As a result of COVID, we are spending significantly more time in our homes. While stay-at-home orders have relaxed, lingering concerns over our safety keep us from venturing out as often as we would like. Therefore, it should almost go without saying that your home decor should make you feel comfortable, and truly at home. Part of that sense of comfort comes from who you are. Your decor should reflect your personality.

So, how do you decide what style or styles best match you? Do the unornamented sleek lines of mid-century modern tempt you? How about the clean, easy-going minimalism of Scandinavian? Or perhaps you are more of a cool brash industrialist. If your answer to any of these questions is "yes," then the authenticity movement may be just what you need.

What Does it Mean to be Authentic?

The choices we make in designing our living spaces reflect who we are as individuals and have the potential to inspire those who visit our homes. The furniture we choose, the color palettes we implement, and even the dominant shape themes we use say something about how we view and approach the world.

Authenticity is about making choices that enlighten you and fit the personality you want to portray. But who am I?

A great deal of research has gone into understanding how the choices we make speak to our personality characteristics. One immediate way to plan your design scheme is to understand how "you" matches with design elements.

Colors, for example, can speak to our characteristics. People who love blue tend to be reliable and sensitive. The preference for tidiness and their desire for stability suggest that elements of unornamented minimalism or the weighty furnishings of traditional might match well with their authentic style. On the other hand, those who enjoy purple are often artistic, unique and may be perceived as arrogant. People of this element might enjoy the more unusual lines of a zig-zag chair or the quirkiness of an eclectic style.

Shapes can also tell us something about our psychological make-up. Based on Susan Dellinger's book on psycho-geometrics (and yes, that is apparently a field), people who are drawn to squares typically do not like surprises, are organizers and seek a sense of security - traits that connect well to more traditional styles like classicism. Round lovers are more forthright and outgoing and match well with the eclectic sense of style. Look out lovers of curves and waves!

Squiggly lines suggest the non-traditionalist who is creative, motivated, independent and sexy. These traits of the young professional often match well with urban styles like industrialism and modernism.

Even overall design schemes say something about who we are. Drawn to Scandinavian design? Chances are you're friendly, stylish and interested in culture. Tend toward the modern? You are likely driven, organized and professional. The traditionalist is poised and elegant. The minimalist is introverted and efficient. But remember that authenticity is about finding all the parts of yourself, so that one style does not have to define you. If you feel like your personality traits bridge certain styles, then try blending the styles to find what works for you!

What could have easily been a gut renovation, became instead a thoughtful plan to update and personalize the interiors while respecting the existing 1950s-era architecture of a 2,000 square-foot home in the prestigious North Bay Road neighborhood. "The bones were quite workable," says Luciana Fragali, the architect and designer who leads the team at Design Solutions Miami. Retaining the integrity of the structure also meant preserving the original wood beam ceiling over the dining room. "It's part of the '50s vernacular of Miami, now a part of history," Fragali says. To maximize the aesthetic but still achieve their design goals, they left walled-in private courtyards on the exterior, but removed the pebbled covered flooring and overgrown vegetation with a wooden desk and Kettal outdoor furnishings. "We wanted to emphasize more tropical modernism, less mid-century," she adds with a laugh.

Fragali, who has clients all over the world, grew up in Brazil, a country known for its rich interior design influence. She is known for creating homes with functional beauty. "We do not only deal with logistics, but also create space for each client's own life. How they work and entertain - we love to get into their worlds. It's what drives our aesthetic."

These clients realized they needed more space for their children and grandchildren. So, in 2016 they bought the sprawling residence with an 8,000 square-foot lot after searching for three years. The wife, who was also born in Brazil, already knew Fragali. The leader of the DS Miami team had previously designed and oversaw the renovation of their daughter's Brickell apartment. "They're from a famous, renowned design firm and we knew them socially," the wife reveals when asked how she initially heard of Luciana Fragali. "Luciana had given us great advice during our daughter's project, so I trusted her implicitly."

With a masterful use of rich hues, luxurious furnishings and refined finishes, the interior came alive. The restored wooden beam ceiling adds drama and anchors the dining area, cresting intimacy in the immense space. The massive round, wood Taj dining table - a Luan Del Savio design - balances out the delicate leaves of light that grace the coronal silhouette of the Moooi Heracleum Small Big O LED Chandelier overhead. The client says guests love to linger long after dinner is over. Leather caramel-colored chairs by Marcelo Ligieri balance out the room.

In the living room, Fragali had her heart set on cheerful vibes. "But I wanted to also have a sophisticated and relaxed feel," she adds. Life and color are brought into the space via the accessories, rug, Missoni pillows and a beautiful Palessandro marble slab used for the TV wall unit. A unique piece is the light blue Denny sofa by Anima Domus in pampas leather. It adds the perfect touch to the overall design.

Paying careful attention to the concept of indoor/outdoor living, Fragali designed rooms to draw the exterior inward and the eye outward. The flowing spaces - from the open-plan kitchen, to the sunroom, to the outdoor pergola - were adapted to suit a family. "Everything in the house, even though it is beautiful, is extremely comfortable and durable for the family. They didn't want to worry about fragile fabric," says Fragali.

When it was time to renovate the outdoor area, the dated kidney bean-shaped pool, former BBQ area and scalloped awning were demolished. Fragali redesigned the pool, patio and landscaping. The pool deck, bright with Kettal outdoor furniture, has multiple areas for the family and the children's friends to hang out, sun bathe or read. The additional space helped the family through COVID-19 lockdowns, remote schooling and zoom calls.

