Leslie Saul founded Leslie Saul & Associates (LS&A), an Architecture and Interior Design firm almost 30 years ago with the following mission: to make the world a better place for people who work, play, age, live and learn.

Lesli Saul's wealth of experience and knowledge has led to countless success stories and satisfied customers. One of the more exciting of these stories is LS&A's continued and growing partnership with high-end French furniture company, Roche Bobois. The esteemed French company has been collaborating with LS&A for over 16 years now. Leslie Saul took the time to explain this successful and exciting ongoing design partnership in further detail.

"LS&A architecture and interiors started working with the French furniture company, Roche Bobois, over 16 years ago in 2005. Since then, we have been the project architect for five stores for the creative, high-quality firm that is based in Paris. Our most recent store, the new location for Boston, in Back Bay, is almost complete. We can’t wait for the opening in the next few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy the photographs of the store in Natick, MA. This exciting store was designed in Paris and interpreted and developed by us.

"One of the great pleasures of working with Roche Bobois, besides the terrific Regional Director, Pierre Berardo, is that our residential clients can take advantage of our knowledge of the products, the salespeople, and the good-value pricing. I also love that the stores are projects that are open to the public, as opposed to our design work for private homes, which remain private (as they should). Retail design is fun and for the public! Bienvenue à tous!"

Leslie Saul & Associates specializes in additions and renovations. The team of architects and interior designers thrives on challenging assignments in the New England and South Florida areas.

Principal at LS&A, Leslie Saul, recently explained the impact a structure's architecture can have on the interior design.

"It seems that some people are confused by the fact that I am both a licensed architect (MA, FL, IL, OH) and licensed interior designer (FL, IL, CT). Interior designers are not licensed in some states. Generally, the license for interior design is required for commercial projects only, not for residential projects. In most states, even residential projects require an architect’s stamp for a building permit. My firm and I do both commercial and residential projects, so we need licenses in the states in which we do projects. I passed the national interior design test first, then after having more experience, I took and passed my architectural licensing exam. I also am an accredited LEED professional for building design and construction. All of these credentials require continuing education to maintain my licenses. I guess I’m a glutton for punishment!

"I know that this doesn’t answer the question. How does my architect head influence my interior design head? First, I don’t see a big divide between the two. I like the interiors and exteriors to speak to each other (and sometimes they don’t agree!) In fact, we do the interior finishes and furniture selections and procurement specifications for other architects on very large projects, such as the academic libraries for Williams College, U Mass Dartmouth. In each case, it is extremely important that we understand the architecture and that there is a seamless feeling between the architecture and the interiors.

"Second, even as architects for our own projects, we want both the architecture and the interiors to reflect the hopes and dreams of our clients. Each project should be custom designed for the needs and wants of the people who will use the spaces/buildings. I think that house design is driven by the interior requirements on the inside, and by the context of the street/neighborhood in which it sits. I often describe the best projects as the overlapping space of a Venn diagram. One circle represents the client, one circle represents design ideals, and one circle represents community. Community in this context represents not only zoning and building codes, but also the planet, so that we are building resilient buildings that don’t harm the planet. That sweet spot where they overlap will result in a project that is going to be good for the client, good for the architect/designer, and good for the community at large.

"Last, we want to create a bit of wow, whimsy, fun, and focus in every project. It is the unexpected detail that makes us love our projects over time. We want to control what your eye sees as you move through the spaces. If everything screams for your attention, you will not know where to look, where to rest, and it may leave you with a headache! This fourth dimension of design, time, is another element to consider.

"So yes, I have a lot of credentials, all in service of making good design that works!"

Leslie Saul recently discussed how she approaches each design project and shared some lessons she has learned throughout her successful career.

Haute Design: You have nearly 30 years of experience in running and operating your own design and architecture firm. What is the most valuable lesson you have learned during that time?

Leslie Saul: Do the right thing, even if it's hard. You will build trust and loyalty with your clients, suppliers, vendors, contractors, artisans and employees.

HD: What is your favorite part about serving the Cambridge, Massachusetts region?

LS: We love New England and South Florida! While people might associate New England's climate with snow storms, it is the design climate here that makes our work so fun. Additionally, our clients and team members are extraordinarily smart and collaborative.

HD: When approaching a new design project, what is the first thing on your mind?

LS: Who are the people who will be living in this house? What makes them different from other clients? Even if we have done the same program many times, each client and each site or setting is different. We specialize in additions and major renovations, so we think about the big picture to start. Later, we think about some wonderful, personalized details that can make a difference in our clients' lives.

HD: What is typically the most difficult room to work on within an interior design project?

LS: The hardest rooms to design are the multi-purpose rooms. My theory of 'keep it simple' is put to the test when one space must serve many uses. We were hired to design a studio apartment in Manhattan, and there was a whole lot of living going on in a small space. Whenever faced with the impossible, I think about the creativity of the RISD environment and try to imagine, 'what can be?'

HD: To what do you attribute the continued success of your firm?

LS: When you like to create bespoke spaces tailored to your clients' needs and dreams, and when you like to work collaboratively with the client and the team of builders and the artisans who bring those dreams to life, it's so much fun! The process is part of the fun of making good design. Luckily, our wonderful clients keep coming back for more.

Also, I try to express my appreciation for everyone involved in every project. My mother taught me to write thank you notes.
