The late Sheikh Saleh Abdullah Kamel’s stunning contemporary estate has finally sold for $24.5 million after almost two years on the market. During his lifetime, Sheikh Kamel made his fortune working as a banker and financier, controlling a wide range of companies. First purchased back in 2010, the Beverly Park estate was a prominent asset for Kamel in the United States.

John Simonian, owner and CEO of luxury watch shop Westime, is the new owner of the Beverly Park estate adding to the two other multi-million-dollar properties he owns in the area, one being a French Chateau style estate and the other an empty lot. In addition to running his luxury watch shops, Simonian has established himself as a real estate investor having bought and sold multiple estates in Miami, making a sizeable profit.

Both Simonian's newly acquired modern estate and his other estate within Beverly Park were designed by architect Richard Landry. Despite this commonality, the style of the two estates couldn’t be more different.

Pinecrest, Florida has long been a desirable destination for people looking to call South Florida home. How did you get into real estate development?

Originally, my intentions were to go into private wealth management, but I realized within a short period of time that it was not a true passion of mine. I found myself leaving the Business School at Florida International University to join the Architecture School. One afternoon after a large final studio presentation, it hit me. Real Estate Development is that balance between my passions - Architecture and Finance. I graduated from the School of Business with focuses in Finance and Real Estate. That year in Architecture school carved out my true passion.

What is the legacy of Balli Group?

Balli Group is a legacy company. My Grandfather, Giorgio Balli Sr., arrived from Lima to California in the early seventies and never looked back. A few years later, he arrived in Miami and designed most of Cocoplum and Gables Estates in the early eighties. Soonthereafter, my Father, Giorgio Balli Jr., joined the company and exponentially grew it to have designed and built over 300 Luxury Custom Homes all of South Florida. Over the years, we've been able to expand our services to our clients to now become a fully-integrated development firm. Balli Group will continue to produce its high-quality level products for decades to come.

What trends have you been seeing and incorporating into your projects?

Given the current conditions, at-home gyms, spas and offices are at the top of the list. One item I’ve been focusing on incorporating into our upcoming projects is technology integration within our projects.

Where do you see the company going in five years?

I see the company continuing to lead the South Florida’s Residential Luxury Market while branching out into Commercial Markets.

What has been one of your favorite projects to date?

This is a very difficult question because each and every project is so unique and special in its own way. One of my favorite projects to date must be Hammock House, a beautifully appointed Tropical Modern compound located in the gated community Hammock Lakes. What made us purchase the property was the abundance of mature oak trees (70+). This created a challenge during the design phase, but Giorgio managed to design everything around and between the oaks - creating an incredibly surreal experience once inside the home. The success of this project lead to a recording breaking sale prior to the project’s completion. One of our next projects will be located in the gated community Snapper Creek Lakes and we anticipate a completion date of 1Q 2023.

In a time when being different and original is so valued, Millennials, which range from the mid-20s to late 30s, have favoritism with design trends that are considered by most old and outdated. Grandmillenials are trend-averse, and very attracted to entertaining, a major aspect of the decor style. The popularity of the trend was furthered thanks to shared images on social media displaying fancy dinner parties and exuberant tablescapes.

With the Grandmillenial decor style, there is the risk of making the space too cluttered, excessive, and too granny-like. The purpose of the decor style is to have an antique feel that is layered and classic at the same time. The thoughtful use of colors, patterns, and items is critical. The key to success with Grandmillenial style is to keep the color palette uniform, so the environment feels consistent and cozy instead of tumultuous. This granny-chic style shows off millennials' individuality while bringing them a sense of nostalgia.

Project Runway mentor Christian Siriano announced the launch of his interior design firm, Siriano Interiors. Catering to residential and commercial design, Siriano Interiors is Siriano’s next major step in conquering the interior design world.

On January 5, Siriano, 35, revealed his new firm via Twitter and Instagram that wrote “New Interior Design firm, Siriano Interiors for 2021.” The social media post accompanied a picture of Siriano in a modernly designed room with the caption, “Here is a sneak peek of our midtown townhouse we just completed!”

Siriano Interior’s website includes photos of commercial and residential projects. Pillows, settees, chairs, fabric samples, and stools are also available for purchase. Siriano's designs reflects his fashion expertise with a modern, simplistic influence. Sirano incorporates textures and a neutral color palette in his designs.

