We have to connect with as many people as possible around the holidays. Whether it is through zoom, a drive-by, a phone call, a letter or email. Business is not as we knew it, and that doesn’t mean it can’t be better than it was! We can’t go back – we have to move forward and we can’t long for what was.

Was it really that great?

I sell residential real estate and I have always loved my job. An affirmation that I taped to a wall in my office says, “If you love what you do, you never have to work a day in your life.” I’ve had it taped there for a decade and I still believe that. But I found I was on a never-ending treadmill without balance in my life. I always had a great time no matter what I was doing or who I was with, but this forced quarantine has changed so many things for me. I am loving the time at home with my husband and my two Yorkies. We have a great routine and when we need space, we have it. I miss my daughter but enjoy our zoom calls, especially the ones with wine. We talk all the time and send funny and inspiring messages back and forth throughout the day. My new schedule makes plenty of time for exercise throughout the day which I was determined to maintain and I do.

Now let’s get to business!

Now more than ever we understand that our home is truly our sanctuary, our haven, our private space, our protection, our shelter, our peace. On one of our wine-infused zoom calls, I told my daughter that I felt like my home was giving me a hug…I cherish it.

How we do business with our buyers and sellers in the future will look a little different, however, it will be done professionally and carefully and here is how I envision it.

For the Sellers of Property:

Photography is everything!

• Great stills, videos, slideshows, and the more the better.
• Interact and advertise in as many different websites and media sources as possible, along with social media and of course print advertisements. It’s an effective combination of synchronized marketing.
• There must be a COVID-19 addendum signed by all parties, covering that no one in the immediate family is currently sick and no one has traveled recently. This is for the buyers and the sellers.
• The sellers request that buyers wear masks and gloves and some also require booties. No one should touch anything in the house. The broker will open doors and cabinets, when necessary.
• No children at showings.

It is basically the same for buyers…

• The agent would have the buyers follow them in their car and communicate via phone.
• We would confirm that the buyers are not dependent on the sale of their home to make a purchase.
• Sellers want to be sure they are dealing with qualified buyers.

Office Procedures:

• Every company will have its own house policies.
• I love working remotely and plan to do much more of this. 
• It helps with that balance I mentioned earlier.
• Some companies are allowing only one agent for each section of the building and masks and gloves are essential.
• Space may have to be reserved.

Every business will have to figure out their own nuances. The commonality with ALL businesses is both the clients and the employees/staff have to feel comfortable interacting with each other or it doesn't matter what we all do. Be safe and above all be considerate to one another. We are all in this together.

Although business will feel unusual for a while as we acclimate, I truly believe there are many things that will be better than before.

Let’s all work together, it’s so important – NOW MORE THAN EVER!

The value that you can get in our area of Bergen County is extraordinary... We are showing properties. We are putting transactions together. We were afraid of what people's attitudes were going to be, but we did not lose one transaction because of COVID(-19)."

Joel Schemmel: "The higher end of the market is engaged. Those who have the ability to buy now are taking advantage... It's almost like the faucet is turned back on here (in Sarasota area). We have been incredibly busy for the last two to three weeks. All those people that were contemplating retirement or buying a second home in 1-5 years are all of a sudden want to talk... We went from a pretty good first quarter to almost a standstill at the end of March, from 50mph to zero, but we adapted to that."

Northwest Bergen County offers a wide array of phenomenal restaurants. Here are some notable places to wine and dine in the area:

One of our favorites for many years is the Saddle River Inn in Saddle River. A charming historic barn houses the restaurant and the setting along the Saddle River is perfect. The food is outstanding, so prepare to book your ressie in advance. It’s not unusual to have a 30 day wait for a reservation! Chef Jamie Knott is in a class by himself.

Chef Knott recently opened a casual storefront restaurant, also in Saddle River, called the Saddle River Cafe. It’s open 7 days a week! The menu is small but diverse and the quality of the food is everything one expects from Jaime. Both The Saddle River Inn and The Saddle River Market are BYOB. We pick up our wine from Chuck Russo at Ho-Ho-Kus Wine & Spirits in Ho-Ho-Kus and off we go!

Another restaurant that is very special to us is Esty Street, located in Park Ridge, New Jersey. They have been around since the early ’90s and have always offered inventive and award-winning cuisine and wine. Esty Street was renovated and decorated by Philip La Bossiere, one of the tri-state area’s finest designers. We’ve enjoyed many a cocktail at their fabulous bar!

For Italian cuisine, we love Andrea’s in Waldwick, which has also been around for several decades. They will prepare anything you want, the way you want it. The portions are large (always plenty to take home for the next day) and sauces are great! They have a liquor license and will also allow you to bring your own bottle. When it comes to dessert time, we crave their Napolean and their chocolate covered bananas!

Our favorites for fish are Varka in Ramsey, which is wonderful. Pick your favorite fresh fish and they cook it to order. Their "Varka chips" are SO yummy. This area favorite gets packed, so plan ahead and make a ressie! They have a liquor license.

A more casual choice and just as delicious is Greek City in Ramsey, which is a storefront and BYOB. Their fish is fresh, their entrees are satisfying and we love one of their big booths.

For burgers and salads, Fire and Oak in Montvale is great. They also have a liquor license. It’s a larger space, so if you call a bit in advance, you should be able to get in.

Cafe Panache in Ramsey is another longtime favorite for upscale French American cuisine. Very creative and very fresh food. The service is always impeccable, parking is easy and its BYOB. Make that reservation in advance!

There are over 80 eateries in Ridgewood. mostly BYOB, many are excellent. The parking can be a challenge, so try to get there early. There are so many I don't even know where to start!

We are also approximately 30 minutes from Manhattan and have enjoyed many dinners all over NYC.  If you are looking for a night out in New York, here are a few of our favorites from casual to upscale:

Every year there’s a rush to list in May, June and July because that is when a home owner feels their property shows at its best.

Their pools are open, the lawns are green and landscaping is lush. This is also the season in the luxury market where many people are away at their summer homes or are on vacation. It can be difficult to get a prospective client to come out and look.

The luxury market is not always about the school calendar. We have had success selling homes in all seasons.Our slowest time is usually from Thanksgiving until the 2nd week of January, however, there have been years where we have had VERY strong December sales. When the need or desire to move is there, that's when the home should be listed.

It's about pricing the home correctly than it is about what month the home should come out on the market. The home has to be priced according to the current active inventory as well as sales within the past few months. This is critical in positioning the listing where it makes the most sense. The buyer has quite a bit of information available to them to determine if a house is fairly priced.

The reason some listings just sit is because there are homes in the same range offering more. Some of the information that a buyer can use to make a determination are: Property size, taxes, number of bedrooms and baths and amenities and features.

All of this is compared to the other available properties so that the potential buyer has the information to make a comparison. This why it is called a CMA(Comparative Market Analysis). This is the method that most real estate agents use. Also, the curb appeal of the photography is very important. In order to attract the buyer to a property the house needs to have its best foot forward so that it looks as attractive as possible for the buyer  to make an inquiry and then have the dialogue.

My final comment is, List now if you are ready to sell - and price it right!
