Leslie Saul founded Leslie Saul & Associates (LS&A), an Architecture and Interior Design firm almost 30 years ago with the following mission: to make the world a better place for people who work, play, age, live and learn.

Lesli Saul's wealth of experience and knowledge has led to countless success stories and satisfied customers. One of the more exciting of these stories is LS&A's continued and growing partnership with high-end French furniture company, Roche Bobois. The esteemed French company has been collaborating with LS&A for over 16 years now. Leslie Saul took the time to explain this successful and exciting ongoing design partnership in further detail.

"LS&A architecture and interiors started working with the French furniture company, Roche Bobois, over 16 years ago in 2005. Since then, we have been the project architect for five stores for the creative, high-quality firm that is based in Paris. Our most recent store, the new location for Boston, in Back Bay, is almost complete. We can’t wait for the opening in the next few weeks. In the meantime, enjoy the photographs of the store in Natick, MA. This exciting store was designed in Paris and interpreted and developed by us.

"One of the great pleasures of working with Roche Bobois, besides the terrific Regional Director, Pierre Berardo, is that our residential clients can take advantage of our knowledge of the products, the salespeople, and the good-value pricing. I also love that the stores are projects that are open to the public, as opposed to our design work for private homes, which remain private (as they should). Retail design is fun and for the public! Bienvenue à tous!"

With the lingering consequences of a persistent global pandemic, one of the more prevalent issues keeping most of the businesses around the world from "normal" operation continues to be supply chain interference. Many have felt the impact of supply chain malfunctions to some extent. Whether it be a shortage of toilet paper or lengthy delays in delivery of online purchases. However, one of the industries particularly affected by supply chain shortages has been interior design. Materials, equipment and furniture have all been extremely backed up, leading to projects lasting much longer than normally anticipated. So, when Sensi Casa explained their furniture rental services to Haute Design, you can imagine the strong impression it made.

Sensi Casa is a home staging and interior design firm based in Miami. Through their Presto Design service, they offer unique and fully original proposals, but in an extremely faster time frame. They take care of everything, down to the linens and bedsheets, so a client only has to walk through the door and enjoy their new home. Chiara Sensi-Contugi, founder of Sensi Casa, shed some light on her firm's Pronto Stay services as well as their other furniture rental options which virtually solve any supply chain issues the average design firm would face.

While Sensi Casa's Pronto Stay service was originally introduced before the pandemic, the consequences of COVID-19 made this a particularly attractive option for clients. The Sensi Casa team noticed the vast influx of people moving down to South Florida would all run into the same problem: they would not be able to furnish their newly-rented or purchased residences quickly enough due to supply chain malfunctions. Fortunately for them, Sensi Casa operates a widely successful home staging operation and as a result, have access to an eclectic catalogue of their very own furniture.

The Miami-based design firm realized they could rent these pieces to clients. Considering how uncertain the pandemic has left many peoples' working conditions (remote or otherwise), most clients were not looking to make huge investments in furniture if they were to return up North, for example, in the next six months. This is where the genius of the Pronto Stay service comes in.

Not only can Sensi Casa clients rent their furniture, but they can rent their entire interior design by one of the most highly-acclaimed design firms in the country. With Pronto Stay, Sensi Casa still interviews clients, similarly to any other interior design service they offer. Furniture and design are provided based on the client's corresponding needs and lifestyles. The only difference is that clients rent their furniture, rather than owning the furniture.

It is important to note that because Sensi Casa offers high-investment pieces and exclusively branded furniture, they do not offer short-term rentals. Short-term, in this case, would mean anything less than six months. That said, there is no maximum amount placed on a furniture's lease. Client need only to sign a security deposit and they're set.

Additionally, clients do have a buy-in option, should they change their minds and settle into what they previously thought would be a temporary situation.

With the malfunctions present in the supply chain worldwide, no one knows for certain when these issues will be fixed. However, one thing you can count on is that Sensi Casa provides extremely practical and efficient turnkey solutions despite these uncertain times.

Sensi Casa’s mission is to assist clients with achieving a high-end aesthetic through detail-oriented curation that fills a space with luxurious furniture and accessories. Founder of Sensi Casa, Chiara Sensi-Contugi focuses on creating spaces that are not only aesthetically beautiful but work on a practical level as well. She relates to her clients on a personal level, easily adapting and refining her approach to meet specific client needs and deliver turnkey properties in record time.

Chiara recently sat down with Haute Design to explain Sensi Casa's visionary service.

Haute Design: Would you mind explaining what Sensi Casa's Pronto Stay Service is?

Chiara Sensi-Contugi: We introduced the Pronto Stay Service a couple of years ago, so this is one of the newest services we offer to clients. However, due to the COVID pandemic and the trends we began noticing as a direct consequence of the pandemic, the Pronto Stay Service became an extremely popular option for clients.

What started happening was, like many people across the country, clients started moving down to South Florida during the pandemic. However, once they would buy or rent properties, they realized they needed to get furniture for these properties. So they would reach out to us for our interior design services and come to find that, due to the lack of furniture across the globe, they would have to wait months to have the ideal piece they were looking for.

But because we also have our home staging service, we own an extensive catalogue of furniture, ourselves. So we realized we could offer these pieces to our clients to rent out during their stay in South Florida.

Clients loved the idea of basically leasing their furniture, rather than buying it. During that time, a lot of people did not know how long they would be in Miami. Would this a permanent decision? One year? Two years? With the Pronto Stay Service, clients do not have to invest in a fully furnished house or property, when they run the risk of having to move all over again in a matter of one or two years.

