Ellen DeGeneres and her wife, Portia de Rossi have officially sold their Beverly Hills home for $47 million. The home was put on the market a month ago for an asking price of $53.5 million, yet the couple still managed to make a decent profit.

DeGeneres and de Rossi purchased their Beverly Hills home from Maroon 5’s lead singer Adam Levine back in May 2019 for $42 million. The 10,376-square-foot property has undergone substantial renovations while under the ownership of DeGeneres and De Rossi, on top of $7 million worth of upgrades made by Levine and his wife, Behati Prinsloo. The traditional-ivy covered home features five bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, with plenty of modern touches throughout the residence.

The property has a stainless-steel-covered kitchen, a sunlit two-story front foyer which leads into a 50-foot living room with a stone fireplace and white plaster walls, a family room, and a formal dining room with a bar. The upstairs suite spans 2,000 square feet with a private terrace and en suite bathroom. Other amenities include a resort-like pool with a spa, an outdoor kitchen with a pizza oven, a fire pit, a sunken tennis court, a paneled library, a gym and a screening room. The property also has a guest house.

DeGeneres and de Rossi are notorious for their real estate portfolio. The couple, who has owned over 20 homes throughout the years, are known for flipping their real estate purchases and reselling them shortly after. DeGeneres’ interest in real estate was inspired by her father and her childhood. Growing up, her family often rented properties but never actually owned a home. This inspired DeGeneres to buy her own property when she was finally able to afford it. Together, the couple share a passion for architecture and decorating, opting to try new styles and aesthetics with each property added to their portfolio.

Ellen DeGeneres is not shy about her passion for house flipping. It's "really a genuine passion of mine, not just a business venture," she told PEOPLE in 2015.

That passion has led Ellen and her wife Portia de Rossi to purchase and re-design over a dozen homes in the last twenty years.

Ellen's 2015 book, Home, showcases her interior design work over the years. Her love of homes began young when she used to wander through listings with her real estate agent Mother. She told QVC, “I got to see how other people decorated, and for whatever reason, I was drawn to that."

There's a reason insiders refer to Ellen as "The real estate queen of Hollywood." In 2005, Ellen bought a 4,000 square foot, 5 bedroom home in the Hollywood Hills for $6.5 million, she packaged it with another nearby property and sold it for $10 million in 2007. Then, she purchased the same property again in 2014 for $8.75 million–briefly rented it to Nick Jonas, then sold it in an off-market deal for $9.9 million. As if netting 3.5 million the first time wasn't enough, Ellen added another million-plus in profit after selling it a second time.

One of Ellen's most rustic and romantic homes is “The Villa” a Santa Barbara terra-cotta and tile manse that looks like it came straight out of a vineyard in Tuscany. Designed in 1930 by architect Wallace Frost (who spent time living in Italy) the 10,500-square-foot estate has 6 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, 9 fireplaces a tennis court, pool, and guest villa. Ellen and Portia purchased the 16-plus acre property in 2013 for $28.8 million and sold it this month for $34 million– clearing just over $5 million.

Ellen's designs always fit the style of the home she's selling, but one furniture piece that appears prominently in many her homes is the Cité side chair by Prouvé.

Jeremy Renner

The Avengers and The Hurt Locker star formed a partnership with Kristoffer Winters to buy and sell over two dozen Southern California homes.

When it comes to re-designing a space, Jeremy makes it clear this is more than a hobby for him, "you have to be all in. There's no half-assing it," he told Robb Report in 2016.

Jeremy loves the problem-solving aspect of working within a budget and meeting time constraints to create something beautiful and profitable.

He advises making a home clean and inviting to whoever might want to buy it, by using neutral colors on walls and in furniture selection. Try using throw pillows and a painting on the wall to add a pop of color.

In the early days, Renner lived in most of the homes he was working on. He bought his first mid-century-modern Nichols Canyon house for $640,000 in 2002. He sold that one in a few months for $900,000. Now, he and Winters have graduated into bigger renovation projects with massive paydays.

Those early sales seem like chump change compared to one of Renner's biggest flips. He purchased a drab home in Holmby Hills in 2010 for $7 million. After some serious beautification–Jeremy sold that property for $24 million in 2013. That sale put more money in Jeremy's pocket than playing a Marvel superhero.

Vanilla Ice

Rob Van Winkle, who went by the well-known moniker "Vanilla Ice" during his early '90s rap career has been netting big profits as a house flipper for the past two decades.

The real estate entrepreneur has hosted the DIY networks successful series The Vanilla Ice Project for seven seasons.

Rob focuses on the Palm Beach Florida market–an area he knows extremely well. “A lot of the areas that got hit hard during the housing downturn are some of the first areas to come back out of it because they were desirable then and they're desirable now," he told CNBC in 2012.

One project that Vanilla Ice seems especially proud of is the completely renovated and custom designed estate he calls, "The Dream House." The deepwater estate has the latest technology throughout, a private beach, and Jet-Ski lift off the dock. It sold last year for $3.8 million. As Rob would say, that's, "nice, nice, baby!"

Among the features home buyers look for, Rob mentions feng shui, vaulted ceilings, eight-foot doors, and lush backyards on properties close to airports, restaurants, and shopping.

It takes experience and patience to become a successful house flipper. Getting to know an area, investing in attractive interior design, and knowing what buyers are looking for are a few of the first steps towards flipping right.

Perry bought the 17,475-square-foot residence in the private Mulholland Estates in Beverly Hills for $14.5 million in August of 2016, and, months later, put it back on the market for $17 million, purportedly without having spent single night in the home.

