Avant Gallery has officially launched Artmosphere — a bespoke interior design and fine art curatorial service. It is a platform for bespoke projects offering exceptional interior design services, selective sourcing of fine luxury furnishings and high-end lighting, inspirational décor and accessories, and world-class fine art, all fueled by Avant’s customers’ drive to live passionately.

The project started by decorating a $5.5 million residence at the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles. The project uses many exclusive works from artists represented by Avant Gallery and furnishings from a variety of sources including a collaborative line of Brazilian contemporary furniture called Joia by Uultis.

The Porsche Design Tower needs no introduction and is one of many luxury branded residences making its way to Miami. Known for having car elevators that connect to street level in the apartments, Avant began their artwork there with a Nick Veasey X-ray image of a Porsche and a BNS street art painting. The pieces were chosen to emphasize the identity of Porsche and the lifestyle of a sports car lover.

The garage opens into the living room which is designed for entertaining. The artwork includes pieces by young pop artist Skyler Grey (including a limited-edition rug), a Mickey Lagerfeld sculpture, a Pez painting, a sculpture by Josh Mayhem featuring KAWS, and Becky Rosa’s “Birkream.”

Artmosphere designed and curated each room in the residence with a bespoke approach, from the sensual calm in the bedrooms adorned with images by renowned photographers Tim Tadder and Guy le Baube, to the "Big Money '' wall sculpture by Paul Rousso juxtaposed with a Mandala tondo painting by Juan Restrepo, appropriately placed in the home office for inspiration underlined with equilibrium. Each mood was set to create a dialogue with mid-century-inspired furniture that speaks to the utilitarian aesthetics. Other notable works throughout the project include a gallery hall that features a signed limited-edition print of Frank Sinatra by Terry O’Neill, a Marcos Anziani oil on canvas, a suite of unique Chanel-inspired silk screens depicting Olive Oyl by Skyler Grey, and oil paintings by Daniel Adel.

The Young Companies, Inc (TYC INC.) is a bespoke luxury interior design and development firm based in both in Chicago, IL and Manhattan, NY.

Donté J. Young, founder and CEO of The Young Companies, shared how The Young Companies approaches Interior design.

Haute Design: What does your design firm do that no one else can imitate?

Donté J. Young: Two specific things come to mind. We're not just designers, we're design artists. I like to think we're the Picasso of designers. While I may not be known on that level (yet), my team and I are visionaries in a way that does not have us picking out multiple paints or floor samples for our clients. I envision it, then I bring it to life. Our design process is a bit unconventional but always memorable through the turnkey delivery. Matched with an infectious savant energy, it is something that cannot be duplicated or imitated.

HD: Describe The Young Companies' design philosophy in three words.

DJY: I'm not sure if I could do that in three words necessarily, but our mantra is, "Be bold, not basic."

HD: What has been the biggest lesson you learned since the launch of your design firm?

DJY: For me, the main thing has always been practical communication. There are so many layers to design - from architects, to general contractors, sub-contractors, vendors, employees, and the clients themselves, things can fall apart quickly if you do not have effective communication.

When my team and I went remote, we moved to a more robust project management system. It provided our clients with a real-time, 24-hour communication platform to ensure all lines of communication were effectively met. It has indeed been the foundation of our design-build firm.

HD: What is your favorite part of working in Chicago?

DJY: Chicago is somewhat of a full-circle moment for me as I lived here over a decade ago. It's an approachable city Mecca known worldwide for its beautiful architecture, world-class cuisine and phenomenal art scene. Combine all these things along with the beauty of the Midwest's people, and it makes for a fantastic place to call home as well as creating experiential home designs for many clients throughout the Chicagoland area. It is the foundation and birthplace of many greats; therefore, I am pleased to be based here amongst that inspiring energy.

HD: When did you realize you wanted to fully dive into the design industry? How was that?

DJY: My mother was an interior designer and art broker, so I was always around design from a young age. Initially, I studied structural engineering before shifting my studies to architecture. My career led me down many avenues - from being a real estate broker, resulting in a period within the world of marketing and public relations for various celebrities and entertainers. However, the one thing that remained constant was that I owned and designed luxury rental properties where people would ask who my designer was, not knowing it was me. After designing for friends 'just for fun' and getting burned out by the entertainment and public relations firm, I leaped full-time back into the development and design business, which has proven to be a fruitful and highly notable career path.

