Born as Nora Lum in Queens, New York, she has come a far way from the small railroad apartment in Brooklyn following her catapult into the limelight. The actress, comedian, and internet personality was once “scared” to invest in a larger space, but eventually moved to West Hollywood in 2019 where she purchased a $2.27 million townhome. Nearly two years later, she is now bidding farewell to her former residence listing it on the market for a slightly heightened price of $2.4 million. The presumed reason as to why she is selling her former home is that she recently purchased a stylish Bel-Air mansion for $3.5 million.

Awkwafina’s former West Hollywood home is a contemporary townhome spanning 3,500 square feet. The residence includes three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms. The loft-style living space offers three levels, a roof deck with spa, and dazzling views of the cityscape. Haute Residence: How did the real estate market look in the beginning of 2020?

Jeff Hyland: To start the year, we could have never guessed that 2020 would take us on such a roller coaster ride. With that being said, luxury real estate has remained strong and stable throughout a plethora of uncertainties. At the beginning of the year we all had high hopes and expectations for what the markets could prescribe, and to be frank, I could not be more confident in the security of real estate investing.

HR: What, if any, changes did the pandemic have on prices? On inventory?

JH: One large and looming question we all faced in March was if there would be any changes to our market. In these eight months we have all been fighting the pandemic, we haven’t seen any dramatic changes to prices or available inventory. In fact, we are seeing record sale figures while inventory continues to remain low. If there has been any change, we are seeing both buyers and sellers become more motivated to close on the right offers.

HR: As 2020 is coming to an end, what it your outlook into 2021?

JH: 2020, although turbulent, experienced a great number of triumphs in the real estate market. Hilton & Hyland was not only able to meet the expectations we set for ourselves to start the year, we continue to exceed them with flying colors. If our collective strength and perseverance successfully navigated us through choppy waters thus far, 2021 should be a stroll in the park. The month of April was anything but what we expected and hoped. Unlike many pending sales that have fallen out of escrow throughout the country, Hilton & Hyland agents represented both sides of the $19.5 million-sale of Lee Iacocca’s longtime Bel-Air home.

“To have our agents represent both the buyer and the seller for such an esteemed and historic property is sincerely an honor,” said Jeff Hyland, President of Hilton & Hyland.

Lee A. Iacocca, the late automobile luminary who ran the Ford Motor Company and took the Chrysler Corporation out from the verge of bankruptcy passed in July of 2019 due to complications from his bout with Parkinson’s disease.

In an industry filled with legends and America’s framers, Iacocca was the only executive in modern times to head operations for two of the Big Three automobile companies. Taking into consideration his societal stature, his estate listed by Rick Hilton and David Kramer of Hilton & Hyland was equally opulent.

Set on more than an acre, the two-story home has a grand foyer with arched ceilings, a wood-paneled den, a great room, five fireplaces and a master retreat. With a total of five bedrooms and eight bathrooms, including an apartment for staff, the Italianate-style residence was fit for fortune.

Originally purchased by Iacocca in 1993 for $4.25 million after stepping down from his position as CEO and chairman of Chrysler, the 10,682 square-foot estate was frequented by notable entertainment elites like Frank Sinatra, Priscilla Presley, Betty White and Bob and Dolores Hope.

“People still need a place to live, regardless of financial situation,” Kramer said. Kramer and Kevin Anderson, also of Hilton & Hyland, represented the buyer.

Nine-digits. Not eight, not seven, but nine. Nine whole digits. Having represented our clients on four $100 Million+ sales over the last three years has been a major honor.

Jeff Hyland, President of Hilton & Hyland, believes LA continues to be the outright leader in the luxury real estate market. “Los Angeles has become the Blue-Chip Art of real estate," Hyland said, and Hilton & Hyland continues to lead the ultra-luxury market.

Maybe the most noteworthy of our nine-digit sales was the record-breaking sale of the Playboy Mansion. The Mansion was one of the most famous homes in the world as Hugh Hefner touted his estate as the premiere party destination for decades. Famous for a plethora of reasons, the sale of the Playboy Mansion in 2016 was exceptionally notable because it launched Los Angeles real estate into the nine-digit-tier for the first time. Drew Fenton and Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents on this record-breaking $100-million deal.

As the priciest home on Malibu’s famous Billionaire’s Beach, a $110-million off-market transaction set a new Los Angeles County record in 2018. Wrapped in resonant teak wood, the Richard Meier-designed beachfront home of the founder of the Hard Rock Café and Casinos offered seven bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and wrap-around balconies with incredible ocean views within its 8,000-square-feet of living space. Branden and Rayni Williams of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents.

Hilton & Hyland is synonymous with securing record sales and The Manor was no different. Made famous by Aaron and Candy Spelling, The Manor was originally sold by Rick Hilton and Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland in 2011 for $85-million. Rick Hilton and David Kramer of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer, Formula One heiress Petra Ecclestone. The Manor sold again in the summer of 2019 for $119.75-million by Ecclestone who revamped the estate after her original purchase. As one of the most grand and private residences in the world, even larger than The White House, the 56,000-square-feet masterpiece laid on nearly five-acres of rare flat land that bordered the LA Country Club. A winding driveway lead to a circular motor court with a fountain and space for 100 cars. Jeff Hyland of Hilton & Hyland represented the buyer.

Last, but certainly not least, was the $150-million sale of Chartwell (also known as The Beverly Hillbillies Estate) to Lachlan Murdoch, the executive chairman and CEO of the Fox Corporation.  The late Jerrold Perenchio, former Univision chairman and CEO, was able to take the original property and expand it over time into 10.39 incomparable acres in the heart of Bel-Air. The main residence was originally designed by Sumner Spaulding in 1930 with a timelessly elegant exterior of symmetrical cut limestone in the French Neoclassical style. Offering panoramic views from downtown to the Pacific Ocean, Chartwell showcased a rare combination of extensive grounds and powerful jetliner views. Rick Hilton, Jeff Hyland, Drew Fenton and Gary Gold of Hilton & Hyland were the listing agents, while Drew Fenton alone represented the buyer.

As Los Angeles continues to set new records with an increase in nine-digit sales, Hilton & Hyland remains the leader in conducting the highest level of residential deals.
