The Haute Design Network by Haute Residence brought together four designers from across the country to sit down and discuss the business aspect of their Design Careers.

"The Business of Design" webinar was hosted by Haute Living Media Group Senior VP, April Donelson and included the following designers: Rafaela Simoẽs and Laila Colvin of 2id Interiors, Karlee Coble of Karlee Coble Interiors, and Dorothy Alon of Sophea Designs. While interior design can certainly be an artistic and expressive career, when one owns their own design firm, the business aspect of things comes into frame all too quickly. The talented and successful designers explained the intricacies of walking the fine line between artists and business person all at once.

Here are some of the highlights of the conversation:

April Donelson: At what point did you decide to start your own design firm and was there ever a point where you ever thought of designing in any capacity which did not involve owning your own firm?

Karlee Coble: I started out working for other firms. Right out of art school, I had worked for three major firms before I started my own firm. While there, I learned everything from working with clients, to writing contracts, to learning how to get work, how to maintain work and so on. I found that every project is different and every client is different. So, I kind of worked my way up to my own firm and I got to see everything from other design firms. Once Had my own firm, it was organic and it just naturally happened. It was a point in my career where I was ready to be on my own and do my own thing and serve my clients in my own way. I had all the knowledge from other firms on how to do so. I guess I kind of worked it out backwards but it all worked out and it has been really successful.

AD: In regard to the beginning, the early years, what is the biggest lesson you got or the biggest take away you could share?

Rafaela Simoẽs: I think the biggest lesson I've learned has actually been to learn how to say 'no' to a client when you don't feel the chemistry or when you sense that things are just not clicking and you feel the relationship will not go well. Because I'm a pleaser, I always incline to try to satisfy the client no matter what but at some pint down the road, things get ugly if you avoid saying 'no.' So now, whenever I get that feeling, I would just rather not proceed and I move on.

AD: How do you integrate social media into your business? Do you see it as a positive or negative?

Laila Colvin: I think social media, for our company at least, is so major these days, especially Instagram. I would say we have more than half of our clients coming from Instagram alone. It's unbelievable how Instagram in particular is so important to us.

AD: What is the most enjoyable component of being a business owner?

Dorothy Alon: The best part of this business is the I can drive in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Venice, and I may not know the person who live in this home, but I do know how this house looks on the inside. We also impact the exterior of the house as well so philosophically, it's like we are part of the landscape of Los Angeles. It's exciting because you think of all the people who live in these houses and you don't know their names but I feel as if I am a part of their lives despite not knowing their names and vise-versa.

With each turn in this ocean front condo in Oceana, Key Biscayne, views of ocean and blue sky change, mix and match as they would with the twist of a kaleidoscope. However, here, the lens comes in the form of oversized windows and sliders that frame the beautiful natural setting.

Credit for the design throughout the home goes to Luciana Fragali, CEO and Owner of Design Solutions. Her assignment to create a comfortable home for a Brazilian newcomer and her two children was a breeze, so to speak, thanks to a lot of group thinking, which included the homeowners.

In just one year, Fragali and the team at Design Solutions were able to complete the design, renovation and staging of two individual units into one contemporary dream home, which adds up to a total of 6,000 sq ft. After all, this residence is comprised of two combined penthouse units.

The client was introduced to Fragali through mutual friends. The design took off from there.

"There are amazing beach homes in Brazil and she wanted to have a home here that would feel the same way - a house that would be contemporary, cozy and not pretentious," said Fragali. "It needed to be a place her kids could play with friends without worry, and still be an appropriate setting for entertaining."

This certainly implies a fine line design-wise, but by all accounts, Fragali and the Design Solutions team nailed it.

At first, the client just wanted to combine both penthouse units, keep the same structure and incorporate some millwork.

"The she got more and more excited about the home and wanted to do more and more," said Fragali.

Although the remodel was dramatic, it was well well-planned. Various floor plans were produced by Fragali, who has a background in architecture. After plenty of communication and several meetings with the clients, a singular vision was agreed upon and all worked out to lay out the final plan. From the very beginning, the client realized she was part of the team.

According to Fragali, “She went to the site every day and purchased the specified materials. This was the smoothest project I’ve worked on. Whenever there was an issue, we sat down together and solved it.”

New rooms include a grandiose foyer, the maid’s quarters, a playroom and family room, a spa-inspired master bath, a spacious and functional master closet, as well as a brand new chef’s kitchen by MiaCucina. For furnishings, Fragali focused on durable materials in a neutral color palette. She chose mystery white marble flooring with oversize tiles for living areas, white oak for the bedroom and closet floors and porcelain tiles for the bathrooms.

The idea was to create cozy spaces by furnishing layouts and introducing color and patterns in pillows, art and decorative accessories. Fragali also designed a custom-made, stunningly elaborate wooden pivot entry door, as well as built-ins, including the dining room buffet, family room television wall and a dramatic bronze mirrored with LED lighting wall niche behind the living room.

“There are hidden LEDs on top of the niche. So at night, when the lights are on, it washes over the bronze mirror and illuminates it.”

In the kitchen, sleek new cabinetry gives off an ultra-contemporary vibe and adds visual interest. Today, luxury homes are only as valuable as the kitchens found within. Fragali opted for a calcatta gold marble countertops with a matching slabbed ranged hood, Subzero and Wolf appliances, matte lacquer Bianco Ghiaccio finishes, and Castagno wood for the breakfast top and cover system.

With minimal orientation and flat surfaces, the style is intentionally non-traditional. "This is the future of design," said Fragali.

By the end of the project, these two separate units became one single bright and easy-to-live-in space that lives up to those dreamy kaleidoscopic views.

Burt recently spoke to Haute Design about concepts regarding healthy buildings and indoor air quality.