"When you have a long relationship with your client (we've been friends over 10 years), it makes the job easy and comfortable," Fragali reveals. "This is the result of a great relationship with a client and friend."

Chasity Centeno, Principal at Riese Design, recently spoke to Haute Design about the rising trend in clients requesting space reinvention within their homes as a direct consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Haute Design: It seems most, if not every design project in the past two years involved some form of space reinvention in order to adapt to extending periods of indoor living. What are three main aspects you consider as a designer in order to help clients make this adjustment?

Chasity Centeno: Since the onset of COVID-19, spatial needs within the home have changed drastically. Over the last two years we have seen an increase in the need for home offices, recreational spaces, home theaters and gyms. In designing these spaces, to accommodate families, we any child undergoing homeschooling due to school closures, along with spouses whose offices have since closed as a measure of precaution, leading them to work remotely. In doing so, we interview clients extensively in order to hone in on their needs and wants. Considerations can be whether or not they need single or double work stations, storage, multifunctional spaces and things of the like.

HD: Will clients expect these sorts of amenities to be included in homes on a standard level moving forward? If so, how does that change the job of the designer?

CC: Every family is different and every project is different in its own regard, both pre-COVID and during the pandemic. At Riese Design, we accommodate our clients' needs as we have always done as standard practice.

HD: How can designers help make a living space feel more natural and less likely to cause residents to feel cooped indoors?

CC: There is an ongoing trend of incorporating organic elements in order to bring the outside in. In doing so, people feel more connected to the outdoors. Some examples would be using living walls and plants to add greenery and foliage to a home's interior. If there are any renovations where we can add windows to increase the amount of natural light, we incorporate that as well as natural light increases productivity and stimulation.

HD: How did the Greenlawn basement look before the renovation project? What was the biggest challenge throughout the renovation?

CC: The Greenlawn house was a new-build, so the basement was completely empty; it was just a raw, concrete shell. The biggest challenge was space-planning in the most efficient way possible in order to provide all desired spaces for the couple. The spaces included a mud area, a full bathroom, a recreational area, wet bar, theater room, living room, snack bar and home gym, while also providing the maximum amount of storage.

Helaine recently spoke to Haute Design about her favorite part of a design project and what she sees for her firm's future.

Haute Design: When did you first decide to pursue a career in design?

Helaine Tregenza: My very first job in design was in New York in the 70s as a milliner. When I moved to California thirty years ago and bought my first house, that was when I truly decided to pursue a career in design.

HD: Was there anything particular about California that led to this decision, or was it simply a transitional point in your career?

HT: I believe it was just this desire to apply what I knew about design in fashion and art, and translate that to a structure or a building and learning how it all comes together. Once design is in your blood, it applies to your whole life - at least it has for me. Interior design is a form of art but it's also science and math.

HD: What would you say is your strongest attribute as a designer?

HT: I would say that it's my ability to listen to clients and problem-solve. We must consider space, scale, color, light and of course, I want to create a beautiful environment, but it also has to function. I always ask, 'how does the client live in this space?' Form definitely follows function.

HD: What would you say sets your firm apart from others?

HT: We only take a handful of clients at a time. Because of this, we provide a bespoke and very custom experience. We are very selective about our projects and we're extremely hands-on throughout the design process.

HD: What is your favorite part of the process in a design project?

HT: That's like asking who's your favorite child. But I will say, I am especially fond of textiles and lighting and selecting artwork. That's kind of like the icing on the cake. To be able to work with the client at the end of a design project and select art, as an art collector myself, is just a total treat.

HD: How would you describe your own design aesthetic?

HT: I would say I'm a classicist with a twist and my design is very multi-layered. I like combining old and new. I like to create a collected look as opposed to one particular style.

HD: Where do you see your firm five years down the road?

HT: I expect we will be happily bringing more clients' vision to realization. I am open to doing some travel for projects but really just doing more of the same. For now, my main focus is to continue to provide a bespoke, turn-key experience for residential spaces.

Hafsa Burt, founder of hb+a Architects, is actively involved with the American Institute of Architects and is a member of the AIA California Council’s Committee on the Environment that also looks at legislative decisions as they relate to the building environment. Hafsa recently spoke to Haute Design about the future of architecture and design and how connected it is to our environment.

Haute Design: If there has been any at all, what has the environmentally-conscious progress in design and architecture looked like over the past decade? Is it enough?

Hafsa Burt: After the oil embargo of the 1970s, California Energy Code was developed, which is updated for more stringent requirements for high performance buildings in each code cycle.

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and Living Building Institute made environmentally sustainable architecture a household term, and then CalGreen, which is a State Code, further laid out requirements with similar parameters so it was easy for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)- Accredited professionals to implement them in their projects. And to answer your question, no, it is not enough. In my experience, unless something is mandated, it is not followed. Reach codes are being widely adopted since 2020, and these have more stringent requirements than Title 24 in California.

HD: As an environmentally conscious designer the issues at the heart of your work are inherently political. Has this ever affected any relationships with clients?

HB: I don't think the issues are political, as much as they are being made political, because of a few spokespeople, which is terribly sad. Clients in general are concerned about the economics of a measure(s), unless their vision is aligned with reduction of emissions or decarbonization. Most people, unless they are focused on these issues, simply do not feel they are priorities. I have also seen a rise in maximalist tendencies in design, which scares me in the long term. Design heroes need to be folks who are coming up with carbon neutral solutions, and have been actively implementing them for decades.

