For nearly 15 years, fresh, timeless designs and meticulous attention to detail have earned Los Angeles-based design firm, FORM Design Studio, a devoted clientele and a portfolio of innovative, commissioned spaces.

Joshua Rose & Rafi Kalichstein

Founders and Principals at FORM Design Studio, Joshua Rose and Rafi Kalichstein, recently sat down and spoke to Haute Design about their design philosophies and why they prefer to work in tandem rather than as sole proprietors.

Haute Design: What is your favorite part about working as a duo?

Joshua Rose: I think we get to the iterative process faster than a lot of other sole proprietors or single principal firms. Along with our team, if we do not all agree that a particular decision is the best option, we don't move forward. At the end of the day, once all of us are aligned on the same perspective, the results are that much stronger and our collective buy-in allows us, in many ways, to work more efficiently.

Rafi Kalichstein: It's important to note, as Josh mentioned, that we aren't a firm of two. We are two principal designers in a small team. That said, one of the things I think is most valuable in design is peer review. There's no architectural firm worth its salt that is going to issue a set of drawings without peer review, regardless of how high or low in the chain the person who drafted these drawings finds themselves.

I think we have a tremendous advantage because the peer review process is so engrained in our DNA. The intrinsic trust and understanding among our team allows us to deliver work at a level of quality that I think is hard to find.

Lastly, I would say there is a practical benefit inherent in the way we deal with projects and personalities. We have extra tools in our tool kit to manage clients' expectations, personalities, or whatever the case may be. If I am not reaching a client in a certain way, there is a chance that someone else in the team can. We rely heavily on each other.

HD: Josh, what do you feel is the most valuable skill set you bring to the table? What is Rafi's?

JR: The most valuable skill I bring, Rafi will probably say is the thing that drives him most crazy about me is that I'm really a do-er and I like to get things done and move on. I think I can cue things up really well and can get us to move the ball down the field efficiently. The creative is a given, you can't be a principal designer without having some sort of talent. But what I'm referring to is a more managerial high-level thinking.

Rafi's greatest skill set is that he is unbelievably detail-oriented. We're all detail-oriented to an extent but he's detail-oriented on so many different levels, not only on design and execution but also when collaborating with subcontractors, working with trades, and being cognizant of what the clients are going to be left with. He thinks on this really multi-dimensional level to make sure that every 'i' is dotted and every 't' is crossed, so that we can feel extremely confident in the work we deliver, which tempers my inclination to just keep moving. It is a constant dance between us.

At the end of the day, when you're dealing with millions of dollars, you have to be responsible and you need to feel comfortable with not just aesthetics but how people will live with your designs.

HD: Same question to you, Rafi.

RK: Josh has an incredible observational capacity. Not to mention his memory, on which I rely heavily. While I know I'll see all kinds of things, to know that there is someone who can see your blind spots, is unbelievable. There is a real freedom and joy in that.

I think tenacity is my best quality, which can also be a hindrance, as Josh points out. But my unwillingness to let go until we have gotten the best solution is really an asset. There's a yin and a yang to everything we do together.

HD: Each of you has separately unique design backgrounds. Rafi, what is the most valuable trait you have kept from your Feng-shui background?

RK: First, I'll broaden it to say that it's diagnostic skills and tools, as well as the ability to see the unseen. There are things that I just know in my bones, which comes from years of diagnosis.

HD: Josh, same question to you, regarding your time in visual FX.

JR: I think the strongest trait I have kept from that time is dealing with big personalities. I've been in very intense situations with some of the biggest film producers in the world. Navigating that in my 20's taught me so much, so I can certainly deal with clients and builders and intense deadlines.

HD: Where do either of you see FORM Design Studio in the next five to 10 years?

JR: I see us continuing to do what we're doing, which is delivering commissioned, beautiful, large-scale luxury projects. I think our product development channel will continue to grow as we add partners and collaborators. By then I think we'll definitely have fabric and wall coverings, and we'll have established a luxury high-end furniture presence as well.

RK: We would like it to grow our team a little bit, but there's a line past which we are not interested in traversing because of what we love about what we do. If you get too big, you become manager and project-getter, but you can't really get your hands dirty because there's no time. I don't think either of us is interested in just being managers. We will both always want to be deep in the worlds we design.

Additionally, Pedini's collaborations with esteemed design firm, mr Alex TATE and renowned interior designer, Carolina Freyre, truly left a mark on the industry and confirmed Pedini's status in the luxury design landscape.

"All of the hard-earned success we enjoyed last year only makes us all more motivated for all that is to come in 2022," said David Rousso Jr., Pedini Miami Vice President.

While 2id Interiors has stood out as one of Miami's premier luxury interior design companies, perhaps most are not acquainted with the 2id origin story. Co-Founder and Creative Director, Rafaela Simoes shares the beautiful origin of her amazing partnership with Laila Colvin.

Do you know those people whose parents went to school together and created a bond where it would make it inevitable for their children to become best friends? Eventually, those children grow up side by side and dream of becoming partners and building their own company when they get older.

Cool, isn't it? Well, guess what? That's not our story.

Our mothers did indeed know each other for many years. They went to school together in Brazil. However, we defied the odds and both our mothers' efforts to get us to meet one another and we did not instantly form a friendship. In fact, we never met each other while we lived in Brazil. Incredibly, our story only began once we both ended up moving to the U.S.