After winning Project Runway, Siriano’s fashion career took off. Siriano’s fashion designs have been worn by global superstars from Angelina Jolie to Scarlett Johansson. Siriano’s fashion portfolio includes intimates, eyewear, home and bedding, and a beauty collection. In 2012, Siriano opened his first store in New York City. Siriano is also a member of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

Tune into the Modernism America Awards Ceremony on November 11 to commemorate the documentation, preservation, and reuse of modern buildings, structures, and landscapes built in the United States. The Awards is tentatively virtual, but the date could change if able to be held in person.

“The Awards recognize those building owners, design teams, advocacy and preservation organizations that have made significant efforts to retain, restore, and advocate for the aesthetic and cultural value of such places,” stated the Modernism in America Awards website.

The deadline for early nominations is 5:00 p.m. eastern standard time on April 29. All nominations for the Awards must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. eastern standard time on June 2.

The ceremony consists of a jury that awards the design efforts. Marcel Quimby, FAIA, is the chairman of the Awards. Quimby is the principal of Quimby Preservation Studio, which is a preservation architecture and planning consulting firm. The jury includes Michael Chen, Gina Ford, Kelsey Keith, and John Reddick.

There are three award categories that the juries recognize: design, inventory, and advocacy. The Design Award is given to design efforts that “preserve, restore, or adapt a modern building, structure, or landscape of local, regional, or national significance, securing its presence for future generations.” The Design Award is divided into three subcategories: residential, commercial, and institutional.

The Inventory Award is given to design efforts that “document, inventory, and/or create a preservation plan for one or more modern buildings, structures, or landscapes of local, regional, or national significance.” Submitted nominations include a website, book, publication, or exhibition.

Presented by the Docomomo US Board of Directors, the Advocacy Award is given to design efforts that “preserve and advocate for threatened modern buildings, structures, or landscapes of local, regional, or national significance through advocacy efforts.” Advocacy and preservation organizations or groups are nominated for this award.

The Awards consists of a committee that manages nomination and eligibility guidelines, jury selection, submission guidance. This year’s committee is Theodore Prudon, Meredith Bzdak, Tonia Moy, and Gregory Ibañez.

Constructed in 2003 by Domespace, a French home kit company, the spacious three-bedroom, eco-friendly prefab dome home rotates 360-degrees via remote (and Passive Solar Energy) to maximize sunlight, adjust indoor temperatures or to change scenery. The house is surrounded by a 40-foot, curved cedar deck ideal for lounging and entertaining.

The New Paltz, NY home offers three bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms.

The UFO-looking home rotates 360-degrees via remote control, allowing the owner to take advantage of sunlight and easily adjust temperatures.

Inside is as unconventional as outside, with lofty ceilings, massive curved windows and an open, wall-free floor plan crafted of low-maintenance organic materials like cedar, bamboo and limestone. The eight-room, two level property includes a master bedroom suite on the first floor, a custom staircase to an upper level library, office, guest bedroom and full bath (the entire house has two-and-a-half bathrooms in all).

Enter developer Miki Naftali and Danish architect Thomas Juul-Hansen, whose 210 West 77th Street project will nourish the Upper West Side community with 18-stories of luxury apartments, slated for occupancy in early 2016. West-siders who are already salivating better prepare to pony up some dough, as apartment prices will reportedly range from $4.85 million to over $21 million.

Inspired by Danish modernism, the 210 West 77th Street building resembles an edifice you’d bicycle past in Copenhagen rather than New York City (and that’s a good thing). Juul-Hansen’s building design features hand-formed Danish brick, Juliet balcony façades, and oversized mahogany windows that are harmonious with the Upper West Side’s architectural character. Not since Danish immigrant Jonas Bronck (for which The Bronx is named) has a Dane given New York City so much in a time of need.

“I’m a big believer in the beauty of natural materials,” said Juul-Hansen, whose résumé includes interiors at luxurious developments, private homes and Michelin star restaurants such as Jean-Georges. “I believe this gives the architecture and design a timeless quality.”

The 210 W. 77th Street project offers fireplaces and outdoor terraces.

The 77th Street residences are half- and full-floor units ranging from 2,058-square-feet for three-bedrooms, to a 5,973-square-foot duplex penthouse with outdoor space. Select residences offer fireplaces and outdoor terraces. All units offer private access via an elevator that transports directly to the apartments.

The residences boast contemporary features—open layouts, solid oak-plank floors, large chef-quality kitchens with Miele appliances, polished Everest Grey quartzite slab countertops, and sleek white-lacquer cabinetry with polished chrome handles.
