With incredible natural beauty that extends from the mountains to the high desert, Central Oregon is a region like no other. For those interested in experiencing superior outdoor recreation while living a luxurious lifestyle, Central Oregon is the place to call home.

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

Tab Howard, LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate’s luxury estate specialist in Bend, Oregon, recently relocated to Bend with his family after falling in love with the area. “There is no better place to be if you love the outdoor lifestyle,” says Howard, a native of Boston. “When you take the combination of activities - hiking, skiing, camping, fishing - and add to it the incredible high-end real estate opportunities, you have a recipe for really living the good life.”

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

Central Oregon has piqued the interest of luxury buyers from across the country and the globe who are looking to enjoy the region’s top golf courses, ranches, ski resorts, rivers, and other outdoor recreational activities. An outstanding array of farm-to-table dining, craft beers and arts and cultural events round out the opportunities drawing high-net-worth buyers to Bend and its surrounding communities.

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

Terrebonne, located 25 miles north of Bend, is one such community that has received much-deserved attention recently. Adjacent to Smith Rock State Park, considered the cradle of American rock climbing, Terrebonne is a small community that boasts incredible recreation, a mild Mediterranean-like climate, and sprawling acreage properties.

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

“The 40-acre estate on NW Smith Rock Way is a perfect example of Central Oregon luxury,” says Howard. This unique estate is zoned for farming but can serve as so much more. It is irrigation ready for 30 acres, has a 7,000 sq. ft renovated barn, a beautifully remodeled 2,058 sq. ft., three bedroom home, a pond with a swim-up island, stunning mountain and territorial views, and more. “The possibilities are endless,” says Howard. This is an ideal real property for a buyer looking for a vacation or second home, a rental property, an equestrian, farm or ranch estate, or to create a beautiful wedding venue.

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

“This Terrebonne estate is an opportunity to create a family legacy that will last for many generations,” adds Howard.

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

“Central Oregon is a world-class destination that offers natural beauty and a lifestyle that is second-to-none for those looking to enjoy the finer things in life,” says Howard. “Every season offers new activities and new places to explore. Park City, Tahoe and Aspen have nothing on Bend!”

Photo Credit: LUXE Christie’s International Real Estate

Twin Oak Ranch is an extraordinarily private and secure ranch just minutes to downtown Los Olivos, nestled within a grassy valley abundant with wildlife and fresh air. Exquisitely built, the Italian-style Villa is a work of art that melds seamlessly with Santa Ynez Valley’s hypnotic oak-studded hills, creating 254+/- acres of pristine sanctuary. The residence is simply magnificent, yet intimately personal, superbly crafted of natural stone, Columbian hardwood, marble, and imported tile. Guests will love their lavishly-appointed quarters as you entertain sumptuously in one of many artfully-designed spaces, each with its own fireplace and unique ambience. Italian sculpture and tilework crafted from the experience of the ranch hang like jewelry around the home. The arched hand-crafted windows and doors in the tower bring in light and beauty. Windows and doors that open on both sides line a long corridor connecting a three-bedroom guest house. Each zone of the home has another purpose keeping the intimate living space contained but easily opened with more room for entertaining or guests. Indoor/Outdoor living opens wide into patios, covered balconies, covered and open outdoor fireplace settings and a swimming pool next to a large tiled steam sauna and a spa.

The Valley

In the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley, Rancho la Zaca and Oak Savanna Vineyard nestle amid a landscape of rolling hills, ranches, and vineyards, with swaths of poppy-studded pasture and lupine covered meadow. Carved from a royal Spanish land grant and embodying a mythic old California lifestyle, this remarkable estate stands against a backdrop of stately mountains, and azure skies, yet is but 40 minutes’ drive from Santa Barbara, two hours from Los Angeles, and four hours from San Francisco.

With its open vistas, coastal influences, and excellent land values, it is no wonder the Santa Ynez Valley is rapidly being discovered by savvy investors, Silicon Valley denizens, and the Hollywood celebrity set alike. Local schools are among the best in the state, and the county’s Cottage Hospital Network is among the nation’s finest. The area is known of course for its winemaking, but also for its love of horses, offering superb veterinary care and top training facilities in all equestrian disciplines. Hiking, cycling, golf, tennis, farmers’ markets, fine dining, and an active arts community complete an already brimming and beautiful picture.

The Ranch

Unparalleled in the Santa Ynez Valley, the 400+/- acre Rancho la Zaca is enviously located along the storied Foxen Canyon wine trail.

