Guimar Urbina, founder of Guimar Urbina Interiors has over 15 years of experience and has cemented herself as one of the most notable modern interior designers in the South Florida market. The eclectic and international expanse of her work provides for an extremely tasteful and worldly perspective.

Besides her interior design business, she is also the co-founder of The Wallpaper Company a boutique wallpaper company specializing in unique designs. Headquartered in the beautiful City of Miami, The Wallpaper Company maintains a regional network of showrooms and sales representatives worldwide. Today, the company stocks more than 5000 wallcoverings including papers, vinyls, fabrics, naturals as well as many unique hand-crafted specialties.

Guimar recently debuted her second wallpaper collection with The Wallpaper Company at Boutique Design New York, the leading trade fair and conference for hospitality’s boutique and lifestyle design community. This year the fair returned to New York’s Javits Center November 14-15, 2021 for its 11th year and was co-located with ICFF (International Contemporary Furniture Fair) + WantedDesign Manhattan, as well as HX: The Hotel Experience Powered by AAHOA.

For the past week and a half, the design world has taken over New York City. With over 400 different exhibitions, installations, trade shows, panels, product launches, open studios, across all five boroughs, NYCxDESIGN ends today, May 23rd with its biggest event, the high-end furniture show, ICFF.

ICFF is only open to the public for one day, Wednesday. With over 900 exhibitors from all over the world, ICFF is considered North America’s platform for global design. The exhibit is full of displaying contemporary furniture, seating, carpet and flooring, lighting, outdoor furniture, materials, wall coverings, accessories, textiles, and kitchen and bath for residential and commercial interiors.

There are a dizzying amount of exhibits to visit and way too many to see in one day so we have highlighted a few standouts. At least this is a furniture show so you can claim to be trying out a sofa but instead just take a break to gather steam and keep going.

Mark Jupiter

Mark Jupiter’s custom-made furniture from reclaimed wood is not only beautiful, it is meaningful. Jupiter is a fourth generation NYC furniture designer and builder with a passion for bringing the furnishing dreams of his clients to life. Inspired by the craftsman of his family, from his great grandfather hammering out the original copper roofs of the city’s first skyscrapers, to the hand-carved furniture designed and built by his father, he is committed to continuing his family’s long standing tradition of building exquisite, handcrafted and one-of-a kind pieces designed to last generations. Jupiter says, “We are finding that people not only appreciate our designs and reasonable price points, but truly love the fact that they can have a completely custom piece of furniture made to fit their exact needs.”

With a showroom and shop in the heart of DUMBO Brooklyn, Jupiter’s award-winning custom designs are a special combination of refined elegance, repurposed industrial and sustainable sensibilities. Hand made right in the back of their studio, clients can not only view the many newly created pieces on the showroom floor but also peer behind the curtain into their work shop and see the fabrication process in motion.

An example of how cool Jupiter’s work is, he has a coffee table for sale called “Storm Tree Coffee Table.” It is made from a 500-year-old tree that was toppled after hurricane Irene in 2011 in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He points out that elm is approaching extinction in this country due to the spread of the Dutch Elm disease making this an incredibly rare piece.

The Inside

Applying wallpaper was once known as the one thing that could end all marriages. Peel and stick wallpaper removes that threat. And, beautiful peel and stick wallpaper is appealing to many. Christiane Lemieux, an interiors entrepreneur who started The Inside after selling her first company to Wayfair, is a design expert and an influencer in her own right. The Inside is showing for the first time at ICFF and taking the opportunity to launch a new irreverent '80s-inspired peel and stick wallpaper called “Melio.”

As part of the Collective Concept, Allied Maker, a handcrafted lighting manufacturer and New York design studio, designed and constructed a series of three large totem luminaires from stone, glass and wood. Totems are historically sacred objects serving as an emblem for a tribe. The goal of the presentation is to create emblems to material and to honor the connection between makers and materials. The concept aligns with the company’s mission to craft products in the USA from outstanding natural materials.

As a very charming side story, the company was started by Ryden Rizzo in 2012 as a garage woodworking studio tucked away on the North Shore of Long Island. Lanette and Ryden were neighbors at the time and were introduced a year after Allied Maker began. The two instantly fell in love and became a dynamic creative force.

The elegant wood totem is made of black walnut and brass and retails for $7,500. The stunning alabaster totem, which highlights the translucency of the stone, retails for $35,000.

Lindsey Adelman lives and works in New York City. She specialized in lighting design since 1996 and founded her eponymous studio in 2006. Her studio has since grown into a 40 employees with a recent location opening in Los Angeles.

The lighting collections blend industry and nature. Adelman loves to be challenged and seduced by the immaterial substance of light and is obsessed with creating forms that maximize light's sensual effect and highlight emptiness. Her work has been exhibited at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Design Miami, Nilufar Gallery, and BDDW. For many years, the studio has embraced a philanthropic mission supporting the Robin Hood Foundation to fight poverty in New York City. Adelman credits much of the studio’s current success to this desire to make an impact.

