops at Legacy features many fantastic dining options, from the inexpensive patio at Mama Pita's to the patio at Jasper's, where you can enjoy the restaurant’s national award-winning ribs and designer cocktails. You can also enjoy cocktails under the stars at Sambuca, Mi Cocina, Nicola's, and many others. The Shops at Legacy will soon have a residential expansion on the other side of the Tollway with a luxury hotel that will include residences. And just south of there the development of two high-rise luxury condominiums is underway. This area is a great example of how mixed-use developments can be successfully done in the suburbs.

What patterns, colors, or materials are trending for this summer?

For this summer, the “under the sea” and the “flower power” trends are my favorites. They allow us to use all the beautiful, vivid, and saturated colors, from the turquoise and the navy, to the pink, coral, yellow and greens. The patterns don’t really matter, as long as we feel relaxed. My mojo for the summer trend is “comfort.” When everything is hot and sticky outside, you want to feel the breeze and stay cool inside.

Are there any furniture or décor brands you tend to gravitate to the most when designing a space for a client (perhaps labels that well-represent your personal design aesthetic)? If so, which ones?

Each project is different and I love to use antique unique pieces, so I can’t really refer to one brand. But when it comes to nursery design, the bed is the most important piece in the room. I tend to work a lot with European brands for their quality and aesthetic, as they are fresh, classic, and modern all at once. When you buy a crib for a nursery, you also buy all the sweet memories that come with it: the first night, the first smile, the first everything. And for that, you want a piece that will last a lifetime. I team up with Woodwork a lot. They deliver excellent quality and design.

What is the first question you ask your clients even before you begin the design process, and why is it the most important one to ask?

The first question is always “what do you have in mind?” When a client comes to me they usually trust my judgment and my taste. We are already on the same page. They hire me because they love my universe. But what is very important is to stay true to your client’s way of embracing life. There is a little bit of me in all my projects but much more of my clients. From what they love and what they dislike—and a little bit of my magic—we create a dream.

What strategies would you employ in decorating an exceptionally cramp space (such as a studio apartment, a tiny living room, a small office, etc.)?

The key to a small space is storage. I am obsessed with storages. Everything needs to be perfectly organized and structured. Small space does not necessarily mean small furniture; you just need items that are perfectly scaled for the space. It can mean that some pieces will be oversized to create the illusion of a larger space. My advice: just embrace the space. Don’t pretend—we all know where the walls are. Use the vertical of the wall, as it will give the impression of heights; make it a cocoon, a place where it feels good to leave and relax. Small trick I like to employ: Stick some mirrors all around the window frame. It increases the light and adds volume to the space.

If you're a member, there are private country clubs with beautiful patio dining options as well. In addition to our local options, we are only 22 miles from Manhattan, which has endless outdoor opportunities.

Kauai, and all of Hawaii, relies on tourism. There are so many wonderful dining options to choose from. Visitors and locals can go from exquisite five-star dining to simply going by their grocery store or food truck and picking up the local mixed plate or fresh island poke for a perfect meal.

But the best place to dine or drink in Hawaii under the stars is literally under the stars! Some of the most memorable moments are sitting around a beach bonfire with your friends and family. Pack a picnic, bring some take out, cook something over the fire, or have a local chef prepare your meal on site. Hire a musician and listen to the wonderful rhythm of local tunes as you gaze at the ocean and the millions of twinkling stars. The Milky Way lights up in Hawaii! Feel the warm trade wind breeze flow gently by. Enjoy, relax and unwind.

Most people that live on Kauai or move to Kauai want to simplify their lives. With constant trade winds flowing, most enjoy fresh island air and an active outdoor lifestyle. We have great weather and sunshine year-round, and with some of the highest electric rates in the nation, homeowners are moving towards solar systems to assist with their electricity or completely get off the grid. Tax incentives to install new systems are a bonus as well.

With the advent of the smart phone, owners can now install systems that allow them to manage their homes from afar—lights, thermostats, alarm systems, etcetera.  Cameras installed on property allow homeowners to view their homes remotely – whether it’s used as an alarm sytem or as a way to check up on the kids or pets—it’s all in the palm of your hand.

Given that we have some San Francisco foggy spots during the summer, I love to go to Point Cavallo in Sausalito in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge for dinner at Murray Circle, or sit by Farley’s, an outdoor bar nearby, or enjoy a wonderful sunset sail on the bay!

It really is the best dining that Malibu has to offer.

So you’re still stepping out of your bed onto a cold floor because you’ve been meaning to invest in a super soft rug but you’re not quite sure what to buy. You want it to be just the right size and pattern to pull the room together and a splash of color would be great too. So where do you begin?! Here are a few pointers to set you up for success.