HD: How much can new technologies available to us today, as opposed to 10 or 20 years ago, help progress design while minimizing damage caused to its surrounding ecological system?

HB: I have met some young startups who have fascinating explorations for off-shore wind farms, theoretically, we can meet all of our energy demands if this technology was funded and usefully deployed, but the bureaucratic climate isn't set up for these technologies to be launched fast enough. We have an impending goal to reduce emissions by 65% by 2030, and our current clean energy sources aren't enough to meet present or projected future demands. Solar energy for homes and businesses has been around since the 1970s and their efficiency has improved, and their cost has reduced over the years, but there are limits for its widespread use, intermittent supply and on-site storage.

HD: Considering that you are based in the West Coast, what are the most common environmental concerns or questions you get from clients?

HB: Most everything still comes down to economics. We start with educating our client. I have been working at the State level with like-minded industry peers for over 15 years to make sure legislation is taking into account measures which address emissions' reduction and decarbonization. General consumers however, need to be educated through the process. That is one of the reasons why I created Box Lab, to build carbon neutral prototypes and showcase solutions. California has always been at the forefront and can only set an example for best practices elsewhere.

HD: Are there other collaborators or designers whom you feel are doing impactful work such as yourself?

HB: I am currently working on a zero-energy commercial project in Rancho Cordova with Green World Hub, a general construction team. The project will produce all of its own energy with battery backup so the business remains resilient when power fails.

Hafsa recently took the time to speak with Haute Design regarding an affordable housing proposal her firm submitted for Melbourne, Australia.

Haute Design: Do you typically engage in projects overseas?

Hafsa Burt: We typically do seek work overseas and frequently respond to design challenges that tackle a unique set of problems and address larger social or environmental issues.

HD: How would affordable housing benefit the surrounding community? Is affordable housing a major issue in Melbourne?

HB: Melbourne, just like any growing metropolis, will need 1.6 million new homes to be constructed over the next couple of decades. This proposal was created for a design challenge where the task was to address the housing problems by creating affordable solutions. Solutions were meant to be varied enough to accommodate a diverse set of users from individuals to families.

HD: You mentioned this project included cutting-edge technologies. Could you tell us a little bit about what that entails?

HB: We stacked up shipping containers in a grid-like pattern, vertically and horizontally, and arranged them individually for smaller size units, and for the larger units, we combined configurations with two more containers. The grid is formed by structural members in a matrix-like pattern, with the containers sliding into the slots.

HD: You are known for creating environmentally sustainable buildings and spaces. How will this proposal for the affordable housing project follow suit?

HB: We take pride in thinking outside the box, so there is no one single formula for a problem, but rather a mindset rooted in experimentation. The overarching concept for this proposal is creating multi-family blocks which rely on renewable energy sources and therefore are clean in their operations. Energy usage is further monitored by onsite applications.

HD: What is the timeline regarding the next steps?

HB: The next steps are to further develop the solutions and to create configurations that aren't cuboid in nature. This way, the buildings can be constructed on infill sites no matter how small the area and further allow the building elevations to harness solar energy.

Enter model unit 4403 at the Residences by Armani Casa and you will see interior finishes that are simple yet elegant, clean yet refined, and views from each room which are nothing short of extraordinary. It came as no surprise at all when Luciana Fragali, Principal at Design Solutions Miami, was contacted by Paulo Bacchi of Artefacto. After a decade-long friendship and over 100 design collaborations, it was apparent that this partnership was built for success.

Luciana was tasked to create a warm, elegant and welcoming environment for potential buyers who might enter the unit, while Artefacto would provide the luxurious furnishings seen throughout the spaces. "When we first received this project, it was as basic as they come - white, are walls and there was scarcely any overhead lighting. But we knew it had tons of potential," says Fragali. The Design Solutions team's work began at the foyer where they skillfully treated each wall with textured wallpaper, representing the sand of the beaches directly in front of the unit. This element comes through most when paired with the fun and colorful accessories and artwork, which also serve to bring that contemporary touch that every unit needs. The Artefacto "Pipo" armchair by Piegatto brings an organic feel courtesy of its curved wooden design.

Step inside, where you are greeted by wave blue wooden panels meant to mimic the fluidity of the ocean views throughout the unit. This panel was created by Casa Metier. Instinctively, your eye is drawn to a spacious open concept living room where the design team of DS Miami had one mission: integrate ocean views with natural elements. The first step was to create a shell or foundation with a mix of earthy materials including stone, wood, leather, linen and natural raffia.

The corner kitchen can give the illusion of a tight space. With that in mind, Luciana and her team created a bar unit to serve as an extension of the kitchen, consequently opening the room. The dark grey stone by Modern Porcelain Works brings a modern vibe to the unit while the lighter wooden shelves add warmth. LED strip-lighting hidden behind the shelves, along with Artefacto's Annecy ottomans in nubuck leather, add the perfect touch of charm to this bar unit.

Over the dining room, a Moooi Pendant takes center stage over Artefacto's JUD II dining table and Chiara chairs. The caramel color of the Chiara dining chairs serves as a natural pop of color, perfectly accentuated by the lively artwork by artists Eduardo Rezende. The metallic finish of the natural raffia-textured wallpaper behind the artwork ties the room together, giving it the contemporary feel the design team was aiming for.