Haute Design: We are paraphrasing here, but you recently mentioned that most people place objects within an interior environment and call it 'design.' Why is it so important for clients to adopt a more holistic approach toward design?

Hafsa Burt: I do believe that oftentimes focus is more on the relationship of objects in a space and not so much on the long-term effects of the built environment on the planet or of a particular building on its occupants’ health. We’ve been preaching about healthy buildings and occupants’ health since 2009 and have done hundreds of peer advocacy talks on the topic.

Numerous studies have been done that show a direct correlation between our built environment and our health, therefore, to me, design is a well-thought-out solution that focuses on how occupants feel physically and mentally in a space and what affects the indoor environment might have on their wellbeing, including cognitive function.

HD: What are a few common efforts you are applying throughout your projects that will benefit the clients' well-being by way of air quality or other approaches you would like to highlight?

HB: We look at the material data of all finishes and make sound choices based on their health impacts. Our focus is also on the big picture and how the space feels besides a two-dimensional aesthetic view. We also work closely with mechanical consultants to see how we can devise innovative ways to improve the air circulation in a space and several other measures.

Box Factory House

HD: Would you say designing with mental health in mind and designing with internal air quality in mind go hand in hand?

HB: I do believe that spatial design can contribute to mental health and indoor air quality affects cognitive function. Design of spaces can certainly affect mental health. A few years ago I visited a newly constructed micro-housing building and wondered if the residents could experience social isolation, depression in such a space. Access to daylight, possibly a view, well thought-out design solutions that focus on space, finishes and furnishings that are ‘safe’ all contribute to a healthy living space.

HD: Do you foresee a rise in health-conscious design as a result of the pandemic?

HB: Yes very much, we did a lot of consulting last year on how to prevent spread of disease in commercial and institutional buildings. We explored strategies that would allow touch less function and social distancing accompanied with a constant supply of fresh filtered air.

Before the pandemic, more than a decade ago we used case studies of legionnaire’s disease to advocate for healthy building strategies and with the pandemic it all became too real. More and more people are conscious of their surroundings and how it affects their health and productivity and are asking for strategies that can have a positive impact.

Founders and Creative Directors Rafaela Simoes and Laila Colvin have established Miami’s premiere luxury interior design company, 2id Interiors. Regarded for their relevant and skillful approach to design, 2id Interiors in Miami is an award-winning leading interior design firm servicing clients which are among today's well-known names in professional industries and entertainment, spanning across South Florida, the U.S., and around the world with projects in Canada, Europe, and Brazil.

The dynamic duo behind 2id Interiors sat down with Haute Design and spoke about an eclectic array of topics which covered subjects from collaboration in design to what inspires their work.

Haute Design: Both of you are from Brazil. Do you think part of the Brazilian culture or design criteria carries over into your work?

Rafaela Simoes: Yes. I think the use of wood and organic, essential materials are always present in our design and I think that really comes from the Brazilian style of design. The desire to use natural and organic textures, I think, is very Brazilian and we always apply that into our work.

But because we also cater to so many cultures here in Miami, not just the Brazilians, I think we have learned how to be very diverse. For example, we have Russian clients who like a bit more 'bling-bling,' Brazilian clients who are more 'Earth-y,' and love the use of wood, but then we also have German clients, who have a totally different taste.

We have so many different clients and you can see that in our portfolio because it's so eclectic. We don't only follow one trend or one style. We cater to different cultures, different clients, with different backgrounds, and I think that is definitely reflected throughout our portfolio.

HD: We would agree! You mentioned the use of natural elements within your design. Have you noticed a shift with clients in regard to requesting more environmentally-conscious materials and design principles?

RS: Yes, I think so. Not specifically ecologically conscious material, but definitely more design aspects geared toward nature, more blues and greens. We are doing a lot of green walls on the exteriors of homes, so I do feel that people want the outdoors reflected inside their homes a little bit more. That said, I wouldn't go as far as saying it would be ecologically-friendly thinking.

We do have clients who really want to go in an environmentally-conscious direction and make sure the materials are responsible, but that's rare. That does not happen much.

Rafaela Simoes

HD: That's interesting. Switching gears a bit, considering all the time most of us have spent indoors over the past year or more, do you think clients have reconsidered how much they value their interior living spaces and home design?

RS: We definitely felt that at the beginning of COVID. We were a little bit worried about what was going to happen, as everyone was. So, everyone was remaining indoors and trying to contact us for potential projects and we couldn't do construction. But clients were ready to improve their homes right away.

From the beginning of lockdown, clients wanted to change furniture or change the layout of their homes that we had recently worked on and make things more comfortable. The first thing we did, before lockdown was over - we were already sending proposals to existing clients and new clients . It seemed everyone was desperate to improve their homes because it was a new way of life. No one had ever stayed home for this long so it was an interesting shift in the way people lived.

Everyone wants a comfortable home and they always have. But now, this idea of a comfortable home is really at the top of the list for requests. The requests have definitely shifted toward a more cozy and inviting home because people are working from home, the kids are studying from home, so comfort is key.

HD: To that point, something that has been rightfully addressed often throughout the year has been mental health. Have you noticed this awareness of mental health affect the clients' requests?

RS: I totally think so. But with us, we always thought about that when we started in this business; using materials we love, natural materials, bringing nature inside, including wood and raw materials inside the home, which does not happen in Miami often.

I think the Miami style is very shiny and cold and not very home-y. It's glossed whites and a pearly kind of style. Which, in my opinion, is not the most mentally healthy because it's so cold rather than warm and cozy like one should want their home to be. We are always designing with that in mind. We totally think that the house can be chic and elegant but still include some nature in the home.

We want the home to be beautiful but still feel cozy and warm and I totally connect that to mental health. I think that having a home that is not so cold and stark is very important for mental health.

Laila Colvin

HD: If we had to ask you to name three main principles throughout your design, what would those be?