Start with the rugsif at all possible, when designing a room. They define spaces, create warmth, absorb sound, and set the tone for your style; in some cases like foyers and kitchens, rugs serve to protect your floors beneath. What type of rug you should choose is based on its location, the amount of traffic/ wear it will take, your budget, and lastly, your own amount of consumer consciousness. Check out the table Chisana has created for you for some textile tips to help you make your selection. Note that if a rug is a blend of multiple textiles then the effect is typically to produce a more affordable rug that has combined properties of the fibers used.

     Scale large rugs that will encompass entire seating areas such as your dining room table and chairs or your entire living room by measuring from your strongest centerline, for example: your fireplace or a bank of windows, out to either the nearest point where foot traffic would begin or out to your wall, less 12”-30”. For seating areas you’ll want at least the front two legs of your chairs and sofas to be on the rug. Paths of travel behind seat groupings can stay uncovered. Standard rug sizes for newer, machine made rugs are 3’x 5’, 4’x 6’, 5’x 7’, 6’x 9’, 8’x 10’, 9’x 12’, 10’x 14’ and 12’x 15’. Runners for hallways or galleys are typically 2’-6”x 8’. Once you’ve measured your room, pick the length/size that would suit best. If you are in between sizes, go bigger; just make sure you don’t cover any air vents or floor details such as inset hearths. It’s okay for all of your furniture to be on the rug in one direction and just the front legs of the furniture in the other direction, for example if your room is square but your rug is rectangular. Square rugs do exist but they are better under a round table in a kitchen or to group club chairs around an ottoman- a grouping that is symmetrical with a strong central element.

     Where to shop for your new rug, you ask? For modern or solid rugs try InMod, or your favorite furniture shop such as Rowan Company or Four Rooms. For fantastic antique rugs, such as Turkish or Persians, try Togar Rugs in Asheville, or Hakim Rug Gallery here in Greenville. A wonderful way to get coverage without breaking the bank is to visit your local carpet store, such as McAbee’s Custom Carpet Inc., and have any carpeting cut down to your desired size. This is also a smart choice if you want or need a specific shape other than a rectangle, i.e. one corner needs clipping to fit the angled wall in your room. Carpet stores can also help you create stair runners to dampen sound and protect your stairs. Try adding an accent color as a fabric binder to boarder your rug for a fun detail at not much additional cost.

Some dos and don’ts: I’ve often had the question arise ‘Can you place a rug on a carpet?’ and my answer is this: If the carpet is a tight looped or hooked pile then a rug can successfully sit on top of it. A good rule of thumb is if your carpet has movement to it when you step on it, it’s probably too thick to put another rug on top. Rooms we typically see this would be in a nursery or secondary bedroom where extra color, patter, and softness is desired. Never put wall to wall carpet over hardwoods if at all possible. Instead, opt for your largest available area rugs to do the job. When purchasing your rug, don’t forget to ask for the appropriate rug pad to go beneath your new floor covering. Pads add plush comfort and can keep slipping at a minimum. Even your outdoor rugs need pads. Outdoor rugs are no different than Indoor rugs in regards to placement. Technology has brought outdoor floor coverings to feel softer and plusher than ever. If it’s been a while since you’ve looked at outdoor rugs, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with your options.

Once you own your new rug (and pad…wink wink!) or have shuffled your own rugs around for proper placement, check to see if the fibers look different in one viewing direction versus another. You will see this simply by walking to the shorter length of the rug and looking back up the length of the pile.   The rug will appear lighter from one direction than the other. Wools and silks are typically very directional so pick the coloring side you prefer and place it towards the location of the room from which you most enter. Since you will be walking on your floor coverings, remember, all rugs need different method of cleaning. Rugs are like art, they come in all sizes and qualities, so picking them is primarily a matter of finding the ones that you love and are right for your needs. If it takes you time to fill your home, that’s ok, when you do dress your floors you will appreciate the result a good rug can offer. What’s the best place to dine or drink under the stars in your region? 

Anguilla is known as an island for “foodies”  and has a large number of beachfront restaurants with fantastic cuisine.  Elvis’s Beach Bar on Sandy Ground beach  is a fun place to enjoy cocktails under the stars with your toes in the sand.  Mangos Restaurant on Barnes Bay is a magical setting with the ocean lapping just a few yards from the tables.  There are many others so there are a lot of options for seaside and under the star dining and it just depends on you what type of food you are in the mood for that day.  All the hotels on Anguilla also have open air restaurants serving all types of cuisine from Caribbean with Asian flair to Japanese.

What "smart" (or high-tech) features do homebuyers covet (want) the most?  

The Caribbean is not quite as high-tech as the United States or Europe but one thing for sure is no one can do without their wireless connection.   Home Security and Camera Systems where owners may view their property online while away is quickly becoming the other highly requested feature.
