Dorothy Alon is the founder of prominent Los Angeles-based design firm, Sophea Interior Designs. Dorothy has previously explained what sets her firm apart from other firms in the industry. Sophea Interior Designs is an all-encompassing firm with a holistic approach an exceptional attention to detail. Recently, Dorothy took time from her busy schedule to discuss modern design with Haute Design. What is modern design, anyway? Dorothy provided her fascinating perspective on this and more.

Haute Design: Does modern design equate to minimal design? If not, why do you feel so many people think out does?

Dorothy Alon: To each their own. As with everything in design, each person will have their own conception of what modern entails. Minimalism originated in the midcentury as a result of the Bauhaus movement, where less became more. Through the years, I think people started to want to care for less. So fast forward to the 2000s, and particularly toward the past 15 years or so, things changed drastically as far as construction is concerned. There are more metals involved, engineering has drastically advanced, and in turn, become more complex and we are now able to create far greater expanses and openings. This leads to larger windows and doors.

Construction has plenty to do with it because now, architects are able to plan way beyond their dreams in comparison to the past, where supplies and techniques were much more limited. So due to advances in construction, the exteriors of these houses are almost completely made of metal and iron. This allows architects to create openings of 20 to 30 feet.

Additionally, the contribution of television and social media cannot be overlooked. Clients used to come to you with maybe two or three reference images, whereas these days, they have 30 images at the ready because they see these pictures from all around the world and they want that openness and that space.

However, with that openness and the lack of walls, comes plenty of issues. Most of the issues come in the form of storage. Because now, your home does not have walls, it has no room for shelves or places to hang your art. Back in the day, your kitchen would be hidden and with it, any mess you created would go unnoticed by any guests you may have. Now, your kitchen is open for all to see in the living room. So, it's difficult to host if you have a family because everything is exposed. So, not everything that came as a result of this modern design was necessarily positive.

Clients who come from traditional homes to modern homes run into problems all the time. If you collect art for example, no we need to start discussing how to hang your pieces from hooks and all of these elaborate systems because your new home is all window. This is not to say that there aren't solutions to these problems, but most clients do not even consider this beforehand.

HD: Do you think the average conception of a modern homes has changed, especially after considering all of our relationships with our living spaces over the past year and a half?

DA: If anything, I think most people realized they don't need that much. People have learned to make their spaces accommodate to their lifestyles rather than the other way around. For the most part, when clients say modern, they are thinking of an open floor plan and clean lines. And yet, most clients ask for a 'warm modern.' Because a minimalist home, does not feel like 'home' to most people. So, they do not necessarily want a modern home. Because if the exterior is this shell of a minimal, Bauhaus home, but the inside has traditional furniture, with stucco, and curved and cozy furniture, it's not a cohesive idea. The inside has to communicate with the outside. It's all about feeling.

HD: Is there such a thing as a timeless home?

DA: When you say timeless, I believe you mean classic. It's something I tell my clients every time, when talking about exteriors, "Go for the classic." To me, classic is comprised of anything from the beginning of the 20th century, until the '80s or '90s. Classics will still look great 20, 30 years from now, but more importantly, they work. All of these design homes from the past century, they might be updated with new colors and textures, but their shape remains the same, because it works.

Haute Design recently discussed how Lakesha balances work life and private life on social media.

Haute Design: How big a role does social media play in your day-to-day business strategy?

Lakesha Rose: Honestly, it should play a larger role than it currently does. Often, I am in the moment of work and I forget to post progress or when I think I should post something, I just shrug my shoulders and say I will just feature the work when it is finished that is why often I am radio silent, but the truth is I am just working. My plan is to hire someone to keep me more present on social media. Secondly, I also really enjoy flying under the radar just living my wonderful life quietly.

HD: What is your thinking behind sharing both professional and personal posts on Instagram?