Laila Colvin: I think our main principle is definitely to design for the client. As Rafaela mentioned, we have clients from all over the world and our portfolio is so eclectic because of that. I don't think we have a specific style. We do have some things that are always present, but we really try to embrace the client's dream home.

We really try to follow their vision and try to put that together for the client. If the style is more traditional, we will keep things more traditional for that project. If the taste is very modern and contemporary, we embrace that. So, whatever dream the client brings to us, we try to really embrace that.

We are not designers that say, 'you know what, that's not my style, go find someone else.' We really love having been able to work on such a variety of projects because that is an asset when trying to satisfy the clients to create their home, not our home.

HL: So, would you say in this case the client can be regarded as a secret weapon within your design team?

LC: Yes, that would be a fun way to say it, yeah. We definitely listen to them. There are a lot of exchanges between us and the client so that we have a better understanding of their desires. I do not understand how other designers can have a style that is so specific. You know, some designers have a style that once you see the work, you know it's them right away.

I don't know how they do it! Because they either need the client to totally buy into their personal vision so the client agrees to everything they recommend, or they say no to a lot of clients. We cannot do that. We actually love the difference between our projects and clients.

Considered to be one of the most renowned designers in South Florida, Luciana Fragali continues to dazzle interior design enthusiasts with her attention and care for her clients' needs. She arrived at interior design instinctually. With a notable creative character, and a passion for unique and special objects, Luciana is always looking to implement treasures within her projects.

In 2005 she opened her Miami-based design firm Design Solutions. Since then, her work has been mainly focused on the development of private residential projects and professional spaces. Each of her unique projects and ideas is deeply rooted in a great relationship with the client. She believes this is the key point to create a unique residential design that will translate into someone's dream project. We had the chance to speak to the designer about her inspirations, creative process and aspirations.

Haute Residence: Tell us about the beginning of your journey in the design world. How did the love for product and interiors emerge?

Luciana Fragali: I strongly believe that I was born to be an architect/interior designer. While other kids my age were playing with dolls or running around in the playground, my favorite pastime was going to the mall where that was a unique store which sold children's furniture. This was my favorite place to spend my time. As I entered my teenage years, the antique fair near my home became my 'go-to' spot. I loved hunting for unique pieces, never knowing what I would discover. So, for me, there was never any other path. I was born for this field!

HR: How would you describe your signature style?

LF: The style theme is relative, since it's a mixture of your own design beliefs along with the customer's needs, and how to adapt both visions. We always seek to meet the demands of each client while giving guidelines to create a functional context where sobriety and elegance, along with choice of furniture, recreate refined atmospheres.

HR: We know every designer has their own inspiration source and vision for a determined project. Where do you search for your inspiration? Tell us a little bit more about your creative process.

LF: My sources of inspiration are multiple and appear naturally. They are born from the project itself, from the idiosyncrasies of the spaces, from the environment where the house is located and from the ideas fo the client. Our creative process begins by understanding the project. This requires listening, interpreting and molding what the client requires of you all while carrying your knowledge of every nuance of the design development.

HR: Describe a design project with your influence in three words.

LF: Four words: Elegant, sober, personal, functional.

HR: What about your clients? How do you think they would describe your ideas?

LF: First, make the result optimal. Second, make sure the solutions meet their expectations. And finally, let them sit in the house of their dreams.

HR: Do you think the relationship between the designer and client is a fundamental part of the creative process? Why?

LF: Yes, because it cannot work any other way. Even if the client has clear ideas, the project has to be modeled based off the evolution of the relationship with the designer. Ideally, this evolution will make the client internalize the concepts and feel more ownership toward the project.

HR: Do you think that the current pandemic situation has changed your relationship with your clients and your vision as an interior designer?

LF: Our vision as interior designers, our beliefs and the way we work does not change because we have lived through the pandemic. That said, our vision does change in terms of the emergence of new paradigms of the daily use of our private spaces. People are spending much more time in their homes and have needs that were previously external. Now we want to adapt the home to these kinds of requirements. Spending more time in our homes makes us think about how we can take advantage of our respective spaces and how we could adapt them to our specific needs.

HR: If you had to name the project of your career, which would it be and why?

LR: The best project is the one to come. That means we still have a passion for what we do.

HR: As a designer, how important is it to follow design trends that are established in the industry?

LR: It is relatively important. Market trends are ephemeral, impersonal, superfluous and almost out of touch with the customer and their stylistic tastes. Our trends have always aimed to seek timelessness, elegance, durability and quality in the finishes and solutions we provide.

HR: What about the future? Do you have some ideas for projects? What can we expect from your company?

LR: We plan to continue to seek excellence in the design and execution within our projects as well as in regard to how we collaborate with our clients. We aim to ensure that our service is the best possible.

HR: What is the secret to create the perfect project?

LR: Through experience, you learn to understand that establishing a trust-worthy relationship with those who depend on you with something as valuable and cherished as their home, is a fundamental part of the process. This is undoubtedly the facet of my job that I like the most. I place great value in client relationships and crediting them as an invaluable part of the design process. I strive to create friendships with my clients. Achieving a personal appreciation for each other benefits the design process tremendously. A successful project is one where we drastically exceed expectations. If we give the client exactly what they had in mind, we have failed. We strive to implement design solutions that fulfill the intended objectives in unexpected, innovative ways.

HR: If you could send one message to young designers, what would it be?

LR: Our consistent advice is this: do what you do with passion. Invest hours of your time into routine work. Do it with your own personality and try to be the best professional possible.

Pinecrest, Florida has long been a desirable destination for people looking to call South Florida home. The city is one of the areas in Miami where family values and community activities like farmers' markets, picnics and park playdates still happen every week. This area is one of Florida's most popular choices for luxury real estate projects due to its cozy neighborhoods, lush green spaces and quiet roads.

