Michele (Cozy) Salazar was born in Miami, Florida, daughter of Suzanne “Sissy” De Maria and Joseph De Maria. Her childhood nickname “Cozy” stuck, evoking the warmth and charm she exudes. "Cozy" eventually evolved into her burgeoning brand name.

Cozy recently shared her thoughts behind separating work life and personal life in a conversation with Haute Design.

Haute Design: As you know, the design and architecture industry's "hours of operation" are anything but standard. How do you find the balance between career and personal life?

Cozy Salazar: I still struggle with this on a daily basis. I really love what I do and sometimes I have a hard time separating my 'work life' with my personal life. I tend to bring work home with me regularly, but as long as I leave the more stressful aspects of this job at the office, everyone is happy (or at least they pretend to be).

HD: Your children are often featured in your Instagram stories at work. Do they enjoy going to work with mom? Are they old enough to understand your line of work?

CS: I had my first daughter when my career started to pick up and that was tough. At the time, I did not have a full-time nanny, so Gianna went with me everywhere. I think it's because of this that she is so interested in everything I do. I bring her into the office for a couple of hours every week because she loves to be here. There are times where I'll be at a presentation and we find pieces of wallpaper and fabric samples that have little drawings on the back, which always makes me smile. Chiara, my youngest is only two, but I can already tell she has a good eye based off the shoes she picks out of my closet!

HD: Did you have a similar experience growing up? Would you ever go to work with your parents?

CS: Yes, my mom was always a working mom. I did not get to spend every minute with her, but the time we spent together was always special. She would take me into her office when I got out of school and I would always find ways to entertain myself there. She would always take me out for dinner afterward or sing in the car with me on the way home, and would always read me a book before bed.

HD: Have your girls expressed any desire to follow in your design footsteps? Do they ever share design input?

CS: They're still very little but I would love for one of them, if not both, to catch the design bug! It would be so special for me to teach them what I know, and to leave this to them one day. My oldest is very opinionated when she comes into the office, and although she may not know what she is doing, she definitely knows what she does and does not like, which is a crucial asset for decision-making in this business.

Regarded for their relevant and skillful approach to design, 2id Interiors in Miami is an award-winning leading interior design firm that provides in-depth service to clients who are amongst today's well-known names in professional industries and entertainment spanning across South Florida, the U.S., and around the world with projects in Canada, Europe, and Brazil.

Founders and Creative Directors Laila Colvin and Rafaela Simoes recently completed this stunning private residential project in Miami Beach. While this project initially presented challenges such as integrating eye-catching accessories and furniture into the spaces, Laila and Rafaela were up for the task and the Brazilian duo was confident the work that would go into this 6,000 sq. ft. tropical modern home would be well worth it.

With the mentality that a home reflects who its owner is, 2id Interiors knew this house could not be average, by any means. With that in mind, the 2id team made the home unique, unparalleled, vibrant, and filled it with eclectic art and bold patterns.

Because they we aware they would be designing a home that was made for entertaining guests and hosting plenty of gatherings, Rafaela and Laila made sure that each space feels inviting to all. The 2id Interiors designers carefully selected materials and furniture that not only would flow well from room to room, but would also highlight the client's art collection.

The entry to a home should always make a statement and the 2id duo made sure that this home would certainly follow this edict. The welcoming foyer vignette leads guests into a close-to-nature dining room, which immediately catches your attention. True to their Brazilian heritage, Rafaela and Laila love bringing the outdoors in, whenever they get the chance.

The bedroom is proof that Laila and Rafaela were not afraid to go big. "We had the pleasure of designing this very sleek and modern bedroom for our very cool client, " Rafaela said. "We were able to design a contemporary and edgy masculine bedroom." Laila added, "The powder room is also powerful and the kitchen turned out to be a stunning space for cooking, entertaining and eating."

Typically, a dark setting is not the first theme that would come to mind when designing a kitchen. The traditional or stereotypical assumptions are of white and bright-colored kitchens. However, 2id Interiors considered, "What if your kitchen broke the mold?" Here, shades of black and green add what white kitchens cannot - a seductive style that is both memorable and sophisticated.

It seems the 2id design team checked all the boxes in this project because after wrapping up this Miami Beach home, they have already gotten to work on a second project for this client.

Denver-based designer Andrea Schumacher is never one to shy away from neither textures nor colors. This becomes more than evident after a quick scroll through her Instagram page. Andrea knows how to walk a fine line where her projects are fresh, yet timeless and no two are ever alike. With that in mind, one could only imagine the serendipitous joy of Andrea's clients when they connected over Facebook. While the then-engaged, now-married couple loved the structure and exterior of this Cherry Village home, they felt the interior lacked some joy. The clients made it clear to Andrea that they wanted her to have fun with this redesign.