So we began offering this option to clients and we still offer the interior design of the house based on the clients' needs. With Pronto Stay, we still interview the client, just like any other interior design service we offer. We ask them about their way of life and their needs. Whatever they need, we provide them with the corresponding furniture. The only difference being that they rent the furniture rather than owning it.

Of course, this service has the limitation that the pieces we offer are based off our inventory. Clients looking to have one-of-a-kind pieces or eclectic designs throughout their home, might not want to choose the Pronto Stay Service. However, we have adapted the decisions we make when purchasing furniture to add to our inventory and we do offer a wide array of luxury pieces.

HD: Have you noticed a particular clientele that is attracted to the Pronto Stay Service?

CS: It varies. A lot of the clients are coming from other states, rather than locals. Mostly, it's folks coming from New York or Los Angeles, who were not sure how long they were going to remain in South Florida after moving down, temporarily or otherwise.

Younger clients have also been very attracted to the Pronto Stay Service because they are looking for alternatives that would not demand too much of them, financially. Whether they are moving to a new apartment or just starting to live on their own for the first time, they tend to not have enough money to afford a fully-furnished home. But when you give them the option to rent furniture and create a monthly spending plan, it becomes a much more attainable alternative for that age group.

HD: Are you aware of any service that comes close to offering what the Pronto Stay Service offers?

CS: I am pretty sure there were other companies renting furniture. But I am also confident that very few, if any companies, were actually designing a home around the client's needs in a furniture rental capacity.

Those who were offering furniture rentals were likely just offering whatever was available within their inventory but they were not actually executing any interior design. For better or for worse, we have seen a lot of competitors recently offer a very similar service to the Pronto Stay Service. Perhaps it's a good sign and it shows that we're doing something right when we see competitors imitating what we do and changing the name of the service.

HD: How do you see the Pronto Stay Service expanding in the future?

CS: Based on what we are seeing, it will be part of our service offering for a long time. I do not think it will be something that will be in high demand exclusively due to the current pandemic situation.

I would not go so far as to say that we discovered a niche market but I will say that we believe most people overlooked the option to rent the interior design service for one's home. By interior design, I do not want to come across as meaning just furniture. By interior design I mean, art, rugs, TVs, accessories, absolutely everything. We don't think it was on anyone's radar and it will be a service that is interesting for plenty of folks out there.

If you like to change your style frequently, this is an option that makes total sense. In the same way that someone would lease their car, we are offering the option to lease the interior of your home. Rather than purchasing furniture and then losing tons of money trying to sell it, because selling used furniture is simply not feasible, we hope to see clients take advantage of this option.

HD: Are there any limitations on the duration of time clients can rent out their respective furniture or designs?

CS: Because we provide high-investment pieces and exclusively branded furniture, we do not offer any short-term rentals, so nothing less than six months. We do request a security deposit in case anything may happen to any of our pieces. There is not maximum allotted time for the rentals or leases.

Another interesting feature to this service is that we offer a buy-in option. If you happen to change your mind and realize that this temporary move to Miami becomes a permanent one, we offer a buy-in option, which would end up being discounted because the client would have been renting the pieces initially, so they would simply pay off the rest of what is due from each respective piece.

Web store Billy for Sale has announced its second installment of rare archival furniture pieces from IKEA.

The first time the IKEA archive platform offered a collection, it sold out within one hour. The project reportedly formed after a five-year process of sourcing rare furniture items from the '80s and '90s, when the Swedish conglomerate first launched in the UK.

This second installment features an eclectic collection of playful, iconic pieces alongside some not-so-popular ones. The collection launched earlier this week via Billy For Sale's web platform, with prices starting around $92.

Noteworthy items within the collection include the 1994 VILBERT chair by Verner Panton, as well as the 1972 IMPALA lounge chair by Gilis Lundren.

After the second collection is sold, BILLY intends to provide archival stock on a more consistent basis, as well as producing original designs to compliment its available stock.

Christian Siriano, winner of season four of Project Runway, has pivoted from fashion to interior design by launching his debut furniture collection.

The 35-year-old designer partnered with e-commerce market place, 1st Dibs to offer an eclectic and impressive debut furniture collection. According to a report from L'Officiel, Siriano's collection includes sculptural stools, coffee tables, settees and everything in between.

Siriano first burst onto the scene when he became the youngest champion of Project Runway in 2007. Since then, he has gone onto design looks for Michelle Obama, Lady Gaga, Amy Adams, Angelina Jolie and more. He nearly broke the internet along with Billy Porter after the actor debuted an exclusive Siriano-designed look to the 2019 Oscars.

Redecorating your home can seem like a fun task at first, but people often find themselves lost, without knowing where to start. Decorating a space without a helping hand and some guidance can end up being an exhausting endeavor, leading you to expensive renovations and an unpleasant environment. We listed the top 5 tips from expert celebrity interior designers to guide you when decorating your space.

1- Less is More

Windsor Smith, who has had celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow as a client, reminds us that “less is more.” Most people believe that the way to create a stylish and sophisticated interior is to add as many items and details as you can. She recommends letting go of anything that feels excessive, that can be seen as clutter instead of a piece of the design. “Purge your home of anything that feels heavy - even clothing,” she adds.

2- Nature as an Inspiration

Kari Whitman, the television star who has worked on the homes of Hollywood icons such as Antonio Banderas and Jessica Alba, explains how she incorporates nature in her designs. She mentions how every encounter with nature can serve as inspiration for a design. "The other day I was eating oysters and I found the inner shell beautiful," she said.

