Alecia Beth Moore, known professionally by her stage name Pink, and husband, Casey Hart, have recently purchased a waterfront home in Malibu, California for $13.7 million. The “just completed,” contemporary space was formerly home to fellow musician Barry Manilow. The beach house was presented to Pink and Hart in April for $13.5 million, but the duo were prepared to offer $200,000 above asking price to secure the picturesque property.

Despite the seemingly optimistic purchase, Pink has surprisingly listed the Malibu beach house on the market a mere three months after acquiring it. It is currently unclear as to why she is bidding farewell to the residence bought in late June, but reports have portrayed the listing as a “flip.” Unfortunately, the new listing price of $15 million will offer Pink less than a 6% profit when broker’s fees are considered.

Built in 1976, the 7,000-square-foot mansion perfectly encapsulates the ideal attributes of a Malibu beach house. The interior highlights oak hardwood floors, a living room with gas fireplace, seating room with lighted tray ceiling, and dining room with a dazzling chandelier. Kanye West has become widely recognized and popularized in contemporary culture with his successful music career, fashion brand, eclectic character, and now with his newest real estate purchase. West once visited Naoshima, the Japanese “art island” designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Tadao Ando, and reportedly became enamored with the “life-changing” place. Now with his newest real estate deal, West has acquired his own artful residence with the purchase of a miraculous Malibu home.

In an off-market deal, West spent $57.3 million on his newfound Malibu residence. The part house, part art space was designed by Tadao Ando as one of his only homes in the United States. Last year, the property was listed for a whopping $75 million before being removed shortly after. While West was able to purchase the property at an immensely discounted rate, this sale still marks the second most expensive real estate purchase for a Malibu residence this year.

West’s newfound abode spans just under 5,700 square feet stretching from the road down to the beach. The vaguely Brutalist-inspired house features 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths. With masterful design, each level of the home serves a distinct purpose. The lowest floor presents three ensuite guest bedrooms. The middle level boasts the public areas of the home such as the living room, kitchen, and powder room. The top floor is exclusively reserved for the owner with a penthouse level bedroom suite and a rooftop terrace overlooking the oceanside.

Although photographs of the interior are not available online, Marmol Radziner, the L.A.-based architecture firm who built the house in collaboration with Ando, described the decor as minimalistic “yet warm." While the homes exterior does not offer a spacious yard or greenery, it presents access to the nearby picturesque beach and the space serves as its own unique approach to a seaside Malibu home.

Paris Hilton, the 2000s “it girl,” is now back in the limelight with her new Netflix reality show “Cooking with Paris.” The 40-year-old great-granddaughter of Conrad Hilton, the founder of Hilton Hotels, is offering a glimpse into her glamorized version of domesticity with cooking sessions alongside celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato. In the first episode of her series, Hilton expressed her desire to start a family soon after her upcoming wedding. Since 2019, Hilton has been romantically involved with author and entrepreneur Carter Reum. The pair got engaged in February with a custom emerald-cut engagement ring. Following an extravagant 10-outfit wedding ceremony, Hilton states, “I feel like I’ve been living like a 21-year-old for my entire life, and now I’m ready to move on.”

Evolving from her self-invented “Barbie airhead” persona, Hilton is prepared to settle down and lead a more simple lifestyle. The socialite and her new fiancé recently purchased an intended permanent residence together. Their newfound abode is a Malibu mansion in California previously owned by the late Universal Pictures former chairman Tom Pollock. The seaside property was sold for $8.4 million and Chris Cortazzo of Compass represented both the buyer and the seller in this deal.

Built in 1955, Hilton’s newly acquired abode boasts three bedrooms and three baths. The interior features an open floor plan for an expansive and airy atmosphere. On the first floor, the layout highlights a spacious living room, media room, and dining room with fireplace. The contemporary kitchen where she has filmed “Cooking with Paris” is equipped with top-of-the-line appliances, granite countertops, and sweeping ocean views. Decorative elements of the home comprise of stone tile floors and floor-to-ceiling windows spanning 3,000-square-feet for plentiful sunlight.