Laila realized we had both moved to Florida and her mother convinced her to give me a call. That was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. We immediately bonded over our similar backgrounds and our shared passion for interior design.

I believe we were meant to support each other here in the States and eventually work together, even though it was never in either of our plans. One of the magical things about life is that it is unpredictable. Because not only is she now one of my best friends, but she is my pattern in work and in life. We even got pregnant almost at the same time and now our kids have grown up together.

Working as a duo can be challenging, but for us it is a blessing. Since day one, we had similar visions for the business and every obstacle we have overcome since then has only made us better partners. We recognize our individual limitations and we respect what each other brings to the partnership.

Laila is more pragmatic, practical and rational. She is better with numbers and budgets, so she is the one who brings some sense when we are going too far and keeps us on track with finances. I am more emotional, intuitive, approachable (but not early in the morning, please) and outspoken.

Working as a pair allows us to share our tasks, while each of us specializes in areas we're best at and enjoy most. By sharing the labor, we can lighten the load. This allows us to take time off when needed, as we know there will always be a trusted person to hold down the fort and this has certainly had a positive impact in our personal lives.

2id Interiors

Another advantage of our partnership is that we have a multidisciplinary approach with our clients. We work in a way that allows them to not get confused with both of us. If Laila begins a conversation with a client, she will be the one that will continue assisting them in that manner in order to ensure clear communication. The same applies if I am the one to begin the conversation. This avoids confusion and clients always know who to speak with. That said, we always share and discuss key pieces of information for every project to make strategic decisions that are best for the business.

All of these processes ensure harmony and clear results. I believe that our skill sets combined is what makes up the 2id recipe for success, along with the amazing team that we have, not behind us, but rather working by side by side with us. This way, we create a stronger, more balanced, and happier workplace.

The story of how we became 2id Interiors

The name of the company was something we struggled with. It was difficult to think of a name that included both of us and that also sounded good. I previously had my own company, the RS ID, which stands for Rafaela Simoes Interior Design. Laila made its logo and I was so in love with the "id" component that when it came time to think of a name for our company, I was not giving up on it.

We brainstormed ideas to include our initials but nothing was working out. Eventually, Laila had the idea of adding the number 2, to "id," symbolizing two interior designers, as a provisional name, but of course, it ended up being our permanent name. It's simple and conveys the idea that we are two people in this amazing journey together.

Originally founded in 1998 in New York City, MS2 Design Studio, Inc. is a full-service design firm that specializes in high-end residential design. The firm specializes in custom built-in cabinetry, project management, unique wall, and floor coverings, innovative lighting systems, and custom furniture design, while always looking to the future for the newest materials yet still staying true to the classics. With a combined 30 years of design experience, you can be assured that MS2 Design Studio will help you create the home of your dreams.

MS2 Design Studio's Principal, Michael Scigliano, recently took the time to sit down with Haute Design to discuss a range of topics including lessons he has learned in the design industry and what he believes sets MS2 Design Studio apart.

Haute Design: What was your first experience in interior design? How did it go?

Michael Scigliano: My first job in interior design was with J. Robert Scott in NYC. I was the assistant to the showroom manager. I got the job offer after touring the D&D with a designer who befriended me and took the time to walk me through the building. I had no formal training, so to be offered a position with one of the top furniture designers was beyond what I could have hoped for.

That experience shaped the rest of my career and life. I learned about textiles, veneers, furniture construction, space planning, and how to combine colors, all from the best in the field. All of the top designers shopped at J. Robert Scott, so I got the chance to meet them and interact with them on their projects. The projects I was blessed to have worked on would always show up in publications and that was a very rewarding experience.

HD: What are three major lessons you've learned since then?

MS: The top three lessons I learned are:

You can be a talented designer but if you do not possess good people skills, your career will go nowhere. Most projects include two spouses who are building their dream home. Each with their own personality and approach to the design process. Not to mention the children, the architect, the contractor (and their subs), the A/V company, the pool and landscape designers. So, the majority of your day is making conversation and discussing design. If you are unable to convey your design and manage all the personal relationships that come along with making your design become reality, you will never make it in this field.

You are your brand. Your projects are an expression and an extension of your personal style and the way you live your life, is part of that expression. The places you travel, the people you surround yourself with, the way you treat your body and mind, the charities you support, etc., this all becomes part of your company's brand.

Lighting can make or break your project. The amount of lighting, the fixtures, the aperture, the temperature, the angle, all of this in unison can make a project shine (no pun intended). A talented lighting designer is a crucial part of any high-end project. Light can change the shape of a room, the mood it conveys and the overall experience.

HD: You design in both Miami and New York. What are the starkest differences in terms of designing in either city?

MS: The first major difference that comes to mind is scale. The scale in Florida is big. The homes are larger, the rooms are larger, common areas are larger, the land they sit on is larger. Everything is big. Even the larger homes in NYC tend to have smaller scale rooms, which leads to smaller scale furnishings.

That said, considering that Miami is NYC's unofficial sixth burrow, the aesthetic of our modern clientele is similar. They all tend to like edited, open spaces, with integrated features and a neutral palate. This combination brings to life a modern home which is interesting to be in and cozy enough to enjoy.

HD: Designers tend to say that the customer is always right and that they design for the client rather than for themselves. Would you say that part of your work subconsciously reflects who you are? If so, do you believe this to be the case with all designers?