3- Lighting not just from windows

Adam Rolston, of Incorporated Architecture & Design, points out that thinking that the only way to get a bright room is to paint a room white is a very common mistake, and it should be avoided. A better way to accomplish a bright and illuminated room is to keep the overall palette of the room light, as well as using mirrors to reflect natural light into your interiors.

4- Comfort Comes First

Brian Paquette, a Seattle-based celebrity designer, recommends putting comfort before aesthetics. When designing your home, there is always going to be that dream dining table or that beautiful couch you can't take your mind off it. However, if it is not functional in relation to your everyday needs, then it is not going to work in your design. He mentions how you should always focus on comfort and usage, like a real dining table you can spread out on and a comfy sofa rather than just a seat.

5- How to make a room seem larger

Jeff Andrews, who has worked on the homes of Kendall Jenner and Ryan Seacrest, gives a tip on how to make any room seem more spacious. The key is to use statement furniture, in other words, invest in larger pieces, and choose something that you like looking at. He also recommends keeping the color scheme simple and uniform. Varying textures and incorporating small amounts of prints make the space coordinated and larger.

When you are planning to decorate your home, there are factors at play that determine how you decorate. These include aesthetic taste, budget, and functionality. Long ago, interior design conventions were introduced and nowadays people have accepted them. However, just like any kind of art and fashion, interior design is always evolving and changing. These are some interior design myths that are outdated and should be deconstructed.

Small Room, Light Color

Who said that you need to paint a small room a light color? Many people have this idea that in order to trick yourself and your guests that a tiny room in your house is bigger, light color is the solution. This is not true, and actually, the opposite applies. A dark shade of paint may actually add depth to the walls and create the illusion of pushing the wall back, making the room feel larger.

Must have a theme?

The idea that every room must have a theme and be designed accordingly is also a design myth. Choosing furniture and decorations that match too much can make your home look monotonous and tedious. The key to success is to take some risks and mix things up, but with balance, of course. Bring in pieces in different styles, colors, and textures. That will certainly make your home more interesting.

To be trendy, or not to be trendy

Most people think that a decorating plan should include all the latest trends. That is not always true. When decorating your home, you should take time to define your style and preferences. If you love your 30-year-old grandmother’s couch, you should definitely include that in your plan and find a way to make it fit with the rest of the design.

Who needs an interior designer?

Another common misconception about interior design comes at the time of deciding if you need to hire an interior designer. Most people think that if you can do it yourself, why should you hire? The reality is that while you may have great ideas and tastes to decorate your home, there are some insights and advice that only a designer can give you. Interior designers help you with planning and anticipate problems that might come along the way, making you spend even less money with problems you might encounter without the expertise of a designer.

Design doesn't matter

It is also a myth that a properly designed interior is not necessary. The environments we inhabit have a lot of influence in our mood, how we feel, behave, and live. A functionally designed house will ensure that your daily routine operates just like you need it to. The right color palette on your walls can enhance your mood, and even prevent depression and anxiety. Our home is, for most, the place that we spend the most time at, so it is worth investing in a design that will make you feel happy and comfortable.

When decorating a space, the task of combining elements in one cohesive space can be intimidating. While there are no set rules for design, there are definitely guidelines that everyone should follow to achieve the desired product. From choosing lighting, furniture, art, objects, and paint colors, there are key considerations you should think about so that your space works as a practical and captivating design project. We listed 5 basic rules of interior design to guide you when remodeling your space.

1. Volume, Light, and Depth

When designing a new space, it is essential to focus on volume, light, and depth. While these elements can sound very abstract and difficult to manipulate, they can make a big difference when choosing pieces to design a space. Volume can be played with by choosing oversized windows and doors. Depth can be achieved with the right pieces of furniture, such as a small and low couch to draw attention to a large window. The lighting of a space highly depends on furniture choices as well. Light colors, such as glass, chrome, and marble, can move the light around the room.

2. Practicality and Flow

In any room, the space needs to make sense. The furniture needs to work together as a whole, and you need to consider things such as mobility in specific situations, for when you are home alone, with your family, or with guests. If you were having a dinner party, and there were a lot of people inside your kitchen, will your guests be able to easily get to the restroom? If you have children, will you be able to cook while keeping an eye on them? These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself so that you achieve practicality and flow in your space.

3. Planning is Key

For everything in life, having a well-done plan is the key to success. That is especially true for design. Before starting to purchase furniture, paints, and elements that are going to pull your design together, think about what it is that you want to achieve with your design. What do you want it to reflect? How do you want the space to work?

4. Include one Statement Piece

Every room needs a statement piece that will catch the eye of anyone walking by. Having a piece that will surprise and make an impact in your room is key for not only impressing your guests but making you feel good and inspired. A statement piece can be a piece of furniture in a bold color, a remarkable rug, or a work of art. Use your imagination and choose something that you felt a connection to the first moment you saw it.

5. Add Mirrors

Mirrors can transform any room from tedious and dull to exciting and interesting. This especially applies to small spaces. Mirrors add light and depth and can make a room look bigger, by expanding the space and reflecting views. Mirrors are practical and decorative at the same time, and a great addition to walls where you are not sure what to put on.

Remodeling or building a house or a workspace is not an easy task. Hiring the right people to help you is the key to making your vision become a reality. It is a common misconception to use the terms interior designer and interior decorator interchangeably. There are major differences that make each qualified for specific functions.

