The $50 million development will be completed by 2024

Coral Gables’ most active developer, MG Developer is about to break ground on its newest enclave, Gables Village, a 48-unit Seville-inspired residential community that will pay homage to George Merrick’s legacy and history in the form of shaded tree-lined streets, plazas, parks, and fountains. MG Developer’s CEO, Alirio Torrealba, plans to revive George Merrick’s original vision for this parcel of the City Beautiful in a classic, yet modern way.

Located at 535 Santander Avenue, the $50 million village will consist of duplexes, townhouses, and condominiums set throughout 17 lots, replacing the existing rental apartments bordered by Malaga Avenue, Santander Avenue, Segovia Street, and Hernando Street. Inspired by Merrick’s seven villages, Gables Village will be built in a Mediterranean Revival-style Architecture, designed by De La Guardia Victoria Architects & Urbanists, and bordered by gardens inspired by the alcoves in the Plaza de España.
Now in its planning stage, Gables Village will integrate gardens and courtyards throughout an entire block, with 50 percent of the site expected to include lush landscaping and hidden parking garages featuring an artistic component that complements the entire Coral Gables area. The assembly of the project pays homage to the city’s past while building for modern-day luxurious comforts.

“As our projects evolve and move through the planning and design phase, we remain committed to working closely with the City of Coral Gables to deliver communities that fall in line with the City’s aesthetic values, which are truly rich in historic and cultural traditions,” added Torrealba. “Furthermore, we create welcoming homes from the inside out, and places that people from the entire community can enjoy and appreciate.”

The development will include townhomes, duplexes, lofts, flats, and an archway with raised residences above ground level, creating a distinct welcoming feeling into the Gables Village enclave. Units will vary in style and sizes including, one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom townhomes that range size, from 1,750 sq. ft. to 3,100 sq. ft. The village will also boast recreational amenities, including a multipurpose room, a pool, and a Wellness Center for residents to enjoy. Construction for the project will start in 2022 and will be completed in 2024.

MG Developer, led by Alirio Torrealba, is the City’s most active residential developer having completed its newest project, Althea Row, which nearly sold out in less than 90 days. MG will soon wrap up its Biltmore Square community, as it completes Biltmore Row, the 10 exclusive townhomes featuring a total of 5,561 square feet each, with elaborate coralina-stoned entryways that trace back to the heritage of classical design elements found in Spanish colonial architecture.

NYCxDESIGN announced a new competition called IMPACTxDESIGN to transform New York City’s design scene. The program is in partnership with Caesarstone and the Design Trust for Public Space.

The IMPACTxDESIGN program calls all designers to show off their talents to further public engagement in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and downtown Manhattan. The new competition program aims to enhance public space and foster public engagement.

Design submissions are open until April 8. Design proposals must transform existing public places. The proposals should bring people together offering a place to slow down and appreciate the city’s beauty and fresh air. The designers must use Caesarstone’s quartz as their primary material.

The program will announce the two winning designers in May 2021. The winners will be awarded $10,000 each and the opportunity to work alongside NYCxDESIGN, Caesarstone, the Design Trust for Public Space, Dumbo Improvement District, and Downtown Alliance to install their designs. Not only that, the winning designers can make their mark in the city and gain exposure. The installations will be revealed this fall, before the NYCxDESIGN festival.

“Public space is one of New York’s most important assets. How we design, imagine and create these areas will impact New Yorkers for generations,” reported Executive Director of the Design Trust for Public Space Matthew Clarke.

“We are confident the program participants will create inspiring spaces with our beautiful and durable materials that will allow people to enjoy their surroundings and shared experiences,” Caesarstone Vice President of Marketing Elizabeth Margles explained.

The winning installations will remain in their location for at least one year.

NYCxDESIGN is a non-profit organization that organizes year-round activities to support and provide opportunities for New York City designers. Its mission is to help rebuild and re-energize the city as a design destination and creative center.

While living in tall city towers has its upsides, there’s always something to be said for the Normal Rockwell lifestyle of being curled up inside by the fireplace. Thanks to a new advancement though, developments are installing Hearth Cabinets more and more to remedy these needs.

HearthCabinet has created a “ventless fireplace”. An actual flame that requires no flume, gas, chimney, or even electricity, and without having to succumb to those twist on colored flames or, heaven forbid, the TV fireplace. The product works by burning through alcohol gel cartridges, similar to those of a Sterno under a chaffing dish. Each unit is single use and burn out rather than growing into too big a flame, meaning there’s no plume of smoke to fill the living room when shifting the logs. Each cartridge of the alcohol gel burns for about two to three hours and doesn’t need to be vented.
