Every wall is dressed in a charcoal-colored grasscloth wallpaper from Thibaut. These dark, textured walls ground the room while exuding an overall calming and sophisticated vibe. It is the bed that takes center stage, though. Handmade in California, the sunburst caning draws you in, reminding you of simpler times even though it is juxtaposed with a sleek dresser and a retro, shag rug that’s modernized with a metallic sheen. This juxtaposition creates an equilibrium that you can feel as soon as you walk in.

The stunning cobalt blue vase was hand blown by the incredibly talented team at Tightrope in Brooklyn, NY. It casts an electrifying, creativity-inspiring hue as it filters the sun’s light.

Modern lighting from Lume Room on Howard Elliot’s blue mirrored nightstand is paired with a custom-made, traditionally styled ceiling fixture by ABC Lighting in New Jersey adding a deeper level of intrigue to the space. Natural elements, animal prints, modern art, and a 12 string guitar all contribute to the diverse character of the room and reflect the inhabitants' many interests.

Overall, this space is the ideal eclectic retreat. Traditional pieces, modern touches, and contemporary art blended to reflect a life well-lived.

Commissioned by NBC’s George to the Rescue, Riese Design, Inc. came aboard this project to help a family live and function more efficiently. The project scope included a complete makeover on the first floor of a home which encompassed the office, living room & dining room. The client's biggest pain point was lack of organization and storage while additionally having a lack of ability for a room to multifunction.

In this case, the homeowner was running an entire department for a non-profit organization out of a very small office with limited storage leaving her feeling both helpless and overwhelmed. At the same time, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this set of parents had three children homeschooling, making workspace an issue.  All three children used the dining room as their classroom which overcrowded the room, to say the least. The living room was also in dire need of an update since it was situated between the office and the dining room, we obviously had to provide a nice cohesive flow.

To solve these problems, we gave the homeowner a large desk to be able to work and video conference along with custom-built storage for all of her filing needs. The room was also wrapped in beautiful wallpaper to provoke a calming energy to balance the stress of work.

In the living room, Riese Design provided a custom sofa along with décor and accessories to not only make the family comfortable but also keep within the pallet from the office providing fluidity throughout the open spaces. In the dining room, Riese Design provided a multi-functioning solution including a custom built-in outfitted with interior electrical outlets, making storing and charging devices such as computers both hidden and convenient. Inside of the built-ins, Riese Design also provided storage for each respective child’s schoolwork to maintain the organization of the space. When devices and paperwork are away the room serves as a traditional dining room for families to convene and enjoy a meal together. This project was both special and an honor to be a part of.

NYCxDESIGN announced a new competition called IMPACTxDESIGN to transform New York City’s design scene. The program is in partnership with Caesarstone and the Design Trust for Public Space.

The IMPACTxDESIGN program calls all designers to show off their talents to further public engagement in Dumbo, Brooklyn, and downtown Manhattan. The new competition program aims to enhance public space and foster public engagement.

Design submissions are open until April 8. Design proposals must transform existing public places. The proposals should bring people together offering a place to slow down and appreciate the city’s beauty and fresh air. The designers must use Caesarstone’s quartz as their primary material.

The program will announce the two winning designers in May 2021. The winners will be awarded $10,000 each and the opportunity to work alongside NYCxDESIGN, Caesarstone, the Design Trust for Public Space, Dumbo Improvement District, and Downtown Alliance to install their designs. Not only that, the winning designers can make their mark in the city and gain exposure. The installations will be revealed this fall, before the NYCxDESIGN festival.

“Public space is one of New York’s most important assets. How we design, imagine and create these areas will impact New Yorkers for generations,” reported Executive Director of the Design Trust for Public Space Matthew Clarke.

“We are confident the program participants will create inspiring spaces with our beautiful and durable materials that will allow people to enjoy their surroundings and shared experiences,” Caesarstone Vice President of Marketing Elizabeth Margles explained.

The winning installations will remain in their location for at least one year.

NYCxDESIGN is a non-profit organization that organizes year-round activities to support and provide opportunities for New York City designers. Its mission is to help rebuild and re-energize the city as a design destination and creative center.

Flooded with natural light, the East Hampton home built by New York-based architecture firm, Mojo Stumer, boasts a 1,030-square foot living room and entertainment space, imported French chandeliers, a warm and modern study, and a lush backyard with a resort-like pool and cabana.

The living room and entertainment space are highlighted by the high-vaulted ceilings and surrounding balcony. Imported from France, three delicate chandeliers were carefully spaced on the ceiling to express the lighting features that set the tone for the entire space.