LR: I do it very carefully. I do not post vacations unless I visit a manufacturer or design store. In which case, I post that moment because it is related to work. My husband is the number one Sportscaster in Chicago and has been for over 40 years, so his life is public being on TV every day, so we enjoy fading away to vacation quietly together. I do post some photos of us from time to time and it is because I emotionally feel ok to post about it that day. Jim and I both have public jobs, so we enjoy going to our home in Michigan and not leaving the house all weekend and I cook, listen to French music, we create date nights inside of our home. Most of the time, the season determines what our cocktail of choice is and since it's winter we are drinking Whiskey Sours, using Japanese whiskey. I would best describe us as introvert/extrovert.  

HD: Have you noticed any specific patterns among clients or prospective clients regarding which posts are preferred between professional and personal?

LR: I would say they like both because it gives them a peek inside of my personality before meeting me but if I venture to guess they like what they see because they are hiring someone that understands exclusivity and will not talk about a well-known client. My page does not reveal a narcissist.

HD: Are there any other social media platforms you like to use? Is Instagram your favorite?

LR: The other one I use is Facebook, but for creativity I use Instagram.

Cozy recently shared her thoughts behind separating work life and personal life in a conversation with Haute Design.

Haute Design: As you know, the design and architecture industry's "hours of operation" are anything but standard. How do you find the balance between career and personal life?

Cozy Salazar: I still struggle with this on a daily basis. I really love what I do and sometimes I have a hard time separating my 'work life' with my personal life.  I tend to bring work home with me regularly, but as long as I leave the more stressful aspects of this job at the office, everyone is happy (or at least they pretend to be).

HD: Your children are often featured in your Instagram stories at work. Do they enjoy going to work with mom? Are they old enough to understand your line of work?

CS: I had my first daughter when my career started to pick up and that was tough. At the time, I did not have a full-time nanny, so Gianna went with me everywhere. I think it's because of this that she is so interested in everything I do. I bring her into the office for a couple of hours every week because she loves to be here. There are times where I'll be at a presentation and we find pieces of wallpaper and fabric samples that have little drawings on the back, which always makes me smile. Chiara, my youngest is only two, but I can already tell she has a good eye based off the shoes she picks out of my closet!

HD: Did you have a similar experience growing up? Would you ever go to work with your parents?

CS: Yes, my mom was always a working mom. I did not get to spend every minute with her, but the time we spent together was always special. She would take me into her office when I got out of school and I would always find ways to entertain myself there. She would always take me out for dinner afterward or sing in the car with me on the way home, and would always read me a book before bed.

HD: Have your girls expressed any desire to follow in your design footsteps? Do they ever share design input?

CS: They're still very little but I would love for one of them, if not both, to catch the design bug! It would be so special for me to teach them what I know, and to leave this to them one day. My oldest is very opinionated when she comes into the office, and although she may not know what she is doing, she definitely knows what she does and does not like, which is a crucial asset for decision-making in this business.

Hafsa Burt recently took the time to discuss matters of well-being and health with Haute Design.

Haute Design: Being successful in any line of business takes plenty of sacrifice and even more time. In the field of design and architecture, "work hours" are not necessarily uniform or standard. How do you find ways to make time for yourself?

Hafsa Burt: It isn't easy. I certainly can't work out every day, but I try to schedule it on my calendar. I realized early on that if you're not taking care of yourself, the demands of your business and life will take a toll on your health and well-being and you may become a nuisance to be around. I worked for larger firms before starting my own business and noticed many unhealthy lifestyle patterns in my senior colleagues, which resulted in a tense work environment. I try to use holistic therapies such as sauna, cryotherapy and acupuncture as needed. I also take care of what I eat to stay in optimum health in order to meet daily demands. A three-minute cryo session or a 30-minute sauna are easy to squeeze into my schedule.

HD: The topic of self-care has become ubiquitous in the past two years, in large part due to the pandemic and its consequences. What was the biggest lesson in self-care you came away with after lockdown?

