Japanese studio Nendo is unveiling a geometric zig-zag wooden bookshelf in Milan. The piece, entitled “Fold,” is created from interlocking wooden boards featuring varied recesses for books. Shelves can be accessed from both sides, making this bookshelf a functional statement piece.

Nendo comments to Dezeen, “Thanks to the superior craftsmanship of Conde House, a wood furniture manufacturer in Asahikawa in northern Japan, the joints appear seamless, as though single boards have been bent and interwoven like paper chains or a woven textile. It's virtually impossible to know, looking at the shelves, how the parts are connected."

The sleeves serve a dual purpose; they also provide reading material about the famous chain's coffee beans. Customers can exchange the book at the counter and keep the book's sleeve as a memento.

On Nendo's website, the design team explained; "The 'library' invites visitors to choose an espresso drink as they would a book, and verse themselves in espresso drinks as though quietly entering into a fictional world. Books and coffee are both important parts of everyday life, so we created a link between favorite books and favorite coffees."

 The pop-up shop was installed in the Omotesando neighborhood of Tokyo for the month of September.
