Two very different record-breaking paintings topped the art market and news.

Untitled by Jean-Michel Basquiat sold to the Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa for $110.5 million (Sotheby’s), setting  a new record for an American artist.

Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi sold at Christie’s auction for $450 million. Despite the fact that some experts criticized its condition and others doubted its authenticity, it crushed the previous world record set by Picasso’s Women of Algiers in 2015 at $179 million.

Although those are extreme examples, the entire art market proved very strong, driven by post-war and contemporary art.

Wine, the 2016’s top-performing asset class, rose 11% in 2017, compared with  24% in 2016. It is now the second place asset class after art. Much of the demand for wine comes from Asia. Burgundy markets increased the most, at 16.5% though many wine regions were hit hard due to frost damage (some production down as much 70% in volume).

Classic cars, a consistently strong asset class, saw record-breaking sales. The top seller was a 1956 Aston Martin DBR1, raced by legendary Stirling Moss, at a RM Sotheby’s auction for $22.5 million. It was the most expensive British car ever sold. Some other notable sales were a 1995 McLaren F1 sold through Bonhams for $15.6 million and a 1959 Ferrari 250GT California Spider LWB that sold for $18 million.

In other asset classes, Hong Kong jeweler Chow Tai Fook paid $71.2 million for “the Pink Star,” a 59.6-carat vivid pink diamond. A a 1,000-year-old Ru guanyo ceramic brush-washing bowl sold for $40 million. And a rare set of four 16th- or 17th-century Chinese huanghuali folding chairs, sold for almost $7.5 million.

While it’s likely Betty Sue, Depp’s mother, lived in the home, Depp also sold the property in 2001 for $1 million, only to repurchase it in 2005 for $2 million, according to The Sun.

Century Oaks' main home is a Mediterranean-style white stucco mansion with a green tile roof and a red brick driveway.

On Saturday, at 11 a.m. in Clearwater, DeCaro Luxury Real Estate Auctions will conduct a dual public sale of two luxurious waterfront properties in the Harbor Oaks Historic District—including lots 800 and 802 Druid Road South (two connected estates which comprise Century Oaks) and 820 Druid Road South (a neighboring waterfront home). The lots are ideally located on Clearwater Bay in Pinellas County.

The 23,919-square-foot mansion at 802 Druid Road South boasts 10 bedrooms, 15 full-bathrooms and 9 half-bathrooms.

Both properties were developed in 1915 by New York real estate mogul Dean Alvord, who transformed the waterfront from an abandoned United States military outpost (called Fort Harrison) into a “luxury oasis for the rich and famous” according to Daniel DeCaro, the auction house’s founder and auctioneer, who will preside over the sale. The auctions will be held onsite at 802 Druid Road South, blocks from downtown Clearwater.

“The first property being auctioned, Century Oaks, was actually Alvord’s personal mansion, which he built with extra lavish finishes on the Bluffs of Clearwater,” says DeCaro. “The home is by far the most prominent estate in the Tampa Bay Area, which past owners can attest to, including Formula One legend Nigel Mansell.”

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Century Oaks was part of Clearwater's first planned residential subdivision, built with then-innovative amenities such as paved streets and underground utilities to attract wealthy "Northern industrialists and professionals looking to winter in the Florida sun." Lots sold for a reported $1,750 then.

Since, Century Oaks is responsible for giving rise to one of Clearwater's wealthiest neighborhoods. Mansell sold the estate in 1996 for a reported $5.5 million to businessman and champion powerboat racer Hugh Fuller, who subsequently listed the property for $17.5 million in 2013.

The sprawling estate has in-ground swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, a private dock, a gazebo and a bell tower, all of which overlook Clearwater Bay.

Auction #1: Century Oaks

The winning bidder may need a honeymoon period to get acquainted with the property. Century Oaks is a 3.45 acre-compound with a main house and a north house surrounded by meticulously lush landscaping, palm trees, 500-year-old oak trees, fountains and cascading gardens. The estate boasts two in-ground swimming pools; regulation-size tennis courts and basketball courts; a private dock with several boat slips, a boat and Jet Ski lifts; and a historic bell tower and gazebo which overlook Clearwater Bay.

According to DeCaro Luxury Real Estate Auctions, the estate is still beautified with original features and custom finishes, including oversized wood moldings, Brazilian cherry wood floors and an elegant foyer with marble floors and a winding staircase.

Located at 802 Druid Road South, this home boasts 10 bedrooms, 15 full-bathrooms, 9 half-bathrooms and two private guest wings. It also features: a formal living room with a gas fireplace; a formal dining room; a kitchen with butler and staff areas; a home theater; a library; a music studio; a sun room; a trophy room; and a ballroom with (of course) three crystal chandeliers, 25-foot wood-beamed ceilings and a terrace that opens to an outdoor entertainment space.

It sits high on a waterfront bluff and includes more than 1 acre of buildable land with direct views of Clearwater Bay.