HB: One of the biggest lessons from the pandemic is that life is fragile and given the consequences of globalization and climate change, our lives can transform drastically overnight, and with that, certain industries and businesses can become obsolete, leaving a lot of families economically vulnerable. Therefore, measures for resilience and flexibility in both the personal and business world need to be at the forefront of everybody's mind. The age-old notion of filling your cup so that you can be there for others has never been more relevant. Also, in the age of information, carefully editing what enters your mind can do wonders for your well-being.

HD: In fields like design and architecture, which require so much creativity and perspective from the designer/architect, is the work partially an extension of yourself? If so, how much do you value your rest or solitude? Do you have any practices you recommend in order to rest and recover at the end of the day?

HB: I would love to be that parson who can fall asleep on a tour bus or in an opera performance! At the end of the day, I read fiction or historical biographies. It's a great way to give my mind a break from business activities and to enter someone else's imagination. I am just as careful about what I let into my mind as I am with what I eat. I also paint and sculpt to give the left side of my brain a break, which I wish I could do more often. In the middle of the day, a 30-minute spinning session can also be a good break to allow oxygen into the bloodstream and come back more focused and refreshed. I tend to use these techniques more than caffeine.

HD: Does health and wellness go hand in hand with design consciousness and ecological practices? If so, how?

HB: Yes, of course! Everything starts with the individual. I strongly believe that our spaces can contribute to our physical and mental health. Besides products specified in a project, access to daylight and positive air flow can all contribute to our well-being. Deliberate design choices that include green belts/corridors in our developments to allow access to nature, filter the air, are conducive to walking and biking, all create healthier micro-climates. Since the outdoor/indoor environment can be very polluted, we need to be careful about what we put into our bodies to cope with external stressors in order to remain in optimum health and focus on all the great socio-environmental work.

As Fall is here, what are your favorite seasonal activities to enjoy in your area?

Elise Larrabure Girasole, Westport, CT

During Autumn, being my favorite season, I enjoy bike riding along the beautiful Westport beaches and hiking at Devil's Den in Weston where I can enjoy the spectacular Fall foliage and bird watching while being surrounded by the sounds of nature.

New York City in Fall lifts you up when you're down.
It might be rainy, but New Yorkers don't let the drizzle keep them away from seeing every spectacular color on the fall-foliage spectrum. You don't even have to scramble to get Upstate to peep the fiery show that is the end of New York's glorious fall foliage season—New York City foliage usually lasts through the beginning of November—something you can't say for most of the state's northern regions.
Fall time in the northeastern United States is welcoming, cozy, and full of beauty. New York City is no exception, with brilliant weather, beautiful scenery, and a plethora of things to do. And as one of the city’s premiere gems, Central Park is the ideal place to catch some of the fall time fun.
The Central Park Zoo is open year-round, but fall time is one of the best times of the year to go. Not only is the foliage spectacular, but it’s the perfect weather for walking around and seeing more active animals. Whether you’re there with your family or planning an event for your company, the zoo can offer beauty, fun, and some education.
Central Park becomes a fall-time wonderland around Halloween and if you’re looking for the perfect spooky-cool event, try taking advantage of the Halloween Pumpkin Flotilla. A few days before Halloween, you can take part in festivities like pumpkin carving, costume parades and contests, and the Flotilla. People from all over the world come to see the Pumpkin Flotilla, where pumpkin after pumpkin floats across the water and lights up the sky. An ‘Instagram-worthy’ event to attend!

Fall in the mountains of Park City is spectacular. Nothing beats hiking our trails and seeing the changing colors of the leaves.

As the leaves change and the crisp Fall air arrives on the Highlands-Cashiers Plateau the great outdoors offers a wide range of activities. Perfect for hiking, golf, croquet, fishing, or stroll around town for some retail therapy. Enjoying the warmth and sounds of a fire with a blanket for morning coffee or evening cocktails is perfect for creating mountain memories with family and friends.