Evoking a modern public building, the estate was built in 1992 for philanthropist Alfred Mann, who lived in it until his passing in 2016. Following Mann’s death, the 10-bedroom, 11-bathroom abode was listed for $30 million, before undergoing a streak of price reductions.

Resting on nearly 5 acres, the mansion provides the perfect setting for Hollywood-style entertainment with its two stone-lined pools, an outdoor dining terrace, a tennis court and a 30-vehicle motor court.

Williams, who is a 11-time Grammy winner, also owns the spectacular Skyline Residence in Laurel Canyon and a waterfront house in Virginia. Perry, in the meantime, is known for his house-flipping deals, which made headlines in 2016 for the record sale of his Atlanta mansion.

According to the deed filed with the county and accessed on Property Shark, Mr. DiCaprio closed on the home in March using a trust. He has numerous high-end properties, most of which are rented out, in the Los Angeles area. Seller Moby took two years to rehab the 4,644-square-foot, 1920’s manor-style home which is referred by listing agents, Patrick Martin and Gwen Banta of Sotheby’s International Realty as “Moby’s Los Feliz Masterpiece.” The rehab, while well done, is nothing spectacular. White walls, a white kitchen and light wood flooring are offset by stonework and bean pool outside. The property sits on a quarter-acre lot in hillside neighborhood of Central L.A. behind a thicket of trees and hedges.

DiCaprio has proven to be a voracious real estate investor and his properties range from high-end New York condos to suburban LA area family homes. The property was on the market for only a few weeks when he snapped it up in March. Moby paid $3.4 million for it two year prior. According to the Los Angeles Times, the actor purchased the home for a family member and won’t be living there. Lucky family member.

DiCaprio seems to collect homes like he does supermodels’ phone numbers. A few of the prized pieces in his property portfolio include a Hollywood Hills compound he purchased in 1994 for $4 million (it’s actually two side-by-side properties, one of which was purchased from Madonna for $2 million) and which he has rented to actor pals.

A beach bungalow was purchased in 1998 for $1,775,000. The modest three-bedroom two-bath home with 1,765 square feet also has a deck, hot tub and views of the Pacific. The actor listed the home in September for $10.95 million before trimming a million off the price and then taking it off the market deciding to use it as a rental.

He also owns a Battery Park condo, which he first purchased in 2008 for $3.67 million and then the unit next door in 2014 for $8 million. "Riverhouse, One Rockefeller Park," 2 River Terrace in Battery Park is a building filled with eco- and health-conscious amenities. Filtered water, air, a yoga studio and more have seen fellow celebs like Tyra Banks and Oliver Stone take up residence.

The 43 year-old A-Lister also has a 7.022 square-foot Palm Springs pad, which he purchased in 2014 for $5.2 million. It’s old-school Hollywood glam: Built in 1964, the six-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom spread had a guesthouse, pool, gym, tennis court and mountain views. It’s currently a vacation rental priced at $3,750/night.

By far the most impressive piece of real estate in the DiCaprio portfolio is one of his cheapest. He purchased an island near Belize in 2005 for $1.75 million. Blackadore Caye is being developed along with partner Paul Scialla, into an eco-friendly resort and is due to open this year. Initial renderings show it to be top-notch luxury. But the place will serve more than Michelin-rated food. The idea in buying the island was to preserve its ecosystem.

"We don’t want to just do less harm or even have zero impact, but to actually help heal the island, to make it better than before," Scialla told the New York Times. A worthy cause, at a lofty price.

The latest star to do so is actress Gabrielle Union and hubby Dwayne Wade. Their upcoming TV Special, All-Star Flip aired on April 12th. It follows the couple as they attempt to turn drab to fab in Florida with an outdated ranch home. The difference with this big-hearted couple as opposed to other flippers is that all proceeds are going to charity.

One of the best known flippers is Ellen DeGeneres. Passionate for interior design (she even had her own show on HGTV (Ellen’s Design Challenge), the comedian/talk show host has been flipping luxury LA pads for years. One of her most successful was in July 2014 when  she sold LA’s Brody House (built in 1949, the home has a history of cutting edge design and philanthropy) to Napster founder, Sean Parker for $55 million, netting herself a $15-million payday.

In total Ellen bought and sold 7 properties in a decade from 2006 to 2016. Her famous friends have come in handy as buyers (Ryan Seacrest) and renters (Nick Jonas). In just over that time she’s made a net profit of $3.4 million. Sure, A-list celebs earn more for film roles and endorsements but as walking-about money, it’s not bad.

Another well known flipper is actor Jeremy Renner. He and business partner Kristoffer Winters have been flipping homes for years (it’s up to 20 at this point — homes not years). Some of his earlier flips were well documented in website The Wrap. Renner revealed at one point he was making more money flipping houses than acting. The actor said that being amongst the sheetrock, studs and power tools “keeps me grounded.” Most recently Renner has flipped his mother’s house at 201 Elmwood Court in Modesto, Ca., which was purchased in 2007, 7 years after the actor started flipping homes to supplement his income. Renner was hands-on with his mom, Valerie Clearley’s house. She plans to move to LA to join him and her grand kids. Wonder if Renner has a flip in mind to pass on to her there?

It makes sense that creative types would get into house flipping. Whether creating music or mosaic backsplashes, Grammy winner Beck got in on the house-flipping fever when he purchased and restored a home in Brentwood, LA in 2016. He listed it for $3.75 million, over $700,000 more than he purchased it for.

Sharon Osborne, talk show host and reality TV star, has always been an astute business woman, so of course, she’s a serial house flipper, having remodeled dozens of homes in LA. Her one-hour TV Special was called Sharon Flipping Osborne. “I’m damn good at it,” she said of her house flipping skills on the show. We wouldn’t doubt it.