South American artist presents “The Dreamers” as an exclusive collection inspired by the effects of light through shades and color.

Fabio Mesa has been selected as the latest featured artist by the Aston Martin Residences Miami, as part of its Virtual Art Gallery series of exhibitions, that began in May this year.

The abstract visual artist was chosen to present his own collection for the development’s Virtual Art Gallery series of online exhibits, that will feature a new artist collection every two months as a 3D immersive experience on its website.

Starting today and running until November 15, Mesa’s exhibit, titled “The Dreamers” features more than 20 hand-picked pieces of art created as his own expression inspired by effects of light through shades and color -- recreating his own shapes and lines with a 'fusion' of his signature human crowds, perceived trough endless spaces. To celebrate the opening, Mesa has created an original piece to convey his own expression of the Aston Martin Residences that is being used for the development’s marketing and advertising campaign.

Fabio Mesa was born in the city of Medellin, Colombia, and frequently travels to other countries to participate in different exhibitions and to take part in collaborative workshops. From 2014 until today, Mesa has shown his work throughout North America, as well as in major cities that include Miami, New York City, Panama City, and Beijing. Mesa has developed his artistic technique of oil and acrylic on canvas, using delicate combinations of gray, silver, gold, black or white, accompanying them with the addition of one or more bright colors to create a vibrating effect and impact, making each work a unique experience. The artworks evolve into a deep intellectual approach towards the viewer, achieving an interactive visual effect. When there is light a vivid and intense color is presented also combined with deep shadows, conveyed in the unique painting created by Mesa for the Aston Martin Residences Miami.

Apollo is a platform that brings the art scene to a new generation.

The subscription-based app brings inside access to world-renowned artists and art collections. Apollo is disrupting the exclusive art scene by bringing stunning art to users’ fingertips.

“The traditional art scene has a problem,” says Thomas Pierce, Chief Marketing Officer at Apollo, remarking on the app’s intention. “New generations love art, but find their experience in the art world to be stuffy, outdated, or hard to reach; not to mention expensive and intimidating. Now, Apollo is making investing in fine art accessible by giving entry and expert guidance to novice art lovers and sophisticated collectors alike.”

Eric McClelland, Thomas Pierce, Mike Miller, Tyler Shields, Paul Barausky, Adam Alfia

Besides the app, the Apollo platform will include displays for housing digital NFT collections and a marketplace. Users will be granted the exclusive role of curator and will be able to search for new artists, create their own art playlists as well as test art pieces before they buy them in the Apollo marketplace.

Founder and CEO Michael Miller explains his approach to building the Apollo app and how it is so completely unique in the market.

"It's combining what I do for a living in bringing in the gallery and artist community to collaborate with the technology aspects. That's why I think it's so great and so well-rounded. There's just really nothing like it in the marketplace. There are similar platforms out there, but nothing like what we're doing."

Miller continues, "I think we just had a different process and vision in mind from day one. Others are just rushing to sell NFTs or digital art. But ours is a complete ecosystem. It's almost like a hybrid between the Apple ecosystem and the Spotify of fine art."

Bespoke Apollo Premier installation in Chicago penthouse duplex featuring Marcel van Luit

The team at Apollo believes that their platform will be a win-win for artists and art enthusiasts alike because the app will feature collections of fine art from new and established artists as well as exclusive behind-the-scenes content brought to users by the artists themselves. Thus, connecting artists to their audience, and vice-versa, in a way that has never been accomplished before.

"We have the app, which is really made for the mainstream to deliver fine art to the world. You can display it onto a 4k, smart-enabled device and be able to follow artists around the world. You will be granted access behind the scenes and see content and footage that will make you feel much closer to the artist than ever before. It will be a much more intimate experience," says Miller

The Apollo Art App officially launched in the iOS and Android store on June 1st, 2021. The first 1,000 users will get to enjoy the app for an entire month for free with code: FIRST1000.

When decorating a space, the task of combining elements in one cohesive space can be intimidating. While there are no set rules for design, there are definitely guidelines that everyone should follow to achieve the desired product. From choosing lighting, furniture, art, objects, and paint colors, there are key considerations you should think about so that your space works as a practical and captivating design project. We listed 5 basic rules of interior design to guide you when remodeling your space.