Andrea began with a coat of white paint to lighten up the previously brown and heavy interiors of the home and things took off from there.

The color palette throughout the home was heavily inspired by the Serendip wallpaper by Manuel Canovas, seen in the dining room. Andrea's clients were not afraid of color and it shows. The couple even chose to go with the very same wallpaper as their choice for colors in their dining room canopy chairs. The textures, designs and colors seen in the Cherry Village home are playful and light hearted.

The great room displays Andrea's innovative creativity and resourcefulness. Andrea and her team wrapped the fireplace in grasscloth, which helps hide the TV. This approach is also much more friendly on the budget than using stone. The matching colored sofas provide for a cohesive and uniform design narrative throughout the space. They were upholstered in Kravet's Ypsilon in Vizir.

Andrea keeps the levity and playfulness going in the sitting room, where plenty of natural light flows in to allow for a custom natural sheepskin rug step into center stage.

As a nod to the home owners' affection for dogs, Andrea added a flocked dog wall covering by Osborne and Little in an adjacent mudroom. The black and white from the mudroom connects to the center table and throw pillows within the sitting room .

The evidently entertaining project makes for a uniquely gorgeous home which does not take itself too seriously and has plenty of color and levity.

The latest expansion pack included in the Sims 4 simulation game offers an interior design career path.

Whether you are a new fan looking to learn as much as possible about the beloved simulation video game, or a veteran follower of the Sims series, there is something new exciting in the game's latest included in the Dream Home Decorator Game Pack.

Players will be able to live out their interior design fantasies as they engage in the video game's newest career path. Sims 4's latest expansion allows players to meet with clients, discuss likes and dislikes within design and even give a big reveal once your project is finished.

The 'Gig Tasks' included in this career path is said to grant more player control than previous editions of the game.

Apart from living out grandiose decorator fantasies, players will be able to do one thing that any designer will admit they have wished to have had the power to do once or twice in their careers: there is a 'send client away' option. After all, what's the fun of playing Sims if it's too close to reality, right?

For more information on The Sims 4: Dream Home Decorator, head to the EA website and see all the information you need to start your latest simulation fantasy.

Minimalist design does not mean boring or basic. It may appear simple, but that’s just an optical illusion architect, designer, and artist Luciana Fragali has been perfecting for decades. The Brazilian-born designer produces exceptionally luxe spaces as a result of her innovative way of thinking and the unique materials and techniques she utilizes. “A project is not about decorating, but about figuring out the DNA of a space,” she says.

For this 7,718-total-square-foot oceanfront residence at Surfside’s Fendi Chateau, Fragali was tasked with giving this 5 bedroom 7 bath home a relaxed feel while emulating elegance and grandeur. The clients, who she met when they popped into her Miami-based architecture and design firm Design Solutions, had purchased this residence as a second home but while they knew they wanted warm and cozy elements – had no idea how to achieve it. Fragali’s architectural background and experience made her the perfect choice. Plus, she shared the clients’ appreciation for a minimal aesthetic that encompasses a sense of timeless beauty. “Clients know I’m going to give them a home that’s a reflection of their needs, personality, and culture,” she says.

Although the owners appreciated the high-rise building’s modern architecture by famed Florida-based firm Arquitectonica, they preferred a softer design for their own space. To set the tone from the outset, Fragali covered the walls in the foyer and great room—which contains the living and dining areas—with a mixture of fluted and non-fluted wooden panels. “It adds a softness, but it still has strength,” she says. The warm, tactile result counters the modern edge of the gleaming terrazzo marble flooring.

Inside, Fragali pays homage to the cerulean ocean and verdant landscape with a limited yet sophisticated natural palette of materials and colors. Leather, linen, glass, walnut, light, and shadow all take center stage here without visually competing. To add symmetry and simplicity to the unit, Fragali designed an elaborate system of invisible doors. The flawless systems seamlessly integrate into space so that they disappear when not in use. In the living room, she created a custom recessed wood ceiling in a sharp-edge architectural design that resembles delicate pieces of origami with integrated LED lighting as a way to make them seem higher.