All things Nordic are super cool. Danish interior store Vipp has a “living laboratory” kitchen display, envisioned by Harry Nuriev of Crosby Studios, a Moscow-based interior design and architecture firm. Nuriev has been described by The New York Times as “The Man Designing Spaces for the Instagram Age.” This exhibit was also part of the Collective Concept exhibit.

Every year, the Annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair hosts a bevy of exhibitors coming from more than 30 nations in 11 categories, including furniture, kitchen, bath and lighting.

The 26th edition of ICFF—which ran from May 17 to 20—boasted an amalgam of some of the world's finest home decor creations, from artful wallpaper, sinks and light fixtures, to innovative loungers, tables and sleepers. Located at the glass-encased Jacob Javits Center, it was nothing short of phenomenal, ultimately attracting 31,421 attendees with its 629 exhibitors.

See below for some of the Fair's highlights, and catch a glimpse of my personal favorite designs in lighting and seating.

Kenneth Cobonpue's Blossom Chair

Handcrafted and made of microfiber stitched over a resin top with a steel base, the Filipino designer's eye-catching chair is just as cozy as it looks.

Inspired by a blooming flower, the plush lounge—available in a multitude of colors including cobalt blue, muted red and lime green (pictured above)—is sculpted by hundreds of fine-running stitches radiating from its center—a creative technique that produces a subtle textural feel.

Gabriel Scott's Modular Lighting

Gabriel Kakon and Scott Richler's Welles lighting collection is über chic and modern, touting a string of futuristic, angular fixtures that are highly customizable.

Hand-assembled in Canada, the pieces come in a few mix-and-matchable finishes (its interior is available in Blackened Steel and Matte White, while its outer shell comes in Polished Copper, Satin Brass, and Polished Nickel).

Peter Glassford's Collage Murals

A 3D wallpaper of sorts, Glassford's creation is comprised of random pieces of wood thoughtfully pieced together and positioned to create a stunning work of art that gives off a playful, rustic vibe.

Alexander Gendell's Folditure Tables and Chairs

For those of you who know the pain of sacrificing precious square footage for the sake of living in a great location, designer Alexander Gendell's highly innovative tabletops and seaters are awesome space savers, as they can fold up into super thin, almost 2D-like pieces (note that the back wall depicted in the photo is covered with a layer of folded up versions of the chairs displayed). Amazingly, a set of six chairs ships snugly in a box no wider than five or six inches.

Lasvit's Lighting

Winner of this year's ICFF Editors Awards for Best Lighting, Lasvit—a Czech Republic-based firm—creates remarkable bespoke glass installations, to say the least. Conceptualized by René Roubíček, one of the company's fantastic designers, the fragile yet powerful piece featured above—entitled, "And why not!"—references Roubíček's passionate, lifelong experimentation with glass.

Thomas Riley Studio's Versailles Collection

The opulent grandeur of Thomas Riley Studio's marvelous Versailles Collection—designed by Chad Jensen—is simply breathtaking.

Among its magnificent pieces were "Château & Parc," a rug that depicts a 17th Century aerial plan of Versailles. Created in collaboration with the famed manufacturer Orley Shabahang, it was inspired by the meticulously hand-drawn maps and architectural blueprints of the storied locale.

The two matching tables featured above—"Silhouette de la Garonne" and "Silhouette de la Nymphe"—were inspired by classical works of art, though they embody an elegantly modern artistic interpretation of the fabled city.

Didn't get a chance to stop by this year's fabulous fair? Don't fret: the grand event will officially be back at the Javits Center next spring, from May 16 to 19.

Last night, Haute Living joined a lively crowd of design exhibitors and enthusiasts at Neuehouse in Gramercy.

The event, hosted by Metropolis Magazine's editorial director Paul Makovsky in a collaboration with the Norwegian Consulate in New York, was held to celebrate all the Norwegian design events going on during this year's International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

We admired the bevy of innovative Nordic pieces set against the venue's sophisticated backdrop, as we sipped on a specially-made Norwegian cocktail and nibbled on cupcakes and caviar-topped hors d'oeuvres.

Caroline Olsson's "Peacock" and StokkeAustad's "Ash Bowls"

The second annual NYCxDesign festival––a citywide affair taking place later this month––will cover everything from architecture and fashion, to graphic, interior, and urban design.

The festival will kick off on May 8 with Collective 2, a showcase featuring contemporary and 20th century design from both new and established designers. The following day marks the beginning of this year's Frieze Art Fair, which shall exhibit over 190 of the world's most renowned galleries. Local and foreign professionals alike––from Brooklyn to London, and everywhere in between––will flock to the city in honor of the phenomenal affair, and for the first time the event will show Offsite: a satellite exhibition organized by the online publication Sight Unseen that will showcase a handful of independent and innovative brands.

The heart of the Festival is of course the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF, for short). The 26th edition of the world-famous, four-day event will feature over 500 exhibitors from all facets of interior design and home decor.