1. Volume, Light, and Depth

When designing a new space, it is essential to focus on volume, light, and depth. While these elements can sound very abstract and difficult to manipulate, they can make a big difference when choosing pieces to design a space. Volume can be played with by choosing oversized windows and doors. Depth can be achieved with the right pieces of furniture, such as a small and low couch to draw attention to a large window. The lighting of a space highly depends on furniture choices as well. Light colors, such as glass, chrome, and marble, can move the light around the room.

2. Practicality and Flow

In any room, the space needs to make sense. The furniture needs to work together as a whole, and you need to consider things such as mobility in specific situations, for when you are home alone, with your family, or with guests. If you were having a dinner party, and there were a lot of people inside your kitchen, will your guests be able to easily get to the restroom? If you have children, will you be able to cook while keeping an eye on them? These are the types of questions you need to ask yourself so that you achieve practicality and flow in your space.

3. Planning is Key

For everything in life, having a well-done plan is the key to success. That is especially true for design. Before starting to purchase furniture, paints, and elements that are going to pull your design together, think about what it is that you want to achieve with your design. What do you want it to reflect? How do you want the space to work?

4. Include one Statement Piece

Every room needs a statement piece that will catch the eye of anyone walking by. Having a piece that will surprise and make an impact in your room is key for not only impressing your guests but making you feel good and inspired. A statement piece can be a piece of furniture in a bold color, a remarkable rug, or a work of art. Use your imagination and choose something that you felt a connection to the first moment you saw it.

5. Add Mirrors

Mirrors can transform any room from tedious and dull to exciting and interesting. This especially applies to small spaces. Mirrors add light and depth and can make a room look bigger, by expanding the space and reflecting views. Mirrors are practical and decorative at the same time, and a great addition to walls where you are not sure what to put on.

Remodeling or building a house or a workspace is not an easy task. Hiring the right people to help you is the key to making your vision become a reality. It is a common misconception to use the terms interior designer and interior decorator interchangeably. There are major differences that make each qualified for specific functions.

While designers create functional spaces within a building, decorators embellish the space with decorative pieces, such as furniture, rugs, and accessories.

An Interior decorator garnishes spaces that already exist by helping their clients make decisions about best fitting style, color palettes, furniture, art, and accessories. If your space does not require structural changes such as adding new walls and electrical wiring, then an interior decorator is the best fit for you. They are the correct choice if your space simply needs visual updates.

Unlike an interior decorator, an interior designer works with creating new interior spaces. A designer creates an appealing space and strategically studies how to create a functional and methodical environment to satisfy their clients’ needs. They use technology to carefully create virtual plans to work hand in hand with construction teams who carry out the design. If you want your space to be a reflection of your personality and style while also functioning in a way that corresponds to your lifestyle, then hiring a designer is the right fit for you.

When it comes to hiring a designer or a decorator, one of the main concerns is the cost. Contrary to what most think, hiring a designer can help you understand exactly where your money is going, as well as help you work your space with items that best fit your budget. You will indeed have an additional cost of a designer's fee, but you will avoid spending money on a piece of furniture that looked amazing in the store but did not fit your living room, or painting your walls five times because you cannot find the right color palette. A designer or decorator will not only benefit you financially but also save you time by using their experience and expertise to anticipate obstacles that might come up along the way.

Haute design has a wonderful network of interior designers who can help you make your space perfectly fitted for your lifestyle and your needs. You can find these top designers at https://dev.hauteresidence.com/designer/

Minimalism in interior design is about clarity and a sense of zen, but all too often we get hung up on minimal texture and minimal color. The best spaces are the ones that take risks and in this living room, we dared to let a few knockout pieces stand for themselves. We grounded the space with natural elements while infusing a rich color palette with soft, luxurious texture.

This one-of-a-kind sofa was found in a warehouse buried under bolts of fabric and lovingly named, Giuseppe. Covered in a Ralph Lauren crushed velvet, its chesterfield style paired with mid-century modern legs is the epitome of luxe and sophistication. It softens the cold stone of the magnum fireplace yet stands strong on its own. No throw pillows necessary.

The unique tree sculpture next to the sofa was actually a fallen tree at one point that was stripped and charred and now repurposed as natural art, adding intrigue, texture, and warmth. The way it stands formidable and opposite the fireplace is an irony that deepens the character of the space.