While designers create functional spaces within a building, decorators embellish the space with decorative pieces, such as furniture, rugs, and accessories.

An Interior decorator garnishes spaces that already exist by helping their clients make decisions about best fitting style, color palettes, furniture, art, and accessories. If your space does not require structural changes such as adding new walls and electrical wiring, then an interior decorator is the best fit for you. They are the correct choice if your space simply needs visual updates.

Unlike an interior decorator, an interior designer works with creating new interior spaces. A designer creates an appealing space and strategically studies how to create a functional and methodical environment to satisfy their clients’ needs. They use technology to carefully create virtual plans to work hand in hand with construction teams who carry out the design. If you want your space to be a reflection of your personality and style while also functioning in a way that corresponds to your lifestyle, then hiring a designer is the right fit for you.

When it comes to hiring a designer or a decorator, one of the main concerns is the cost. Contrary to what most think, hiring a designer can help you understand exactly where your money is going, as well as help you work your space with items that best fit your budget. You will indeed have an additional cost of a designer's fee, but you will avoid spending money on a piece of furniture that looked amazing in the store but did not fit your living room, or painting your walls five times because you cannot find the right color palette. A designer or decorator will not only benefit you financially but also save you time by using their experience and expertise to anticipate obstacles that might come up along the way.

Haute design has a wonderful network of interior designers who can help you make your space perfectly fitted for your lifestyle and your needs. You can find these top designers at https://dev.hauteresidence.com/designer/

Meet the new trending style which is taking over our Instagram pages with a flavor of its own. Combining originality and the space millennials felt the safest at is the concept behind the Grandmillenial decor style.

This unexpected style comeback, which was initiated by writer Emma Bazilian in a trend piece, brings homey and nostalgic pieces featuring ruffles, frilly pillows, white and blue china, skirts on furniture, drapery, and a lot of needlepoint.

The combination of furniture created from dark stained wood and abstract art creates a vintage with a modern look. Patterns are foremost when it comes to Grandmillenial decor, highlighting classic prints such as chintz, toile, and plaid.

In a time when being different and original is so valued, Millennials, which range from the mid-20s to late 30s, have favoritism with design trends that are considered by most old and outdated. Grandmillenials are trend-averse, and very attracted to entertaining, a major aspect of the decor style. The popularity of the trend was furthered thanks to shared images on social media displaying fancy dinner parties and exuberant tablescapes.

With the Grandmillenial decor style, there is the risk of making the space too cluttered, excessive, and too granny-like. The purpose of the decor style is to have an antique feel that is layered and classic at the same time. The thoughtful use of colors, patterns, and items is critical. The key to success with Grandmillenial style is to keep the color palette uniform, so the environment feels consistent and cozy instead of tumultuous. This granny-chic style shows off millennials' individuality while bringing them a sense of nostalgia.

Actress, singer, and dancer Ashley Tisdale announced her own interior design company Frenshe Interiors, which is named after her lifestyle blog Frenshe. Tisdale, 35, launched her company posting a picture via Instagram on February 24 of a kitchen she renovated with her father and contractor, Michael Tisdale.

“Welcome to my passion project! Over the years I’ve gotten to work with some amazing interior designers and learned a lot about myself in the process,” she captioned the post. “My dad and I have started to work together on projects for other clients and I can’t wait to share with you. This page will have my own work and also designs that inspire me.”

On March 4, Tisdale officially announced her company on her Frenshe blog titled “Introducing My New Passion Project: Frenche Interiors.” In the blog post, Tisdale goes into detail about her home renovation process, which unlocked her love for design.

“We were looking to move to our dream area over the last couple of years and when we got the chance we jumped at it even though the house was falling apart,” she wrote when describing bringing her house back to life.

The project began as a personal home renovation project, which turned into her new interior design business. The renovated home is located in Los Angeles’s Los Feliz neighborhood and was sold for $5.78 million.

Tisdale included before and after pictures of the property, so people can see how her vision came to life. Alongside her dad, Tisdale maintained the integrity of the home, while renovating much of the home including the roof, windows, and floors.

In February, Tisdale announced via Instagram that she took the Kelly Wearstler Masterclass. The masterclass is a 17-part course that takes aspiring designers through the world of interior design while perfecting their style through patterns, light, materials, architecture, and furniture.

For more information about Tisdale’s interior design jobs and accumulated knowledge visit Frenshe Interior’s Instagram.

Online luxury marketplace 1stDibs is partnering with the Female Design Council to create an innovative collection of design works by women during Women’s History Month. 1stDibs and the Female Design Council, FDC, are combing resources to help the women designers expand their networks.

Founder of the FDC Lora Appleton stated, “Support is a cornerstone of success, and Female Design Council is committed to elevating all female-identifying people in design.”

The two partnering companies plan to unveil women-created contemporary pieces. Participating featured designers include Elodie Blanchard, Keavy Murphree, and Sunshine Thacker, and more.

The materials used are to highlight the power and strength of women and to reflect on their struggles, whether it's family, work-life, or friends. Materials used for the designs range from textiles, raw materials, ceramics, to gold leaf.

For all 31 days of Women’s History Month, pieces of the collection are to be released. Design pieces include lighting, abstract sculptures, paintings, outdoor furniture, tables, and so much more. Each piece created is distinct, innovative, and unique to the designer.

It's out with the old and in with the new, as they say. Haute Design is listing the top 5 things that interior designers should leave in 2020.