In the study area, a custom cerused oak shelving unit is installed with white painted backsplash. The warm tones and modern furnishings throughout the room creates a comfortable working atmosphere.

A comfortable seating nook is placed in front of the windowpanes, which helps to create that cozy atmosphere along with the natural light. The subtle color palette creates an inviting feel throughout the room.

Donelson asked Dolly for her advice to the younger generation of real estate agents coming up. "Stay the course," she said. "Know your data. Really get into the details of information. The only way you can get credit with any buyer is if you know the details."

Jenny added, "We all have time now to learn every new development. Everything is online. If a client knows something you don't, that's bad."

They are optimistic about the near future of the real estate industry. "We are fortunate to be in this business that can come back on a short term basis," said Dolly.

The interview was hosted by Haute Living's Seth Semilof. Parker began his remarks by giving praises to the medical community and first responders that have been hard at work.

On the interaction with banks, while those are working on the Small Business Administration rollouts, he said "I've spoken with a number of banks. Lenders have reached out to me. The rates being as low as they are, I feel confident we will see a strong financial market. Unlike the last recession, lenders are much more cautious about lending. The banks are in the business of providing financing, and they will get back to that."

"Think of this like any slow period," he said about advice he and his leadership team give to their agents. "In our business, it's not uncommon for an agent to have no business. It's important we focus on goals. Make a plan for when this passes. Work on your database. Distinguish new and old clients. Request reviews from clients. Make five calls, send five emails, five thank-you notes, five text messages every day. Communicate with your clients. See how they and their families are feeling. If possible, spend time with your family. Take an online course you did not have time to before. And connect with agents in other markets."

"This is going to be a time that presents a lot of pent-up demand," he said about the post-quarantine market. "We launched a project in West Palm Beach last month. Things are going to be delayed, but we are working on pre-development."

He also answered questions submitted by viewers during the live broadcast. On a question about relocations to South Florida from other major markets, submitted by One Thousand Museum developer Louis Birdman, Parker said, "We saw a surge of interest in rentals at the beginning (of quarantine times). Now, those people that were borderline retirement are saying, 'Let's do it now'. We will see more people moving from California and New York moving here full-time. I think that New York, one of the strongest and most important cities in the world, will bounce back out of this pandemic." Parker took the opportunity to congratulate Birdman on the recent purchase of a One Thousand Museum penthouse by David Beckham.

The brothers spoke of the real estate markets in The Hamptons, New York City, and South Florida and how each has adapted to the current times of quarantine. They talked candidly about how they and their agents are working to support their clients, new developments they are representing, and more.

Oren recalled how the market was going through difficult times when they started their business in 2009 and his outlook for the coming future. "This time it's not a financial crisis but a global pandemic. Though things have rightfully slowed down, we feel that the market and the economy will be back. There will be deals out there." He continued on how they are using the current times to plan ahead. "Before, our days were very fast-paced. This moment during quarantine has given us time to strategize about our future."

Tal went into detail about the New York market's current standstill. "Over the last month, there are no showings taking place in New York. We let our sellers what's taking place and our protocol. Before the crisis, the market was up; things were selling. I believe we will get back to business. In The Hamptons, the summer months are the busiest. People snatched up rentals in The Hamptons quicker this year through Labor Day weekend, creating an extended summer season."

On Miami, Oren looks positively on the real estate market coming out of the quarantine mode currently in place for the industry and life overall. "I do feel that South Florida has the most to gain out of it. People are putting value into their life and home," he said. "I feel the Miami market will be on top as we close out 2020. We have an amazing inventory that we are looking to start showing."

For the rest of 2020 in real estate, Tal said, "For New York, I think we will have a lot of pent-up demand (for movement). People will need to have more space or downsize."

Casone took over and engaged the panelists in an hour-long conversation that encompassed multiple real estate markets. They gave their thoughts on the best ways for real estate agents, brokers, developers, and the industry overall to deal with the effect that COVID-19 has had on business and the rest of the year.

"There have been many changes in the way we are all doing business," said Birdman. "Real estate is a face-to-face business, but that has changed with this outbreak. People still need to move, have leases coming up and other circumstances, so properties continue to get shown in different ways to ensure the safety of sellers, buyers and people working at properties."

Stern spoke on New York's state of real estate affairs since the Big Apple became the center of the Coronavirus pandemic in the US. "For New York, we closed our office three and a half weeks ago, completely working remotely except for construction," he said. Then, he continued to compare his company's activity in South Florida with New York. "In Miami, we have not seen much of a drop in manpower in construction. For the most part, we are doing construction in Florida and largely stopped in New York."