Upstairs, the primary suite includes wood floors, a cozy fireplace, a spa-like stone tiled bath, and two oceanfront balconies with a jacuzzi and lounge areas. Cindy Crawford was deemed one of the most recognized supermodels in the 1980s and 1990s gracing the cover of multiple magazines, walking runway shows, and serving as the face of fashion campaigns. She has since expanded into other ventures and in 1998, married nightlight industry businessman Rande Gerber. Gerber co-founded the tequila brand Casamigos with acclaimed actor George Clooney in 2013. In 2017, Crawford and Gerber purchased a mid-century modern home in Beverly Hills for $11.6 million through a trust. However, the two are now bidding farewell to their humble abode listing it on the market for an initial price $15.995 million last August. Since then, the price has been reduced to $14.75 million in May before recently securing a buyer. While the transaction has yet to appear in public records and the buyer’s identity remains anonymous, the home was last listed at $13.5 million.

Additionally, the celebrity couple have secured several other properties with two homes in Malibu, a vacation home in La Quinta’s Madison Club, and a cottage in Canada. Aside from Crawford and Gerber though, other notable names in the entertainment industry have inhabited their Beverly Hills abode. OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder and his wife, Genevieve, purchased the house in 2014 and spent almost two years restoring and expanding the property. Prior to their residence, the space belonged to film producer Gregory Goodman of “Jason Bourne” and “Captain Phillips.”

In 2019, Crawford spoke to Architectural Digest about her Beverly Hills home. “It's midcentury modern, so it's been fun putting it through our own filter. We make a lot of our upholstery,” she explains. “My husband is very, very picky about the cushion density and seat depth because he's taller.” However, Crawford also claims that Gerber “would sacrifice functionality for the look” in certain aspects of their home while her utmost priority lies in comfortability.

Built in 1959, the chic mid-century modern home spans 5,386 square feet and includes five bedrooms and 5.5 baths. The single-story space rests beyond gated walls in the posh Trousdale Estates neighborhood and has been completely renovated and restored during Tedder’s residence. The open floor plan presents four separate lounging areas partially separated by a dividing wall with sleek fireplace and wet bar. The sky-lit kitchen and adjacent dining area offer an atmosphere perfect for entertaining. The separate media room is equipped with sliding doors to provide privacy and distinct from the kitchen area. Stepping outside, the expansive exterior opens to a large swimming pool and spa with adjoining daybeds. The seating area is surrounded by a firepit, fruit trees, and art installations.

In April of 2018, Leonardo DiCaprio of “Titanic,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” added a newly purchased property to his already impressive real estate portfolio. The Hollywood A-lister acquired a lavish Los Feliz residence on Red Oak Drive from musician Moby through a trust. The sale was closed at $4.91 million, and the estate titled Red Oak Manor reportedly served as home to a member of DiCaprio’s family. Now, the Oscar-winning actor is bidding farewell to the marvelous manor listing it at $5.75 million.

As his primary residence, it is reported that DiCaprio calls Malibu his home. First purchasing a house there in 1998, he paid $23 million for a more expansive 1.8-acre spread in 2016. Other notable properties he’s acquired consist of Madonna’s former home he purchased in the 1990s, a mid-century modern space in Palm Springs, a chic New York City apartment, a compound property on the Sunset Strip, and an island in Belize. Although the star boasts several impressive estates, he is equally generous with his property assets. Earlier this year, DiCaprio’s purchased a Los Feliz home from “Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson for $7.1 million and gifted it to his mother. Additionally, he also paid $4.9 million for another Los Feliz home to gift his father.

DJ and producer, Diplo, has sold his Hollywood Hills villa for $2.8 million after five years in the residence.

Located in Los Angeles’s Beachwood Canyon under the Hollywood sign, the Contemporary-style home was built in 1926 with 2,524 square feet of space. The multi-level property holds four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms, which occupy their own floor. The penthouse suite takes up the entire top floor including a lofty office, a lounge space, and a massive bedroom with a spa-like bathroom and a private terrace that overlooks the city.

The lower levels of the home feature a living room with double-height ceilings and a black marble fireplace; a dining area that opens directly onto another covered terrace in the home; a kitchen with dark wood cabinetry and modern gray-and-white tiling. Also included in the property is an in-home recording studio with soundproofed walls and a listening lounge, a yoga retreat, and an outdoor meditation space.

Outside, there is a large entertaining space, providing tons of room for a dining table and a separate sitting area. The entertaining space is lit by string lights that run along the side of the home.