MS: The comment I hear most when interviewing with a potential client is that the designer they worked with in the past, or previously interviewed with, did not listen to them. I hear this all the time. I've processed that comment and have tried to do my best to do the exact opposite for my clients. By the end of our time together, they need to be happy in their new home. I make this known to them from our initial interaction.

I do listen and I do my best to include as many of their ideas as possible. At the end of the day, it's an MS2 Design Studio project and it reflects my vision for the client but it also includes their personalities. Sometimes, this might be a personality the clients themselves did not know they possessed. That's the fun part of designing for a client that trusts the designer's judgement and experience. The client gets something that blows away their expectations.

Is the client always right? No. I have had ideas passed by me which I would never allow in an MS2 project. Part of being a design professional, is to teach your clients what works and what does not work. This knowledge was earned through decades of experience. A designer cannot expect their client to have the same knowledge as them, and therefore, when ideas which we know will not work are expressed to us, it is our job to explain why.

HD: What sets MS2 Design Studio apart from other design firms?

MS: Going back to the previous question, I would say that the biggest thing that sets MS2 Design Studio apart from other firms is that we truly listen to our clients. We are not pushing our own agenda. Yes, we want to design an amazing interior for each client and we want to express our vision (which we always do), but in doing so, we listen to our clients and we incorporate their ideas along with our design concept.

The partnership between Sensi Casa and EJ Architects was born from the active customer demand to have a complete service that provides design, furniture and decoration of luxury residences. Additionally, this partnership was driven by the need from both companies to offer services in which the client is accompanied throughout the process of creating their ideal residence.

EJ Architects is a studio whose common denominator in every project is a timeless, creative, personalized, and above all, functional style; always exceeding the customers' expectations with their results. The architecture and interior studio specializes in residential projects located mainly in exclusive residential areas and complexes in the main cities of Latin America. All their designs have a fundamental basis in the deep analysis of the users' needs and the space where the project is going to be built, in order to make the best and most accurate decisions. Keeping in mind as a guideline that the result must always reflect both the essence of the architecture studio as well as the client.

"It's a beautiful thing when a career and a passion come together," says Chiara Sensi-Contugi, founder of Sensi Casa. Chiara's distinct individuality and enthusiasm for her craft resonate in her design and have led to the success of her boutique design firm. Sensi Casa takes clients through the process, step by step, and ensures that they are just as excited about the project as the designers themselves.

EJ Architects and Sensi Casa create a perfect synergy, since each company assists the client in different stages of its home creation, which at the end of the day, are all equally important and must be connected so the final result is functional and optimal. In Latin America, EJ Architects will offer their clients the possibility to furnish their luxury homes with furniture not currently available to their corresponding local markets, but is innovative and exclusive. On the other hand, Sensi Casa will implement a complete service in Florida that begins with the architectural design and ends with the delivery of the finished, furnished and decorated residence. Both companies stand out in the market since they both comply with the highest quality and safety standards in each of their projects. This will undoubtedly make their merger remarkable.

Photo Credit: @YSV_Photo / Yara Virreira

Michele (Cozy) Salazar was born in Miami, Florida, daughter of Suzanne “Sissy” De Maria and Joseph De Maria. Her childhood nickname “Cozy” stuck, evoking the warmth and charm she exudes. "Cozy" eventually evolved into her burgeoning brand name.

Michele recently took the time to formally introduce herself and explain a bit of her design philosophy and what she envisions for the future of Cozy Salazar.

Haute Design: If you could describe your design style in three words, what would they be?

Michele Salazar: Traditional meets contemporary.

HD: When was the first moment you realized you wanted to become an interior designer?

MS: My mother says my birthday request was always to redo my bedroom growing up. We still have my "dream bedroom" I drew when I was about 10 years old!

HD: What would you consider to be the most crucial moment in the design process?

MS: I would say the important stages are:

Establishing your clients' wants and needs while managing their expectations.

Remaining organized throughout the duration of the project. Organization is vital to a successful outcome. In design, there are so many moving parts, so keeping everything tight and organized is the best way to avoid any unnecessary complications or misunderstandings.

Photo Credit: @YSV_Photo / Yara Virreira

HD: Describe your ideal relationship with a client.

MS: It's so important for me to connect with a client. My ideal relationship with my clients is one where they feel heard and understood, that way they know their wants and needs are my priority when working on their project. When a client knows you have their best interest at heart, they are more comfortable and as a result, more trusting of your vision. Trust is key! If the client doesn't trust you, they won't be willing to stretch out of their comfort zone, and that is where the magic happens!

HD: Which is your favorite space to design in a home? Why?

MS: Every room is so important. I suppose the kitchen or dining room. Both spaces bring people together and offer up a unique set of requirements. For example, a client with small children who wants a very formal dining room but needs practicality, or a couple with conflicting ideas for their kitchen (one spouse wants minimal design and the other, a chef's kitchen). Each special request offers up a fun challenge and allows us to stretch our creativity.

HD: What is your vision for the future of Cozy Salazar?

MS: I would love for our team to continue to grow. Every project is more exciting when there are multiple creative minds working together. It's always incredible to look over the progress of a project from our initial vision to the final. This is often due to collaboration and different perspectives. Additionally, it's important to me that we stay true to our style and edge. We are not 'one style fits all' here. We are constantly mixing looks and styles, which is what makes us unique.

