Despite growing up on the East Coast (Long Island to be exact) in an eccentric family of dairy farmers, Jamie Bush headed west to discover the unsung heroes of mid-century modern residential architecture in Los Angeles. After observing photographers and artists in Manhattan, Bush was propelled into the study of art and architecture in New Orleans, Venice and Italy. His portfolio includes stints with Marmol Radziner and Kelly Wearstler, but soon founded his own architecture and design firm, Jamie Bush + Co in 2002. Today, he's known as one of Los Angeles' top interior designers after working on some of the most significant historical residential modernist homes in the US.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

Recognized for his ability to blur the lines between architecture and interior design, his ethos has always been to approach the design of a space as one holistic vision. Admired for his relevant and keen understanding of architecture and design, his firm has collaborated with some of the most respected names in the business including Steven Ehrlich, Marmol Radziner, David Hertz, Walker Workshop, and Barbara Bestor just to name a few. Now, he's finally returned to make his first mark on the East Coast at One Manhattan Square.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

"Extell contacted us looking for a ‘West coast vibe meets East coast sophistication’ and we couldn’t resist! One Manhattan Square is a unique building in New York where Extell dedicated a huge amount of over-scaled public spaces where you can explore and breathe, which is rare in a dense city such as this," said Bush.

Bush added,"because of the open spaces and generous volumes, it’s a different way of living in New York that we can relate to since we are based in Los Angeles where large open spaces are more the norm. This sensibility translated throughout the building, including our open-plan three-bedroom residence. I feel it was a great marriage – our contemporary interiors and Extell’s fresh take on modern living at One Manhattan Square."

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

Complete with heart-stopping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, the East River waterfront, and beyond, the interior design of this three-bedroom home on the 60th floor of One Manhattan Square is inspired by the views, with organic shapes and rich textures that recall the shapes of the New York Harbor and dynamic skyline.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

Bush employed his trademark sophisticated, modern aesthetic to create a home for an active, cosmopolitan family. A mix of custom modern furnishings, such as twin curved sofas in the expansive great room, and vintage pieces, like a 1950s Vittorio Dassi bar, resulting in an elevated, yet organic and comfortable, the heart of the home.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

"We took our inspiration of all the natural materials, textures and colors used throughout the building. Bold geometric forms can be found throughout the public areas, lots of wood paneling and wall treatments in corridors and the lounge areas and–of course--the views," said Bush.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

"We also added a mix of reflected materials to capture the incredible light such as a mix of polished metals – brass, bronze and chrome, as well as different glass treatments, which can be found in the glass room dividers, candlesticks, foil backed wall coverings and mirrors. In the end, we wanted to create a balanced design of bold, colorful organic forms rendered in luxurious materials such as mohair, silk and wool, exotic woods, stone and handblown glass."

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

The entire residence is clad in rich texture, such as in the serene master bedroom, where layers of calming neutral tones complement the panoramic city and water views.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

"I feel one of the show stopper pieces in the living room are the pair of colored contemporary glass Vela Screens by Bernhardt & Vella from Arflex. These screens are made of laminated pastel colored glass panels in bold geometric forms attached by architectural brass brackets. They were a perfect addition to the living room furniture plan because they captured the incredible light of the 60th-floor residence while providing a stylish separation from the entry and the dining room," he said.

Photo Credit: Courtesy One Manhattan Square

In a children's bedroom, a geometric Casa Kids bunk bed creates a playful atmosphere, bolstered by bright pops of unexpected color. Each room is an immersive experience that reflects the home's luxurious finishes and atmosphere.

But is this his first and last New York project? When we asked, he said, "well I’m originally from NY and all my family is there, so yes, of course, I hope to be doing more projects in New York soon. We are currently working on finishing up a crazy charming 3 story Houseboat getaway for myself and my partner on Long Island close to my family so it gets me back to New York several times a year."

The saying goes there's a place for everyone but at One Manhattan Square, there really is a residence to suit every type of character. The luxury development on New York's Lower East Side recently unveiled 10 model residences, each distinct and each designed by LES-based designer Anna Karlin. Whether you're a retail queen, the luxe family or a less is more type of person, here are 10 residences for every type.

The Instagrammer

Courtesy One Manhattan Square

A museum of artifacts, a very natural curation of a well-traveled eye. Everything you see, touch and hear has a story to tell.

The Urban Gardener

Courtesy One Manhattan Square

Hidden amongst the concrete jungle, we find an oasis, a secret paradise. Light spills from windows into this nest, revealing a unity between domesticity and nature.