The mirror wall along the living room was strategically designed to add continuity to the unit, allowing the Atlantic Ocean coastline to pour into the room. This also works in harmony with Artefacto's elegant furnishings characterized by clean lines and intimate ooziness. A plush sofa with surfaces that reflect the condo's ever-changing light envelops the area and yields a fluid ambience. The media wall is covered in a natural raffia wallpaper with an iridescent finish, reminiscent of mother of pearl. Silk accent pillows continue the playful shimmer.

This project was a difficult one due to its time restrictions. The Design Solutions team had only 40 days to create an execute the project. Luciana adds that there was not even time to apply for permits. "We usually like to drop the ceiling to add more recessed lighting," she says. "With only 40 days, we had to think outside the box." For additional lighting to the large living room, the design team turned to Fadecci Architectural Lighting, whose team able to source a unique floating track for the 10-foot ceiling, eliminating the need for a dropped ceiling.

The master bedroom offers breathtaking Atlantic Ocean views through four-to-ceiling windows. This room was designed exclusive with Artefacto furnishing, the crown jewel being the Piet king-sized bed and headboard. Centaur Interiors is a boutique firm specializing in turn-key bespoke solutions for residential interior renovation and construction. With meticulous attention to detail, the dynamic team at Centaur Interiors, under the leadership of founder Michael Miller, has rapidly transformed the landscape in the residential design/build market in Chicago.

This particular riverfront residence makes an excellent argument for Centaur Interiors' commitment to delivering innovation, precise execution, extraordinary design and superior customer service to each and every client. The riverfront project developed from an existing relationship from a client who had entrusted Centaur Interiors to create a full vision for his new condominium residence. Situated high along the river, the client's initial desire was to update the powder room and fireplace and TV wall in the living room. However, the initial wish rapidly blossomed into a full renovation as the owner's trust in the team, as well as their excitement for the project, took over. The concept was to create a warm, modern space that did not feel too stark. Comfortable furnishings were a key element which were also durable for entertaining and everyday use.

You are initially drawn into the home by a feature wall incorporating translucent quartzite stone, floating in bronze channels at the fireplace. Both of which are backlit with a LED flat light to thread the custom mahogany bookshelf into the fireplace as one cohesive feature. The original flooring was replaced with darker, wide planked, hand scraped oak, which ties the space together.

The goal for the kitchen remodel was to lighten and modernize the space, while still meeting the client's desire for a transitional, warm, livable area. The Centaur team used mahogany millwork as an accent and feature throughout the home. The island cabinetry is wrapped by a dual waterfall of Taj Mahal which incorporates a floating custom dining table on a uniquely-shaped bronze base. The light satin lacquered cabinets and quartzite stone brighten the space up for a perfect blend in the kitchen.

The master bedroom boasts a full custom bed with mahogany wood framing and leather-wrapped panels. The fireplace surround was designed with new limestone, custom mahogany millwork panels, along with a place for both art display and the TV. The tones and colors used in the room were intentional to create a mood and lean more toward a masculine feel. The Centaur design team worked closely with the client to curate art for the home. The client's never-ending collection completes the residence and makes for the perfect home to live in day to day.

Dorothy Alon, founder of prominent Los Angeles-based design firm, Sophea Interior Designs, has established herself in the last decade among Los Angeles developers, contractors, and other thought leaders in real estate. Dorothy has built her reputation as someone whose intuition and insight comes through in every project that she undertakes.

"We do things a little bit differently," says Dorothy. "About 90% of my clients are developers. After becoming familiar with the scale of work that I have done, along with my extensive experience in the field, they have developed the trust and understanding that we are a team and we are in this together. I think they appreciate that I'm not only focused on 'making things look pretty.' Instead, my approach is more like, 'yes, make this look pretty, but make it functional as well'."

Sophea Designs does not only handle the design aspect of a home, but it also participates in the planning and building process.

"Ideally, the architect gives me the floor plan before even going to the engineer," Dorothy explains. "Because we try to insure that all the interior built-ins and functional spaces are accounted for in order for us to not be limited by the structure itself."

"While interior design is a broad spectrum and entails a multitude of specialties, I decided early on to focus on spec homes and new construction projects. This kind of business requires the interior designer to be involved early on in the process. Typically, we are getting the floor plans after the architect's first draft and we are looking at the house placement on the site map. Then we check that all the main spaces are sufficient and proportional to the scale of the house, both in space and return on investment. We proceed by verifying every window and door size and location. Lastly, we are making sure all standard furniture works in the space and we have enough wall space for cabinets, storage and art. Once this is complete, we continue with designing and selecting finishes. If we have any comments throughout this part of the process, we send it back to the architect to hear their thoughts. We respect the work they have done so far and would like to make sure we are giving our client the best product possible in terms of architecture and interior. In essence, the architect is the conductor and we are the orchestra. We work with all architectural softwares to make it easy for them to quickly respond and keep the work streamlined."

Dorothy's passion in describing the ins and outs of her work and her company's functions is palpable. "I think about everything," she says. "I think of every house we work on as my own investment and as if I were going to live in each and every one of them. That is how I think. This is my mentality toward every home I have designed. I have worked on hundreds of houses and I start every project with the same amount of excitement. The passion toward what I do is what keeps me going. In that sense, we are different. We care. We really care about what we do."

