Walt Disney Concert Hall Threatened by Subway Lines

Renowned architect Frank Gehry warned audiences of the potential damage a new subway track could do to the sound at his LA Walt Disney Concert Hall, but the line is set to go up nevertheless in 2020.

In 2011, Metro’s noise abatement consultants had offered a prediction that there would be no audible change, but Gehry still believes otherwise. In April, Fred Vogler (the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s recording engineer) conducted a test in which subwoofers simulated the sound of a passing train: the results were alarming and indeed heard within the building.

Art Leahy, Metro’s chief executive, continues to assure Gehry and local residents that nothing will be done to damage the hall.