But what's interesting is we that are having a new group of people that are coming in. So it's not vacancies that we are seeing but rather a reshuffling, people leaving and coming... In this moment, it's more evident than ever that being an expert or specialist is a key takeaway... The broker to broker relationships are really important. That has been vital over the last couple of months."

Justin Alexander: "The overall sense is that people want to be anywhere they can be outdoors. If they can drive to the beach within 20 minutes, that's what they're looking for... The luxury real estate market in LA is not going to disappear, even with a pandemic... If someone comes to me and says they want to buy a house now, there is no waiting. Real estate is a top demand in LA... If you can be that little bit of light that gives someone perspective that things are going to stay strong in real estate, people will get through it. Inspire when you can."

Wendy Gragg: "The demand from LA is stronger than the supply we have available, and people are lining up and waiting... We had the highest number of pending sales in escrow in July ever, and that all is going to translate into closed sales, so I continue to anticipate seeing these kind of record-setting numbers... Santa Barbara is a small oceanfront community, so anything that a buyer is looking for, we have. You're within minutes to the beach and mountain hiking. We have wonderful weather and outdoor dining."

Dana Bambace: "We have been inundated with buyer demand since the end of April. We are a market where we would never see multiple offers or over asking, and now we are. The demand on the inventory is crazy.  I feel that we will continue to have demand through the Fall... When people found out that their kids were going to be remote learning, we got buyers coming in looking for compounds in Carmel. It has been a very interesting time, and I'm grateful. It's an community and I'm happy people want to choose it."

Anne-Britt Østlund: "I was telling my clients to just wait, that it would come back. I thought we had until the end of June, but it started right out the bat towards the end of May and we are breaking records. Total sales volume for this summer is up 92%... Because rates are so low, sellers are not accepting offers contingent on loans because they take too long. Even though the rates are so great, it's in the buyers' interest to offer cash... Buyers right now are the real deal. They are not wasting time."

We were afraid of what people's attitudes were going to be, but we did not lose one transaction because of COVID(-19)."

Joel Schemmel: "The higher end of the market is engaged. Those who have the ability to buy now are taking advantage... It's almost like the faucet is turned back on here (in Sarasota area). We have been incredibly busy for the last two to three weeks. All those people that were contemplating retirement or buying a second home in 1-5 years are all of a sudden want to talk... We went from a pretty good first quarter to almost a standstill at the end of March, from 50mph to zero, but we adapted to that."

Nine-digits. Not eight, not seven, but nine. Nine whole digits. Having represented our clients on four $100 Million+ sales over the last three years has been a major honor.

Jeff Hyland, President of Hilton & Hyland, believes LA continues to be the outright leader in the luxury real estate market. “Los Angeles has become the Blue-Chip Art of real estate," Hyland said, and Hilton & Hyland continues to lead the ultra-luxury market.

Maybe the most noteworthy of our nine-digit sales was the record-breaking sale of the Playboy Mansion. The Mansion was one of the most famous homes in the world as Hugh Hefner touted his estate as the premiere party destination for decades. Famous for a plethora of reasons, the sale of the Playboy Mansion in 2016 was exceptionally notable because it launched Los Angeles real estate into the nine-digit-tier for the first time. Drew Fenton and Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents on this record-breaking $100-million deal.

As the priciest home on Malibu’s famous Billionaire’s Beach, a $110-million off-market transaction set a new Los Angeles County record in 2018. Wrapped in resonant teak wood, the Richard Meier-designed beachfront home of the founder of the Hard Rock Café and Casinos offered seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and wrap-around balconies with incredible ocean views within its 8,000-square-feet of living space. Branden and Rayni Williams of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents.

Hilton & Hyland is synonymous with securing record sales and The Manor was no different. Made famous by Aaron and Candy Spelling, The Manor was originally sold by Rick Hilton and Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland in 2011 for $85-million. Rick Hilton and David Kramer of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer, Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone. The Manor sold again in the summer of 2019 for $119.75-million by Ecclestone who revamped the estate after her original purchase. As one of the most grand and private residences in the world, even larger than The White House, the 56,000-square-feet masterpiece laid on nearly five-acres of rare flat land that bordered the LA Country Club. A winding driveway lead to a circular motor court with a fountain and space for 100 cars. Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer.

