At the tip-top of the InterContinental New York Barclay hotel, the Harold S. Vanderbilt Sky Suite exudes an opulent, contemporary design that mimics the original 1920s Federalist-style interior that the hotel is known for.
Designed by Stonehill & Taylor, the Barclay’s newest suite debuted following the hotel’s recent $180 million renovation, which included the redesign of its Presidential Suite.
The top-story, seven-room Sky Suite was designed as a tribute to Harold S. Vanderbilt––who was the director of the New York Central Railroad and a frequent guest of the hotel––with portraits of his ancestors and historic maps of Manhattan.
Intended to feel like a New York City residence more than a hotel suite, the Sky Suite reflects a modern interpretation of the hotel’s Federalist style, with a palette of slate grey, navy, taupe and gold.
"The Federalist style of the suite features custom-designed nods to Art Deco in reference to the Chrysler building, which can be viewed from the outdoor terrace," says Nikoletta Stagias, interiors associate at Stonehill & Taylor.
Within its 4,000 square feet, the two-bedroom, three-bathroom, suite is designed with more masculine details, including stone flooring; marble wall paneling in Calacatta Gold, Noir St. Laurent, Emperador Dark, and Crema Marfil; antique Persian carpets; and mahogany crown molding, bases, and millwork bookcases.
The master bathrooms is fully lined in grey marble, while the reception area is finished with red oak flooring and white oak borders.
Floor-to-ceiling windows offer exceptional views of Midtown Manhattan and the Chrysler Building. A squash court is located on the rooftop.
The InterContinental New York Barclay reopened in April 2016, with 702 guestrooms and suites.
Its redesign was a collaborative effort between the InterContinental Hotel Group, Design Studio, Stonehill & Taylor, Charbel Kallab, and Shawmut Construction.