The main residence is a stunning 8,000+/- square-foot, five-bedroom contemporary masterpiece designed by renowned American architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen and built for the late actor James Garner and his wife. Since acquiring the ranch in 2000, the current owners have enhanced the property considerably with a world-class sporting clay and shooting range; a well-stocked and picturesquely landscaped pond with dock; a romantic grove of mature olive trees; and a modern six-stall horse barn and regulation-sized rodeo arena, complete with cattle shoots and spectator stands. A lovely old picnic area is shaded by massive oaks and lit at night with hundreds of twinkling lights. And finally, miles of hiking and riding trails wind their ways around this sybaritic sportsman’s and nature-lover’s paradise.

The Houses

The main house stands at the end of a long and gracefully curving drive, where a gravel motor court welcomes visitors and provides ample parking. An arbored walkway bordered by juniper topiaries leads to a capacious entry flanked by exterior gardens. From there a glass-walled passage opens to a dramatic, light-filled great room with soaring 25-foot ceilings and fireplaces at left and right. Inspired by the wooden cobblestoned streets of Old Havana, the current owners installed a wooden tile floor, and added wooden mantelpieces atop the rustic limestone hearth surrounds. Living and dining spaces in the room accommodate cozy evenings for two as well as festive gatherings for 20 or more.

From the great room, handsome glass doors lead to a heated, covered patio overlooking an infinity-edge pool and endless views of the vineyards and mountains beyond. A large surrounding porch offers several al fresco seating and dining areas, a firepit, and a pool house with full bath, two separate showers, and changing room.

The master suite occupies the east wing of the house and comprises large separate baths, closets, and dressing areas. An intimate but spacious separate sitting room looks onto a fenced garden on one side, and on the other a private deck bordering the olive grove. Upstairs, via separate staircases, are an office with panoramic views and a bedroom with ensuite bath that can also serve as an office.

Three additional upper-level bedrooms have ensuite baths, built-in cabinets and closets, and are each accessed by separate staircases to afford the utmost privacy. This construction is a famous signature of Architect Jacobsen.

The large kitchen is fully equipped with the highest commercial grade appliances and copious storage for supplies and tableware. The thoughtful, professionally designed set-up is suitable for the most demanding caterer or the most relaxed home cook. An ample butler’s pantry contains a large wine cooler, wet bar, and breakfast nook with stylish banquette seating, the perfect sunny spot to watch the evening news or visit with family and friends over morning coffee.

A service hall from the kitchen contains more cabinetry, an additional sink and dishwasher, and leads to a large laundry room. Rounding out the main level is an office with built-in desk, shelves, and filing drawers, and a separate room for supplies, printer, shredder, and other office equipment.

A lower level contains a temperature-controlled wine cellar, mirrored gym and workout room, and a large storage room.

Two garages house two cars each, plus additional storage areas, and an attached outbuilding holds sporting equipment, bicycles, and waste receptacles.

Elsewhere on the property is a large utility barn, a 4-bedroom Ranch Manager’s house and a 3-bedroom Vineyard Manager’s house.

The Vineyard

Planted in the 1970s, the Oak Savanna Vineyard is one of the oldest in Santa Barbara County. Originally planted in all Chardonnay, varietals have since been expanded to include Syrah, Sangiovese, and Tempranillo. For decades, winemakers near and far have proudly and consistently produced exemplary wines from the superior fruit of Oak Savanna. And while all vineyards are arguably beautiful, the Oak Savanna is uniquely so, distinguished by its ochre-colored limestone end posts. The handsome, rough-hewn posts were carted in from Kansas, where a lack of wood for fencing gave rise to this quarried variety, now ingeniously deployed at Oak Savanna.

The Foxen Canyon Story

An integral part of the legendary Santa Barbara County wine country, the Foxen Canyon Road is home to more than two dozen vineyards and wineries, producing some of our area’s most coveted fruit and finest wines. Winding its way through vineyards, oak studded hills, and lofty mesas with open vistas and see-forever views, the road has long been a favorite with cyclists and Sunday drivers alike. An area of astonishing topographic diversity, pine-topped distant mountains tower over gently rolling pasture land where cattle and horses graze. In spring the hills turn bright yellow with wild mustard, vibrant orange with poppies, and silvery blue with lupine. In summer when the hills turn golden, the verdant foliage of the vineyards punctuates the landscape and heralds the bounty of the harvest to come. Foxen Canyon is itself the quintessential California landscape, truly a special place.