Throughout the home, furniture is sourced from all over the world and from trusted partners such as Baxter, Poltrona Frau, and Artefacto. Unique pieces from these stores were responsible for adding that much-needed charm for example the statement piece selected for the ocean-facing living room displayed Artefacto’s natural wood coffee table, perfectly accompanied by Poltrona Frau’s Archibald lounge chairs – offering the perfect combination of substance and form. For Fragali, the dining room is the heart of the home. Here, she chose an oversized white lacquered table paired with Artefacto’s white leather- Infinity chairs that seat guests in the center of it all. Imagine a stunning display blooming above you, enter two Sky Garden pendants making a powerful impression with their sheer size- standing beneath it, you will see the intricate design that gives this piece its name.

The unit has a flow-thru plan from east to west, which allows the clients to enjoy both Atlantic Ocean views and western sunset views over the bay and Intracoastal Waterway. In the hallway leading to a masterfully designed family room, Fragali strategically placed a full-length mirror resting on wooden panels for depth accompanied by captivating artwork emitting tranquility and charisma. Emerging from this enchanting corridor you will be met with a modern yet earthy fashioned family room where earth tones take center stage. “Earth tones are inviting, relaxing, and lend well to a lot of different decor styles. The best part about earth tones in decor is you can switch up your decor easily without removing the bulk of your furniture.” Says Fragali. Earth tones are usually browns, beige’s, greens, and grays. When done right you can have a contemporary, modern, or bohemian room look well put together and be a relaxing environment. The trick is to keep almost everything neutral but to have just a few things that stand out. Here Fragali used the fierce crimson red offered by Lumen’s Twiggy floor lamp for that pop of color while also relying on textiles, fabrics, and accessories to tie in the room.

When asked to design the ultimate tv wall unit Fragali turned to her trusted millworker Diego Fulia of Fulia Inc, after 15 years of partnership – he was able to anticipate her needs and fabricate exactly what Fragali envisioned. Using a mixture of textured wallpaper, fluted wood panels, and natural wood for shelves this vision came to life – add the accessories and what you ultimately have is a family room your guests won’t want to leave and two exceptionally delighted clients left to enjoy sunset views over the bay.

Editor’s Note: Introducing one of our newest Haute Design members: Michael Miller of Centaur Interiors! Michael founded Centaur Interiors in 2010 as a firm specializing in turnkey solutions for high-end residential renovations. Based in Chicago, IL, Michael created a collaborative environment and network of industry experts including craftsmen, licensed tradesmen, architects, designers, and project managers, working in harmony to produce superior results. Centaur Interiors is redefining the art of building with their services including development, consulting, design-build, construction management, general contracting, interior architecture/design, furnishings, and art procurement.

What is your background and what made you want to pursue interior design?

I have a background in mechanical design and engineering. I did take some architecture classes as well, but never a degree. From an early age I was always sketching out my dream home, and even remodeling my parent’s house and bedroom when I was 12, so I knew I had a passion for design/aesthetics. Everywhere I go I consume design, architecture, and engineering in stores, restaurants, hotels, etc. It’s almost a part of my DNA to evaluate the design, what I like, or how I feel I can make this better. I use this for inspiration on our projects. It’s a lifestyle and rooted deep inside.

Why did you start Centaur Interiors?

I started CI as I found a large void in our industry for a single source conception to completion company. There was a standard architect-designer-GC model and it did not serve the client well. Nobody was ever on the same page and the client needed much more education to make informed decisions. At our firm, we are doing pricing within the design phase so the client is informed on the costs to make educated decisions. Within the last 5 years with my growing passion for art, we added an in-house gallery and also developed my digital art system Apollo which is launching in May. We are a true turnkey concept to completion firm specializing in high-end residential consulting + design + build + furnishings + artwork.

What makes Centaur different than other Interior Design firms?

Our process and relentless attention to detail. From the inception, we take our clients on a journey to understand their lifestyle and how they will interact with their homes. Through this, we understand their passions and style and can incorporate this within their designs. This process flows seamlessly into construction management and execution. Our team understands the focal points and the client’s priorities. We utilize technology to visually represent each aspect of the project for the client to make informed decisions. Within our design studios in Chicago & Dallas clients can see and experience several different finishes and details to learn what works well for them.

What is your mission as an interior designer?

To be the best at what we do. Our team is extremely vital in providing a high level of passion to each and every project. We are constantly learning new finishes & techniques and also levering new technologies to keep our firm cutting edge. The goal is to listen to the client to understand their needs and developing a program within our process that works well for them.

Why did you choose to base out of Chicago?

I was born and raised in Chicago and have a large passion for the city. We reside in the Museum Park Campus and our office & showroom are located within the Gallery District in River North. Chicago has a long-standing history with high-end architecture and many of the most prestigious designers & architects have made a mark on this city. We look forward to building on this and leaving a legacy. Our commitment to our clients has taken us to multiple cities in the US including Dallas & South Florida where we have current projects underway.