Brittany Farinas, CEO and Creative Director of House of One, is an interior designer of residential and commercial spaces. With House of One, Brittany is setting out to revolutionize the South Florida interior design industry. House of One creates atmospheres that are both visually stimulating and experiential, while using carefully planned designs to fulfill functionality.

Brittany recently spoke to Haute Design about what she believes sets House of One apart from her competition.

Haute Design: What three words best describe the House of One aesthetic?

Brittany Farinas: Elegant, Tailored, Artistic.

HD: What is your first memory in which you realized you wanted to become a designer?

BF: I remember my first time walking through a multi-million-dollar home. I knew I had a passion and appreciation for interior design when I realized my eye could not settle on one single place. I was in awe at all the amazing finishes throughout the property.

HD: How crucial is the relationship between designer and client either before or during a project?

BF: The relationship between designer and client is special because it is both personal and professional. We are able to deliver great designs because we develop such great relationships with our clients and can understand their wants and needs on a deeper level. Communicating throughout the design process is extremely important to us . As the designer, it is our job to constantly reassure our clients that we are on the same team and aiming for the same end goals. We want our clients to feel included in the design process and encourage them to contribute their ideas and inspirations. There's nothing more rewarding than a well executed project where both parties are equally as proud of the results.

HD: What advice would you give prospective clients before selecting an interior designer?

BF: I think the most important qualities a client should look for in a designer is their ability to listen as well as their attention to detail. This will transpire not only through the design but also the design process, which we strive to make as enjoyable and smooth as possible for our clients.

HD: What sets House of One apart from other design firms?

BF: We view each design project as an exclusive art piece. That is where the name House of One comes from. Our specialty is creating bespoke pieces for our clients, which as a result, creates a one-of-a-kind atmospheres that express their unique personality and style.

HD: Whats is your vision for House of One in the near future?

BF: My vision for House of One is to continue to provide high-quality design services for our clients. We are currently discussing opportunities to diversify ourselves within the custom furniture space. I also see us taking on more commercial projects and possible multi-family projects in the future.

LEGO has recently unveiled that it will be paying homage to Seinfeld, the iconic 90's sitcom, with a buildable rendering of Jerry Seinfeld's apartment. The live studio audience set was a stage for the stand-up comic and was created via submission on LEGO's ideas platform.

All in all, this 1,326 piece set will provide the opportunity for fans to build a rendering using several components of Jerry's very recognizable home, including such distinct details as the memorable blue-green couch and kitchen with its microwave, oven, and personalized fridge.

Seinfeld is widely considered to be one of the most successful sitcoms ever. Running for a total of nine seasons from 1989 to 1998, the comedy was loosely based off the lives of co-creators Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David massed an enormous cult following.

The set will also include a variety of comical references across the show's 180 episodes. Expect to find five mini figures illustrating the show's main characters: Jerry Seinfeld, George Costanza, Cosmo Kramer, Elaine Benes, and Newman. Each character will be dressed out in their standard '90s outfits.

This impressive design submitted to LEGO's ideas platform by Brent Waller a fanatic of both LEGO and Seinfeld will be a first of its kind and will be available starting July 21 to LEGO VIP members and to the public on August 1. The complete set will be listed for $79.99 USD.

Though friendships are not transactional, and no kind act or favor can reimburse the genuine benevolence and care of a best friend, it feels wonderful to be appreciated and recognized for one’s true support, especially when the appreciation of a friend has the potential to completely transform and improve one’s home. For Kevin Hart and his personal trainer and close friend Ron Everline, commonly known as “Boss,” this is exactly the case. A heart-warming episode of HGTV’s acclaimed Celebrity IOU, available for streaming on discovery+ as of July 5th, celebrates Kevin Hart and Boss’ friendship as Hart works to renovate Boss’ property.

Beloved comedian, actor, and producer, Kevin Hart, can handle anything, and often does so with a smile on his face and by employing his well-known comedic genius, but even Hart finds himself sometimes needing the assistance of a professional and/or friend. After a life-altering and devastating car crash left Hart severely set-back and unable to walk, Boss was unequivocally encouraging, helpful, and involved through every step of Hart’s recovery process. Now, with his health and mobility back in check, and his heart fonder than ever toward Boss, Kevin Hart aims to demonstrate his profound appreciation for his selfless friend. Hart, in tandem with adept renovation and real estate professionals, Drew and Jonathan Scott, collaborate to remodel Boss’ deteriorating back-house into an upscale, exciting, and sleek retreat for the altruistic friend.

The newest episode of Celebrity IOU follows Hart and the Scott twins' journey to remodel Boss’ place and is full of opportunity for both laughter and tender moments. During the episode, Hart and the brothers redesign the back house’s kitchen and main areas to be reflective of Boss’s personal style and motivational mantras and even choose to include a barbershop area as a reference to how the good friends first met getting their hair cut back in 2003. The episode highlights Hart’s little-known flair and expertise for design, and of course, demonstrates Hart’s golden heart and infectious attitude.

Though the home design renovations, featuring a hidden bar, large stone kitchen island, and expansive entertainment-emphasizing living area serve as phenomenal touches, Hart’s words and motivations are what show his true gratitude for his friend. The personal stories and intentions move Boss, the Scott brothers, and fans alike, and serve to reveal both Boss and Hart’s character, and underscore the power of their friendship.