#1 Having no home office

This one is pretty self-explanatory. In the wake of Coronavirus and everyone having to work from home, the necessity of a home office rose. Now, when designing a home, people should consider including a home office because you never know when a world-wide pandemic might hit again...

#2 Formal sitting rooms

Nobody uses a formal sitting room. Even celebrities on their Architectural Digest house tours talk about the fact that they never use their formal sitting room. In fact, tennis star Serena Williams turned hers into an art gallery instead. So, leave the formal rooms that no one uses in the past, and maybe bring back the conversation pits from the 70s instead?

#3 Wall Tapestries

Now, tapestries are typically hung by college students but that doesn't make them any less tacky. Do not hang a wall tapestry. Enough said.

#2 Shiplap/barn doors

Joanna Gaines did a darn good job at bringing back shiplap and the farmhouse aesthetic, but it's finally time to leave that world behind. Gone are the days where a barn door was the answer to a design problem, let's keep houses looking like houses and farms like farms, yes?

#1 Open floor plans

Open floor plans are another casualty of the pandemic. What at first seemed like a great idea became a living nightmare as we all had to eat, work, and live in the same space every day instead of in separate rooms. In tandem with #1, people are realizing that it's better to have dedicated spaces for each activity as it helps keep the days from becoming so monotonous.

What design trend do you think should be left in 2020?

Interior design company Eames Office announced today, via their Instagram, their newest collaboration with sneaker monolith, Reebok. Eames is a company that specializes in architectural and interior design, but they also do graphic design, art pieces, multimedia and film, textiles, toys, and furniture.

Eames Office is a company founded by Charles and Ray Eames. The husband and wife duo were both artists in their own right, him in architecture and her in painting and design. After their marriage in 1941, they put their creative ideas together and created a molded plywood chair that became known as “the chair of the century.” The company is run by the Eames’ descendants to this day and works with only two manufacturers: Herman Miller, Inc. and Vitra International.

So, their announcement of a collaboration with a brand such as Reebok is very exciting! The partnership is set to release something in Fall of ‘21, and though the item in question is still being kept under wraps, with two well-established companies such as Eames Office and Reebok, it is sure to be amazing.

Combining water views with your home is a winning hand. As far as views that always deliver, there is nothing as unique (and, let's face it, just a bit envious) as a body of water, whether it be an ocean, lake, or river, as one's landscape. Design your house in ways to prioritize the views! Furniture and decorations can enhance the already-wonderful vista of any waterway.

Ocean

This bedroom in a tropical setting takes full advantage of the beach and ocean beyond. The bed and accompanying ottomans are positioned to not obstruct each other's view; and, the plants bring nature indoors. The sunsets in the Malibu beachfront houses are pacific and can be enjoyed from every room in them. Keep reading below for how to engage water views from the other areas in your house.

Lake

Head out to the patio and place lounge chairs to enjoy the countryside. The redwood floor in this house gives the space a more rustic feel, but the hanging greenery softens it.

River

The River Thames in England serves as the scenery for the small dining table in this modern house. Notice the custom-built windows that open with barely any effort to get out of either chair next to it. The perfectly-selected mirror has the waves of the river in its design.

From Up High

An apartment is a bit farther from the water than a house, but that should not prevent the infusing of water themes. The beachy feel of this kitchen and living room comes from the colorful stool chairs and the oceanic tones found on the sofa and kitchen items.

By using them effectively, the strong contrast between the black and white tones in a space will give it equilibrium and style at the same time.

Splashes of color from greenery also help to accentuate the vibrant and chic mood.

Lighting fixtures can be the standout item in a black and white space. You may have a eye-catching item tucked away in a closet that will be the star of the room if placed correctly.

A small wood coffee table like below features great with the basic colors around the living room, leading to a look that feels both cozy and modern.

But as always, the plain look is one you cannot go wrong with at all. Anything you put in it will attract the eyes of your guests. And if you leave it as is, a cleaner look will not be found anywhere else. Remember, clean is always in style.

The texture of a palm frond or colorful volcanic strata on a hillside or canyon wall carved by millions of years of erosion never fails to inspire my design work. Nature is the absolute most powerful cue that I turn to every day. What I know for sure is that nature makes me feel good. In fact, many studies have found that our emotional connections with nature are predictive of our mental outlook and wellbeing. Studies have concluded that there is a unique connection between nature and happiness itself as noted by Florence Williams ‘Studies show that natural environments make us healthier, more creative, more empathetic, and more apt to engage with the world and with each other. Nature, as it turns out is good for civilization.’ Therefore, it makes perfect sense that the influence that nature has on design, in general, is substantial.

In my challenging childhood where I often felt lonely or invisible, I discovered that I had the power to shape a ‘feeling’ for myself within my environment. I know this is very personal, but it is the truth. It is because of this very fact that I chose to become an interior designer. I can regulate the ‘feeling’ of someone’s space, I think that is amazing and exciting! I love the creative aspect and the solving of a plethora of problems, challenges………. whatever you want to call them!

Our lives today in this era of fast-moving technology takes us away from nature. Constant connection to our ‘smart devices’ even thwarts our personal connections with each other. Undoubtedly you have made note of people in a restaurant absorbed with checking their e-mail or even being distracted by social media instead of having a meaningful conversation with their friend or loved one. I do not think that we can ever replace a hike in any natural space with natural elements in interior design because let’s face it not everyone can hike or ski or play every single day! By being thoughtful and deliberate with my design work I can bring a little bit of nature to every project and influence someone else’s wellbeing.