This past spring, the city welcomed its newest real estate masterpiece. The "Casa 6695" project is a seven-bedroom, seven and a half bathroom residence in the heart of one of Pinecrest's most attractive neighborhoods.

It all started with a blank canvas and groundbreaking concept by Luis Junco and Giampaolo Guarino, the brains behind ECO Modern Custom Homes, a luxury real estate developer that has been creating some of the most beautiful homes in Miami for years.

ECO Modern Custom Homes and Compass listing agents, David Rousso, Angel Nicolas and Ale Alfonzo envisioned a luxury home in the South Florida suburbs modeled after the best features of modern architecture in order to create their masterpiece. They set out to create a breathtaking and contemporary project with all the luxuries one could hope for in an upscale Miami estate project. Casa 6695 was made to stand out among other residences not just in Pinecrest but across South Florida.

To make their vision a reality, the team tapped renowned architect Zecky da Costa, known throughout the industry for his long trajectory managing and designing projects in Miami, as well as Venezuela and Spain. After months of arduous brainstorming and endless hours of collaboration, the team developed the blueprint that would transform their blank canvas into an exquisite South Florida residence.

Giampaolo Guarino, Angel Nicolas, Zecky da Costa, David Rousso, Luis Junco

The result?
An impressive, contemporary masterpiece that stands at the forefront of modern architecture and design.

"Casa 6695" is one of the most ambitious real estate projects to emerge from the South Florida market in recent times. This long-term collaboration between realtors, designers and builders has everything clients are looking for in a Miami property: a modern and fresh concept, an open layout, large entertaining areas, and outdoor spaces inspired by nature to soak up the warm South Florida sun.

The two-story luxury residence features two separate car garages, a high-tech media room, and a spacious wine cellar. It also has an open living area with 20-foot ceilings and porcelain Castellon flooring from Spain. Additionally, the 31,798-square foot lot also includes an in-ground swimming pool to entertain guests as well as smart home appliances that can be controlled via smart phone.

The interior is outfitted with Miele brand appliances and the millwork is provided by Pedini Miami, which specializes in high-end Italian designer cabinets. The kitchen has a white matte lacquer finish. It includes an island with grey cement doors and a natural oak wooden overhang, as well as stunningly decorative hood wall pieces.

If all of that was not enough, the team in charge of the project decided to include a brand-new Lamborghini Urus as part of the listing. The Urus is the Italian auto-maker's signature SUV, which is widely considered to be the fastest SUV on the planet today.

The "Casa 6695" house was purchased for $3.5 million by a renowned professional athlete whose identity can not be disclosed at this time.

With clean lines and a monochromatic palette, this Hallandale Beach home steers away from formality warming its contemporary tones with soft textiles and rich wood.

Designed in a soft palette of grey and white with pops of vivid red, the living and dining spaces blend seamlessly together to define the great room. Porcelain tile flooring weeps through the main floor and connects to the outdoors. The plush, red-velvet “Mad King” armchair by famed designer Marcel Wanders catches the eye immediately.

Architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha passed away Sunday, May 23rd at the age of 92. Mendes da Rocha died in a Sao Paulo hospital of lung cancer.

The highly-awarded architect is seen by many as one of the greatest Brazilian architects, coming second only to Oscar Niemeyer.

Born in 1928, Mendes da Rocha was part of an iconic generation of modernists and was globally regarded as a major architect despite having rarely built anything outside of his native Brazil.

Pinacoteca Sao Paulo

The Paulista School of Brazilian architecture, which he was part of, was generally characterized by exposed reinforced concrete, large open spaces, and rational structures. Mendes da Rocha's propensity to work with large expanses of raw concrete led to many associations with Brazilian brutalism, which the late architect did not care for.

Among Mendes da Rocha's greatest works are the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of Sao Paulo and the Athletic Club of Sao Paulo.

Pinacoteca Interior

Mendes da Rocha's work was duly noted and lauded throughout the world. Notably, he won the Mies van Der Rohe Award for Latin America for his renovation of the State Museum of Sao Paulo in 2001 and the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2006.

Editor’s Note: Haute Designer Hafsa Burt has been practicing architecture for 22 years. She has an undergraduate degree and a professional Master of Architecture from the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD). Burt has been running her own studio, hb+a Architects since 2006. Her portfolio includes work at the San Francisco Airport, institutional buildings, multifamily buildings, hospitality, retail, medical office buildings, and custom single-family homes.

She also founded a development arm for the firm called Box Lab which is focused on active research and development in product and space design and zero energy/zero carbon buildings. A passionate environmentalist, Burt adopted the 2030 challenge a decade ago and is a huge proponent of high-performance buildings. Her focus includes eliminating toxins with indoor air quality as a specialty. She actively speaks on the topic of indoor air quality as it relates to the practice of architecture and is an industry expert on “Healthy Building Practices”.

Here, she talked with Haute Design about her architecture firm, favorite design projects, and her sustainability and environmental goals for the future.

11 luxury townhomes at Stonebrae golf community

How did you get started in design?

I come from a family who, despite having advanced degrees in science, were creative and have relatives who are also engineers. Growing up, conversations were about creativity, problem-solving, and theories, and so it was a very creative and intellectual household. There was a lot of importance given to academics. I was particularly interested in physics, and in high school, I also got interested in the arts, specifically sculpture. Architecture just seemed like a natural fit, given those interests and my background growing up.

Tell us a little bit more about hb+a Architects as well as Box Lab.

I worked for larger companies before I started the design studio. It was a natural next chapter once I got my license. Most of my colleagues that were starting their studios were doing smaller jobs, but right from the beginning I started collaborating on institutional projects with other architects. So that led to projects such as working on the San Francisco Airport, and other institutional work, that really helped the business develop.

