Dorothy Alon is the founder of prominent Los Angeles-based design firm, Sophea Interior Designs. Dorothy has previously explained what sets her firm apart from other firms in the industry. Sophea Interior Designs is an all-encompassing firm with a holistic approach an exceptional attention to detail. Recently, Dorothy took time from her busy schedule to discuss modern design with Haute Design. What is modern design, anyway? Dorothy provided her fascinating perspective on this and more.

Haute Design: Does modern design equate to minimal design? If not, why do you feel so many people think out does?

Dorothy Alon: To each their own. As with everything in design, each person will have their own conception of what modern entails. Minimalism originated in the midcentury as a result of the Bauhaus movement, where less became more. Through the years, I think people started to want to care for less. So fast forward to the 2000s, and particularly toward the past 15 years or so, things changed drastically as far as construction is concerned. There are more metals involved, engineering has drastically advanced, and in turn, become more complex and we are now able to create far greater expanses and openings. This leads to larger windows and doors.

Construction has plenty to do with it because now, architects are able to plan way beyond their dreams in comparison to the past, where supplies and techniques were much more limited. So due to advances in construction, the exteriors of these houses are almost completely made of metal and iron. This allows architects to create openings of 20 to 30 feet.

Additionally, the contribution of television and social media cannot be overlooked. Clients used to come to you with maybe two or three reference images, whereas these days, they have 30 images at the ready because they see these pictures from all around the world and they want that openness and that space.

However, with that openness and the lack of walls, comes plenty of issues. Most of the issues come in the form of storage. Because now, your home does not have walls, it has no room for shelves or places to hang your art. Back in the day, your kitchen would be hidden and with it, any mess you created would go unnoticed by any guests you may have. Now, your kitchen is open for all to see in the living room. So, it's difficult to host if you have a family because everything is exposed. So, not everything that came as a result of this modern design was necessarily positive.

Clients who come from traditional homes to modern homes run into problems all the time. If you collect art for example, no we need to start discussing how to hang your pieces from hooks and all of these elaborate systems because your new home is all window. This is not to say that there aren't solutions to these problems, but most clients do not even consider this beforehand.

HD: Do you think the average conception of a modern homes has changed, especially after considering all of our relationships with our living spaces over the past year and a half?

DA: If anything, I think most people realized they don't need that much. People have learned to make their spaces accommodate to their lifestyles rather than the other way around. For the most part, when clients say modern, they are thinking of an open floor plan and clean lines. And yet, most clients ask for a 'warm modern.' Because a minimalist home, does not feel like 'home' to most people. So, they do not necessarily want a modern home. Because if the exterior is this shell of a minimal, Bauhaus home, but the inside has traditional furniture, with stucco, and curved and cozy furniture, it's not a cohesive idea. The inside has to communicate with the outside. It's all about feeling.

HD: Is there such a thing as a timeless home?

DA: When you say timeless, I believe you mean classic. It's something I tell my clients every time, when talking about exteriors, "Go for the classic." To me, classic is comprised of anything from the beginning of the 20th century, until the '80s or '90s. Classics will still look great 20, 30 years from now, but more importantly, they work. All of these design homes from the past century, they might be updated with new colors and textures, but their shape remains the same, because it works.

Founders and Principals at FORM Design Studio, Joshua Rose and Rafi Kalichstein, recently sat down and spoke to Haute Design about their design philosophies and why they prefer to work in tandem rather than as sole proprietors.

Haute Design: What is your favorite part about working as a duo?

Joshua Rose: I think we get to the iterative process faster than a lot of other sole proprietors or single principal firms. Along with our team, if we do not all agree that a particular decision is the best option, we don't move forward. At the end of the day, once all of us are aligned on the same perspective, the results are that much stronger and our collective buy-in allows us, in many ways, to work more efficiently.

Rafi Kalichstein: It's important to note, as Josh mentioned, that we aren't a firm of two. We are two principal designers in a small team. That said, one of the things I think is most valuable in design is peer review. There's no architectural firm worth its salt that is going to issue a set of drawings without peer review, regardless of how high or low in the chain the person who drafted these drawings finds themselves.

I think we have a tremendous advantage because the peer review process is so engrained in our DNA. The intrinsic trust and understanding among our team allows us to deliver work at a level of quality that I think is hard to find.