We wanted textural window treatments, but for this application, we chose to think outside the box. Whenever you do something unexpected in interior design you breathe life into the space, giving it a pulse as this creates a sense of safety and desire. We cut thousands of strips of carpet binding and knotted them onto a galvanized pipe that acted as our curtain rod. The result is a stellar covering that filters the light and blends with the walls so naturally, you get the feeling you’re under a weeping willow tree. Pair that with the silk rug and oversized art and you are left with a calming, luxurious space evoking a personality all its own.

Online luxury marketplace 1stDibs is partnering with the Female Design Council to create an innovative collection of design works by women during Women’s History Month. 1stDibs and the Female Design Council, FDC, are combing resources to help the women designers expand their networks.

Founder of the FDC Lora Appleton stated, “Support is a cornerstone of success, and Female Design Council is committed to elevating all female-identifying people in design.”

The two partnering companies plan to unveil women-created contemporary pieces. Participating featured designers include Elodie Blanchard, Keavy Murphree, and Sunshine Thacker, and more.

The materials used are to highlight the power and strength of women and to reflect on their struggles, whether it's family, work-life, or friends. Materials used for the designs range from textiles, raw materials, ceramics, to gold leaf.

For all 31 days of Women’s History Month, pieces of the collection are to be released. Design pieces include lighting, abstract sculptures, paintings, outdoor furniture, tables, and so much more. Each piece created is distinct, innovative, and unique to the designer.

People can shop the design works by women on 1stDibs’ website where the pieces are up for purchase on a rolling basis. Shoppers can find the progressive pieces under ‘Female Design Council Furniture.’

Founded in 2001, 1stDibs is an e-commerce company that sells luxury furniture, fine art, and jewelry. Founded in 2016, the Female Design Council’s mission is to provide a strong professional community for all women in the design industry.

Interior design company Eames Office announced today, via their Instagram, their newest collaboration with sneaker monolith, Reebok. Eames is a company that specializes in architectural and interior design, but they also do graphic design, art pieces, multimedia and film, textiles, toys, and furniture.

Eames Office is a company founded by Charles and Ray Eames. The husband and wife duo were both artists in their own right, him in architecture and her in painting and design. After their marriage in 1941, they put their creative ideas together and created a molded plywood chair that became known as “the chair of the century.” The company is run by the Eames’ descendants to this day and works with only two manufacturers: Herman Miller, Inc. and Vitra International.

So, their announcement of a collaboration with a brand such as Reebok is very exciting! The partnership is set to release something in Fall of ‘21, and though the item in question is still being kept under wraps, with two well-established companies such as Eames Office and Reebok, it is sure to be amazing.

Just as Christie’s represents many of the world’s most extraordinary art, Christie’s International Real Estate represents many of the world’s most extraordinary properties. “It is always a pleasure to introduce luxury homebuyers who may not be current art collectors to Christie’s as well as introduce both new and seasoned art collectors to the world of luxury real estate,” says Scott Wasner, co-founder and executive vice president of Christie’s International Real Estate Seattle.

“Christie’s affiliated global luxury brands offer significant cross-marketing opportunities that provide greater exposure to a broader luxury clientele versus what traditional real estate companies offer,” explains Kendra Ratcliff, co-founder and COO for Christie’s International Real Estate Seattle. “Collaboration across the global Christie’s network opens up more opportunities to provide superior real estate advisory services to our clients.”

Photo Credit: Christie’s International Real Estate - Seattle

A condominium home at the Four Seasons Private Residence in Seattle, which sold for an impressive $9.5 million in October 2020, is a wonderful example of how Christie’s many facets work together as a seamless team. Wasner worked closely on the marketing and sale of this property with Ellanor Roberts Notides, Christie’s Auction House’s esteemed West Coast chairman, who oversees private art collections for high-profile clients.

Photo Credit: Christie’s International Real Estate - Seattle

The property was the home of the late Virginia Wright, a prominent philanthropist and significant art collector. “The joint marketing program between the auction house and our real estate brokerage created a buzz around the property and garnered attention from high-net-worth buyers worldwide,” says Wasner. “It was an unparalleled effort which led to a near record- breaking sale price. The Wright family was very pleased not only with the sale price of the home and how quickly it sold and closed but also with the extraordinary collaboration we had with the auction house.”