There are many ways as interior designers we can accomplish this intention. Some ways are by utilizing natural stone tile, pebbles, reclaimed wood elements, plant walls, botanical-inspired fabrics and wallcoverings, natural stone lamps consisting of real quartz crystalline bases, stone veneers on walls and so on. The ideas to nurture with the nature-inspired design are endless! At the end of the day, the key is to approach the design with careful consideration for the end user’s health and wellbeing whether it is a residential, commercial or health care application.

While it’s true that the architecture of a building is an extension of the person for whom it was designed, it is also rather limited in terms of the amount of personal expression it is allowed to show. Exterior architecture can only say so much. Interior architecture, on the other hand, is much more expressive of who and what your tastes are; it’s, indeed, an extension of your own personality.

Architect-designed furniture pieces are mini artworks in themselves that when viewed together, collectively transform a room into a work of art. A complex and carefully designed furniture piece tells not only a story about the architect, but the home owner as well.

Square Is In

For the past week and a half, the design world has taken over New York City. With over 400 different exhibitions, installations, trade shows, panels, product launches, open studios, across all five boroughs, NYCxDESIGN ends today, May 23rd with its biggest event, the high-end furniture show, ICFF.

ICFF is only open to the public for one day, Wednesday. With over 900 exhibitors from all over the world, ICFF is considered North America’s platform for global design. The exhibit is full of displaying contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, and kitchen and bath for residential and commercial interiors.

There are a dizzying amount of exhibits to visit and way too many to see in one day so we have highlighted a few standouts. At least this is a furniture show so you can claim to be trying out a sofa but instead just take a break to gather steam and keep going.

Mark Jupiter

Mark Jupiter’s custom-made furniture from reclaimed wood is not only beautiful, it is meaningful. Jupiter is a fourth generation NYC furniture designer and builder with a passion for bringing the furnishing dreams of his clients to life. Inspired by the craftsman of his family, from his great grandfather hammering out the original copper roofs of the city’s first skyscrapers, to the hand-carved furniture designed and built by his father, he is committed to continuing his family’s long standing tradition of building exquisite, handcrafted and one-of-a kind pieces designed to last generations. Jupiter says, “We are finding that people not only appreciate our designs and reasonable price points, but truly love the fact that they can have a completely custom piece of furniture made to fit their exact needs.”

With a showroom and shop in the heart of DUMBO Brooklyn, Jupiter’s award-winning custom designs are a special combination of refined elegance, repurposed industrial and sustainable sensibilities. Hand made right in the back of their studio, clients can not only view the many newly created pieces on the showroom floor but also peer behind the curtain into their work shop and see the fabrication process in motion.

An example of how cool Jupiter’s work is, he has a coffee table for sale called “Storm Tree Coffee Table.” It is made from a 500-year-old tree that was toppled after hurricane Irene in 2011 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He points out that elm is approaching extinction in this country due to the spread of the Dutch Elm disease making this an incredibly rare piece.

The Inside

Applying wallpaper was once known as the one thing that could end all marriages. Peel and stick wallpaper removes that threat. And, beautiful peel and stick wallpaper is appealing to many. Christiane Lemieux, an interiors entrepreneur who started The Inside after selling her first company to Wayfair, is a design expert and an influencer in her own right. The Inside is showing for the first time at ICFF and taking the opportunity to launch a new irreverent '80s-inspired peel and stick wallpaper called “Melio.”

As part of the Collective Concept, Allied Maker, a handcrafted lighting manufacturer and New York design studio, designed and constructed a series of three large totem luminaires from stone, glass and wood. Totems are historically sacred objects serving as an emblem for a tribe. The goal of the presentation is to create emblems to material and to honor the connection between makers and materials. The concept aligns with the company’s mission to craft products in the USA from outstanding natural materials.

As a very charming side story, the company was started by Ryden Rizzo in 2012 as a garage woodworking studio tucked away on the North Shore of Long Island. Lanette and Ryden were neighbors at the time and were introduced a year after Allied Maker began. The two instantly fell in love and became a dynamic creative force.

The elegant wood totem is made of black walnut and brass and retails for $7,500. The stunning alabaster totem, which highlights the translucency of the stone, retails for $35,000.

Lindsey Adelman lives and works in New York City. She specialized in lighting design since 1996 and founded her eponymous studio in 2006. Her studio has since grown into a 40 employees with a recent location opening in Los Angeles.

The lighting collections blend industry and nature. Adelman loves to be challenged and seduced by the immaterial substance of light and is obsessed with creating forms that maximize light's sensual effect and highlight emptiness. Her work has been exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Design Miami, Nilufar Gallery, and BDDW. For many years, the studio has embraced a philanthropic mission supporting the Robin Hood Foundation to fight poverty in New York City. Adelman credits much of the studio’s current success to this desire to make an impact.

With the London Design Festival in full swing, the various furniture showcases of new collection launches have revealed a big trend that’s sure to sweep through interior designer’s portfolios quickly: retro is officially back, and with a contemporary twist. While the sunken pit living rooms of the 60’s-70’s are not returning (we hope), the color schemes and shapes associated with furniture is definitely having a moment during the festival. Modern chic brands like Cassina, B&B Italia, and Heal’s have been making the most of the trend, with their new collections offering a wide range of colors and materials in their furniture.

Cassina has taken a wide range of creamy pastel colors and created a series of sofas and chairs with rounded edges to suit the trend. For a modern take, they’ve incorporated metal framework into the pieces, to offer a more compelling look that helps the piece blend into a room as a statement piece, and never feeling forced with its bold, but relaxed colors.