The idea for Box Lab came because I've always been interested in real estate development. Sometimes your ideas get kind of squished when you're working for clients, because it's their vision, and it's your job to make their vision become a reality. With Box Lab, I can put my own visions out there specifically as they relate to environmental sustainability. Zero carbon or carbon neutrality has been a focus of mine for 20 plus years, and most projects just address what's needed by local mandates. I thought there was a need to develop actual zero carbon prototypes. It took a while, but it came about in 2019, and since then, we've done a few projects.

Mei Apartments in San Leandro, CA

What have been some of your favorite design projects that you've worked on so far?

I would say different projects have different favorite moments. For instance, in the single-family residence for Box Lab, we set out pretty ambitious goals for carbon neutrality and zero energy, and also construction efficiency. These goals were met very successfully.

I also did a retail store for a client way early on when I had just started the studio, and their budget was extremely strapped, but the owner had this unique personality and I wanted to give it a unique flavor without burning her budget. It was a good exercise in terms of finding materials and objects and turning them into fixtures for her retail store to give it its own individual character.

What would you say are some of the biggest accomplishments that your firm has accomplished so far?

I think it's a work in progress. I do like the fact that for just starting the studio in 2006, we were able to scale to much larger projects. That's a big one. We also are focused on carbon neutrality and zero energy, and we've kind of pioneered that. We also started the discussion of healthy buildings and indoor air roughly a decade before the pandemic. These are some of the things that I would say I'm proud of because we were ahead of the time. Everybody's talking about climate initiatives right now because it's so crucial for the industry, but for 20 plus years that's been our focus, we're not just trend-driven. It's a larger philosophy in terms of how buildings are built. I am proud of having done thoughtful work embedded in environmental and social awareness throughout my career instead of being trend-driven.

21 unit mixed-use project in Oakland, CA

What do you see for the future of your company and the industry in general?

Based on what the scientists are telling us, we have to reduce the greenhouse gases all over the world by 65% in the next nine years, and that's a pretty strong deadline. I'm hoping that that's where the industry would move. There is a bigger sense of urgency than, say, 20 years ago when we were talking about it. Some people may be caught by surprise in 2030 when it's too late, but ideally, that's where the industry is moving.

As for us, we're just going to continue on the innovation path, and keep experimenting and keep looking at how we can innovate products, furniture, fixtures, or equipment and systems for energy efficiency and carbon neutrality so a building has minimal impact on the planet and its people. Social equity is going to be very important. For instance, in a multi-family project, conversations will be about inclusivity. There's a lot at play and I think we will see it more and more in the industry.

Editor’s Note: Introducing one of our newest Haute Design members: Michael Miller of Centaur Interiors! Michael founded Centaur Interiors in 2010 as a firm specializing in turnkey solutions for high-end residential renovations. Based in Chicago, IL, Michael created a collaborative environment and network of industry experts including craftsmen, licensed tradesmen, architects, designers, and project managers, working in harmony to produce superior results. Centaur Interiors is redefining the art of building with their services including development, consulting, design-build, construction management, general contracting, interior architecture/design, furnishings, and art procurement.

What is your background and what made you want to pursue interior design?

I have a background in mechanical design and engineering. I did take some architecture classes as well, but never a degree. From an early age I was always sketching out my dream home, and even remodeling my parent’s house and bedroom when I was 12, so I knew I had a passion for design/aesthetics. Everywhere I go I consume design, architecture, and engineering in stores, restaurants, hotels, etc. It’s almost a part of my DNA to evaluate the design, what I like, or how I feel I can make this better. I use this for inspiration on our projects. It’s a lifestyle and rooted deep inside.

Why did you start Centaur Interiors?

I started CI as I found a large void in our industry for a single source conception to completion company. There was a standard architect-designer-GC model and it did not serve the client well. Nobody was ever on the same page and the client needed much more education to make informed decisions. At our firm, we are doing pricing within the design phase so the client is informed on the costs to make educated decisions. Within the last 5 years with my growing passion for art, we added an in-house gallery and also developed my digital art system Apollo which is launching in May. We are a true turnkey concept to completion firm specializing in high-end residential consulting + design + build + furnishings + artwork.

What makes Centaur different than other Interior Design firms?

Our process and relentless attention to detail. From the inception, we take our clients on a journey to understand their lifestyle and how they will interact with their homes. Through this, we understand their passions and style and can incorporate this within their designs. This process flows seamlessly into construction management and execution. Our team understands the focal points and the client’s priorities. We utilize technology to visually represent each aspect of the project for the client to make informed decisions. Within our design studios in Chicago & Dallas clients can see and experience several different finishes and details to learn what works well for them.

What is your mission as an interior designer?

To be the best at what we do. Our team is extremely vital in providing a high level of passion to each and every project. We are constantly learning new finishes & techniques and also levering new technologies to keep our firm cutting edge. The goal is to listen to the client to understand their needs and developing a program within our process that works well for them.

Why did you choose to base out of Chicago?

I was born and raised in Chicago and have a large passion for the city. We reside in the Museum Park Campus and our office & showroom are located within the Gallery District in River North. Chicago has a long-standing history with high-end architecture and many of the most prestigious designers & architects have made a mark on this city. We look forward to building on this and leaving a legacy. Our commitment to our clients has taken us to multiple cities in the US including Dallas & South Florida where we have current projects underway.

What kind of projects are on the horizon for the firm?

We perform a great deal of high-rise work and specialize in combining residences starting with an amazing space plan. Our boutique firm is growing and we look forward to taking on a more significant role in full concept to completion work. I feel clients are finding a great deal of value in this as we are able to assess and advise the clients throughout this process & journey. We are currently working on about 10 projects which are in the Gold Coast, River North, and Streeterville in Chicago, and a couple of projects in Miami, and one in Dallas. Anything that we can make an authentic stamp on for our clients. I could not be more excited about the launch of our digital art system Apollo. This is coupling high design with amazing proprietary technology & world-renowned artists. Stay tuned for this as we gear up for our launch.