Denver-based designer Andrea Schumacher is never one to shy away from neither textures nor colors. This becomes more than evident after a quick scroll through her Instagram page. Andrea knows how to walk a fine line where her projects are fresh, yet timeless and no two are ever alike. With that in mind, one could only imagine the serendipitous joy of Andrea's clients when they connected over Facebook. While the then-engaged, now-married couple loved the structure and exterior of this Cherry Village home, they felt the interior lacked some joy. The clients made it clear to Andrea that they wanted her to have fun with this redesign.

Andrea began with a coat of white paint to lighten up the previously brown and heavy interiors of the home and things took off from there.

The color palette throughout the home was heavily inspired by the Serendip wallpaper by Manuel Canovas, seen in the dining room. Andrea's clients were not afraid of color and it shows. The couple even chose to go with the very same wallpaper as their choice for colors in their dining room canopy chairs. The textures, designs and colors seen in the Cherry Village home are playful and light hearted.

The great room displays Andrea's innovative creativity and resourcefulness. Andrea and her team wrapped the fireplace in grasscloth, which helps hide the TV. This approach is also much more friendly on the budget than using stone. The matching colored sofas provide for a cohesive and uniform design narrative throughout the space. They were upholstered in Kravet's Ypsilon in Vizir.

Andrea keeps the levity and playfulness going in the sitting room, where plenty of natural light flows in to allow for a custom natural sheepskin rug step into center stage.

As a nod to the home owners' affection for dogs, Andrea added a flocked dog wall covering by Osborne and Little in an adjacent mudroom. The black and white from the mudroom connects to the center table and throw pillows within the sitting room .

The evidently entertaining project makes for a uniquely gorgeous home which does not take itself too seriously and has plenty of color and levity.

Michael Scigliano, Prinicpal of MS2 Design Studio, is known for going above and beyond expectations when it comes to executing modern, yet timeless interior design that speaks to the clients' individual lifestyles and requests.

Typically, luxury interior design and attention to detail do not go hand in hand with speedy delivery, but when it came to this beautiful Fort Lauderdale home, Michael made an exception. "This was the fastest project I have completed," Michael revealed. "To consult with the client, design, order, deliver and install furniture for a custom five thousand square foot home, would normally take at least seven to nine months. This home was completely installed in three months, per the client's request."

Despite this unique scenario, Michael revealed that this was a smooth and enjoyable design process.

"The time crunch was the biggest challenge. The clients were a delight to work with. They were decisive, had amazing taste and they gave me the freedom to design the home that I thought would be perfect for them. They fell in love with the home the second we presented it to the them."

Honestly, who could blame them? According to Michael, the clients are avid boaters and their only request was to have a light, ethereal space that complemented their yachting lifestyle.

As seen in the Poggenpohl kitchen above, there is a delightful mix of eclectic materials throughout this home, which lends to a beautifully layered aspect throughout each space. "I like mixing classic materials into all of the modern spaces we design. This tends to give a timeless feel to the project. The shapes are modern but the materials are timeless."

The speed in which this project was completed is even more impressive when considering that Michael and his design team were able to install custom millwork into the home's office and master closet as well as custom furniture pieces throughout.

In the bedroom, Michael and the MS2 team used only the finest of materials. The bedding is fully-comprised of Jesurum Italian linen from E. Braun in New York. Michael noted, "The customer introduced me to the Jesurum line. He uses them on his yacht and wanted the same quality in his two Master Suites. The high thread count, soft hand and custom embroidery options are unique to this line and added an extra couture touch to this home."

Haute Design: What three words best describe the House of One aesthetic?

Brittany Farinas: Elegant, Tailored, Artistic.

HD: What is your first memory in which you realized you wanted to become a designer?

BF: I remember my first time walking through a multi-million-dollar home. I knew I had a passion and appreciation for interior design when I realized my eye could not settle on one single place. I was in awe at all the amazing finishes throughout the property.

HD: How crucial is the relationship between designer and client either before or during a project?

BF: The relationship between designer and client is special because it is both personal and professional. We are able to deliver great designs because we develop such great relationships with our clients and can understand their wants and needs on a deeper level. Communicating throughout the design process is extremely important to us . As the designer, it is our job to constantly reassure our clients that we are on the same team and aiming for the same end goals. We want our clients to feel included in the design process and encourage them to contribute their ideas and inspirations. There's nothing more rewarding than a well executed project where both parties are equally as proud of the results.

HD: What advice would you give prospective clients before selecting an interior designer?

BF: I think the most important qualities a client should look for in a designer is their ability to listen as well as their attention to detail. This will transpire not only through the design but also the design process, which we strive to make as enjoyable and smooth as possible for our clients.

Kelly Dunn’s obsession with authentic expression is unparalleled and is the driving force behind her award-winning firm, FATHOM Design Company. Kelly is sought out by her colleagues as an expert on out-of-the-box solutions and blending colors and textures in imaginative ways that breathe new life into the world of interior design.

Kelly Dunn recently sat down and spoke to Haute Design to share some of her driving design principles.

Haute Design: What is the earliest memory you can recall where you knew you wanted to become a designer?

Kelly Dunn: I was a young teen when I would constantly rearrange the furniture in my bedroom. Sometimes the layout didn't even make sense, but I desperately needed my space to feel fresh and exciting. I would also rearrange my family's living room when my mom was out for the day, always promising to put everything back if she didn't like it, but I had to play with it and try new things.

HD: If you could name three design principles you live by, what would they be?