Heal’s offers a more traditional design in sofas and lighting, but hasn’t backed away from the trend of a big statement color sofa. With offerings in red and electric blue, their velvet-covered sofa in the new collection is worth basing the room around, with a texture and look that feels modern and fashionable, while still being the kind of piece you’re eager to get home from work and flop down onto. While Heal’s may be the least design heavy brand in this trend, they’ve mastered the balance between art and practicality in designing contemporary furniture for any home.

B&B Italia has launched a new collection, complete with their new showroom in London’s Brompton neighborhood. The collection doesn’t typically embrace the unique color choices the other have, but instead sticks to traditional, high-end options like leather and suede seating, with a few interesting chairs with a fur upholstery. Where the collections reaches back to an older design trend is in the shape and structure of each piece.

Several chairs feature big, swooping lines, bulbous cushions, and wraparound circular sectionals. While the designs are very bold, the leather collection is still a chic addition for a room’s look without seeming overkill. One of the most interesting pieces in the new line is the set of shelves, with different sized sections to help give a more curated, textured field for its contents.

Returning to London for its 15th year, the London Design Festival is bringing some of the most innovative and creative design minds across art, sculpture, and furniture design to one location. Basically, this is where the world decides what the next cool thing you must have in your living room is going to be. In the past, its been a Tom Dixon chair, which 500 were given away to whoever could grab them fastest in Trafalgar Square. This year, it could be anything from pepper mills with an interesting handle, to eggs that open into bowls for the kitchen, the sofas repurposed from military parachutes. The world is their oyster for the designers on display September 16th to the 24th, and we’re waiting to hear. Be sure to check out these highly anticipated exhibits.

Villa Walala by Camilla Walala

This sculpture, a home, scaled down into a courtyard in Broadgate, features some eye-catching color schemes. It’s buzz about town already is creating a sense that while you may not build one for the kids out back to play in, the visual stimulus and color explosion so popular in the sculpture is about to be a big part of color schemes in your home styling.

Chromatic Sequences by Helena Jongerius

This Dutch designer blends soft softer pallets with ceramics and minimalist materials to create décor objects that feel organic in more minimalist, modern homes.

Beautality

The cross-section of function and beauty, this group of Brazillian artists and designers creates home furnishings that feel welcomed in any design. A modern approach to useable features in the home, each work feels lived in and charactered.

Heal’s AW17 Collection Launch

In collaboration firm Jestico and Wiles, Heals will be launching their AW17 collection at their outpost in Tottenham Court Road. The highlights of the new collection are the opulent color pallete and finer, scandanavian textures. The balance creaetes unique textures that help bring to life a room caught in the mundane routine of sleek, clean lines of modern design.

John Hogan at the USA Guest Pavillion

From the American perspective, John Hogan is coming to the forefront, continuing the trend of alternatives materials and clean lines. This trend’s growing appeal is rooted in its ability to blend well into any design with neutral tones, in materials and shapes that are anything but.

When designing a house, you want it to be one-of-a-kind—one that will make the neighbors all envious. Turning a house into a home is not always easy. From picking the furniture to the soaps in the guest bathroom, each detail is important.

Details like doors and windows tend to be viewed as not as crucial, but if you live in places where there are priceless views, hurricanes, or snow storms, those aspects become very important. If you are truly making a property an investment, you want to utilize the best materials—materials that not only look good, but ones that you know are built to last.

When it comes to doors and windows, there's one company that is sure to provide high quality and taste for any luxurious home and property: Fleetwood Windows & Doors. Its latest door, the Series 4070-T, provides the perfect addition to any home.

For 56 years, Fleetwood has been manufacturing modern-style windows and doors for luxury homes. Thorough dedication to architectural integrity and meticulous refinement of "the little things" has distinctively positioned Fleetwood Windows & Doors as one of the top companies in the business. Not only has Fleetwood been doing this since 1961, it is also eco-friendly.

Knowing your home is providing a good impact on the environment is very rewarding. Fleetwood Windows & Doors is continuously making efforts to be "green friendly" and currently leads the fenestration market with the greenest multi-slide and sliding pocket doors in the United States. Its aluminum products are manufactured using recycled aluminum and glass, and are offered in inert coatings and finishes. To further promote global sensitivity, 100 percent of its aluminum scrap is recycled.

With true craftsmanship like theirs, it makes sense that the Series 4070-T is so remarkable. The Series 4070-T is the door every luxury-home needs if great views exist and indoor/outdoor living is desired. With the new A4 roller, manufactured with authentic precision in Switzerland, it operates amazingly. The door has been made with a flush track system where flooring can reach not only the edge of the tracks, but in between the tracks, too.

If you are worried about water or other weather damage, the 4070-T has you covered. A patent pending sub floor drain system is used to drain water from the flush floor tracks, which helps the door function even in wet conditions. The door comes in pocketing, multi-slide and corner arrangements.

No one likes investing tons of money into something that is going to cause a headache down the road because they took the cheap and easy route. When focusing on the little things, like windows, you want everything to look not only look luxurious, but be durable, as well. That is where Fleetwood Windows & Doors has you covered.

Who ever thought one could literally use salt to spice up a space?

For interior designer Samuel Amoia and sculptor Fernando Mastrangelo, the concept was a no-brainer.

Both successful artists in their own right, the creative pair have managed to add an exciting, new "flavor profile" to the luxe home décor scene with their recent launch of AMMA Studio, an avant-garde furniture line featuring an assortment of pieces crafted using highly intriguing materials, such as BB pellets and Himalayan rock salt.