Lastly, I would say there is a practical benefit inherent in the way we deal with projects and personalities. We have extra tools in our tool kit to manage clients' expectations, personalities, or whatever the case may be. If I am not reaching a client in a certain way, there is a chance that someone else in the team can. We rely heavily on each other.

HD: Josh, what do you feel is the most valuable skill set you bring to the table? What is Rafi's? 

JR: The most valuable skill I bring, Rafi will probably say is the thing that drives him most crazy about me is that I'm really a do-er and I like to get things done and move on. I think I can cue things up really well and can get us to move the ball down the field efficiently. The creative is a given, you can't be a principal designer without having some sort of talent. But what I'm referring to is a more managerial high-level thinking.

Rafi's greatest skill set is that he is unbelievably detail-oriented. We're all detail-oriented to an extent but he's detail-oriented on so many different levels, not only on design and execution but also when collaborating with subcontractors, working with trades, and being cognizant of what the clients are going to be left with. He thinks on this really multi-dimensional level to make sure that every 'i' is dotted and every 't' is crossed, so that we can feel extremely confident in the work we deliver, which tempers my inclination to just keep moving. It is a constant dance between us.

At the end of the day, when you're dealing with millions of dollars, you have to be responsible and you need to feel comfortable with not just aesthetics but how people will live with your designs.

HD: Same question to you, Rafi. 

RK: Josh has an incredible observational capacity. Not to mention his memory, on which I rely heavily. While I know I'll see all kinds of things, to know that there is someone who can see your blind spots, is unbelievable. There is a real freedom and joy in that.

I think tenacity is my best quality, which can also be a hindrance, as Josh points out. But my unwillingness to let go until we have gotten the best solution is really an asset. There's a yin and a yang to everything we do together.

HD: Each of you has separately unique design backgrounds. Rafi, what is the most valuable trait you have kept from your Feng-shui background?

RK: First, I'll broaden it to say that it's diagnostic skills and tools, as well as the ability to see the unseen. There are things that I just know in my bones, which comes from years of diagnosis.

HD: Josh, same question to you, regarding your time in visual FX. 

JR: I think the strongest trait I have kept from that time is dealing with big personalities. I've been in very intense situations with some of the biggest film producers in the world. Navigating that in my 20's taught me so much, so I can certainly deal with clients and builders and intense deadlines.

HD: Where do either of you see FORM Design Studio in the next five to 10 years?

JR: I see us continuing to do what we're doing, which is delivering commissioned, beautiful, large-scale luxury projects. I think our product development channel will continue to grow as we add partners and collaborators. By then I think we'll definitely have fabric and wall coverings, and we'll have established a luxury high-end furniture presence as well.

RK: We would like it to grow our team a little bit, but there's a line past which we are not interested in traversing because of what we love about what we do. If you get too big, you become manager and project-getter, but you can't really get your hands dirty because there's no time. I don't think either of us is interested in just being managers. We will both always want to be deep in the worlds we design.

In 1975, Hyland was licensed as a broker. He was a founding partner at the brokerage firm Alvarez, Hyland & Young from 1980 to 1990. Finally, in 1993, Jeff Hyland and Rick Hilton co-founded Hilton & Hyland. It became the highest-producing luxury boutique brokerage in the world. Hyland had a wonderful reputation as a broker with a passion for architecture and estate genealogy.

Jeff has been a part of the Haute Residence network from the very beginning and was an icon of the real estate community. His legacy will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.

Sean Combs, notably recognized by his multiple stage names Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Puffy, or Diddy, is an American rapper, record executive, record producer, and entrepreneur. The hip hop musician was romantically involved with model and actress Kim Porter for 13 years and the celebrity couple had four children together. In December of 2020, Emmy winning comedian and television host Trevor Noah purchased an expansive estate in Los Angeles’s Bel Air neighborhood for $27.5 million. The South African entertainer acquired the impressive abode from architect Mark Rios who initially designed the property for himself in 2014. The home had previously been listed on the market in 2018 asking as much as $36 million. In 2020, the asking price was reduced to $32.5 million then lowered once more to $29.5 million.