Watch Hart’s gratuitous renovation journey, Boss’ touching surprise, and find renovation design tips on HGTV’s Celebrity IOU on discovery+.

Awarded Best of Houzz 2020 & 2021, Sensi Casa isn’t like other design firms. Their elevated approach offers what only very few firms can: turnkey homes in record time. Sensi Casa’s mission is to assist clients in achieving a high-end aesthetic through detail-oriented curation that fills a space with luxurious furniture and accessories.

Principal Owner Diego Guarderas joined Haute Design for a conversation about Sensi Casa's company philosophies and what sets them apart.

Haute Design: What do you believe to be the most valuable service that Sensi Casa provides to its clients?

Diego Guarderas: In terms of interior design services, I would say that our Presto Design service is our most interesting offer because it is what makes us unique and sets us apart from other interior designers. With Presto Design, we are able to offer turnkey solutions and turnkey homes in record time. So, this is something quite interesting for many clients who are actually looking to move to other houses in a timely fashion. This way, the client does not have to go through the headache of visiting 10 to 15 stores and exploring numerous options just to pick out one sofa.

I would definitely say that the ability to offer a turnkey, fully furnished property in record time, within the client's budget, would be the most appealing service that we currently offer.

HD: Would you be able to explain how this Presto Design Service, which you do so well, came about?

DG: Well, as you know, we do home-staging as well. So, because of our staging experience, we have learned to move pretty fast while doing interior design projects. We are taking all of the know-how of staging properties but offering much more leeway to the customer.

Because when staging a house, the realtor or the broker or the developer does not have much of an opinion on what we do other than telling us what type of style they want. So it's not like we can ask them whether they like this chair or whether they prefer this table over another. They will simply tell us, "I want a modern look," or "I want an Italian look," etc. And, of course, we just follow their orders. However, when it comes to Presto Design we combine the speed of our work along with a detail-oriented and customer-collaborative approach. For example, would they prefer an easy-to-clean sofa because they have children in their home? Would they prefer a King or Queen-sized bed in the master bedroom? Would they like sectionals in the family room or are they okay with three-seaters?

We certainly ask a lot of questions throughout the process with our customers. We begin with presenting options for what we feel would look best in each room and go from there. We completely avoid what other companies do sometimes which is to present a showroom-look.

For example, there is a well-known furniture store in Miami that is probably the biggest home stager in the city right now. This store has been able to create a great brand and following, and people love their furniture. So of course, since they have their own inventory in each of their stores, it's pretty easy for them to furnish an entire home within a week because they own the inventory. So for them, it would be super simple to just pick a bed, a sofa, and armchair or what ever they have in stock. The downside to this, is that each home will look exactly like the one next door and exactly like their showroom in Aventura.

They have a great business model and it's a great solution for clients who may not care about their home's design as much. They have great-looking furniture but some clients prefer something unique and different even though that may normally take longer. That's where our ability to offer a unique look in record-time becomes very interesting.

HD: You mentioned your home staging experience. What would you say are three key factors that go into your thought process when staging a home?

DG: The first thing we do when we home stage a property is to ask the owner, developer, or realtor if they are facing problems while showing the house. If you're showing a property and every time, someone says, "I don't know about this bedroom, it looks pretty small." So then of course, we try to make that problem disappear. In this case, we could showcase the room with a king bed, two night stands, a credenza and a rug or another furniture that could make the room look bigger.

In other words, the problem is that empty rooms look smaller than rooms which are fully furnished. People can have a hard time imagining how they could all their possessions into that room.

The first thing we do is to ask the client if there is any area in which they would like us to devote more attention toward. This helps us ensure that the client's house is sold as quickly as possible, which is our main goal. Not only will we help you sell the property as quickly as possible, but we will be able to do so while applying beautiful design. This is what sets us apart from other home stagers.

We also try to mainly use branded furniture so that we match the properties we stage with the same quality of furniture. Often times, in these three, four, five-million-dollar- homes, are staged with furniture that does not match the property. So what happens is, they have only tried to fill the home's space, rather than enhancing the house to make the property look better. Of course, by doing so, you would make the property sell faster.

HD: Correct us if we're wrong, but do you find there is a misconception regarding your design approach? Because Sensi Casa turns projects around so quickly, one might imagine for you guys to overlook some of the details but that could not be further from the truth, correct?

DG: Exactly! We see Sensi Casa as a boutique firm. We have been growing and accepting more and more projects at the same time. That said, we would never overbook ourselves.

We prefer to schedule less projects because we are so detail-oriented. In fact, one of our other key offerings is how well we accessorize properties. We have even been hired by interior designers in the past just because they love how we accessorize homes. There have been instances where designers have done all the furnishing of a home but they will contract us to work exclusively on accessorizing.

What people may not notice is that it's often-times the accessories that place the cherry on top of the cake for a home. It's what makes the final touches so special, you know? The final rug or that final art piece is what gives that extra touch.

By the way, we do our own art in-house and of course we also partner with art galleries so we will hang pieces from well-known artists within our homes. However, most of the time, we use our own products and people have loved our art pieces so now we are growing our inventory in art pieces as well and clients are buying our art now, even though that was not the idea initially.