Last, but certainly not least, was the $150-million sale of Chartwell (also known as The Beverly Hillbillies Estate) to Lachlan Murdoch, the executive chairman and CEO of the Fox Corporation.  The late Jerrold Perenchio, former Univision chairman and CEO, was able to take the original property and expand it over time into 10.39 incomparable acres in the heart of Bel-Air. The main residence was originally designed by Sumner Spaulding in 1930 with a timelessly elegant exterior of symmetrical cut limestone in the French Neoclassical style. Offering panoramic views from downtown to the Pacific Ocean, Chartwell showcased a rare combination of extensive grounds and powerful jetliner views. Rick Hilton, Jeff Hyland, Drew Fenton and Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents, while Drew Fenton alone represented the buyer.

As Los Angeles continues to set new records with an increase in nine-digit sales, Hilton & Hyland remains the leader in conducting the highest level of residential deals.

How does the building process change when a developer brings on an interior designer during the initial stages?

There are many advantages to hiring an interior designer at the initial stages of any project. Firstly, I believe that every member of the team should be on the same page, from the onset of a project. There are a lot of moving parts in construction and design and it is paramount that everybody has access to all of the information. This is a multi-year process and each member of the team is equally important. We need to work together to create an overall vision and a rhythm that is carried out until the end. The sooner the team can get organized and create a working relationship the better the outcome will be. This way everyone can hear the goals of the client and can work together collectively,  to bring that vision to life from beginning to the end.

What’s your favorite design element to incorporate into a brand new place?

One of my favorite elements to design is cabinetry. The cabinetry serves a major function in the home for storage and working spaces. However,  I feel that the style, layout and details of the cabinets are what drives the vibe of the home. I like to play with colors, texture, style and also the scale of the cabinets. There is a certain artistry that is involved with the design of them and doing it right can take a house from ordinary to extraordinary. There are so many components to be factored into this equation. There are wood choices, cabinet hardware, countertops and lighting that all need to speak to the architecture, the furniture and the feel of the home. Creating the right balance of materials and finishes can completely elevate a space and the feeling it brings. This is where I can really push my clients out of their comfort zone and do something a little fresh and a little different. It can a simple nuance that really sets their house apart from every other home they have seen.

How involved should a designer be during the building process?

Every designer is different. I like to be involved every step of the way. What may seem like a small decision is often a huge part of the overall aesthetic. People are paying us to execute a vision and to select all of the little details that go along with it. Anyone who has built a home can tell you that changes arise in the middle of construction, no matter how good the plans are. I want to be involved in the solution, no matter how early in the process it is. I am also heavily involved in the background selections. This is everything from windows and doors, to flooring, materials, layout, lighting, cabinetry and everything in between. On some of my bigger projects we have weekly job site meetings with the contractor, architect and client. Every week there are many decisions to be made and approvals that are required to keep on schedule. There are a million details in a house that lots of people are executing.  Small mistakes can fall through the cracks and add up to big mistakes. Sometimes my eye catches something that others may not notice. Since my job is to bring forward the final vision, I am looking at things from a different perspective than a sub reading plans or a contractor who has more responsibilities than anyone can comprehend. It’s so much easier to fix these things early on. Once the house is near complete, mistakes are easier to spot and harder to fix. It could be a wall sconces off by a half an inch. The next thing you know we’re ripping off drywall, moving electrical and patching and painting.  The construction is actually my favorite part of the building process. I love watching a space come together. I treat it like it’s my own home and I want to make sure that everyone’s questions are answered and that I am available when needed.

Does the layout of floorplans change if a designer is able to work with the developer in making the space more usable?

I have worked with a number of developers. The ones who hired me at the beginning were grateful for the input and changes to the floor plan. The ones who did not, regretted it. Designers don’t just make things look pretty. We make sure that form follows function and the space makes sense.  It’s imperative that we discuss with the developer who they are trying to sell this property to and who their clientele likely is. I also want to know how much they want to sell the house for. This way I can select appropriate finishes and make sure we have the right size rooms and the right amount of rooms for that price point and demographic. It is my job to bring my knowledge of space planning and design to the table and get my client the most bang for their buck. It is also my goal to get them excited about what we are building and create a space that they could see themselves living in. This process is stressful and there are a lot of moving parts but with a good team, it should also be a lot of fun.