Private Quarters

In the great race to offer the newest and best amenities in residential buildings, an ancient feature has recently gained popularly: hammams. A traditional hammam is a turkish bath. But more than that, it is a four-stage relaxation ritual involving different types of water and air at varying temperatures. The process starts with relaxation in a sauna with hot, dry air. Then it moves into a hotter room with steam combined with a cold water plunge pool. The third step is exfoliation by an attendant with an ancient cleansing soap and rough mitt called a kessa. The final step is retiring to a cool relaxation room.

Raizy Haas, senior vice president in charge of development at Extell Development, explains, “In my travels to Istanbul, I personally experienced the hammam tradition. It was overwhelming and amazing. I was always hoping we could incorporate into one of our projects and now we’ve done it.”

Haas says they “did their homework to better understand the origin of hammams and make sure we did it right. Not only is it a bathing ritual but it plays a significant social and cultural role in middle eastern countries.” Haas was determined to recreate that in Extell’s Lower East Side amenity-rich building One Manhattan Square.

Haute Residential has highlighted some of the best hammams in NYC and Miami's residential towers.

One Manhattan Square

One Manhattan Square’s hammam took inspiration from the 14th Century Ottoman Empire hammams and “interpreted that relaxation and ritual in modern way.” Haas explains, “We designed our hammam to meet busy lifestyle of our residents so you can do one or any combination of the four phases of the ritual.” There is an infrared sauna, a steam room, a cold plunge pool and a tranquility garden to end your relaxation in. If you want a traditional scrub down massage, you can order that service through the building.

Haas also explained their design reinterpreted the traditional hammams with modern mood lighting, heated benches (instead of cold, stone slabs) and private recessed stone chambers.

“When we do something, we raise the bar.”

Cast Iron House

Bridgestone Capital Assets CEO Jourdan Krauss, the developer of the Cast Iron House, says the Pritzker-Prize winning, traditional Japanese architect Shigeru Ban perfectly infused a contemporary aesthetic into their architecturally significant, historic building. With only 13 residents, the building does not have a lot of amenities but Krauss explains, “I wanted to build a hydrotherapy spa in this small boutique residence that would be a unique experience solely for the residents. We were not looking to compete with a massive spa experience or large gym.”

Krauss goes on to say, “New York City is a hectic, maddening city that moves at lightning speed. I wanted to create an experience for the residents that when they walk into the space, it is instant relaxation. Residents can get out of their busy lives, out of the hustle and bustle of New York and go relax in a small environment they feel is very private. The hammam can fit 10-12 people but really think it will be an experience for one person or a couple to relax in.”

Krauss says their hammam was designed in the basement vault of the building, which is beautifully illuminated by the light that filters through the sidewalk’s transparent glass from two storeys, 30 feet above. The hammam includes three different water experiences, a steam room and a sauna, a plunge pool, shower, and a special waterfall shower. “This whole combination of something special and very aesthetically very unique down in the vaults of the castle.”

The exquisite hamman at Jade Signature, developed by Fortune International Group and created by Pritzker Prize-winning architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, blends with a Tata Harper Spa, the first ever in Florida, to deliver all-organic wellness.

“Jade Signature is such a natural partner for us to open our very first Tata Harper Spa in Florida,” said Harper in a press statement. “We created a space that feels coastal casual yet chic with our special Tata Harper touch in every detail. We believe our clients should never have to compromise between health and results, natural and luxurious, or beauty and intelligence."

Rendered in vibrant wood and green accents and reserved for residents and guests, the spa carries Harper's hallmark line of products and treatments, including a range of rejuvenating facials and a liquid gold organic body massage, which elevate the hammam experience. A sauna, a steam room, a water therapy terrace, a relaxation zone and a manicure and pedicure lounge complete the private, state-of-the-art relaxation features at Jade Signature.

49 Chambers

The Moroccan developers of 49 Chambers created a hammam as a core component of the building. Cast in honed white Ariel marble with a lustrous coved ceiling, 49 Chambers’ hammam offers a relaxing escape. This contemporary reinterpretation of ancient bathing rituals can be enjoyed with the adjacent steam room and sauna. The amenity is directly connected to the building’s pool.

Julie Dannenberg from Hundred Stories PR said, “People are looking for different things than they were looking for five years ago. Being able to come home to place where you can put down your phone and computer and enter into an amenity space that will leave you completely relaxed and rejuvenated was very important to the developers as it’s in keeping with their tradition.”

111 Murray

Wellness amenities are a priority at 111 Murray Street, as they highlight their connection with nature, providing an immersive, restorative experience. The hammam is the centerpiece of the spa area with heated, sculpted marble beds and carved sinks, bringing a modern touch to the traditional Turkish bath. There are also treatment rooms, saunas and a hair salon enhance the whole experience.

It’s almost time for March Madness when everyone becomes a basketball fan.
