Upcoming Art & Design Events:

Metropolitan Museum of Art: ‘African Art, New York, and the Avant-Garde’ (through Sept. 2)

“Timed to the centennial of the Armory Show of 1913, this exhibition tells the story of African art’s debut in cutting-edge New York museums and galleries with exceptional candor. It makes clear that early-20th-century Americans received Modern art and African art as a single import, derived from French and Belgian colonies, distilled in Paris and presented on these shores by a few tastemaking dealers and collectors. (212) 535-7710,metmuseum.org. (Rosenberg)”

Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft - SF, CA

"The American Craft Council will partner with nine celebrated San Francisco-based interior designers and architects to present “Make Room: Modern Design Meets Craft.” The unique showcase will celebrate the symbiotic relationship between craft and design and offer attendees a host of ideas on how to incorporate fine craft into their personal home décor."

Decofair 2013 – Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

“Decofair 2013, the country’s only mid to high-end international design event, will take place from November 29 to December 2 at the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events. It is co-organised by global design show Maison et Objet. Decofair last year attracted more than 11,300 of Saudi Arabia’s best design buyers, leading professionals, architects, designers, specifiers and project owners. The event will see top Swiss interior brand Vitra present their latest range of functional and inspiring design pieces.”

Museum of Arts and Design: ‘Against the Grain: Wood in Contemporary Art, Craft and Design’ (through Sept. 15)

“This sixth show in the museum’s Materials and Process series is a big improvement on its predecessors, mostly because it feels more artist- and designer-driven. Representing the Chelsea gallery contingent are Alison Elizabeth Taylor, with marquetry installations; Phoebe Washburn and Leonardo Drew, with scrap-wood sculptures; and Roy McMakin, with slyly repurposed found furniture. From the design-fair circuit come functional works like Mark Moskovitz’s “Facecord,” a sideboard that looks like a stack of firewood when the drawers are closed, and Maarten Baas’s knife block in the shape of a head (which seems destined for the MoMA design store). 2 Columbus Circle, (212) 299-7777, madmuseum.org. (Rosenberg)”