"We were inspired by nature and geometry to create organic and modern forms out of innovative and natural materials that have never been contextualized before in furniture design,” Amoia reveals. Among the collection's innovative furnishings are drums fabricated out of the natural crystalline substance topped with cement, amorphous tables made out of ground coffee, and skeletal mirrors embellished with brilliant borax crystals.

AMMA Studio's organic amorphous tables

The two artists were first introduced to one another by Tali Jaffe—the executive editor of Cultured magazine—after she interviewed them separately for a feature story. She immediately recognized the blatant similarities in the two men’s design approaches and aesthetics, and eagerly suggested that they meet.

The crafters quickly hit it off and decided to collaborate on an organic-formed piece Amoia was looking to create for 1 Hotel & Homes, a brand dedicated to natural and simple living. Together they conceptualized a functional bar made of Himalayan rock salt and blue-dyed cement—an item that was featured in Amoia’s Elle Décor Showhouse during Art Basel.

Fernando Mastrangelo and Sam Amoia pose with AMMA's Himalayan rock salt and cement drums

Ultimately, the work’s incredible success prompted its makers to ponder the creation of a full collection of products. Their vision quickly became a reality with AMMA’s official launch last February, and the creative firm’s subsequent debut of over 30 pieces just three months later.

“It was a very fast, but natural evolution,” Mastrangelo confesses. “I love making the pieces—you never really know what you’re going to get... [the collection] is truly a perfect combination of both Sam’s aesthetic and mine.”

Fernando Mastrangelo in front of an AMMA borax crystal mirror and a black geode table; a Himalayan rock salt garden stool on his right, and an amorphous sand and cement table on his left

Though they speak the same design language, the two collaborators are fueled by separate motivations: while Amoia’s passion for interior design originated from his extensive international travel, Mastrangelo—who outlines his design philosophy in three points: content, form, and materials—is inspired by the pursuit of an aesthetic he can “feel,” but “often can’t describe in words.”

“A piece’s form must work in harmony with its concept, or else it will not be successful. It’s important to determine which materials are going to work best for the content and form of the piece, [so that they may] tie the entire work together conceptually and metaphorically, the sculptor explains. “When those three elements are fluid and balanced, there is perfect harmony in the work, and it becomes undeniable.”

AMMA coffee grounds table

The handsome duo have a slew of projects in the works, including a 12,000-square-foot ground-up construction along the beach in Miami, for which the Studio is crafting custom sand-cast walls using sand harvested directly from the client’s backyard. AMMA is also in the process of outfitting a restaurant and a hotel penthouse and gym in the Floridian city, plus a Central Park South pied-a-terre and a Fifth Avenue apartment in New York.

“The best part about it all is that this is just the beginning,” says Amoia. “We are constantly growing and evolving and creating, and there is much more to come.”

Photos courtesy of BFA

Today we're looking at a new collection inspired by the celeb-favorite destination of Saint-Barthélemy. Designer Andrianna Shamaris has captured the spirit of the French West Indies island in her St. Barts Collection, which features organic white wash and natural erosion teak furniture.

Each piece has not only a unique look, with pieces made from reclaimed teak in a natural, weathered condition, or carefully stained with white wash to evoke the look of pieces exposed to the sun, sea, and salt air of St. Barts. Each piece is unique, thanks to their "found" origin, with different grains, finishes and sizes. A beautiful quartz-crystal look is created by filling the grooves of the teak with cracked aqua resin.

Luxury furniture manufacturers Modernica's Alpine Series Bed is a simple way to incorporate a classic, luxury mid-century design into your home. Inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of vintage sporting equipment—the curves are reminiscent of wooden skis, giving the bed a classic design with fluid lines.

The bed was designed by Modernica’s co-founder Jay Novak and has received a design patent for its originality. Handcrafted in Los Angeles, CA, the bed has been designed to be broken down into eight parts and is structurally engineered so that each of the eight parts plays a role in the overall strength and stability of the bed frame.

The headboard is conveniently angled to provide support and comfort for those reading or watching television in bed. the curved rails at the foot of the bed ensure that the mattress remains securely in place. The entire bed, from headboard to legs, is made of twenty-two layers of laminated North American walnut hardwoods.

Modani’s new showroom on Westheimer Road displaying modern luxury fits right in the Houston modern scene at its Yorktown location. It officially opened to the public on Oct. 18.

To celebrate with other local industry professionals Modani held a VIP event to inaugurate the latest addition to the Yorktown neighborhood and unveil Over the Top interior and the latest furniture trends and industry partnership opportunities. It featured a special appearance by renowned Uptown Dance performing a contemporary and modern dance that brought the floor alive. American Society of Interior Designs (ASID), Remix Real Estate, Riverbend Country Club and Tribeca Insurance Agency all came together for a one night of mingling with special industry guests, design fashionistas and real estate leaders.

Modani Furniture launched 2007 in Miami by three French entrepreneurs, Nathan Cohen, Steven Athea, and Yonel Fellous. The trio has made headway in the modern furniture industry by bringing unique and eclectic collections from around the world to major U.S. cities with “Over the Top Design at Minimalist Prices.” This past year was positive for Modani as they were recently awarded the 2011 Bank of America Small Business of the Year Award and 2012 already looks to be a record year. For Modani, this is the first of three new showrooms to open in 2012. Soon to follow, new showrooms in: Houston and Chicago.