Now, “The Daily Show” host is bidding farewell to his newly purchased residence for $29.75 million only 10 months after purchased. Although it is currently unknown as to why Noah is so quickly selling the home, he has been linked to several other properties across the country. In 2019, he purchased a nearby mansion at $20.5 million before flipping it for $21.7 million last year. Noah has also owned a $10 million penthouse in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen since 2017 and is currently renting a second residence in Tribeca for a reported $52,000 a month.

Noah’s former Bel Air abode spans a whopping 11,375 square feet with six bedrooms, eight full baths, and three half-baths. Beyoncé, singer songwriter and pop culture icon, has recently made news with her newest campaign in collaboration with Tiffany & Co. In the photoshoot, she became the fourth woman in the world to wear a 128.54-carat yellow gem. Since its release, the advertisement has become controversial due to the diamond’s colonial origins as well as the use of a never-before-seen Jean-Michel Basquiat “Equals Pi” print rendered in Tiffany Blue. Nonetheless, the project began with benevolent intentions as Tiffany promises to donate $2 million to scholarship and internship programs for historically black academic institutions.

While Beyoncé and Tiffany set out to highlight an extravagant $30 million diamond necklace, the mansion where the campaign was shot showcased its own luxurious nature. Located in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles, the expansive mansion was designed by the award-winning architect, Zoltan Pali. The lavish home was completed in December of 2018 and listed at $56 million. In May of this year, the price was reduced to $42 million. Pali states, “Given its prominent positioning above a relatively developed neighborhood, the motivation behind the design of the home was to create a residence that could meld into its surroundings while maximizing views.”

The bedazzling Bel Air spread spans 18,850 square feet with the nine bedrooms and ten full baths. The three-story building is comprised of glass walls to give the illusion of an airy and floating atmosphere. "While interior design is a broad spectrum and entails a multitude of specialties, I decided early on to focus on spec homes and new construction projects. This kind of business requires the interior designer to be involved early on in the process. Typically, we are getting the floor plans after the architect's first draft and we are looking at the house placement on the site map. Then we check that all the main spaces are sufficient and proportional to the scale of the house, both in space and return on investment. We proceed by verifying every window and door size and location. Lastly, we are making sure all standard furniture works in the space and we have enough wall space for cabinets, storage and art. Once this is complete, we continue with designing and selecting finishes. If we have any comments throughout this part of the process, we send it back to the architect to hear their thoughts. We respect the work they have done so far and would like to make sure we are giving our client the best product possible in terms of architecture and interior. In essence, the architect is the conductor and we are the orchestra. We work with all architectural softwares to make it easy for them to quickly respond and keep the work streamlined."

In April of 2018, Leonardo DiCaprio of “Titanic,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” added a newly purchased property to his already impressive real estate portfolio. The Hollywood A-lister acquired a lavish Los Feliz residence on Red Oak Drive from musician Moby through a trust. The sale was closed at $4.91 million, and the estate titled Red Oak Manor reportedly served as home to a member of DiCaprio’s family. Now, the Oscar-winning actor is bidding farewell to the marvelous manor listing it at $5.75 million.

As his primary residence, it is reported that DiCaprio calls Malibu his home. First purchasing a house there in 1998, he paid $23 million for a more expansive 1.8-acre spread in 2016. Other notable properties he’s acquired consist of Madonna’s former home he purchased in the 1990s, a mid-century modern space in Palm Springs, a chic New York City apartment, a compound property on the Sunset Strip, and an island in Belize. In 2017, the famed Hollywood star purchased a contemporary mansion in Clearwater, Florida for $3 million under Hawker Investment Trust, Travolta and his late wife Kelly Preston’s go-to trust in which his sisters are listed as trustees. Located a mere mile from the Scientology headquarters, Travolta has served as a devout member of the controversial Church of Scientology since 1975. Clearwater also provides residence to fellow Scientologists Tom Cruise, who lives in a downtown penthouse, and Kirstie Alley, who owns a multi-residence waterfront compound.

Now, Travolta is bidding farewell to his former Florida home for $4 million. The property was initially listed in March for $4.65 million but nonetheless, the 67-year-old actor is walking away with a profit. This sale comes about a year following the passing of his late wife Kelly Preston in their home due to breast cancer. In January 2020, Travolta sold his $18 million Spanish-style mansion in Los Angeles and earlier this year, parted ways with his longtime waterfront residence in Maine for $5 million. He currently owns a $2.65 million Calabasas home which he purchased with Preston in 2019.
