Jasmin Reese, founder and Principal at Jasmin Reese Interiors, recently discussed her design philosophy with Haute Design.

Haute Design: You are based in Chicago but you do plenty of work for Naples and South Florida region. What would you say are the biggest differences in designing for either area?

Jasmin Reese: For the most part, homes in Naples appear to be second or third homes, so the client is able to do something a bit more fun or perhaps something a bit out of their comfort zone that they would not have been able to do in previous occasions. This freedom to take design chances can translate into bold looks or finishes, furnishings that are more luxurious and beautiful, without the constant worry of "resale," or finishes getting "worn out" too fast.

Chicago is known for a neutral and gray palette generally but that would not describe my projects or my clients, for the most part. I try to introduce styles that would resonate with the client. My instinct is blending antiques with modern elements, dark elements mixed with light, feminine tones contrasting with masculine, high and low, as well as fully-encompassed rooms of color.

HD: Would you briefly explain your "Style Sessions" with clients at the beginning of each project?

JR: The process begins with a 15-minute discovery call to learn about general requirements. This is followed by a paid initial consultation within the space to establish the client's wish list. The next meeting is a fully-collaborative style session between me and the client. Throughout the meeting, we work together to establish principal design requirements, a budget and a general time table for the project. This is the most important meeting throughout the entire process and I make a point for all decision-makers to be present. Throughout the meeting we also establish a presentation date, which my team and I commit to arrive prepared with samples, floor plans and an itemized budget.

HD: How would you describe your design identity?

JR: As an artist, I am very passionate about our design projects and I strive to push the ideas as far as the client is willing to go. That said, I am also a business owner and I have to manage the team, client expectations, vendors, project completions, etc. So, my identity has to balance between the left and right side of the brain at all times.

HD: To what do you attribute the success of Jasmin Reese Interiors?

JR: Right away, I think of my mother, who went from having a tiny shop in a terrible parking lot with a small business in Rhode Island, to running one of the best gift shops in the state, with loyal customers, great staff and a robust business. Personally, I think for our Chicago clients, having a brick and mortar shop and office is very important and it allows us to engage with clients and build trust within the community. I am also very lucky to have an amazing team of talented designers, who are creative, smart and kind. I thoroughly enjoy going to work, and although we work in a bit of a tight office space in the lower level of the shop, we all have a mutual respect for each other and there is no drama. The only drama we want is from the interiors of the homes on which we work!

HD: Where do you see your firm in the next five years?

JR: I see Jasmin Reese Interiors with a strong foothold in Naples and with a larger team in Chicago. We will have multiple project managers so that I can do what I do best, which is design.

Denver-based designer Andrea Schumacher is never one to shy away from neither textures nor colors. This becomes more than evident after a quick scroll through her Instagram page. Andrea knows how to walk a fine line where her projects are fresh, yet timeless and no two are ever alike. With that in mind, one could only imagine the serendipitous joy of Andrea's clients when they connected over Facebook. While the then-engaged, now-married couple loved the structure and exterior of this Cherry Village home, they felt the interior lacked some joy. The clients made it clear to Andrea that they wanted her to have fun with this redesign.

Andrea began with a coat of white paint to lighten up the previously brown and heavy interiors of the home and things took off from there.

The color palette throughout the home was heavily inspired by the Serendip wallpaper by Manuel Canovas, seen in the dining room. Andrea's clients were not afraid of color and it shows. The couple even chose to go with the very same wallpaper as their choice for colors in their dining room canopy chairs. The textures, designs and colors seen in the Cherry Village home are playful and light hearted.

The great room displays Andrea's innovative creativity and resourcefulness. Andrea and her team wrapped the fireplace in grasscloth, which helps hide the TV. This approach is also much more friendly on the budget than using stone. The matching colored sofas provide for a cohesive and uniform design narrative throughout the space. They were upholstered in Kravet's Ypsilon in Vizir.

Andrea keeps the levity and playfulness going in the sitting room, where plenty of natural light flows in to allow for a custom natural sheepskin rug step into center stage.

As a nod to the home owners' affection for dogs, Andrea added a flocked dog wall covering by Osborne and Little in an adjacent mudroom. The black and white from the mudroom connects to the center table and throw pillows within the sitting room .

The evidently entertaining project makes for a uniquely gorgeous home which does not take itself too seriously and has plenty of color and levity.

For our project with Armani Residences we were inspired by the location of the property and the natural surrounding to recreate a selection of decorative shades and textures that flow energetically in balance with our client's favorite Natural Elements and Life Style. We implemented the use of earth tones, wood and quartz materials to highlight the property incomparable views, and create beautiful accent walls that are timeless and sophisticated.

Design trends come and go, and with the pandemic hitting and everyone stuck inside, the trends have especially changed this year. Check out the list below of the top 5 trends Haute Design thinks are here to stay in 2021. It's out with the old and in with the new, as they say.

Temporary Wallpaper

Wallpaper once was a simple feature of a home that has now turned into a key creative staple in home design. From intricate patterns, colors to visuals that tell a story, wallpaper is an essential feature in 2021 that enhances any room. Wallpaper selection creates a sense of depth, style, and visual interest.

Fashionable Healthy Kitchen Appliances

In light of the pandemic, people have turned to a wellness living lifestyle reflected in their kitchen design. Wellness kitchen appliances make healthy living easy and effortless. Going into 2021, kitchens have transformed to include storage for whole foods, prep spaces, and innovated appliances to make healthy meals... can you say 'air fryer'?

Maximalism

A few years ago, the minimalism trend hit the design market. Originating in the '60's, the idea of having a stark white room with only the bare essentials was all the rage. Now, since Covid hit and everyone has been stuck inside, they realize they actually would like more colors. Maximalism is making the comeback with people putting mismatched furniture with wacky colors all over their house.

Plants

Greenery in the house is nothing new, but it has especially started trending since quarantine. As people were stuck inside, a little greenery helped bring the outdoors in to them, and make them feel less alone. Many new plant moms and dads were born in this era, and this trend will continue throughout the year.

The Color Green

Green has made its way back to the interior design world. Whether plants or kitchen cabinets, green brings a sense of relaxation and wellness to any home. Many designers have moved from whites and neutrals to pops of color. People strive for a healthy living lifestyle, and the green pop of color is perfect because it enraptures nature, wellness, and health.