Because of all these varied services we offer, we are only adding more solutions in order to help our clients with better options for specific items. We have also begun our own Sensi Casa rug line. We are now providing bespoke rugs, hand-made in India. Customers can ask for any size they need and we offer custom sizes and, of course, all in record time (less than a month).

HD: Is this a service that is available right now, as we speak?

DG: Yes, it is available as we speak. We have an instagram account besides our original page (@sensicasadesign) that is called @sensicasa.

That is the account we are using to showcase are rugs of all different kinds of materials. We are not doing colorful rugs. We are more favorable to the organic look because that is what we have been doing the most. That said, we will still honor any request.

If a client chooses a very colorful rug, filled with lines or patterns, we will do it because it's a custom order. What you will most likely be seeing on that instagram page is more organic, natural or neutral colors. The same applies to our linens we are currently working on as well. We are no working on bed spreads, pillow covers, bed sets and throws. Currently, linen is very fun en vogue and clients are in love with a specific hotel-look, especially here in Miami.

So we get a lot of clients asking more and more for this linen look which we are now offering.

Founders and Creative Directors Rafaela Simoes and Laila Colvin have established Miami’s premiere luxury interior design company, 2id Interiors. Regarded for their relevant and skillful approach to design, 2id Interiors in Miami is an award-winning leading interior design firm servicing clients which are among today's well-known names in professional industries and entertainment, spanning across South Florida, the U.S., and around the world with projects in Canada, Europe, and Brazil.

The dynamic duo behind 2id Interiors sat down with Haute Design and spoke about an eclectic array of topics which covered subjects from collaboration in design to what inspires their work.

Haute Design: Both of you are from Brazil. Do you think part of the Brazilian culture or design criteria carries over into your work?

Rafaela Simoes: Yes. I think the use of wood and organic, essential materials are always present in our design and I think that really comes from the Brazilian style of design. The desire to use natural and organic textures, I think, is very Brazilian and we always apply that into our work.

But because we also cater to so many cultures here in Miami, not just the Brazilians, I think we have learned how to be very diverse. For example, we have Russian clients who like a bit more 'bling-bling,' Brazilian clients who are more 'Earth-y,' and love the use of wood, but then we also have German clients, who have a totally different taste.

We have so many different clients and you can see that in our portfolio because it's so eclectic. We don't only follow one trend or one style. We cater to different cultures, different clients, with different backgrounds, and I think that is definitely reflected throughout our portfolio.

HD: We would agree! You mentioned the use of natural elements within your design. Have you noticed a shift with clients in regard to requesting more environmentally-conscious materials and design principles?

RS: Yes, I think so. Not specifically ecologically conscious material, but definitely more design aspects geared toward nature, more blues and greens. We are doing a lot of green walls on the exteriors of homes, so I do feel that people want the outdoors reflected inside their homes a little bit more. That said, I wouldn't go as far as saying it would be ecologically-friendly thinking.

We do have clients who really want to go in an environmentally-conscious direction and make sure the materials are responsible, but that's rare. That does not happen much.

Rafaela Simoes

HD: That's interesting. Switching gears a bit, considering all the time most of us have spent indoors over the past year or more, do you think clients have reconsidered how much they value their interior living spaces and home design?

RS: We definitely felt that at the beginning of COVID. We were a little bit worried about what was going to happen, as everyone was. So, everyone was remaining indoors and trying to contact us for potential projects and we couldn't do construction. But clients were ready to improve their homes right away.

From the beginning of lockdown, clients wanted to change furniture or change the layout of their homes that we had recently worked on and make things more comfortable. The first thing we did, before lockdown was over - we were already sending proposals to existing clients and new clients . It seemed everyone was desperate to improve their homes because it was a new way of life. No one had ever stayed home for this long so it was an interesting shift in the way people lived.

Everyone wants a comfortable home and they always have. But now, this idea of a comfortable home is really at the top of the list for requests. The requests have definitely shifted toward a more cozy and inviting home because people are working from home, the kids are studying from home, so comfort is key.

HD: To that point, something that has been rightfully addressed often throughout the year has been mental health. Have you noticed this awareness of mental health affect the clients' requests?

RS: I totally think so. But with us, we always thought about that when we started in this business; using materials we love, natural materials, bringing nature inside, including wood and raw materials inside the home, which does not happen in Miami often.

I think the Miami style is very shiny and cold and not very home-y. It's glossed whites and a pearly kind of style. Which, in my opinion, is not the most mentally healthy because it's so cold rather than warm and cozy like one should want their home to be. We are always designing with that in mind. We totally think that the house can be chic and elegant but still include some nature in the home.

We want the home to be beautiful but still feel cozy and warm and I totally connect that to mental health. I think that having a home that is not so cold and stark is very important for mental health.

Laila Colvin

HD: If we had to ask you to name three main principles throughout your design, what would those be?

Laila Colvin: I think our main principle is definitely to design for the client. As Rafaela mentioned, we have clients from all over the world and our portfolio is so eclectic because of that. I don't think we have a specific style. We do have some things that are always present, but we really try to embrace the client's dream home.

We really try to follow their vision and try to put that together for the client. If the style is more traditional, we will keep things more traditional for that project. If the taste is very modern and contemporary, we embrace that. So, whatever dream the client brings to us, we try to really embrace that.