What kind of projects are on the horizon for the firm?

We perform a great deal of high-rise work and specialize in combining residences starting with an amazing space plan. Our boutique firm is growing and we look forward to taking on a more significant role in full concept to completion work. I feel clients are finding a great deal of value in this as we are able to assess and advise the clients throughout this process & journey. We are currently working on about 10 projects which are in the Gold Coast, River North, and Streeterville in Chicago, and a couple of projects in Miami, and one in Dallas. Anything that we can make an authentic stamp on for our clients. I could not be more excited about the launch of our digital art system Apollo. This is coupling high design with amazing proprietary technology & world-renowned artists. Stay tuned for this as we gear up for our launch.

HGTV’s Design Star was a popular tv show from 2006 - 2013 where contestants tackled different design challenges for a chance to win their own HGTV show. Now, HGTV and Discovery + have given the show new life and revived it as Design Star: Next Gen.

This reboot will feature 8 designers vying for the $50,000 cash prize and a shot at their own show. The head judge is renowned interior designer Jonathan Adler who is joined by designer Lauren Makk and a myriad of other celebrity guests throughout.

“Lots of designers and home renovators tell us they dream about having their own show on HGTV,” said Loren Ruch, group senior vice president, programming and development, HGTV. “For the ones selected to be on Design Star: NextGen, their lives are about to change in ways they can’t imagine. This series will provide a once-in-a-lifetime showcase for their talent and creativity. It will raise their national visibility, multiply their business opportunities and boost their status as social media influencers.”

The contestants include designers, renovators, and social media brand-builders including Haute Design Network’s own Chris Goddard of Goddard Design Group! Chris has over 25 years of design experience and is the principal designer of Goddard Design Group, based in Springdale, Arkansas.

“I have been asked why in the world an established designer would do this show," says Goddard. "And my answer is: Why not! I viewed it as a chance to push myself out of my comfort zone and reconnect with the reason I became a designer.”

The design challenges are meant to stretch the designers to their limits, and for them to create something that showcases their unique style and brand. The show is six episodes long, hosted by Allison Hoker Boss, as well as sponsored by Wayfair.

The show also filmed during the pandemic but created a unique way to keep everyone safe. The show built a community known as the Design Hub, which was "isolated and customized" and was the only location where the show was filmed. Each contestant had their own house design space which they redesigned every week to reflect the weekly challenge. There was also a design studio, construction space, and fully stocked furniture and styling warehouse provided by Wayfair.

The first episode premiered on February 24 and will be released weekly on Discovery +.

Returning to London for its 15th year, the London Design Festival is bringing some of the most innovative and creative design minds across art, sculpture, and furniture design to one location. Basically, this is where the world decides what the next cool thing you must have in your living room is going to be. In the past, its been a Tom Dixon chair, which 500 were given away to whoever could grab them fastest in Trafalgar Square. This year, it could be anything from pepper mills with an interesting handle, to eggs that open into bowls for the kitchen, the sofas repurposed from military parachutes. The world is their oyster for the designers on display September 16th to the 24th, and we’re waiting to hear. Be sure to check out these highly anticipated exhibits.

Villa Walala by Camilla Walala

This sculpture, a home, scaled down into a courtyard in Broadgate, features some eye-catching color schemes. It’s buzz about town already is creating a sense that while you may not build one for the kids out back to play in, the visual stimulus and color explosion so popular in the sculpture is about to be a big part of color schemes in your home styling.

Chromatic Sequences by Helena Jongerius

This Dutch designer blends soft softer pallets with ceramics and minimalist materials to create décor objects that feel organic in more minimalist, modern homes.

Beautality

The cross-section of function and beauty, this group of Brazillian artists and designers creates home furnishings that feel welcomed in any design. A modern approach to useable features in the home, each work feels lived in and charactered.

Heal’s AW17 Collection Launch

In collaboration firm Jestico and Wiles, Heals will be launching their AW17 collection at their outpost in Tottenham Court Road. The highlights of the new collection are the opulent color pallete and finer, scandanavian textures. The balance creaetes unique textures that help bring to life a room caught in the mundane routine of sleek, clean lines of modern design.

John Hogan at the USA Guest Pavillion

From the American perspective, John Hogan is coming to the forefront, continuing the trend of alternatives materials and clean lines. This trend’s growing appeal is rooted in its ability to blend well into any design with neutral tones, in materials and shapes that are anything but.