KD: 'AUTHENTICITY ALWAYS.' If your space does not reflect who you are to the core, something will feel off and you will always be frustrated.

'HAVE A CONVERSATION PIECE.' It continually breathes new life into your home.

'PLAY.' Introduce new colors and textures. Experience them, be curious. You may discover a whole new side of yourself that is waiting to be expressed.

HD: You have stated that you are bored by trends. How crucial is the client's input to the ideas and design you put forth in any given project?

KD: Client input is critical. It's their space, so it must resonate with them. If they are leaning heavily on trends, I try to dig a little deeper to discover what it is they're attracted to. Then I show them variations of what they're looking for that acknowledges a certain trend but is ultimately expressive of their true identity. This balance always produces spectacular results.

HD: Is there a particular color or material you gravitate toward (consciously or subconsciously) throughout your work?

KD: There isn't a specific color but I personally gravitate toward dark and moody aesthetics. It certainly pops up in most of my work but ultimately, I focus on what is the best design representation for my clients' personal style.

HD: Has there been one particular factor to your work which you have implemented as a result of the COVID pandemic?

KD: The biggest hurdle the design community is still facing is that shipping is at least three times longer, production is either nonexistent or takes up to eight times as long and it has been difficult finding quality installers and finishers. Our clientele has been stir-crazy for so long and it's hard for them to wait on their finished spaces.

HD: Where do you see FATHOM Design Company in five years?

KD: Taking on more restaurant and hotel projects and expanding beyond NYC.

Chiara recently sat down with Haute Design to explain Sensi Casa's visionary service.

Haute Design: Would you mind explaining what Sensi Casa's Pronto Stay Service is?

Chiara Sensi-Contugi: We introduced the Pronto Stay Service a couple of years ago, so this is one of the newest services we offer to clients. However, due to the COVID pandemic and the trends we began noticing as a direct consequence of the pandemic, the Pronto Stay Service became an extremely popular option for clients.

What started happening was, like many people across the country, clients started moving down to South Florida during the pandemic. However, once they would buy or rent properties, they realized they needed to get furniture for these properties. So they would reach out to us for our interior design services and come to find that, due to the lack of furniture across the globe, they would have to wait months to have the ideal piece they were looking for.

But because we also have our home staging service, we own an extensive catalogue of furniture, ourselves. So we realized we could offer these pieces to our clients to rent out during their stay in South Florida.

Clients loved the idea of basically leasing their furniture, rather than buying it. During that time, a lot of people did not know how long they would be in Miami. Would this a permanent decision? One year? Two years? With the Pronto Stay Service, clients do not have to invest in a fully furnished house or property, when they run the risk of having to move all over again in a matter of one or two years.

So we began offering this option to clients and we still offer the interior design of the house based on the clients' needs. With Pronto Stay, we still interview the client, just like any other interior design service we offer. We ask them about their way of life and their needs. Whatever they need, we provide them with the corresponding furniture. The only difference being that they rent the furniture rather than owning it.

Of course, this service has the limitation that the pieces we offer are based off our inventory. Clients looking to have one-of-a-kind pieces or eclectic designs throughout their home, might not want to choose the Pronto Stay Service. However, we have adapted the decisions we make when purchasing furniture to add to our inventory and we do offer a wide array of luxury pieces.

HD: Have you noticed a particular clientele that is attracted to the Pronto Stay Service?

CS: It varies. A lot of the clients are coming from other states, rather than locals. Mostly, it's folks coming from New York or Los Angeles, who were not sure how long they were going to remain in South Florida after moving down, temporarily or otherwise.

Younger clients have also been very attracted to the Pronto Stay Service because they are looking for alternatives that would not demand too much of them, financially. Whether they are moving to a new apartment or just starting to live on their own for the first time, they tend to not have enough money to afford a fully-furnished home. But when you give them the option to rent furniture and create a monthly spending plan, it becomes a much more attainable alternative for that age group.

HD: Are you aware of any service that comes close to offering what the Pronto Stay Service offers?

CS: I am pretty sure there were other companies renting furniture. But I am also confident that very few, if any companies, were actually designing a home around the client's needs in a furniture rental capacity.

Those who were offering furniture rentals were likely just offering whatever was available within their inventory but they were not actually executing any interior design. For better or for worse, we have seen a lot of competitors recently offer a very similar service to the Pronto Stay Service. Perhaps it's a good sign and it shows that we're doing something right when we see competitors imitating what we do and changing the name of the service.

HD: How do you see the Pronto Stay Service expanding in the future?

CS: Based on what we are seeing, it will be part of our service offering for a long time. I do not think it will be something that will be in high demand exclusively due to the current pandemic situation.

I would not go so far as to say that we discovered a niche market but I will say that we believe most people overlooked the option to rent the interior design service for one's home. By interior design, I do not want to come across as meaning just furniture. By interior design I mean, art, rugs, TVs, accessories, absolutely everything. We don't think it was on anyone's radar and it will be a service that is interesting for plenty of folks out there.

If you like to change your style frequently, this is an option that makes total sense. In the same way that someone would lease their car, we are offering the option to lease the interior of your home. Rather than purchasing furniture and then losing tons of money trying to sell it, because selling used furniture is simply not feasible, we hope to see clients take advantage of this option.

HD: Are there any limitations on the duration of time clients can rent out their respective furniture or designs?