We are not designers that say, 'you know what, that's not my style, go find someone else.' We really love having been able to work on such a variety of projects because that is an asset when trying to satisfy the clients to create their home, not our home.

HL: So, would you say in this case the client can be regarded as a secret weapon within your design team?

LC: Yes, that would be a fun way to say it, yeah. We definitely listen to them. There are a lot of exchanges between us and the client so that we have a better understanding of their desires. I do not understand how other designers can have a style that is so specific. You know, some designers have a style that once you see the work, you know it's them right away.

I don't know how they do it! Because they either need the client to totally buy into their personal vision so the client agrees to everything they recommend, or they say no to a lot of clients. We cannot do that. We actually love the difference between our projects and clients.

Considered to be one of the most renowned designers in South Florida, Luciana Fragali continues to dazzle interior design enthusiasts with her attention and care for her clients' needs. She arrived at interior design instinctually. With a notable creative character, and a passion for unique and special objects, Luciana is always looking to implement treasures within her projects.

In 2005 she opened her Miami-based design firm Design Solutions. Since then, her work has been mainly focused on the development of private residential projects and professional spaces. Each of her unique projects and ideas is deeply rooted in a great relationship with the client. She believes this is the key point to create a unique residential design that will translate into someone's dream project. We had the chance to speak to the designer about her inspirations, creative process and aspirations.

Haute Residence: Tell us about the beginning of your journey in the design world. How did the love for product and interiors emerge?

Luciana Fragali: I strongly believe that I was born to be an architect/interior designer. While other kids my age were playing with dolls or running around in the playground, my favorite pastime was going to the mall where that was a unique store which sold children's furniture. This was my favorite place to spend my time. As I entered my teenage years, the antique fair near my home became my 'go-to' spot. I loved hunting for unique pieces, never knowing what I would discover. So, for me, there was never any other path. I was born for this field!

HR: How would you describe your signature style?

LF: The style theme is relative, since it's a mixture of your own design beliefs along with the customer's needs, and how to adapt both visions. We always seek to meet the demands of each client while giving guidelines to create a functional context where sobriety and elegance, along with choice of furniture, recreate refined atmospheres.

HR: We know every designer has their own inspiration source and vision for a determined project. Where do you search for your inspiration? Tell us a little bit more about your creative process.

LF: My sources of inspiration are multiple and appear naturally. They are born from the project itself, from the idiosyncrasies of the spaces, from the environment where the house is located and from the ideas fo the client. Our creative process begins by understanding the project. This requires listening, interpreting and molding what the client requires of you all while carrying your knowledge of every nuance of the design development.

HR: Describe a design project with your influence in three words.

LF: Four words: Elegant, sober, personal, functional.

HR: What about your clients? How do you think they would describe your ideas?

LF: First, make the result optimal. Second, make sure the solutions meet their expectations. And finally, let them sit in the house of their dreams.

HR: Do you think the relationship between the designer and client is a fundamental part of the creative process? Why?

LF: Yes, because it cannot work any other way. Even if the client has clear ideas, the project has to be modeled based off the evolution of the relationship with the designer. Ideally, this evolution will make the client internalize the concepts and feel more ownership toward the project.

HR: Do you think that the current pandemic situation has changed your relationship with your clients and your vision as an interior designer?

LF: Our vision as interior designers, our beliefs and the way we work does not change because we have lived through the pandemic. That said, our vision does change in terms of the emergence of new paradigms of the daily use of our private spaces. People are spending much more time in their homes and have needs that were previously external. Now we want to adapt the home to these kinds of requirements. Spending more time in our homes makes us think about how we can take advantage of our respective spaces and how we could adapt them to our specific needs.

HR: If you had to name the project of your career, which would it be and why?

LR: The best project is the one to come. That means we still have a passion for what we do.

HR: As a designer, how important is it to follow design trends that are established in the industry?

LR: It is relatively important. Market trends are ephemeral, impersonal, superfluous and almost out of touch with the customer and their stylistic tastes. Our trends have always aimed to seek timelessness, elegance, durability and quality in the finishes and solutions we provide.

HR: What about the future? Do you have some ideas for projects? What can we expect from your company?

LR: We plan to continue to seek excellence in the design and execution within our projects as well as in regard to how we collaborate with our clients. We aim to ensure that our service is the best possible.

HR: What is the secret to create the perfect project?

LR: Through experience, you learn to understand that establishing a trust-worthy relationship with those who depend on you with something as valuable and cherished as their home, is a fundamental part of the process. This is undoubtedly the facet of my job that I like the most. I place great value in client relationships and crediting them as an invaluable part of the design process. I strive to create friendships with my clients. Achieving a personal appreciation for each other benefits the design process tremendously. A successful project is one where we drastically exceed expectations. If we give the client exactly what they had in mind, we have failed.
The pandemic stricken world is much different than the world we knew before, and as we emerge on the other side we’ve all got some collective readjusting to do. The Covid19 pandemic influenced just about every aspect of our lives and will continue to exert its inescapable influence in the materializing post-pandemic climate. When the coronavirus drew us into our homes and away from our office spaces for just about a year, we were able to reflect on our needs and desires for an effective and welcoming office space; now, more than ever, we understand the importance of community and togetherness. Our needs for reintegration and adjustment, and for both public and private work areas, are validated through the cutting-edge “Club-Office” designs of the Swiss brand Vitra.