The construction of The Estates at Acqualina has continued while adapting to today's standards of social distancing and higher use of technology for marketing. "We are able to continue with the construction, but taking care of our workers," said Trump. He continued, "We are making great use of technology to share communications to tell the story of The Estates at Acqualina. We are in constant communication with our customers today, even more so than prior."

Casone asked Defortuna about the quick learning curve for the entire industry on how to conduct business from a distance. "Especially on the luxury side of the market, nobody needs to buy a second or third home," he said. "They buy it because they love it. From the marketing point of view, we have specialized in marketing to the entire world, providing tools to brokers to promote our projects in Latin America, Europe, and worldwide. Presentations of this type are happening all over the world. My brokers are saying they are busier now than before when they were doing presentations one-on-one."

The Summit started on the evening of this past Tuesday, February 11th with an intimate dinner inside the building's Armani Restaurant, where Italian cuisine was the star of the evening. Just like the panels that would take place the following day, diners experienced a three-course meal that delighted the palate.

They spoke about the current state of the real estate market in Miami-Dade and close communities in Broward and Palm Beach counties that are a quick drive up I-95 and enjoy the same South Florida weather yearlong. When asked about the state of the market, Maria Eugenia Alvarez Vitale, Head of Sales of G&G Business Developments, said, “The market is good.” She is currently focused on sales of Aston Martin Residences in Downtown Miami, an area that she has gotten to know even more through her involvement with the British carmaker’s namesake building. "We are over 50% sold in Aston Martin Residences. The downtown area is booming," she added.

Phil Gutman, President of Brown Harris Miami, opined from the brokerage point of view, comparing the high- and middle-priced homes in the luxury market. “The upper part of the market has been doing well; the middle not so much.”

Palm Beach County real estate expert Steve Solomon, Senior Director of Luxury Sales at Douglas Elliman Real Estate based in Boca Raton, said, "In Boca Raton and Delray Beach, the market is very good. There are many buyers in the market. It's an active season for the $1-3 million range."

Vidal asked, “Besides the weather and tax incentives, what drives people to move to Miami?” Crista Ryan answered, "The wonderful security. We ride our bicycles and feel safe in our communities." She is based in Palm Beach County, where she acts as President of Tina Fanjul Associates. New York native Gutman added, “The quality of life. I grew up walking NY's streets, hearing taxis screech on the road. Here it's more laid back, but we have a lot of companies' headquarters in the area."

Participating as part of the “home team”, Senior Vice President of Dezer Development Sebastian Tettamanti spoke about renting versus buying. "The rental market is very active. The buyer is taking a bit longer,” he said. “Now that there is so much product, agents take clients to more locations. However, the product is moving and we are making sales."

Christian Martinez, Regional Vice President of Florida at Compass, said, "Higher listings take longer, but we see them moving. It also depends on the market. Certainly in Miami, Coral Gables and Coconut Grove have an active market” as he remarked on famous sections of the Greater Miami Area. He added, “Overall, New York money continues to flow into Broward and Palm Beach counties."

Partner and Private Office Advisor of Engel & Völkers Miami Lourdes Alatriste emphasized how members of the luxury real estate market need to research potential buyers for proof of funds. “At that level of luxury properties, you should know who they are."

Queen of New York real estate Dolly Lenz emphasized how important it is to know and relate to a high net worth client, saying, "Read The Wall Street Journal. Know what's going on in politics; in business; where the pitfalls are, so you can share that with them. I think that's key." Her daughter, Jenny Lenz, joined her mother four years ago at Dolly Lenz Real Estate, learning about the best from the best, and brought that knowledge into the panel.

Cody Vichinsky, Founding Partner at Bespoke Real Estate, focuses his company on $10+ million listings only with an in-house team of agents and staff that tailor their listings' marketing, such as Burnt Point in The Hamptons. "We look at the market very focused in the high luxury market. We have no independent agents, so our model is entirely different from a conventional brokerage business. It's more dynamic."

Olivia Hsu Decker, Co-owner of Golden Gate Sotheby's International Realty, which encompasses over two dozen offices in the San Francisco Bay Area, hit the target as she described the luxury real estate world. "Our business is a people business," she said.

Jay Parker, CEO of Douglas Elliman Florida Brokerage, addressed the luxury market in Miami compared to other cosmopolitan cities. "You look at luxury (real estate) in other cities compared to Miami and you find that our price points (in Miami) are pretty attractive".

Michael Goldstein, President of The Trump Group, highlighted the migration to South Florida from the north as he oversees sales of The Estates at Acqualina. " 75% of our business is coming from New York," he said.