History of the Zaca Spanish Land Grant

Awarded by the Spanish Crown in 1838, the original Zaca land grant is believed to be the first in the Santa Ynez Valley. The grant was small by comparison, at about 4,400 acres, taking its name perhaps from an Aztec word that roughly translates as “peaceful place.” But no one knows for sure, alas. Around the turn of the 19th century, the land was bisected along the boundary formed by the old stage coach route, then referred to in Spanish as the camino. The camino later became Foxen Canyon, named for a distinguished local military officer whose family resides there to this day. In the 1970s, the property was again divided, this time into four parcels, one of which became the 400-acre Rancho la Zaca. The actor James Garner purchased the property in the 1990s and commissioned visionary American architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen to design the current residence, a bold contemporary statement that is as respectful of the surrounding landscape as it is welcoming to all who enter it.

OVERVIEW

There is magic abound. After all, this is Montecito, one of the most prestigious communities in the world. It’s Birnam Wood, a gated and guarded sanctuary cherished as the community’s premier private enclave. It’s a spectacular new residence overlooking the enclave’s world-class golf course. The French country-style Montecito home in Birnam Wood, bordering the 12th fairway and green, is a special abode where quality craftsmanship and the finest materials – both old and new – have been brought together.

The home, completed in 2019, is the result of a significant collaboration. Noted architect Robert Senn AIA, gifted designer Michael Hurst, accomplished landscape architect Kris Kimpel, and visionary builder Becker Studios have created a showcase of relaxed luxury.

A hand-laid cobblestone driveway, antique French fountain, welcoming portico, emerald lawn and massive oak introduce the over 4,000 sq. ft. single-level residence. Within, there are antique French and Italian doors and exposed wood beams, wide-plank French oak floors, and, under the towering vaulted ceiling of the Great Room, a fireplace – one of four in the home -- is embraced by its substantial hand-carved antique French limestone surround.

Throughout the French country-style Montecito home, Old World French country elegance is complemented and tastefully juxtaposed with 21st-century conveniences and décor. Modern features include custom lighting and cabinetry, Perrin and Rowe bathroom fixtures, state-of-the-art kitchen appliances and security alarm, whole-house Sonos, dual-zone heating and air conditioning and a spacious 3-car garage.

In any extraordinary dwelling, location, design, architecture, amenities, workmanship and materials must combine to create one essential intangible: ambiance. Here, in this French country-style Montecito home, casual sophistication is enhanced by an air of spaciousness and light thanks to numerous oversize windows and French doors, lofty vaulted ceilings, an open floorplan and easy flow of indoor and outdoor.

GREAT ROOM | VERANDA

The space is vast yet somehow intimate; defined by its soaring vaulted ceiling punctuated by nearly century-old hand-hewn beams. This is the Great Room: an impressive space for relaxing and dining with friends and family. There are the wide planks of its richly stained French oak floor, and clean white walls beckoning a display of art or simply the soft glow of Montecito sunlight.

Sunlight, twilight, moonlight. All are welcomed through three sets of oversize French doors, and multi-pane and dormer windows. Anchoring the space, a dramatic fireplace, its prominence bestowed by a hand-carved antique French limestone surround flanked by a pair of striking wrought-iron sconces.

Beyond, through those French doors, an expansive veranda awaits and overlooks lush landscaping and the adjacent fairway of the Birnam Wood Golf Club. Intimate seating areas and a stone fireplace make this a perfect place for evening repasts and conviviality.

CULINARY CENTER

The heart of any well-loved home is its culinary center. It’s a place where family and guests can find nourishment of body and soul. That’s true of this exceptional abode’s culinary center as well. Spacious enough for small gatherings, it combines a large gourmet kitchen with an inviting sitting area. A warming fireplace with its roomy curved hearth provides cozy comfort on cool Montecito evenings. French doors open to a small terrace and steps to a large entertaining or play area under a towering oak.

The kitchen is a chef’s or caterer’s dream with its top-of-the-line Wolf and Sub-zero appliances, and a versatile double-wide center island. There’s an abundance of custom cabinetry, Crema limestone countertops, hand-painted tile backsplashes and ROHL fixtures.

MASTER SUITE | GUEST ROOMS

A touch of elegance and a dash of practicality are expertly united in this serene sanctuary. Under a beautiful chandelier and delicate tray ceiling, the master bedroom basks in the glow of its imported carved limestone fireplace and the radiance bestowed by a large bay window. Underfoot, the wide plank French oak floor provides that dash of practicality. Luxury prevails in the en suite bath.

There is a dramatic glassed-in shower, and a generous soaking tub placed to maximize the lovely view through a triptych of multi-pane windows. Custom cabinetry embraces dual sinks and hosts Calacatta marble countertops. Fixtures are by Perrin and Rowe. Nearby, a room-size walk-in closet awaits.