Vitra has revolutionized the office space by making the now-familiar experience of private, focused work available in the office whilst still introducing ample areas that encourage collaboration and employee connection. In a moment where we are all easing our way back into “in-person” life, Vitra has cultivated designs that make this transitional period into normalcy as seamless and harmonious as possible.

Vitra’s designs, by Edward Barber, Jay Osgerby, and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, are all about flexibility. They separate the office into three distinct areas and include ductile couch setups conducive for semi-private work, free-standing seating arrangements that exist to promote face-to-face conversation, and more closed-off individual work areas.

Vitra’s design has mastered the blend of privacy and maintenance of safety guidelines, with the excitement, collaboration, and engagement that should exist in a workplace. By replacing dreary office cubicles and sterile long-desk layouts with these welcoming and intentional workspace options, Vitra has helped us settle back into office life in a safe and exciting way.

Dirk Somers, founder of Belgian studio Bovenbouw Architectuur, created an entirely fictional city as his contribution to the Belgian Pavilion at this year's Venice Architecture Biennale.

The display is called Composite Presence and it is comprised of 50 models of projects recently completed throughout Brussels and Flanders, in northern Belgium. The models were completed by 45 separate architecture studios and are displayed at a 7:100 scale.

Visitors of this year's Venice Architecture Biennale will be able to walk among the models, which have been placed in miniature neighborhoods.

The display lends itself to an eclectic fictional city, as the models were selected among new buildings and refurbishments that represent visual themes common to the Flanders region.

The Belgian pavilion provides visitors with a surreal Architectural experience and also aims to underline the role that competitions play in urban design.

The Venice Architecture Biennale opened its doors on May 22nd and will be open until November 21st.

Interior designer Justina Blakeney has grown something of a cult following since she burst onto the scene back in 2009 with the founding of Jungalow. In the years following, Blakeney's blog became a lifestyle brand. This week, the Jungalow founder announced that she has officially teamed up with retail giant Target for a new home line called Opalhouse.

"I believe that good design increases the quality of life," said Blakeney, as she revealed the good news to her 502 thousand instagram followers. "This is an incredible milestone for me and my team, and working with Target to bring to life these nearly 300 pieces was truly a pleasure, an honor and just really, really fun."

The distinct boho flair for which Jungalow has gained so much fanfare is present throughout the Opalhouse home line. The first iteration of the Opalhouse Collection includes bedding, furniture, wall decor, bath products, wallpaper and more.

According to Blakeney, her debut collection with Target will be available at most store locations as of June 13th and on June 26th on Target.com.

For a preview of the entire collection, click here.

With clean lines and a monochromatic palette, this Hallandale Beach home steers away from formality warming its contemporary tones with soft textiles and rich wood.

Designed in a soft palette of grey and white with pops of vivid red, the living and dining spaces blend seamlessly together to define the great room. Porcelain tile flooring weeps through the main floor and connects to the outdoors. The plush, red-velvet “Mad King” armchair by famed designer Marcel Wanders catches the eye immediately.

Interior design company Eames Office announced today, via their Instagram, their newest collaboration with sneaker monolith, Reebok. Eames is a company that specializes in architectural and interior design, but they also do graphic design, art pieces, multimedia and film, textiles, toys, and furniture.

Eames Office is a company founded by Charles and Ray Eames. The husband and wife duo were both artists in their own right, him in architecture and her in painting and design. After their marriage in 1941, they put their creative ideas together and created a molded plywood chair that became known as “the chair of the century.” The company is run by the Eames’ descendants to this day and works with only two manufacturers: Herman Miller, Inc. and Vitra International.

So, their announcement of a collaboration with a brand such as Reebok is very exciting! The partnership is set to release something in Fall of ‘21, and though the item in question is still being kept under wraps, with two well-established companies such as Eames Office and Reebok, it is sure to be amazing.

In collaboration with SPRZ NY EAMES Collection, clothing retail giant Uniqlo is launching a new line of products with the team from Eames design in stores worldwide. The launch started in stores just last week with a range of products featuring Eames’ signature mid century modern design concepts and graphics, to graphic tees with the blueprints and specs of the Eames’ classic lounge chair.

Uniqlo has commanded the retail scene in recent years as the go-to destination for staples like white oxford shirts, to tan peacoats, to traditional options that seem refined, understated, and elegant. Their collaboration with Eames for this new line of products blends their simplicity in appearance with the matching quality of craftsmanship in a product, which Eames and Uniqlo both share. The SPRZ NY collection is part of an ongoing collaboration Uniqlo maintains with various brands and artists to incorporate other forms of art in their design. In a recent statement from Uniqlo, the company explained, “SPRZ NY (for "Surprise New York") is a global project where art and fashion meet, creating something magical. SPRZ NY items are inspired by famed and influential artists of our time and include specially designed products like T-shirts, outerwear, innerwear, and more. This season's Eames collection is part of UNIQLO's ongoing collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York under the SPRZ NY project.”

Eames famously came into its now iconic stature in design in the mid-20th century. A pioneer of the mid-century modern look of home interiors, Eames remains a stalwart of design and décor options with incredibly well crafted pieces that have recently come back into popularity as a retro-chic design tactic being used by more and more designers. With this collaboration with Uniqlo, the brands legacy will be reaching a new era of homeowners and designers in a younger, millennial crowd.