What do you do when there’s not a client- I mean no one to specifically design for- when staging a home to be sold? The answer, of course, is that you have to invent a story. I found this out when I was asked to stage this home for a prominent developer here in Miami, Florida.

There is a reason why today’s hottest architects and interior designers are referred to as starchitects and design celebs. Their designs are just spectacular. Enter 835 E Dilido Dr. Created by the renowned firm Design Solutions and award-winning interior designer Luciana Fragali, the home is an oasis of luxury in Miami’s Venetian Island neighborhood.

This magnificent Venetian Islands estate has 99 feet of Biscayne Bay frontage, showcased by 12-foot-high retractable Vitrocsa windows that blur the line between inside and out. The sweeping, open-plan interior leads directly to deep terraces, a zero-edge pool with an integrated spa, a cabana kitchen, and an Ipe wood dock.

Inside the beautiful form and exceptional function continues. Rich materials and bespoke details make the large, 7, 112 sq. ft. home feel handcrafted and intimate. The home’s concept—neutral and layered—was informed by Fragali’s Brazilian heritage.

“A lot of my inspirations come from Brazil,” she says, “which I think is the design capital of the world—I’m proud of my people.” But she adds that she’s over the rustic finishes that many associate with the country’s aesthetic. Fragali counts on Brazilian designers such as Jader Almeida as inspirations and this home was no exception. Generous spaces set the stage to showcase custom pieces by Jader Almeida, making this home truly unlike no other. Though with regard to this Venetian Island project, their influence is hard to discern except around the edges: Design/Solutions is doing something all its own.

“I always advise clients to go neutral for big spaces, so they don’t get bored,” Fragali says. So when it came to designing this home, color was saved for accessories, which could be mixed and matched and rotated. Fragali knew that the concept needed an injection of warmth through texture, artwork, curtains, and accessories. These accessories are used to elevate the design and functionality of this modern yet comfortable living space.

Even within its limited palette, the family room carries mighty visual interest—and coziness. The TV hangs from a rich marble wall with a matte finish, above a custom floating shelve. The walnut wood backing for the marble slab features a simplistic design and exudes the warmth that was the designer’s goal. The beige sofa and black accent chairs are from Jader Almeida.

The living room is a variation on the theme, perhaps a shade more formal. Another Jader Almeida sofa appears, the orthogonal design of the elevated base of turned feet with continuous seat and the large feather pillows, attract for a pleasant experience in the living environment. The Basic sofa is an expression of the signature of contemporary design. Wooden Easy armchairs back up against the million-dollar water view, while six Jader Almeida pendants frame the dining room table creating an aesthetic that is both industrial and sophisticated.

The large office features a privacy glass feature and private bath, with courtyard views. Upstairs, two guest rooms feature wide bay views, in addition to the secluded master suite which also offers two balconies, an Ornare closet, and a private gym.

Most of the living areas are connected to the outdoors via significant entryways and doors. Lighting, planting, paint and finishes were added to outdoor areas to entice outdoor living. Using worldly influences in selecting lighting and furnishings, one feels touched by a timeless embrace.

The Kitchen is both warm and clean, using warm white lacquer painted cabinets, seeded glass door, wrought iron hardware, and built-up crown molding. Tropical mosaic tile and slate is used for the backsplash. Jule added corbels to accent the café seating area, and classic and understated light fixtures. The table is hammered copper, slightly patina’s, then sealed.

The Sitting Room and Dining Rooms are adjacent to the entry courtyard. Jule customized the fireplace and ceiling to create a warm and inviting area, with a custom settee-chaise, wrought iron & glass lighting, and detailed accents. The dining table was custom made to ground the dining chairs from West Elm.

Editor's Note: Haute Design partner Jule Lucero worked closely with the owners and builder to customize this Tropical Inspired Mediterranean home. Jule remodeled the entire home, customizing each area for the couple's lifestyle.

The Master Suite consists of a private entrance, foyer vestibule, spa bathroom, walk-in closet, living area, bedroom and private lanai. Featured here, the master bedroom and bath create a clean, fresh, open, yet warm interior to become a soothing respite to the private, spa-like lanai.

I completely remodeled the existing layout, creating an open layout and spaces that have an effortless flow, architectural details that are practical, yet sensual. Removing the wall between the bedroom and living area, I designed a gentle arching opening held by linen drapes, and a central double-sided fireplace with a media screen above. The vaulted ceiling was created with distressed rafters, specialty AV, and ethnic ceiling fans. The floors are custom, espresso-stained wide plank white oak by a local craftsman. I added sconce lighting on either side of the linen headboard, to accent the soft, soothing gray Benjamin Moore painted wall. The furnishings are a collection of found and refinished vintage pieces, Restoration Hardware, and custom designs. The bedding is a cool linen, in soothing greys and creams.

The Master Bathroom was completely redone with a new layout, to feature a modern sculptural soaking tub in front of a custom Indonesian teak screen to soften the intense southern exposure and add a contrasting background. I selected a brushed finish for the limestone flooring. The light fixtures were sourced from Morocco, and the electrical components were installed locally for code compliance. The custom-designed shelving units of either side of the tub create accessible niches for bathing supplies and ambiance.

Also in this bathroom, are his and her vanities, a steam shower with aromatherapy, and a private toilet room. Adjacent to the master bath, is a customized walk-in dressing suite. I removed a few walls in this closet to create an organized and Boutique mood for this shared room. This island was custom-designed to include locking jewelry drawers and pull out laundry hampers. I designed the open closet system was designed to organize the couple while creating an ambiance worthy of their taste.

As a second home to this local Hawaiian couple, they wanted a custom environment that was modern, clean, yet warm and inviting, and utilized the Koa wood flooring that was a gift from a family member.