Photo Credit: Christie’s International Real Estate - Seattle

“Whether a client is based in Hong Kong and searching for a vacation home in the San Juan Islands or a local client is interested in a second home in Aspen, Jackson Hole or Palm Springs, our global relationships give us extraordinary access to exclusive properties,” remarks Wasner. “You’ll receive not only our team’s passionate expertise, discretion and exceptional client service, but you’ll have 255 years of Christie’s unparalleled reputation on your side.”

The year may be coming to an end but the art scene is just getting started with Nashville Design Week and Austin Design Week taking over the South's art and design scene during the month of November. Whether it is an art gallery, workshop, conference chat or networking you are interested in, these two design fairs are sure to exceed all your expectations.

Nashville Design Week

When: November 8th - November 15th, 2018

Nashville is more than just country music. Coined the country's Music City, Nashville's eclectic music, art, fashion and dining scene make this the ultimate destination for aficionados of all sorts. This November, the city is hosting its annual Nashville Design Week featuring local artists Alex Lockwood of Elephant Gallery and Jessica Cheatham of Salt Ceramics. The highly anticipated event will kickoff Tuesday, November 6th, with an intimate conversation between Manuel Seitlin and Liz Pape of Elizabeth Suzann. The week-long event will seamlessly blend art and design with Nashville as its backdrop.

Austin Design Week

When: November 5th - November 9th, 2018

There's more to Austin than meets the eye. The city's 3rd annual Design Week aims to highlight Austin's vibrant scene and creative community through free workshops, talks, studio tours and events. The event will highlight the impact social media has had on the art community through its "Be-Hind Doors" Instagram installation, redesigning public spaces for a more inclusive, collaborative learning environment, the future of the design industry, as well as other trending industry topics. Come out to celebrate Austin's eclectic community at this year's Design Week honoring local talent.

"Project Runway" co-host, Tim Gunn talks about his recent partnership with Command Brand, his appreciation for art and the inherent convergence of fashion and home decor.

While millions of "Project Runway" fans and style pundits may find it dominant, fashion forms only a single aspect of Tim Gunn's fervor for aesthetics. If fashion did not comprise his career, he would have delved into design, he says. The revered TV personality, however, has, for the longest, struck a balance between the two in his personal life, which unfolds in his distinctly elegant New York City apartment and involves regular trips to the Met.

Just recently, though, an opportunity emerged for Gunn to espouse home decor professionally. He teamed up with Command Brand, the maker of the adhesive picture-hanging strips, to translate his fashion aptitude to interior-design advice with a series of wall-decorating projects that require no nails. Last week, Gunn, Command and Gilt hosted the “From the Runway to the Hallway” pop-up shop, where fashion, art and decor intuitively coalesced.

Haute Residence caught up with Gunn to learn more about his partnership with Command, his appreciation for the arts and his decor tenets.

How did your partnership with Command Brand come to be?

I am approached by brands with some frequency. I am very, very, very particular about the decisions I make about which brands I would even want to work with. As a wonderful happenstance, I am a huge Command fan and I have used it forever. So, when they approached me, I said, "Good Heaven, you are all over my apartment. I would love to have a conversation about what we can do together."

I find that decision-making about interiors and decision-making about fashion have so many correlations. People are really afraid that they get paralyzed by the decisions they have to make and they do not know what to do. With Command, because it does not have to be a permanent place, you can move things around, you are not making that commitment that a nail in the wall makes. It means that you can play, you can try it as opposed to, "Oh, I am making a lifetime commitment to this particular painting or drawing or photograph being on this particular wall." Command is just completely and utterly liberating. It is interesting - as I first began to use them, it was about, "Well, let me experiment. Let me try." But then, because they are so long-lasting, there is no reason to take the Command strips down and put a nail. It is quite fantastic. I am involved because I am a huge fan of the product.

Is this your first venture into home decor?

Yes, absolutely. I have to say, in my heart, if I were not in fashion, I would be in interiors. I think in particular living in New York, our home environment is so important to us because it is our safe haven that it is accentuated, I think, even more here. So, we really care about coming home and feeling that we are in a place that we love.

Living in New York can often mean a compromise in square feet. How can interior design make the best of the available space?

