Last May, Elon Musk claimed that he would be selling his $100 million real estate portfolio in order to prioritize funding a colony on Mars. His motivation in selling off his "earthly possessions" is to emphasize the intentions and intensity regarding his mission of moving humans to Mars. Musk has since sold most of his properties including Gene Wilder’s former Los Angeles home for $7 million. However, the final remaining residence awaiting purchase is his “special place” in San Francisco.

In 2017, the business magnate purchased a lavish San Francisco home for $23.4 million, reportedly designating the property for events. In May of 2020, after publicly announcing the sale of his real estate portfolio, Musk listed the property for $35 million. A deal had not yet been closed in the months following leading him to eventually remove the listing in November. Yesterday, Musk once more listed the home at heightened price of $37.5 million. Reportedly, Musk currently resides in a Boca Chica, Texas property rented from his aerospace company SpaceX for less than $50 thousand.

Located south of San Francisco, Musk’s former “special place” is a historic 100-year-old mansion in Hillsborough. Spanning 16,000 square feet and 47 acres of land, the extravagant property includes 10 bedrooms and 9.5 bathrooms. The interior features a state-of-the-art professional kitchen, grand ballroom, formal banquet room, flower arranging room, and library. Stepping outside, the expansive exterior space offers a swimming pool, custom made pond, landscaped gardens, private hiking trails, and picturesque views of the Bay. Other perks include a detached 3-car garage, 8-car carport, and motor court parking.

The plan consists of outfitting 50,000 homes with solar panels and Tesla Powerwall batteries that will combine to produce 250MW of energy. The energy will be stored in the batteries and any excess will be fed into the power grid to provide energy to the entire region.

The “virtual” aspect comes into play as the system’s software can decide when to store energy in the battery and when to sell it back to the grid. During a blackout the system will disconnect from the grid and send energy exclusively to the house where it is installed.

The South Australian government says the virtual power plant could provide 20 percent of the state’s average daily energy requirements. The plan could lower energy bills by 30% for participating households, according to an analysis by Frontier Economics.

“All South Australians will also benefit from the increased generation in the South Australian energy mix, with lower energy prices and increased energy stability,” the South Australian government says.

An initial trial has already commenced, with 1,100 public housing properties receiving a 5kW solar panel and a 13.5KWh Tesla Powerwall 2 battery at no cost. An additional 24,000 public housing properties will receive a system soon after, with a wider rollout to private homes anticipated in 2019, depending on the success of the trials.

Tesla will build a service hub for the power plant at outside South Australia’s capital city of Adelaide in order to monitor and service the system. This is key as the region has been plagued by power failures in recent years.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said in a tweet that more than 6,500 homes have already signed up to register their interest in participating. Tesla will review all properties to see if they are able to participate in the system.

The project is being funded via a government grant and a state-funded technology fund totaling $32 million Australian dollars.

This is the second big energy undertaking for Elon Musk in Australia. Musk provided South Australia with the world’s biggest lithium-ion battery system after a crippling blackout in 2016.

Elon Musk has made his billions as co-founder of Paypal, SpaceX and Tesla Motors, and now he’s investing in some swanky real estate.

Musk just purchased the former home of Gene Wilder, Willa Wonka in the iconic film “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Musk’s current $17M home boasts 20,248 square feet, seven bedrooms and nine bathrooms, and it seems he loves his neighborhood because his new digs are only a few hundred feet away from his current residence.

The new property offers a ranch-style pad with 2,756 square feet, guesthouse, oval pool, one acre of pristine land with a stream and a view of the Bel-Air Country Club Golf Course.