CS: Because we provide high-investment pieces and exclusively branded furniture, we do not offer any short-term rentals, so nothing less than six months. We do request a security deposit in case anything may happen to any of our pieces. There is not maximum allotted time for the rentals or leases.

Another interesting feature to this service is that we offer a buy-in option. If you happen to change your mind and realize that this temporary move to Miami becomes a permanent one, we offer a buy-in option, which would end up being discounted because the client would have been renting the pieces initially, so they would simply pay off the rest of what is due from each respective piece.

The Mexican company's Miami homebase is an absolute stunner and adds a lovely touch to the Wynwood community's aesthetic and appearance. The Danish artistic group, SUPERFLEX, was commissioned to imagine the Arca Wynwood's facade. The group is comprised of three artists known for blending art, science and activism. Titled “Like A Force of Nature,” the artists use ARCA’s ceramic tiles designed by Hector Esrawe to create an installation that explores the contradiction of the two phenomena of currency and color merging with the naturally recurring Fibonacci mathematic sequence of numbers. Following a color palette inspired by the tones of Mexican banknotes, the work of art underlines the overwhelming experience of our current economic systems as natural as volcanoes or tsunamis, almost like a force of nature.

Arca recently welcomed luxury interior designer Cara Woodhouse at their Wynwood Design Center.

Cara encapsulates the fundamental values of design such as form, function and symmetry. She combines luxurious comfort with unsurpassed customer service. A lover of any and all things marble, Cara frequently collaborates with Arca throughout multiple interior design projects.

Cara Woodhouse Interiors is a full-service design firm based in New York. The design service includes architecture consulting, contract management, spatial planning, material and finish selections, custom furniture, millwork and antiquing. While design is Cara's passion, it also happens to be her job. Cara strives to find the perfect balance in each space.

The Dinner held at Arca's Wynwood Arts District gallery was a fun and intimate evening to honor this successful and ongoing collaboration.

The intimate evening in Miami began with a beautiful selection of wines as well as tequila and mezcal cocktails.

Guests enjoyed a gorgeous menu exclusively curated by the renowned Chef Masayuki Komatsu of the lauded Hiyakawa Miami Japanese restaurant. Follow Hiyakawa HERE.

The dinner's menu included a lovely Miso Soup to kick things off. Shortly after, a stunning Omakase Chirashi was placed on the table. Next, guests enjoyed a refreshing Torched Salmon Temaki as well as a Negihama Temaki, followed by Amaimono and an optional offering of espresso (or carajillo cocktails, for the bold) to end the delicious meal.

The evening brought together friends and acquaintances, new and old. Guests got to learn even more about the wonders of the excellent marble sourcing Grupo Arca is involved with. It was a wonderful night that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Hafsa Burt has been practicing architecture for 21 years. Her portfolio includes work at the San Francisco Airport, institutional buildings, multi-family buildings, hospitality, retail, medical office buildings, and custom single-family homes.

She also founded a development arm for the firm called Box Lab which is focused on active research and development in product and space design and zero energy/zero carbon buildings. An environmentalist, Burt adopted the 2030 challenge a decade ago and is a huge proponent of high-performance buildings. Her focus includes eliminating toxins with indoor air quality as a specialty. She actively speaks on the topic of indoor air quality as it relates to the practice of architecture and is an industry expert on “Healthy Building Practices”.

Burt recently spoke to Haute Design about concepts regarding healthy buildings and indoor air quality.

Haute Design: We are paraphrasing here, but you recently mentioned that most people place objects within an interior environment and call it 'design.' Why is it so important for clients to adopt a more holistic approach toward design?

Hafsa Burt: I do believe that oftentimes focus is more on the relationship of objects in a space and not so much on the long-term effects of the built environment on the planet or of a particular building on its occupants’ health. We’ve been preaching about healthy buildings and occupants’ health since 2009 and have done hundreds of peer advocacy talks on the topic.

Numerous studies have been done that show a direct correlation between our built environment and our health, therefore, to me, design is a well-thought-out solution that focuses on how occupants feel physically and mentally in a space and what affects the indoor environment might have on their wellbeing, including cognitive function.

HD: What are a few common efforts you are applying throughout your projects that will benefit the clients' well-being by way of air quality or other approaches you would like to highlight? 

HB: We look at the material data of all finishes and make sound choices based on their health impacts. Our focus is also on the big picture and how the space feels besides a two-dimensional aesthetic view. We also work closely with mechanical consultants to see how we can devise innovative ways to improve the air circulation  in a space and several other measures.

HD: Would you say designing with mental health in mind and designing with internal air quality in mind go hand in hand?

HB: I do believe that spatial design can contribute to mental health and indoor air quality affects cognitive function. Design of spaces can certainly affect mental health. A few years ago I visited a newly constructed micro-housing building and wondered if the residents could experience social isolation, depression in such a space. Access to daylight, possibly a view, well thought-out design solutions that focus on space, finishes and furnishings that are ‘safe’ all contribute to a healthy living space.

HD: Do you foresee a rise in health-conscious design as a result of the pandemic?

HB: Yes very much, we did a lot of consulting last year on how to prevent spread of disease in commercial and institutional buildings. We explored strategies that would allow touch less function and social distancing accompanied with a constant supply of fresh filtered air.

Before the pandemic, more than a decade ago we used case studies of legionnaire’s disease to advocate for healthy building strategies and with the pandemic it all became too real. More and more people are conscious of their surroundings and how it affects their health and productivity and are asking for strategies that can have a positive impact.