Two guestrooms have baths en suite, and offer enchanting views and utmost comfort for even the most discerning guests or family. A garden view office or den provides a private entrance and bath. Its convenience to all common areas makes it an excellent option as a fourth bedroom suite if desired.

GROUNDS | COMMUNITY AMENITIES

To own a home in Birnam Wood, set amidst towering oaks, a verdant lawn and impeccable landscaping, is certainly a privilege. Indeed, there are few settings more picturesque than this coveted spot neighboring the acclaimed links at the world-class Birnam Wood Golf Club.

Though seemingly far from the madding crowd, this fabulous residence is comfortably close to nearly endless shopping, services, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Montecito’s charming Upper Village, perhaps two minutes by car beyond the Birnam Wood gates, hosts shops, fine and family dining, and practical services. Hiking, biking, swimming, surfing and sailing await within minutes.

The Santa Barbara Airport accommodates commercial and personal aircraft, while the Los Angeles International Airport is a mere 90-minute commute.

Got Kids? I have activity suggestions.

“I’m bored” isn’t a phrase you will hear around this island! If you do hear that dreaded phrase, a quick trip to our favorite spots below will provide the necessary reset you or your kids might need to shake up your island vacation! A lot has been written about kids and activities to do (check out some of our Fisher Real Estate blogs) but when a client asked, “Are you sure there is enough for us to do past the pool,” I decided to write this list with a bit of a twist providing an Islander’s point of view so no one can say “I am bored!”

The Juice Bar is a great spot to start

What doesn’t wash away the tears or the boredom (at any age!) like a magical scoop of ice cream, lore and legends? There is no way to do this than have the full Juice Bar Experience! Now there are other great ice-cream making establishments and you should visit them all while here.

Once you get the comfort food going, lets rattle off the list of activities that you or the kids can choose from. Here we answer what is there to do for the kids – “We don’t just want to lie around the beach or pool all day?” There are so many activities to do on this faraway island that it really is unbelievable. Once you get past the pool days and beach waves, here are a few of my favorites.

Rent bikes and explore

Rent bikes, grab a picnic lunch at Something Natural, the Culinary Center, the Green, or 45 Surfside and ride to somewhere that has a dirt road. Ride to the bottom, jump in the ocean, have lunch and go explore some more! On that bike ride, pick some berries, visit the moors, watch the kite boarders, get lost, go check out a pond or even the forest. Yes, did you know we have a forest here on ACK?

Insider Track

Rent a fat-tire bike and see how many days it takes you to ride around the island. Did you know there is a running race that does this called The Rock Run? Sounds fun but too many blisters and for a non-runner like me, bike riding definitely seems the way to go!

Get me some Lobstah

Head to any of our great fish mongers and pick your lobsters right from the tank. Bring home cooked or ready to be cooked and use that outdoor space for an awesome messy dinner that requires minimal cleanup and will be the summer dinner the kids remember most – what’s better than lobster and s’mores!

Insider Track

A family that cooks together…..usually ends up with a big messy kitchen so why not go to the Nantucket Culinary Center and have Chef Greg keep the peace with a family cooking class. Each person can pick a dish or make teams for a culinary showdown. When the body and mind have had too much sun, this might be a fun morning, afternoon or evening activity!

Oh wait…another way to do it!

Now you can go to the fish market, you can call Nantucket Clambake Company and both will be awesome, but none will be as simple, easy and memorable as the following. Head out to Bartletts Farm and order up your lobster dinner – they come complete with lobster, corn, red bliss potatoes and steamers! Add a baguette, bottle of wine and any of their luscious desserts and you won’t have a reason to leave the beach! Head off the beaten path of Ladies Beach and drive as close to the beach as allowed. Once the goods are on the beach engage in a game of pass, corn hole, spikeball, or just let the kids frolic in the white water and surf. After a hearty dose of activity, dive in to lobster, butter, wine, baguette and slow down the pace of life while you enjoy some of mother ocean’s bounty and watch as the sun slowly travels to the horizon changing into magical hues eventually fading into the ocean. As the sun fades away, drink in the moment of happiness and appreciate the minute because after everything else, this memory will never fade!

Water sports for the apt

Take the kids down to Jetties Beach and the Nantucket Community Sailing outpost and go kayaking, sailing, paddle boarding, windsurfing (lessons available) or jump over to the Sandbar retail store and grab some skimboards. Watch as the kids do this activity with ease and sometimes grace……but don’t try it unless you are skillfully adept adult. Doing otherwise could treat you to a nice trip to our hospital facilities, of course after stopping back at the sandbar for an adult beverage!