Additionally, the homeowners had survived a hurricane in 1992, and wanted a home that was designed and built to withstand a storm, while also being open to views, natural breezes and embraced the outdoors with open-air living areas.

I created a design to incorporate the requests, with custom furnishings and architectural details which behold a classic tropical atmosphere. With contracting woods for the media cabinet, coffered ceiling and furnishings, I was able to complement the Koa wood with lighter finishes of beech wood, maple, limestone, and luminous plaster.

Creating finish details, such as a custom linen and silk throw for the chaise, a custom rug to become a piece of modern art and a built-in settee for the game room, have brought forth a truly custom home for this client.

Editor's Note: Haute Design partner Jule Lucero worked closely with the owners and architect of this Hawaiian oasis to create a modern, yet inviting home.

This house sits on the East facing hillside of Lanikai, the prestigious, yet quaint town in Kailua, on the island of Oahu. The house had experienced some damage from the elements due to a leaking roof, windows and doors. The owners wanted a home which embraced the vast views of the Pacific, the tropical sunlight, and the cool Tradewinds from the East. In addition, the home owners requested an environment for evening entertaining, and an inspiring artists atmosphere.

Jule created a design concept that speaks to the modern architecture, the tropical geography, and the easy, elegant lifestyle of the homeowners. Maple flooring with a water-based sealer was used throughout the main level, which is offset with Basalt-like, Absolute Black tiles for the entry, with a flamed finish, which grounded the modern materials with the rustic architectural concrete walls.

For the kitchen, Jule created an open, yet functional layout. She selected a green Limestone for the counter, fresh white cabinets, matte green glass tile, and stainless steel. The windows were replaced with wide Jalousie and Awning style to invite in the cooling trade winds. The doors were replaced with glass sliders and sidelights in a warm grey, almost white. Heavy interior columns were replaced with minimal steel posts to maximize the open concept between spaces. The ceiling was redesigned to incorporate a new skylight to ease the light level contrasts, and a washed wood tambour between the painted rafters.

The adjacent dining room is the center of the main floor. Jule created a focal wall on the opposite side of the dining buffet wall, which ends short of the ceiling, again, to invite lighting and airflow. For the furnishings, Jule selected contrasting materials & textures with elegant lines. The result is an atmosphere which is timeless, classic, elegant and inviting.

The project at Casa Del Mar was part of a complete gut out renovation of a 1960’s-era condo in beautiful Key Biscayne, Florida with a stunning ocean view.

The clients, a family of five, wished for a large, welcoming, functional space to entertain guests; add a room with a private bathroom, and seamlessly integrate the kitchen with the living and dining areas.

Our goal was to transform the outdated, closed-off kitchen into a lively flowing space where the family and their guests could enjoy the view and each other’s company. The challenge to transform the closed floor plan into an open, integrated space was further complicated by the aging building and outdated plumbing, A/C and electrical ductwork, as well as the elevator lobby.

Also, extant in the space were structural columns that could not be removed, resulting in a chaotic, narrow, L-shaped kitchen layout with limited storage. We designed a curved wall dressed with wood mosaic connecting the foyer and living area to the kitchen, softening the harsh, constrained angles of the original layout and laying the groundwork for a motive of curves and circles which carried throughout our design.

To maximize storage and spaciousness, we camouflaged appliances behind false doors, grouping the tallest appliances together to achieve balance and flow. In lieu of an island for the kitchen, we added a dining table in the center of the design, allowing the client to fulfill their passion for entertaining while integrating the social spaces of the residence with the functional space of the kitchen.

A large yet delicate sculptural chandelier continued to explore this sense of curvature and transparency. Through a game of proportions, scale, and continuity, we transformed a small, outdated space into a contemporary retreat perfect for a dinner party with a spectacular ocean view.

It is particularly inspiring when you enter a home as beautiful as the latest project by architect and designer Raquel Mothé of Mothé Design.

This recently-constructed 7,000-square foot vacation retreat is located in Harbor Beach, one of Fort Lauderdale’s oldest neighborhoods that has stood the test of time thanks to its desirable location and exquisite real estate.

The owner asked Mothé for a "pristine, clean, transitional-style home that approaches contemporary, but is warmed up and softened by well-placed curves.” Mothé delivered that and more on this, one of her greatest designs.

“It’s like a surprise,” Mothé says about the facade's white color, concealing of what awaits inside. “Outside, it’s a white house, but when that front door opens, you are instantly captivated by the ‘wow’ factor.”

The contemporary interior design welcomes the eyes first. Then the water. And then the yachts docked at Pier 66 Marina across the Intracoastal Waterway. “Everything is aligned to that view,” says Mothé.

Throughout the house, shades of white-to-gray fabrics adorn the walls, giving a touch of symmetry to the multiple rooms and spaces.

The home’s inviting and overall feel is not by mistake. “I wanted something that flowed and would appeal to everyone’s taste,” says the client.

A grand, custom-designed, curving, glass edged in stainless steel staircase is a work of engineering art by itself. It has marble treads that connect the flooring of both upstairs and downstairs.

Tone

Mothé set the tone of the house with the layout and furniture grouping. She looked to create a “cozy and intimate” impression in the living room, with effortless passage to the kitchen, bar, and dining area.

The living room has a circular cocktail table topped in black glass; a large leather sofa; and a pair of comfortable, rounded armchairs. These lay on top of a dark-gray rug made of silk and viscose.

The master bedroom and suite bath have large panels and a generous window that lets the natural light in.

The view and effect of the master bedroom are a favorite of the client. “When I’m in my bedroom, I feel like I’m in a penthouse,” the client says. “It has an incredible view with everything oriented toward the water.”

Outside, an infinity-edged pool is a straight-lined oasis, complete with a seating ledge to lounge on and watch the aforementioned yachts. Fort Lauderdale, Florida luxury lifestyle does not get better than this.