For this canal-front residence, interior designers Laila Colvin and Rafaela Simoes had to capture a sense of artistry and zeal, while bridging the gap between the original and renovated architecture.

As founders and creative directors, Laila and Rafaela have established Miami’s premier luxury interior design company, 2id Interiors. Regarded for their relevant and skillful approach to design, 2id Interiors is an award-winning, leading interior design firm servicing clients which are amongst today's well-known names in professional industries and entertainment spanning across South Florida, the U.S., and around the world with projects in Canada, Europe, and Brazil.

"The clients wanted the house to be modern but colorful. They also wanted to keep the Spanish character, but in a more contemporary fashion," said Simoes.

The original open staircase was the element that won over the clients. So, the duo made it the focus of the living area with a traditional wrought-iron railing and colorful ceramic tiles. The blue-and-white rug, made of Persian rug remnants, brings a graphic backdrop for the Brazilian-style furnishings in neutral fabrics.

A navy grass cloth covers the open shelving in the living area's built-in walnut cabinetry, which has a vertical slatted sliding panel that conceals the television when not in use.

Colvin explained, "The slatted panel is our signature. We always use it somehow."

In the dining area you can see a metal chandelier, a glass-topped table with an organic live-edged wood slab base, and a white-linen host chair counter alongside a Brazilian wood side chair with leather seats. It shows that the designers like to play with opposites in materials.

In the family room, the designers paired wood-sided tables with a blue plush velvet sofa and ottoman. Above, lining the wall, is a grouping of the family's favorite movie posters. The owners fell in love with a wooden sculpture Colvin and Simoes placed near a swivel lounge chair in a corner of the primary bedroom.

Overall, the house is a beautiful place to relax and have fun.

Haute Residence: You have written about interiors for over 20 years. When did you know you were going to one day write books?

Kate Watson-Smyth: I think every journalist would say they have one book waiting to get out and I have certainly always felt that. As a child, I wrote stories constantly. Later, as a frustrated news reporter who wanted to write features, I tried my hand at fiction but, it turns out I, literally, couldn’t make it up. So, I abandoned that plan. When I started the blog back in 2012 I hoped one day to turn it into a book and I’m grateful that I have been able to do that. Twice.

HR: Who do you think will benefit the most from Mad About The House: 101 Interior Design Answers?

KWS: This book is for absolutely everyone whether they are building an entire house or doing up a single room. The six questions you must ask before starting any scheme apply to every interior design job you do, whether professional or amateur, first time buyer or downsizer. It will help you work out your style and plan your budget. I wrote this book for us all.

HR: What is your favorite unique design tip from the book?

KWS: Don’t use white paint as a default. Just as you don’t pick a white top to wear with every skirt and pair of trousers, consider if white paint on the ceiling and woodwork really is the best complement to the colour on your walls. Sometimes a paler (or darker) shade is better, sometimes a contrast. And you should always, always, paint your skirting boards to match the walls. And the radiators.

HR: What differences do you see between interior design in the UK and in the US?

KWS: I’m not familiar enough with the US as a whole and I imagine perhaps it can vary widely from state to state, but taking the analogy from the wardrobe (always the first place to start when decorating as if you are happy wearing it you will be happy living in it) I would say that perhaps the UK is more eclectic - the dressing equivalent of street style - and in putting things together that shouldn’t work from a mix of high end and thrift stores to create a totally individual look. That said, it was an American - Nancy Lancaster (owner of Colefax & Fowler) - who took our English Country style and gave it back to us having made it more comfortable by adding carpet and heating to our draughty old houses. She also decreed that every room should have something a little bit ugly and that decorating a room was “like mixing a salad” insisting that rooms should feel informal enough to be comfortable so maybe there aren’t that many differences after all. I totally buy into her philosophy too.

HR: Which ‘famous’ space would you most love to be able to design (or, re-design) and why?

KWS: I have no desire to do famous places at all. There are other designers who do grand spaces and formal places. My interest lies in showing people in ordinary houses how to make the best of what they’ve got so they can create a home that tells their story.

HR: How does your new book compare to its predecessors?

KWS: This is the perfect companion to the last book which was all about how to find your style. This Q&A format is new but I think it follows on really well as it’s full of all the practical advice and design details although it stands alone pretty well too.

I was determined, with the last one, to break the mould of the pretty coffee table book that is all about pictures. I wanted to give help and information, not just something to look at, and that is one of the reasons I have used illustrations rather than photographs. That way readers don’t feel pushed into a particular style or look; they can work out their own likes and dislikes and create their own home accordingly without having to feel they must copy a certain look.

HR: Are you planning your next book already? What will it be about?

KWS: Yes, and I can’t tell you - at least not until I’ve told my publisher!

In an interview with Dezeen, Woodroffe said; “Since the invention of the city centre apartment, we’ve never really re-invented it. YO! Home is that new invention. Twelve moving parts drawing on the mechanics of stage scenery allow the transformation of an eighty square metre space, the size of a one bedroom apartment, into a much bigger home."

Though it may seem impossible that so many rooms and their accompanying accoutrements could fit into such a reduced square footage, the key to this concept is maximization of the functionality of space and the utilization of hidden compartments. For instance: the breakfast counter slides out from the walls of the kitchen, the dining table folds up from the floor, rooms are created using sliding partitions,  and the master bedroom is lowered over the sunken seating area in the living room.