Fall is such a lovely time of year in the San Francisco Bay Area. Whether for the day, a night, or the weekend, the Napa Valley is a beautiful place to be. The weather is refreshing and the scenery is stunning, from the fall leaves to fewer tourists, as if the Valley were all your own. Hiking beneath the redwoods in Tilden Park or one of the many parks around the Bay is also a family favorite. Apple picking in Watsonville then Carmel for lunch, and last but not least a visit to the pumpkin patch in Half Moon Bay followed by a spa treatment, lunch, or dinner at the Ritz Carlton. The Bay Area is such a beautiful place to live and explore.

The Fall is the BEST season in the Lowcountry! Weekends are filled with festivals and oyster roasts with friends. The weather is still perfect for lazy afternoons at the beach on Hilton Head Island! We also have two great charity polo events coming up in the area this year, so everyone is looking forward to that!

Atlanta is conveniently a quick drive away from so many fall destinations. I love retreating from the city for a quick mountain getaway in the Highlands/ Cashiers, North Carolina area, located atop the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year in Santa Fe. As the sun sinks a bit lower in the sky, we still have warm days and crisp, cool nights. The smell of roasted chiles is in the air, especially at our fabulous Farmers Market. It's the height of the harvest season with fresh corn, squash, peppers, cabbage, apples, and more – and pumpkins on the way. One annual autumn ritual here is going up to the mountains to see the aspens change. The combination of golden leaves shimmering in the sunlight against a deep blue New Mexico sky, along with the soft rustling sound as the wind blows through them, is pure Santa Fe enchantment at its best.

I like to participate in triathlons when time permits. I am currently training for one happening in late October and the cooler air paired with riding and running on along the coast is unbeatable. I start in Santa Monica and head out to Malibu and back and finish with a run along Ocean Blvd. Pair that with a post work out breakfast and it's a good start to a weekend morning!

Cindy Shearin: The Shearin Group, Manhattan Beach/Redondo Beach, California

The fall season is filled with many exciting events that locals look forward to year after year. The Hometown Fair, held this weekend on October 2nd & 3rd, is fun for the whole family; live music, pony rides, bounce houses, carnival games, food, shopping, and a beer and wine garden for adults. There is also a 5K race for all ages.

Next up is the world-famous Pumpkin Race, sponsored by the local business, Skechers. This race is for kids of all ages, where they engineer a pumpkin racecar to compete in an exciting downhill race at the food of Manhattan Beach Boulevard for prizes.

Following the fall festivities is the Holiday Tree Lighting in November, located downtown. As shoppers sip-n-shop, while the kids meet Santa and pet his reindeer, music, and magic are in the air. The ultimate event that every resident looks forward to is the Holiday Fireworks Show. Excited crowds fill the streets, and nearby homeowners host festive parties to ring in the holidays during the spectacular show.

Why Fall Is The Perfect Time Of Year To Experience The French Riviera

Every year thousands of tourists flock to the French Riviera. Travelers from all over the world come here to enjoy the sunshine, beaches, and sea. The arrival of fall means that the busy months of events, festivals, and holidaymakers come to an end. The weather begins to cool down, and the tourists return home. This article is dedicated to explaining why Fall is the best time of year to experience the French Riviera.

Temperate and Climate

The French Riviera is famous for having glorious sunshine 300 days of the year. During the summer it can be extremely hot, between 82 °F to 93 °F. Making the beautiful beaches a popular destination! The weather starts to cool down during the Fall months, becoming much more comfortable. Often the summer months feel too hot to explore, and the beaches can become crowded. In the Fall the weather temperatures fall to between 71 °F and 80 °F. The cooler weather makes exploring the historic towns and villages more enjoyable. However, the sun is still shining almost every day!

Beaches

On warmer days, many locals still visit the beaches and some even brave swimming in the sea! From 'La Plage de la Garoupe' (a beautiful beach in Cap d'Antibes) you can swim in the sea whilst enjoying the beautiful view of the snow-capped French Alps. If you don't fancy a swim, you can relax and enjoy a picnic on the beach. Many people enjoy sailing and windsurfing during the Fall and Winter months. Making the port towns a year-round hotspot!

