"Are you looking to build or remodel your home or office? Have you thought about reducing your carbon footprint by incorporating green design principals into your project? This workshop takes a look at ways, both simple and more complex, to make your project more energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Hosted by James Kuester of Kuester Design, this workshop will cover site selection for the green home or office, designing to maximize energy and water efficiencies, materials choices for environmentally sound construction, and construction considerations for the green project.
Another Rome: Architecture and Urbanism in the Eternal City Between the World Wars with Steve Semes 09/18/13 – California

There are many Romes. This talk will introduce a Rome that is not illustrated in guidebooks and is little known to the English-language audience —the work of architects and urban designers practicing during the 1920s and 30s who sought to continue classical design traditions while adapting the city and its buildings to modern requirements. As the immemorial capital of Empire and Papacy entered the culminating stages of its transformation into a modern metropolis, architects faced the challenges of modernity in different ways. The Rationalist movement sought to recreate the city on a new model based on abstraction and industrial materials. Others, the subject of this talk, made maintaining continuity with the city’s architectural heritage a priority in their work. The rivalry between these two camps, revealing complex relations between politics and design, shaped the Rome we see today.
An American Style: Global Sources for New York Textile and Fashion Design

09/27/13 - 2/02/14 - New York

"An American Style: Global Sources for New York Textile and Fashion Design, 1915–1928 examines the efforts of the American Museum of Natural History to educate and inspire New York textile and fashion designers during and after World War I.

This exhibition is especially significant this year, as New York celebrates the centennial of the 1913 Armory Show—the seminal exhibition trumpeting the formal, non-representational mode of rendering form that marked the emergence of modern art in America. And indeed, many of the designers who participated in the AMNH’s activities worked in Greenwich Village, the thriving artistic and cultural epicenter of the avant-garde. The embrace by these designers of a more graphic and less representational aesthetic would be a harbinger of American design in the decades that followed."

Upcoming Art & Design Events:

“Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers” – The Museum of the City of New York (Ends 9/15/13)

Making Room: New Models for Housing New Yorkers showcases innovative design solutions to better accommodate New York City’s changing, and sometimes surprising, demographics, including a rising number of single people, and will feature a full-sized, flexibly furnished micro-studio apartment of just 325 square feet – a size prohibited in most areas of the city. Visitors to the exhibition will see models and drawings of housing designs by architectural teams commissioned in 2011 by Citizens Housing & Planning Council, in partnership with the Architectural League of New York. The exhibition also presents winning designs from the Bloomberg administration’s recently launched pilot competition to test new housing models, as well as examples set by other cities in the United States and around the world, including Seattle, Providence, Montreal, San Diego, and Tokyo.

“Visible Storage – Study Center” – The Brooklyn Museum

The last phase in the creation of the Luce Center for American Art concludes with the opening of the 5,000 square-foot Visible Storage Study Center. The dense display of objects in the Visible Storage Study Center offers you an inside look at how museums work and provides a glimpse of the breadth and scope of the Brooklyn Museum's extensive American collections. As huge as the Museum's building is, just a small fraction of the permanent collections can be displayed in its limited exhibition gallery space. Whereas only about 350 works are on view in the adjacent American Identities exhibition, this facility gives open access to some 2,000 of the many thousands of American objects held in storage, which are now available for viewing and research by students, scholars, and the general public.