Buying a mattress can be a daunting experience. There are about fifty thousand different kinds and they all look alike—white, ribbing on the top, maybe coils, maybe memory-foam. With cars, its so much easier. I know a Tesla has more engineering and technology in it than a 1981 Gremlin does. That’s just a fact. What is there was a mattress that existed on those same principles? Enter the DreamCloud.

This mattress has the plush feeling of a warm hug, like tea on a rainy day, like not remembering if you need milk when you’re at the supermarket, and getting home to find just enough left. It’s so restorative and calming after a long day, there’s a chance it’ll do your taxes if you asked it to.

Yes, the DreamCloud has a lot of science behind it. Plenty of mattresses offer a bullet-pointed list on the tag of the tech that goes into sleeping. It would be simple to talk about the DreamCloud’s gel-infused memory foam, or patent-pending “best rest” coils. That’s not what makes it the best mattress though. This is a mattress built for luxury lifestyle. From the cashmere top, to the tufted pillow-like upper layer, it’s a mattress that lives by and for those who prioritize comfort.

Unlike most mattresses though, it’s a cost effective price for the level of luxury. Ranging from $1,075 for the full size to $1,499 for the California King, it’s a mattress that’s actually worth the money and that will last a lifetime. Yes, the purchase does come with a 1-year free trial, but if you need to return this mattress I’d assume its only because you refused to get up and go to work in the morning, choosing to stay in bed more. Hell, the company is so sure you’ll love this mattress, they’ve added handles to the sides so you can take it with you wherever you want a quick nap.

With current trends leading to classic looks, made from new materials, how do we pick the ultimate look while getting the best value to achieve timeless elegance? Chicago designer Suzanne Lovell explains.

What will the color palette be for 2013, and will you go with that trend?

Timeless elegance is always subtly inclusive of trend. A warmer, more embracing color palette will merge with the classic white, fresh and clean, as everyone seems to be looking for long term value and timelessness.

What materials will be making their debut in 2013, and what if anything will be coming back after a long hiatus?

Concrete as flooring tiles are back with many colors being shared by Waterworks. Lots of printed textiles are coming to the market as well. It's fun to see pattern really taking the stage again!

What design concepts from last year should be left alone for a while?

Bright Dramatic Colors that look good in magazines and on-line, but offer little "PEACE-fullness" to live with on a daily basis.

Given the opportunity, what risks would you like to take this year to further the concepts of design?

I am very interested in what is happening with e-commerce and the world of home. Pinterest is alive and very exciting with ideas shared endlessly. I actually look forward to curating products on-line, and ultimately offering my own signature collections as well.

If you could redesign one of your favorite places, other than your home or office, where is it, and what would you do with it?

One of my favorite spaces is a penthouse I saw recently in the Trump Tower Chicago. I would open all of the spaces with Hopes Doors and create a contemporary, clean, yet warm environment with a large, old piece of Italian terrazzo floor. One might be reminded of the classic old Italian stone house with the contemporary Bultaup Kitchen insert. With high ceilings and beautiful fine art on the walls, the space will become warm and inviting with many a "favorite spot" for reading and just absorbing the magnificent views.

Following a big year in 2012, 2013 is looking even more prosperous and bright for Kimberly Rider and her firm Kimberly Rider Interiors.

What do you see as your property’s greatest success in 2012?

Full-dress Design and Decoration of San Anselmo Family Home, Opening of ipanema spa, Opening of pelo fitness, creation of design concept for the Gorgeous and Green annual fundraiser for Global Green http://www.globalgreen.org/

What do you see as some of the biggest opportunities in the coming year ahead?

Increased Custom Fabrication In-House for Residential Clients and Elevation of Branded Spaces for Commercial Clients.

What changing market aspects will have the greatest impact on the way you conduct business in 2013?

Sustainable Custom Printing Techniques and Hand-made options for Wallpaper, Eco-Certified Specialty Wood Veneers for Wallpaper and Furniture, New Luxurious Textiles in Amazing colors and patterns.

What is it about your firm that sets you apart from the rest?

My philosophy of Integrated, Emotional and Cohesive Design Plans that carry intention and meaning. We work exhaustively to support our clients' individual styles and needs.

What are the most important questions a client should ask themselves before selecting an designer in your market?

Clients should know themselves and their working style and ask, "How do I want this process of transformation to go?", "Will I be a collaborator, a leader, a partner?" The design process is unique for every designer and the working style can determine whether or not the experience and end result is what you want. Just be honest about your priorities, budget, likes and dislikes and again--"how do you want to work together with your designer?" A good fit is about an open and communicative working style that allows people to adjust and foster creativity and discourse. It should also be really fun!
