Kitchens are the center of a home: a welcoming, warm place to gather, celebrate, and enjoy those we love. That’s why when it comes to choosing a kitchen countertop, many homeowners feel overwhelmed by extensive (and expensive) options. Whether you prefer sleek and modern, or shabby chic, one of these six fashionable countertops trends might be the right one for you.

1. Concrete Countertop

Designers and homeowners are buzzing about the customization and durability of concrete countertops, for good reason. As Alissa Pulcrano, with Oregon’s Bright DesignLab, explains, “unlike concrete counters of the past, the new concrete counters are lighter, and some have polymers mixed in, so they don’t stain or crack.”

In addition to their durability, concrete countertops offer a wide selection of seals and and finishes, from polished to rustic, which can be made to fit almost any palette.

2. Super White Quartzite Or Quartz

From counters to walls, all-white design motifs are giving homeowners from coast to coast a new edge in the kitchen. As Tim Farr, owner of StoneWorks, told Stone World Design: “It’s everything light and bright. People are moving away from the staple colors to white.”

With layering textures and patterns, whiteout quartz provides a sophisticated backdrop for you to incorporate a more dramatic or patterned backsplash.

3. Stainless Steel

There’s a reason that stainless steel is the go-to choice for restaurants––it’s almost indestructible. These tough countertops can withstand water, heat, and stains without compromising their elegant, modern look. Its reflective surface can also create the illusion of a larger kitchen.

As Oonagh Ryan, an L.A.-based architect explains, “It’s a really terrific countertop from a cost, durability, and maintenance perspective. And it only looks better with age and use.”

4. Blue Soapstone

While it might not have the notoriety of granite, soapstone is quickly becoming the go-to choice for homeowners looking for a more dramatic, yet durable, choice. As New York designer Drew McGukin explains, the moody palate is becoming increasingly popular and a dark blue soapstone is a great way to incorporate bolder colors into your kitchen.

For the eco-minded shopper, soapstone is also a popular choice, since its bacteria resistant and can be cleaned without any chemicals or harsh cleaners.

5. Glass Countertop

A creative blend of function and art, glass countertops are truly a unique design touch. Available in a variety of textures and colors, these countertops offer a translucent, beautiful surface. Want an even more dramatic effect? You can also use an LED or RGB light to create an even more unique aesthetic.

Although it can be pricier than other countertop options, glass countertops are non-porous so it’s one of the most hygienic countertop materials available.

6. Reclaimed Wood

Looking for a countertop that will help you create the warm, cozy home of your dreams? Reclaimed wood is a smart and affordable choice. Unlike pricier natural stones, reclaimed wood can be used from older trees, barns, or even wine barrels, so it offers a sturdier material than newer countertops made from virgin trees.

With its interesting one-of-a-kind details, reclaimed wood can just add the right amount of farmhouse chic to any kitchen style.
