Matthew Chua of Chua Architecture transformed a 2,152-square-foot residence in 15 Central Park West, one of Manhattan’s most sought after buildings, into a modern and functional home inspired by 17th Century French architecture and fashion.

15 Central Park West is an architectural celebration of the building’s parkside vantage point. With its luxurious, full-block frontage on Central Park and show-stopping views in virtually every direction, 15 Central Park West offers the panoramic ideal for observing the light and color, nature and concrete that define life in New York.

Chua was tasked with a complete renovation (except for kitchen and master bath), including overhauling the powder room, guest bathroom, foyer, living room, dining room, built-in walk-in closets, and more.

Mid-century Austrian sconces and pendants illuminate the entry foyer, with a custom-designed console and wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries.

The living room invites guests with satin white millwork on all walls, Italian mid-century club chairs, sofa and tête-à-tête by Gregory Rockwell.

In the dining room, custom cove lighting with brass metal trim highlights the dining table and bistro table design by Gregory Rockwell made by Douglass Fanning. The breathtaking chandelier is also mid-century Austrian from John Sallibello.

The residence also features ample storage space and custom finishes throughout.

An impressive powder room serves as a main focal point for the residence, featuring Lilac Marble slabs with purple haze and sharp diagonal veining. The Tom Dixon Mirror Ball Pendant Light in gold is the cherry on top of a glamorous marble room.

The guest bathroom features large-format Statuarietto Marble. The custom frameless medicine cabinet, Fantini Linea Series accessories in chrome finish and Mitered edge stone shower niche detail add a touch of elegance to the home.

The master bedroom is dressed in blush pink and boasts a Gregory Rockwell bed and dressers and nightstands by Restoration Hardware. The Vladimir Kagan sofa screams luxury and fits perfectly with the French fashion theme.

British designer Tom Dixon made his grand return to the West Coast for the first time in two years to unveil key pieces of his 2019 collection in a prequel to the official launch at Mlan's Furniture and Designer Fair Salone del Mobile in April. While stopping at the Tom Dixon Studio at Platform, he shared some of the lessons learned in the rock’n’roll business and simultaneously unveiled never-before-seen FAT furniture and OPAL lighting.

Here, he discusses FAT, his new upholstery range designed to hug the body and allow for multiple sitting positions—available as a dining chair, barstool and lounge chair, made from molded foam with metal legs, launching in high gloss black lacquer and made to order upholstery—and OPAL, a family of translucent globes using tinted white Opalescent polycarbonate, as well as how his business has evolved over time.

We were excited to get a look at your new FAT Collection, Opal Lighting and Swirl collections. Can you tell us about your design process? How has this process changed over the years?

In French they say "Le plus ca change le plus c’est la meme chose"—meaning, it’s always changing but it’s still the same thing, a fascination with materials and processes from craft to industry. We design by making full-size mockups and prototypes, and then we work hard to get them made to a price and quality that makes them desirable.

The Tom Dixon brand is well known for cutting edge production and the incorporation of new technology methods into the production of your offerings. What are some key design and production development trends you are most excited about?

I think it’s an exciting time in lighting technology right now with innovative light sources and low energy changing and improving all the time. for the designer, the digitalization of manufacturing industry opens up all kinds of opportunity to experiment and get involved in flexible small batch production.

In what ways do you see the Tom Dixon brand growing in the future? And with further technological production advances?

We have spent the last 15 years building an infrastructure for design, development and distribution of our products, and it almost still feels like a startup! We are getting more involved in complementary categories of perfumes and restaurants and textiles and electronics, we are partnering with other companies in associated fields, and hoping to stay innovative and restless. The whole industry remains to be disrupted in the way that music and transport and publishing has been, so we hope to be part of that.

If you had to choose just three of your favorite Tom Dixon items to furnish your home what would they include?

I’m only interested in the latest thing that we have just launched, so one high one dining and one low-fat chair please!

Every year when the holidays roll around, the family gathers in one house to celebrate together, and the traditions unfold like clockwork. The same red wine gets brought out. Uncle Jim thinks he can open it, then he can't, then the cork gets stuck in the bottle.

Stop making the same mistakes every holiday party and get a wine decanter. This one, from British designer Tom Dixon, is a sleek, modern model that aerates and decants wine to its perfect taste. Not to mention, having a modern looking decanter is a great conversation piece, and looks great with anything in it year round. For the gift set of the decanter, that comes with the two glasses, is only $180. The smoky silhouettes in the design and gradient of color from black to clear glass also give a uniquely organic vibe to such a modern looking design, making it perfect for any home. Not to mention, wine bottles are always hard to pour with the weight unevenly distributed throughout the bottle. With the decanters even handle and wide spout on top, it's perfect to grip at the head and pour without worrying about splattering the rug.

While the holiday season may be filled with cozy sweaters, and organic, warm, traditional design pieces, this decanter can cut through it all and be the conversation piece of the night, while still blending into the holiday spirit.