Ben Bacal, a leader in the Los Angeles real estate and creator of the Rila app, gave his expertise on the LA market. "Since 2017-2018, properties in Hillcrest have gone down in price to where they need to be. We see an uptick in international buyers. I want to teach my agents to be powerhouses in each of their market and become power agents in those areas. "

One of New York’s most successful brokers of apartments and townhouses, Richard Steinberg held nothing back as he compared and contrasted the buyers and sellers in the lower-priced and higher-priced markets. "Every seller thinks they charge too little. Every buyer thinks they pay too much,” he said. “But they buy it because they want it. My advice to people (brokers) is to go for the big stuff because it's much harder to sell the small stuff," encouraging the live audience and those that watched the live stream on Instagram to reach higher.

Sue Nickason, based in the Cayman Islands and Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Dart Real Estate, had a unique insight on the small island “tax haven”. "Our sweet spot is beach, beach, beach,” she said. “We have a brokerage that did the most sales in the Cayman Islands last year, just shy of $100 million."

On the influence of technology in the luxury real estate market, Dolly Lenz said, "I think it's playing a small role. I find it to be hyped at the moment. In five years, applications will really change how we do business."

Mary Ann Osborn, Leading Broker at Century City, followed on that, "The older people come in through signage on the property and require you to hand-hold them through the process," about the extra personal touch that comes when selling luxury real estate, particularly to people that are not as engaged with technology as younger generations.

A long round of applause was given to the panelists at the end, many who had traveled from far to participate in the Summit.

Built-in 1913 and celebrated as the tallest building in the world at that time, The Woolworth Building rises above City Hall Park. This National Historic landmark has inspired countless artists, dreamers, and everyday New Yorkers, and today under the architectural and aesthetic hand of Thierry W Despont, the top thirty floors are being reimagined into thirty-three luxury condominium residences, crowned by a five-story Pinnacle Penthouse, commanding views of parks, landmarks and the iconic New York City skyline.

Here are the most exciting pieces this year.

Montreal Parisian Laundry Gallery opens the show (it is literally the first stall you encounter) with a stunning exhibit from Gabriele Beveridge. “By isolating, juxtaposing, layering and ultimately recontextualizing objects including found images, shop fittings, semi-precious stones and hand blown glass, the artist is able to rupture and rearrange the conventional staging of attraction and desire. These visual strategies work less to dismantle conventions of the beautiful than to exaggerate them to a point where they are made alien, initiating a fluctuation between the attractive and the unfamiliar."

This enormously powerful charcoal drawing (enormous both in power and size: 101 x 120 inches) by Robert Longo is in Galerie Thaddeus Ropac’s booth. The Brooklyn artist’s use of charcoal expresses great depth and realism on such a massive scale.

Swiss gallery Cortesi highlights Belgian artist Wayne LeBlanc’s Mobilio-Statique which is anything but static. Made with polyvinyl shards, the black and yellow dynamic art move with the viewer’s movements.   

A huge crowd gathers around Spanish artist Nacho Carbonell’s lit sculptures, highlighted in Carpenters Workshop Gallery’s first-ever Armory show booth. Carbonell’s sculptures, made of metal mesh, stone and concrete look like coral on the ocean floor. About his creations, Carbonell says, “I like to see objects as living organisms, imagining them coming alive and being able to surprise you with their behaviour.”

The Pace Gallery's display of Tara Donovan’s massive installation is made from clear plastic tubes of varying heights that fill a space the size of an airplane hanger. Shaped into a wedge, Donovan uses a single material to play on light and edge that seem to expand to infinity.

Photographer JR’s “So Close” exhibit, shown by Jeffrey Deitch, displays life-sized translucent images of Ellis Island immigrants waiting in line.

Jose Carlos Martinat’s Distractor IV is a spinning, turning sculpture made with LEDs, motors, microcontrollers, collectors, wood, aluminum and iron.

Galerie Ron Mandos’ display of Mohau Modisakeng’s photography series Zion draws viewers in. The artist’s use of material, metaphor and the black body symbolize South Africa’s violent history and how we understand our cultural, political, and social roles as human beings in post-colonial Africa.

Amsterdam gallery Upstream, showcased Dutch artist’s Constant Dullaart’s. Dullaart’s PVA Composition is made with hundreds of “fake” phone sim cards pasted on a mirror and on photos of the Battle of Saratoga. The art symbolizes a “fake army to stand up in the war against the current American social media revolution and the false validation system in journalism based on follower counts.” 