Hiking

The French Riviera has some of the most beautiful hiking spots in France! From the Esterel Mountains, you can look down over the bay of Cannes and the bay of Saint Tropez. If you would prefer to explore the Provencal countryside, you can travel to The Var. An inland region within the Côte d'Azur - famous for its vineyards!

Food & Drink

The south of France has tons of beautiful restaurants! You can dine in a chic beach bar, or a cozy cafe - hidden up a side street. The French are famous for their delicious food! Antibes is a year-round city, meaning its cafés, and restaurants are open all year. You can explore the winding streets and find delicious places to eat on every corner. Antibes hosts a market every morning where you can browse the stalls and buy local produce. Whether you are enjoying a glass of rosé in a wine bar, or share a pizza at an Italian café. Antibes is the perfect place to experience local life on the French Riviera.

Sunsets

The French Riviera is famous for its sensational sunsets! Every evening the sky turns to candyfloss colors throughout the region. However, during fall and winter, the sunsets become much more dramatic! As the days get shorter, the light across the region changes. Everything from the color of the sky, to the color of the trees and vegetation, becomes vibrant. As the sun slowly sets behind the sea and Esterel Mountains the skyline appears to be ablaze. It is a truly breathtaking experience.

Even though the weather may still feel like summer through October in Hawaii we have many fall traditions here on Oahu and on the other islands. My favorite is the Aloha Week Festival (dates for 2021 to be determined). The festival is ongoing for an entire week and starts off with the glorious Parade of Flowers, pa`u riders wearing long flowing gowns astride horses decked out in the finest ribbon and flowers. The Festival has been in existence since 1946 and celebrates all things Hawaiian. It is also celebrated on all islands so wherever you are there will be celebrations. My other favorite is the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival. This is over a month-long series of events with 67 top chefs from Hawaii and the mainland coming together in this top epicurean festival. The festival travels from island to island starting on the Big Island in October, then to Maui, and ending on Oahu in November. This year's theme is "Taste our love for the land". For the young and young at heart, you may love the Waimanalo Country Farm Pumpkin Patch with Sunflower Field. This farm has a drive-through tour this year with opportunities to pick your own pumpkin and enjoy the farm animal visit and sunflower fields. Their Pumpkin Patch farm stand will also be open. Whether fall is an apple cider on the beach or enjoying one of these wonderful events I hope you enjoy our islands this fall safely and with Aloha.

Amy Land-de Wilde, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands

Our weather stays pretty perfect all year long – sunshine with 70-85 degree weather throughout every season. Our outdoor lifestyle from dining alfresco at one of our open-air restaurants to hiking up to the top of a hill enjoying panoramic views and cooling breezes or swimming laps in the sea is enjoyed through the fall months (and into winter!) while our stateside friends are pulling out their scarves and ordering pumpkin-spiced lattes. Even though our weather, which impacts our daily lifestyle, doesn’t change much season-to-season we have other things that signify a change of season as we transition from summer to fall.
With fall comes the start of the holiday season, and with that comes visitors! Our island welcomes our seasonal residents and visitors alike, adding a little extra energy to our fall season. Our streets in Christiansted and Frederiksted come alive and our restaurants fill up. Many of our musicians come back for the season, and you can hear the strums of their guitars and the beat of their drums as you stroll along our cobblestone streets, adding so much liveliness to our fall season. Our winds pick up, cooling off our summer heat, and the flora and fauna change just slightly.
For those of us who live here, we take notice that fall is here and that soon we will be welcoming our winter friends to St. Croix.

We are now approaching the end of the summer months and it is very exciting that the heat and humidity will soon be toning down. This gives everyone in S Florida the opportunity to enjoy the outdoors more without the overwhelming intensity given off by the summer sun.

Our climate here cannot be beaten between the end of October all the way thru to the end of May. This is 7 months of bliss when the snowbirds come to town to enjoy all the outdoor activities the area has to offer.

You will see a lot more people exercising outdoors, strolling along the beach, or playing games in the many local parks.

