2013 marks Swarovski Crystal Palace’s 6^th year as a main sponsor for Design Miami, and this year “Mangue Groove,” an “architectural meditation on environmental conservation,” truly delivered.

The installation, crafted by Guilherme Torres, was intended to be visually captivating while also drawing attention to Brazil’s threatened ecosystems. Featuring reclaimed wood pathways, LED lighting, Swarovski crystals and sound recordings, Guilherme uses the Voronoi diagram, “a form of tessellation often used to calculate rainfall or forest growth patterns,” to connect nature and science within his work.

At 5pm each day, the installation reflected the Amazonian sunset.

Over 22,000 Swarovski crystals cover the surface of this incredible Saracen bath by Catchpole & Rye. What glamorous gal wouldn’t want to glitter, even in her bathtub? Socialite Tamara Ecclestone revealed she spent £1m on a blinged-out crystal bathtub in 2012, so, continuing on this trend (on perhaps a more realistic design budget), Harrods will sell Catchpole & Rye’s equally glamorous tub for £150,000 (over $195,000 US).

The Swarovski crystals on the claw-footed bath can be customized in gold, blue, or green, and the tub is created from cast metal featuring an enamel interior. Crafted by hand, it took over 200 hours of manpower to create this dazzling statement piece.

Managing Director Tony O’Donnell speaks of the idea to Daily Mail: “It was to do something exotic. We did a job for a princess in the middle east and she was very much into her bling, and that's where the idea stems from. There is a huge amount of work that goes into it, hundreds of hours, it's all English craftsmanship.”

Now, Eyal Burstein is honoring the 10th anniversary of Swarovski Crystal Palace with ‘Beta,’ a colorful presentation of furniture with an obvious link to Swarovski. Burstein, a designer at Studio Beta Tank, interpreted the cut crystal shape and used it as a vehicle to push the limits of conventional seat shapes.

For example, a Plexiglas bench is transparent and reflective, an ode to the properties of iridescent crystal. Brightly hued chairs in Burstein’s showcase feature crystal-shaped metal complete with LED lights, mimicking the glow of a perfect Chaton-cut crystal.

What a happy anniversary.