H2O

Water was an ever-present feature in the development of the house. "The water is what grabs you, wherever you are in the home," says the client in appreciation of Mothé's talent.

Mothé is known for implementing neutral schemes on her projects. "With an understanding of both the structure and architecture as well as interior design, a home comes together better and is more cohesive,” she says.

This one came together quite well.

Editor's Note: Step into the kitchen with Susan Rocco of The Kitchenworks, who talks to Haute Design about reviving the kitchen of a Spanish Colonial home.

From the moment you enter this sprawling Spanish Colonial home, almost a hundred years old in age, you are transported to decades past. You are enveloped with curiosity and admiration for the essence that makes this home a bridge between the here and now and the heyday of a 1920’s South Beach. This home evokes the wonder and desire of "if walls could talk." You can’t help but conjure visions of what life might have been like with each passing decade and the lives this home has seen.

When the new homeowners undertook the kitchen remodel, their primary goal was for the new kitchen to hold the same undeniable magnetism. They approached our firm with a very specific vision of details that drew from deco and Spanish influences. The palette envisioned would complement the warmth and richness of the natural materials employed through the home as well as feel like an extension of its glamorous character and coastal proximity. Under the design direction and project management of our very own Oscar Corona, their new kitchen was everything they had hoped for and more.

The custom pattern of the cabinet door style is reminiscent of the stepped outlines in art deco architecture. The sink wall is free of wall cabinets for simplicity. The interest and detail of the cabinet doors are balanced by their colors, which steer the design into a timeless and neutral take on deco decadence. A deep shade of navy is used for the tall cabinetry and the island, adding elegance and a subtle reminder that this home is steps away from the ocean. The appliances are from Dacor’s Modernist Collection. This new collection of graphite stainless steel appliances lends itself to be seamlessly integrated into the design, both physically and visually. The commanding visual presence of the dark cabinetry and appliances is contrasted by off-white cabinetry along the perimeter. These brighten the edge of the room, enhancing the feeling of spaciousness. Above, open wood shelves in a custom finish, to match the floor, heighten the sense of lightness and openness while adding Old World charm. Undoubtedly, the focal point is the hand-painted tile that borders the island, almost like a carpet, continuing on the floor up to the cooktop and over on the hood wall. This design statement is kept to one section. All else recedes in elegant restraint to allow this gesture to become the dramatic, focal point of the kitchen.

Through meticulous execution of details and finishes, careful thought and creative design, we were able to bring to life a kitchen of simultaneous striking singularity and retro nostalgia. It is a kitchen that feels organic to the original home and becoming of the present day.

Editor’s Note: Giselle Loor and Brett Sugerman of B+G Design have been married almost as long as they have been working together. Today, we celebrate past, present and future highlights of this interior design power couple of Haute Design.

In 2006, Loor and Sugerman founded B+G Design, which has become an award-winning interior design firm. Based in South Florida, the couple is regarded by their clients as experts in architectural design and interiors.

Balancing a life together, personal and business, day in and day out has brought Brett and Giselle success and a long marriage.

“Brett and I have been working together for over eighteen years,” says Giselle Loor. “We are constantly evolving how we operate our business, the relationship we have with our clients, staff and our community. It’s an ever-changing world and business, but what remains constant is the love we have for design—the passion we bring to every project we create. We call these projects our ‘design babies’ because they are created together and with so much love.”

B+G Design has been behind some of Haute Design’s most popular showcases, including this magnificent modern home.

In terms of love, “Love isn’t always perfect. It isn’t a fairytale or a storybook, and it doesn’t always come easy,” says Loor sensitively. “Love is overcoming obstacles, facing challenges, fighting to be together, holding on and never letting go. It is a short word, easy to spell, difficult to define and impossible to live without. Love is work but most of all love is realizing that every hour, every minute and every second was worth it because you did it together.”

Sugerman’s heartwarming tribute about his wife on this, their 12th wedding anniversary: “I realize that in the years before I met Giselle, I was designing with ‘one arm tied behind my back’,” he says. “After a short time working together, our chemistry was undeniable, as was the evolution of our design. We sparked something in each other & continue to do so to this day. After more than 18 years of partnership and now 12 as husband and wife, I couldn’t imagine life any other way, nor would I want to! I always tell Giselle that I am the luckiest guy in the world, and even during the most challenging of times, I feel the same way with her by my side.”

Recognition and Features of B+G Design

Their work has been featured on NBC, CBS and HGTV, as well as some of the leading luxury publications in the world.

Keeping up their success is the news that they will be included in this year’s Casacor Miami, the exhibition of architecture, interior and landscaping design taking place November 30 through December 16 in Miami’s Brickell City Centre. “We are thrilled,” says Loor.

Editor's Note: A touch of class is always felt by anyone that has McKinlay Rose Interiors work on their home. Haute Design by Haute Residence caught up with McKinlay Rose to highlight their latest project in Downtown Tampa.

Tampa-based designers McKinlay Rose Interiors just finished a magnificent project in Downtown Tampa. This high rise condominium has had a complete renovation and redesign of the residential space. The homeowner’s personal lifestyle was echoed in the project, and it is reflected and perfectly accompanied by the spectacular city landscape and waterfront views.

Modern and glistening light fixtures, textured shimmering wallpaper, and furnishings with an antique touch were added for an elegant and eclectic décor. The homeowners have original works of art throughout the apartment. These harmonize with McKinlay Rose’s rich work on the unit.

The walls were colored with neutral tones with purpose. For their part, the bejeweled elements add the glamour to the living spaces.

The windows made of glass and traveling from floor to ceiling allow the owners and their guests to enjoy the open vista. The apartment’s seamless glass sliders give easy access to step out into the spacious and multi-directional balcony.