I believe that decorating our homes follows the same principles that are important in getting our fashion right. It is not about the particulars of what you have. It is about the relationships among them. I say it is about silhouette, proportion and fit. With homes, scale is very important. I do not mean that you live in a tiny apartment that everything should be of a small scale but you need to look into the relationships among those objects. I always say, do not go to a store and buy a whole apartment full of furniture there and have it delivered to you. Start with one or two pieces and then let it grow. Feel the space. Think about what proportionately and also practically you need and want, and what will fit.

I believe that decorating our walls gives us another dimension to the living space but until the furniture is places, it is not a very good idea to do that because of the proportional relationships. That goes back to the fantastic partner we all have in Command, because it does give us that freedom of latitude and that agility and ability to make changes quickly and with no damage.

When it comes to art on the walls, what artists do you admire? Are there any contemporary ones you follow?

I studied art in the 1970s and art history. So, a lot of my personal taste is more into that. I would not say I am a huge fan of a lot of contemporary art that is happening right now, but Richard Diebenkorn, Josef Albers – they are so many artists of the 20th century whose work I truly love. In terms of my home, I am more of a classicist and most of what I have is more traditional. They are just images I like living with – a lot of portraits that are 18th- and 19th-century but very affordable. I care about things that have a history and a story.

What is your favorite piece of art?

My only trouble is that I have so many. If someone was to say, "Your apartment is on fire, you can only take one thing with you," I think I would rather stay and get burnt. I do not think I can run out with just one thing.

What trends in terms of decor and fashion you see converging and shaping up for the upcoming summer season?

We have four trends – and they are trends in fashion and trends in interiors as well. Stripes are big; glitter, glamour, shiny surfaces are very, very big. As are also surfaces that are textured. We are calling them trends, but they all have staying power. These are not things that are only relevant today. I am happy that they are prevalent but they will be with us forever. So, depending on your taste and point of view, there is something there for you.

Nothing takes your decor up a notch quite like fine art, and these days, one of the most popular ways to showcase your art collection is to create a statement gallery wall. A gallery wall is a space where you strategically place works of art, creating an eye-catching oasis of your personal taste. If a fine art collection isn't exactly your thing, family photography, cityscapes and framed prints can stand in, as can mirrors, wall-mounted plant baskets and sculpture. No matter what you plan to hang, it's important to style the area with colors, shapes, textures and sizes that complement each other. For inspiration, we've compiled five of the most artful, jaw-dropping gallery walls on Instagram.

This elegant yet eclectic gallery wall doesn't use bright colors to make its statement...

According to Douglas Elliman and Knight Frank’s Wealth Report released last week, art was the top-performing asset in 2017. With a 21% rise, art overtook recent front-runners wine and classic cars.

Two very different record-breaking paintings topped the art market and news.

Untitled by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold to the Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa for $110.5 million (Sotheby’s), setting a new record for an American artist.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi sold at Christie’s auction for $450 million. Despite the fact that some experts criticized its condition and others doubted its authenticity, it crushed the previous world record set by Picasso’s Women of Algiers in 2015 at $179 million.

Although those are extreme examples, the entire art market proved very strong, driven by post-war and contemporary art.

Wine, the 2016’s top-performing asset class, rose 11% in 2017, compared with 24% in 2016. It is now the second place asset class after art. Much of the demand for wine comes from Asia. Burgundy markets increased the most, at 16.5% though many wine regions were hit hard due to frost damage (some production down as much 70% in volume).

Classic cars, a consistently strong asset class, saw record-breaking sales. The top seller was a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1, raced by legendary Stirling Moss, at a RM Sotheby’s auction for $22.5 million. It was the most expensive British car ever sold. Some other notable sales were a 1995 McLaren F1 sold through Bonhams for $15.6 million and a 1959 Ferrari 250GT California Spider LWB that sold for $18 million.

In other asset classes, Hong Kong jeweler Chow Tai Fook paid $71.2 million for “the Pink Star,” a 59.6-carat vivid pink diamond. A a 1,000-year-old Ru guanyo ceramic brush-washing bowl sold for $40 million. And a rare set of four 16th- or 17th-century Chinese huanghuali folding chairs, sold for almost $7.5 million.

The beauty and abundance of Santa Fe are vast and multifaceted with a colorful history of being the trading hub of the southwest. As the country’s oldest and highest (7,199 feet above sea level) state capitol located at the crossroad of the El Camino Real, the Spanish trail from Mexico City and the Old Santa Fe Trail from the east, Santa Fe has always had a rich and varied trade business.