Insider Track

Head out to Pocomo and have the bravest family member try kite boarding. It’s awesome for everyone, the rider and the team. Kitetucket does an awesome job with kids and who wouldn’t want to fly through the air? Try You’re Up water sports for the more traditionalist tubing and waterskiing and I think even parasailing!

Oh wait…another way to do it!

This one is a little more involved but you will never forget the experience. Rent a Paddle board from the beach at Washington St Extension and go SUP in the Creeks. Remember to ziplock your phone. The little ones can sit on the front of the board as you make your way through this calm SUP’ing experience.

Go fishing

Oh, the books that have been written about the life lessons learned from fishing, too many to name! Grab a rod, get some bait and cast a line. Go see the guys at Bill Fisher Outfitters and they’ll get you all set – you’ll only have to cast the line and reel in the fish.

Insider Track

Pond fish, charter fish, or go big and go the Canyons….go down to the docks and strike up a conversation to learn all about your options and hear the legendary fish tails of Nantucket waters. As you hear the excitement of reeling in the big catch and the battles had, plan your adventure out to sea!

Oh wait…another way to do it!

Don’t want to charter a boat? Want the freedom of your own boat? Go right down to Straight Wharf and see the guys with Island Boat Rentals, this makes for another incredible adventure where you can storm the shores of Coatue. They will set you up with a boat, some directions and then shove you off to go forth and conquer!

Hike the island

Say land-based and go for hike! Explore Altar Rock, the Cliff Walk in ‘Sconset (be sure to look for the topiary whale made famous in Ahab’s Wife), or any of the Nantucket Conservation Foundations amazing properties. Pick berries, see deer, bunnies, snakes (if your looking otherwise you won’t really see any slithery creatures) and some of the incredible birds that make a stop in the 02554! Sanford Farms is one of my favorites. With a three different-sized trail walks, there is something for everyone.

Insider Track

Be the guide and explore the Linda Loring Foundation Self Guided Nature Trail or attend one of their many summer events! Learn about Nantucket's biologically diverse ecosystems and how LLF is a leading research institution!

Oh wait…another way to do it!

A fun land-based activity that you might not have participated in before, or at least not on an island, is Disc Golf. Yup, another 18 hole course was added to the island. The Sunken Ship has what you need to get started. Check out an area of the island you might not have been to, but before you go visit their website for all the 411!

Work out the island way

As we get to the end of this list that is meant to paint a small picture of the many incredible family activities, we are reminded that for the most part people come to Nantucket because they love nature, the outdoors and being active. What better way to celebrate the best of Nantucket and the health and wellness of your family by working out together. There are plenty of 5k’s, Swim Events, golf and tennis spots for you to hold a great family challenge. I have been fortunate to play several of the top courses in the US and one of my favorite rounds was on Skinner’s pasture-type golf course with a group of 3 special young boys. It is the perfect spot to teach kids about golf, all while taking a beautiful walk!

Insider Track

Ok, so you know you can go for a walk, take a run or swim together but mix it up and make it just for your group. Have a yoga teacher meet you on a beach for family yoga session. Or hold your own cardio boot camp with one of the many terrific instructors! Or, meet others and head to the Rotary early Saturday mornings and start out with the dedicated spandex crew that launches from this point every Saturday. Sometimes, they do two loops, the first one will blow the average recreational rider off their seat but usually the second loop has a “no rider left behind” policy.

Drive on the beach

Of course, then there is Great Point and general island exploration! Rent a jeep and wander or, if you have brought your own sand-loving 4x4 vehicle, go get a beach sticker and a map and explore the areas are permissible for beach driving. Yes, they do mean deflate your tires down to 15psi – this is no joke and most of us have 1 story about getting stuck, no need for you to become another statistic!

Insider Track

Thanks to the Trustees of the Reservation, you can have an island adventure that your kids will dream about, forever. The Great Point Lighthouse sticker is one worth getting. Pack a cooler, snacks, beverages, lunch, dinner, fishing poles, beach towels, blankets, a small shovel, whiffle ball stuff, snorkels and go explore the terrain – the inside route, the outside route, the far reaching corners to the towering lighthouse and enjoy it all. Be wowed and ask somebody where the real haulover is (not the shop) and why it was important to the history of Nantucket sea captains!

Now, after reading this list, once on island and presented with the words “I’m bored,” come see me at Fisher Real Estate on Main Street and I promise to find some activity that your children will find at least mildly entertaining. I still have 3d printing, the aquarium touch tank, arrowhead exploration, incredible art and pottery making, group surf lessons and wild food foraging up my sleeve! Plus, the extra special nighttime activity where kids can go in their pj’s and though a magical lens stargaze at Maria Mitchel’s observatory.