What I enjoy most once the fall weather is upon us is the opportunity to dine outside in the multitude of outstanding local restaurants. I love to sit in the open air and basque in the gorgeous views offered by the ocean or Intracoastal front establishments. There is always something to see and it is so much fun to watch the parade of boats up and down the inland waterways around town.

To endure a few months with 92-degree heat and 80% humidity is certainly worth it to be rewarded with the perfect climate we are blessed with once fall arrives.

I'll attend any Oktoberfest events that go on locally. Trying fall-flavored beverages and enjoying music is a must. My spouse and I also look out for "Halloween" themed drive-in movies where we'll bring pizza and our favorite snacks.

HR: What would you say is the lifestyle associated with owning a vineyard?

Owner: Well, you soon learn the lifestyle is two-fold. First, there’s the idyllic setting, the joy of producing a great vintage, and the fun of sharing it with your friends and family, and then secondly you realize that you are becoming a farmer of sorts. You get in touch with the seasons and nature and the grapes and you develop a feel for your land. The end product is a result of your attention to the flora and fauna surrounding your home.

HR: If you sell the estate is the business side included such as the branding of the Wish vineyard, social media, trademark, etc.?

Owner: Yes, and it's up for discussion because first of all there are two things: the technical side of it is that Wish has the licenses and licenses have to be approved and there's paperwork that goes with that side of it. But more importantly, I think is the idea that the branding is personal to us, each person that owns a vineyard picks their own brand. If they fall in love with the Wish logo and trademark and social media that's great and I'd be happy to sell that along with it, but I would think that whoever buys the vineyard would want to establish their own brand. It’s more of a buyer’s choice. 

HR: How much and what kinds of wine are produced per year.

Owner: The vineyard has a capacity for about 300 cases a year. Sometimes we reduce something or depending on quality we’ll make a different call. We have Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and we primarily do a Meritage blend. And each year we determine what type of wine will be made depending on what the grapes tell us.

HR: Who does the vineyard harvesting and maintenance?

Owner: We have a contracted vineyard crew that maintains the vineyard and harvests the grapes.

HR: So the buyer could continue with the contract?

Owner: Yes, they’ve been there several years they know the run of the vineyard it’s not like whoever buys it is going to have to go out there and start trimming vines.

HR: Does it has an AVA (American Viticultural Area) compliant designation

Owner: yes we are actually members of the Malibu AVA and the Meritage society which allows us to use the Meritage marker on our bottle. And Meritage is a trademark that denotes a Bordeaux blend because we have Bordeaux grapes. 

HR: Are there any tax benefits?

HR: Why do you think someone would want to own a vineyard

Owner: Other than the glamour *laughs*, well in addition to the lifestyle answer above, the wine community is an all-encompassing group of people. We've met winemakers on 6 different continents that share similar and some divergent stories to our own. A vineyard becomes a part of your family, like another child you watch it develop from year to year. As the vineyard has matured, we have also grown as grape growers and winemakers; our wines have taken on characteristics of our own makings and preferences. 

HR: What advice would you give for someone who will own it in the future?

Owner: To embrace the vineyard and have it become a part of who you are. You connect yourself to the vineyard, you feel what it needs, it helps drive decisions you make about your life, your travel, your growth, and knowledge. You expand your circles in ways related to wine, educating yourself about wine lifestyles around the world. I would advise new owners to jump in wholeheartedly and look at the vineyard as an old friend who will be there for the long run.

Moss, the appointed general contractor of the condominium, led the concrete pour of the 12-story boutique Bayfront building located at 6800 Indian Creek Drive, which utilized 250 cubic yards of concrete and 20 tons of reinforcing steel to fill the 12” concrete slab covering approximately 6,700 square feet.

Approximately 75 percent of the foundation work for Monaco Yacht Club & Residences have been completed, which includes the installation of 403 60 feet deep Auger Cast Piles totaling more than 1,314 cubic yards of concrete. Moss has also pumped over 70 million gallons of water to-date through a de-watering system that pumps approximately 700 gallons of water per minute. Having recently erected the tower crane onsite, only two more pours remain for completing the first level of the project.