Today, Santa Fe is known for its exciting annual art markets and its on-going support of local artists, writers, musicians and performers. As the country’s third largest art market, three tremendously successful art fairs are held here each year. The Spanish Colonial Art Market in July, with over 250 Spanish artists; The Native American Indian Art Market in August, featuring over 1,000 Native American artists; and the International Folk Art Market offering work from 160 master artists from 53 countries in July.

In addition, there are also rich and exciting art communities in Santa Fe. The historic Canyon Road art district has over 100 fine art galleries all within a half-mile, each offering a diverse array of art by established and emerging artists. The Railyard District boosts contemporary art and performances and the dynamic contemporary art museum exhibition platform, SITE Santa Fe.

The homegrown arts production company, Meow Wolf offers immersive, multimedia art experiences and the on-going free music concerts such as the nightly summer concerts at the Plaza’s Bandstand and the Music On The Hill at St. John’s College bring a lively and diverse musical variety to every member of the community.

Santa Fe is also known as a culinary destination with world-class restaurants offering an amazing diversity of cuisine by award-winning chefs as well as our own, unique and hearty Northern New Mexico fare such as posole green chile stew and chile rellenos in traditional red chile sauce.

Some of New York’s best kept secrets remain hidden in plain sight. Whether that’s the city’s best burger, hidden speakeasy with the best cocktails, or bookshops that seem almost purposefully hidden, sometimes keeping something away from the public to gawk at makes it that much cooler. 22 Bond Street may as well be the real estate equivalent of those points. Hidden behind a giant steel façade, looked to be weathered through time of New York history, this luxury tower is everything but rust-colored.

Behind its large privacy wall, 22 Bond offers a unique blend between art and high-end design. The building’s penthouse offers 22-foot high ceilings, private elevators, three bedrooms, 3.1 bathrooms, a custom kitchen decked out with Smallbone of Devizes, and Gaggenau appliances, all over 3,828 square feet. The property is newly listed on the market from Douglas Elliman’s Darren Sukenik for just under $15 million.

If this penthouse feels more like an art gallery than a home—good. The building’s original intent was to have this be a resident’s private gallery, and its continued to be treated as such, being given the utmost care and attention to detail while filing the space in the building with installations by Federico Uribe and Roy Nachum in the lobby.

While the building and penthouse feel as though one would never want to leave, 22 Bond Street is also a neighborhood like no other in the city. Strattling NoHo, Greenwich Village, SoHo, and NoLita, 22 Bond has everything from great restaurants like ATLA or Mile End, fitness studios like SoulCycle, buzzy bars from the NYU crowd to finer watering holes like ACME, and transit areas at Broadway/Lafayette and Astor Place. For all the ability and range this building has to offer, its no wonder they wanted to keep this space hidden behind steel walls.

Antepavillion, a new annual competition of artists, designers, and architects, challenged its competitors to take rooftops in the London neighborhood of Hackney, and solve a worldwide issue on a small scale. In cities everywhere, urban planners, architects, designers, and inhabitants are trying to fix a growing problem: how to fit everyone in this city. The teams each composed rooftop structures in the area that are both architecturally beautiful and economical uses of the space in the area.

Supported by Shiva Ltd. and the Architecture Foundation, the competition is based in the tiny houses trend, and applying it to practical uses to find a way to add beauty to them by rethinking how we live in cities. They were also encouraged to base their designs in sustainability and using recycled materials. Each design is meant to be built in a 430 square foot area, and be easy to assemble and disassemble.

PUP Architects and engineers from AKTii, along with several builders and volunteers, created this year’s winning design. The structure is built to replicate an HVAC air duct. In London, it is legal to install mechanical rooftop equipment like these air ducts without getting approval from building permits. The design is meant to call into question this principle, suggesting that these types of structures are plausible to build across the city. The design was selected from over 128 proposals, and will remain on display in London for two years as an installation.

“While permitted development exists for large scale infrastructural roof installations, little challenge has been made for other viable and productive uses for rooftops,’ PUP architects told DesignBoom. “By subverting the form of the permitted and giving it a non-standard use, we hope to bring into question this order of priorities. We envisage this pavilion as a prototype for the guerilla habitation of London’s roofspace producing a landscape of rooftop structures akin to New York’s famous water towers.”

