Opened in 1939, Sugar Bowl is well known for its long history, significant advanced terrain, high annual snowfall and being one of the closest ski areas to the San Francisco Bay Area.
By the mid-1950s, Sugar Bowl was developing at a fast pace. Financed by affluent San Francisco Bay area families and notables such as Walt Disney, the Donner Summit resort opened in 1939 with California’s first aerial chair lift and a Bavarian-style lodge designed by William Wurster.
In 1957, 30 homes had been completed in the forests surrounding the lodge––more than enough for some stockholders who fancied the resort their private playground. Under pressure, Sugar Bowl directors refused to grant permission to 12 families who wanted to build chalets. A revolutionary alternative was proposed: joint ownership of 12 individually owned apartments on one large lot. Thus, condominiums were introduced into the ski industry. The attraction of Sugar Bowl’s Snow White co-op apartments paved the way for the village concept at ski resorts throughout North America.
Sugar Bowl Ski Resort now offers four peaks with over 103 trails accessed by 13 chair lifts. With over 1,650 skiable acres and the most annual snowfall in Tahoe at over 500 inches, Royal Gorge is North America’s largest cross country skiing resort. Boasting 200 kilometer trail system and over 7,500 acres of majestic terrain.