The crowd pleasing My Turn, a work by Edward Cella Art and Architecture’s Alex Schweder and Ward Shelley, showcase the men taking turns sitting in the tiny ferris wheel. Tired show-goers taking a break on the nearby couches are amused by the show.

Two galleries showcase works by Yayoi Kusama, whose garden of red-and-white polka-dotted penis sculptures drew a lot of attention at last year’s Armory show. This year’s Kusama displays are much more tame. The Omer Tricohe Gallery shows Kusama's rare works on paper.

Pierogi Gallery draws crowds with The Pink Forest, a diorama by Patrick Jacobs. The pink explosion is made with styrene, acrylic, cast neoprene, paper, hair, polyurethane foam, ash, talc, starch, acrylite, vinyl film, copper, wood, steel, lighting, BK7 glass.

For all the Sex and the City fans out there, (and even the ones who won’t admit it) the rivalry between Carrie and Mr. Big drifts into all kinds of aspects of their life. At the beginning of their relationship, one of their first big differences was in apartment style. Big lived in a swanky apartment uptown, where as Carrie had a more lived-in abode within walking distance of Bloomingdale’s (that was preposterously big for a weekly writer, trust us!)

In real life, the actors have the inverse taste in real estate, with both making headlines in New York. Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick are currently in the construction phases of creating a Franken-mansion in the West Village, only a few blocks away from their current apartment. The space is also only a few blocks away from "Carrie's Apartment", the set that was meant to depict her characters's building much farther uptown. The power couple recently bought two adjacent town houses in the neighborhood and has scheduled plans for interior demolition and reconstruction. The West 11^th Street homes cost a total of $35 million. Once conjoined, they will feature a 2,100 square foot private garden, and cover about 13,900 square feet in total.

Chris Noth, AKA Mr. Big, is comfortable in a more subdued setting. The actor recently purchased a small co-op on the Upper East Side, in a pre-war Lenox Hill building. While the building was renovated recently, it still has classic touches like oversized windows, herringbone wood floors and crown molding. Noth paid a reported $1.85 million for the space, $30,000 less than it was previously listed for. Noth also owns an apartment downtown on 9^th street in the same building as Sex and the City writer, Candace Bushnell, used to live.

Whether its on the screen or in the streets, Carrie and Mr. Big are still at it in the New York real estate game to see who can score the headlines. As expected though, Carrie always wins in the end.

With Labor Day about to close out the summer season, people are leaving the vacation homes behind and flocking back to New York in droves. For Hamptonites, this means performing the ancient ritual of Tumbleweed Tuesday, in which you sit in your car in traffic so long, by the time you get home it’s almost Memorial Day again.

Before the Hamptons became the go-to destination though for New York’s high society, Newport, Rhode Island was the place to be. In gilded-age New York, New York’s biggest bold faced names summered further north, in the seaside town, constructed their own mansions that today remain historically preserved on the waterfront, and offer museum-styled tours of several properties.

The Breakers

This mansion, originally constructed for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, was built in an Italian Renaissance design, and covers nearly 125,000 square feet. The 70-room house is five stories tall and covers one acre roughly with the building. The yard also runs down toward the cliff walk, with views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Beechwood

First owned by Daniel Parrish, a wealthy businessman in New York, the Parrish mansion was sold in 1881 to William Backhouse Astor, Jr. The Astor Family name is also the reference behind Astor Place, the Waldorf Astoria, and the Queens neighborhood of Astoria. Beechwood was remodeled by architect Richard Morris Hunt, and outfitted for the Astors’ love of entertaining. The building has a ballroom, library, and wallpaper imported from Paris. The mansion is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of those who loved attending parties and social gatherings at the mansion.

Chateau-sur-Mer

This palatial estate was the original grandest home in the area until the Vanderbilt family constructed The Breakers mansion. It was build for William Shepard Wetmore, a wealthy businessman from the China Trade. At his death, Wetmore bestowed much of his fortunate, including the estate, to his son Geroge Peabody Wetmore, who would go on to become the governor of Rhode Island. He remodeled the building, using now-reknowned architect Richard Morris Hunt, who had gone on to create the New York Tribune Building, and the pedestal for the Statue of Liberty.

Miramar

This 30,000 swuare foot, French neoclassical mansion was built in 1915 for George Widener. Widener was a business man in Philadelphia who would later go on to pass away in the sinking of the RMS Titanic. When Widener had passed, the building was still in the early design stages. His widow, Eleanor Elkins Widener, was rescued from the shipwreck in a lifeboat, and took on the project to its completion in 1915.