In an era not only where things are becoming more cramped, but that “tiny living” has evolved to not excluding luxe living, the architects, builders, and designers working on these models today could become the next big trend to sweep though densely populated American cities, giving residents an artistic boost and possible rent relief.

Summer's come and gone, but it brought us some of the biggest architectural achievements of the year: sandcastles. Some were gigantic and nearly life-sized, some were small with complex details. Others required a bucket flip and nothing more. Of all the summer sandcastles that were constructed these past few months, these are the six we're most eager to live in.

1. This ultra-modern maven, bound to be the next Frank Gehry.

2. The classic renaissance model, complete with towers.

3. This castle, with watchtowers to see people leaving via slide.

4. We don't know who dribbled this, but they have a great eye for Gothic Revival architecture.

5. This mega-castle, which just nabbed the Guinness World Record for World's Tallest Sandcastle, built in the land-locked city of Duisberg, Germany.

6. Maybe not the fanciest, but having a great facade can make all the difference.

Interior designer, Diego Alejandro Rincon, of Diego Alejandro Design, New York creates inspirational designs for his clients and helps fight AIDS at “Postcards from the Edge”

On Saturday January 26, 2013 one of the many individuals you’ll see waiting near the front of the line outside the Sikkema Jenkins & Co. gallery in Chelsea will be Colombian born architect, now turned interior designer Diego Alejandro Rincon. He’s there, because at 10am the doors open to the 15th annual Postcards from the Edge Benefit in support of Visual AIDS. Visual AIDS is the only contemporary arts organization fully committed to HIV prevention and AIDS awareness through producing and presenting visual art projects, while assisting artists living with HIV/AIDS.

Since 1998, the organization has produced the annual Postcards From The Edge exhibition and benefit sale of original, postcard-sized works on paper by established and emerging artists.

Since attending his first sale in 2010, interior designer, Diego Rincon, found such inspiration in the works of hundreds of artists that come together to support this organization that it’s become his signature touch in all of his interior design projects. Most recently, he debuted one of his most ambitious uses of this unique art as part of his interior design of a South Beach residence — creating a work of art within a work of art by perfectly aligning over 30 individual pieces and incorporating interesting uses of negative space to create a dramatic entry gallery.

But getting his hands on his favorite pieces each year takes a lot of preparation, planning and sometimes even a friendly elbow push. It all starts the night before during the preview exhibit, where no matter who you are, you can only look, not buy. So you’ll find Diego ignoring the cocktails and social scene, and instead meticulously inspecting each of the over 1,500 submitted pieces. He carefully photographs his favorites, and goes back around again and again. As he says, “The exhibit can feel overwhelming, and it’s easy to miss a great piece on those vast walls of art, so I review them again and again to make sure I’ve given each piece the attention it deserves.” Ultimately, he can end up leaving the preview exhibit with photos of 100 or more favorites. So that night he continues to curate his collection to cull down his favorites to a more manageable number.

On Saturday morning, several hours before the sale opens, the first would-be buyers including Diego begin to arrive and patiently begin the wait. Diego uses this time to continue evaluating his selects and deciding which are must haves and therefore require quick action. At 10am the doors open and the race is on. It’s all first come first serve. So you’ve got to decide quickly and make a yes/no buying decision right away. Diego knows to immediately find one of the many volunteers and quickly begin making his selects. As the tag for each selection is pasted on his buy form, he’s carefully scanning the room for anyone who might be threatening to take one of his other beloved selects before he gets to it. Once his true favorites are safely in his hands, he finally begins to relax a bit and starts to take a fresh look at the pieces that have yet to be claimed. Every year he’s surprised to find even more favorites that he somehow missed during his meticulous pre-planning.

Ultimately, he’s likely to end the day with 30, 40 or 50 pieces purchased. And he may even return the next day for one final walk through. At his Flatiron deign studio he opens each piece, where the name of the artist along with information on the piece or their inspiration is finally revealed. Often the descriptions are truly touching and especially moving as the artist recounts a personal story about the impact AIDS has had on their life or the life of a loved one. But each piece is now destined for just the perfect place, in the perfect combination for his current interior design projects. Of course, there’s always more than one personal favorite that he simply won’t part with that ends up in a special place in his home.
