While 25 Verde is visually arresting, beauty is not the project's chief objective—environmental consciousness is. The building utilizes geothermal energy for heating and cooling, harvests rainwater to care for the various species of plants and shrubs that adorn it. The greenery will produce 150,000 liters of oxygen per hour and absorb 200,000 liters of carbon dioxide per hour at night. Additionally, The 150 trees that coexist with 25 Verde's wood and steel facade will protect residents from noise and air pollution.

Aesthetically, 25 Verde is said to provide an enchanted oasis on an otherwise tedious block. Rather than gutters, one sees carefully wrought tree-branches. Instead of window boxes, Pia has opted to let foliage run wild. Residents of top-floor apartments will have access to private green roofs.

Sims and her husband Scott Stuber live in a colonial-style home in Beverly Hills, California, which Sims redecorated with help from interior designer Kishani Perera. Notable design choices include Christopher Farr drapery, vases by En Soie, and tie-dye pillows by Perera, as well as baby furniture and accessories from 3 Sprouts, Aden + Ananis, and Rikshaw Designs. The couples boasts an impressive art collection that ranges from Slim Aarons photography to prints by Damien Hirst.

In addition to her California home, Sims has properties in Paris, Cabo San Lucas, the Hamptons, and Manhattan. "When I bought my apartment in New York, I couldn't afford it, but I've never been able to afford anything I've bought," the  author of the Everyday Supermodel told Lonny.

As far as her property collection goes, Sims is not quite through. She is quoted as saying that she and Stuber are "never done" buying homes, so we suspect that she'll be adding to her cache of real estate gems once again very soon.

Standing over 15 feet high, the 130-square-foot cabin is comprised of 13 wooden boxes held together with bolts and straps. The building-block structure allows the cabin an adaptive design and a rigidity that other temporary shelters lack.

Campers use handmade driftwood ladders to climb between bunks and boxes and can warm themselves by what Inhabitat calls a "slightly alarming" fire.

The SALT festival started in Northern Norway and will travel through Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, Scotland, Spitsbergen, Alaska, and Russia over the next few years.

At the hands of a dozen designers and builders, the kennel took six weeks to complete and was given away to the winner of a social media contest that ran through March 2, 2015.

According to Fortune, the project followed careful research into the desires of dog owners by Andy Griffiths, president of Samsung Electronics U.K. Of 1,5000 dog owners surveyed, Samsung found that "a quarter of them wanted their pets to have their own treadmill, as well as a tablet or TV. Of the dog owners surveyed, 64% believed their pets would benefit from more technology and gadgets, and 18% said they’d like their furry companion to have its own hot tub."

The resort, named Playa Grande Beach Club, follows Dominican vernacular architecture, which means patterned woodwork, metal roofs, and hardware suited to age and patina distinguish the property.

A 22-foot-high central clubhouse grounds the property and features a great room with locally produced furnishings and accessories.

An attractive eclecticism marks the resort's interiors; vintage finds complement Kemble's custom designs, while walls and ceilings are painted tranquil, tropical colors.

Other designers featured at Playa Grande are D. Porthault, Casamidy and New Jersey Barn Co.

Barbie's pied-à-terre is another notable work by Kemble. The designer runs Kemble Interiors with her mother, Mimi McMakin and younger sister Phoebe Kemble.

"Bloom" is notable for its use of an iron oxide-free Portland cement developed by Rael, which allowed him to make important headway in the utility of 3D printing. Normally a complicated and costly process, 3D printing became quick and cost effective when applied to Rael's polymer-cement formulation.

“While there are a handful of people currently experimenting with printing 3-D architecture, only a few are looking at 3-D printing with cement-based materials, and all are extruding wet cement through a nozzle to produce rough panels,” Rael told UC Berkeley. “We are mixing polymers with cement and fibers to produce very strong, lightweight, high-resolution parts on readily available equipment; it’s a very precise, yet frugal technique. This project is the genesis of a realistic, marketable process with the potential to transform the way we think about building a structure.”

With a footprint approximately 12 feet by 12 feet, the structure consists of 840 custom cement blocks that are durable, but intricate. They work in unison to produce images of flowers on Bloom's facade, hence its moniker. The delicate assembly allows light to permeate the pavilion in an attractive glowing effect.

Thailand's Siam Cement Group provided the cement, while additional materials came from Emerging Objects and Entropy Resins. After its debut, "Bloom" was disassembled and readied for shipment to Thailand, where it will be displayed for several months before beginning a global tour.

The 1000-square-foot pod sits directly on the water for 360-degree views from the living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom that comprise the WaterNest's default space. The design allows for unique immersion with nature.

The unit is powered by photovoltaic panels capable of generating 4kWp. In accordance with the occupant's needs, the pod's interior can be reconfigured. EcoFloLife imagines that "WaterNest" could accommodate both residential and commercial needs. "It is perfect like an ecological house, office, lounge bar, restaurant, shop or exhibition floating space," the company says on its website.

Italian architect Giancarlo Zema is responsible for the innovative design. Prioritizing sustainability, "WaterNest"—constructed out of reclaimed timber and aluminum hull—is 98% recyclable, and outfitted with ventilation and air-conditioning systems that classify it as a "low-consumption residential habitat."

"I was able to put a very positive spin on the sale. Every dollar of the purchase will go to the victims" said Maria Babaev, the Douglas Elliman agent on the listing.

While Curbed called the English-style Westbury house "rather hideous," Babaev attests it "has everything you could imagine."  By this, she means five bedrooms, a billiard room, gym, swimming pool, private tennis court, two-car garage. The home can also add a now notorious history the list of perks—it belonged to the Madoff family for more than 20 years. The property is just 25 miles east of Manhattan and has been on the market since 2011.

Peter Madoff is currently serving a 10-year sentence for aiding in his brother's Ponzi scheme. Bernie Madoff will serve for 150 years, the maximum allowed.

"The discussion about whether speed and handmade goes together or not is delicate," Nordberg tells Dezeen. "Many crafters really dislike speed, but for me it can be interesting. Speed is not the opposite of skill."

Nordberg succeeded in producing two armchairs with cushions, a small trolley, and a dining table with four chairs in the desired timeframe. She used hand tools to construct the pieces from pre-cut Valchromat engineered wood, locally sourced pre-cut pine, study clay that does not need firing, linseed oil, and lacquer.

"The design, materials, and details are all the result of the lack of time," says Nordberg. "For example–the coating does not cover the whole surface, details are few and imperfect, assembly screws are visible, and the design is restrained. This kind of aesthetic would never have occurred if I had had oceans of time."

In a video, David Radcliffe (Google's VP of Real Estate and Workplace Services), explains the company's philosophy in hiring Ingels and Heatherwick. Radcliffe calls BIG, Bjarke Ingles' firm, "ambitious," renowned for launching "community-focused projects." To Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, he attributes "attention to human scale and beauty." Together, the masterminds plan to reimagine Google's campus as an environmentally responsible Mountain View neighborhood as welcoming to unaffiliated residents as it is to Googlers.

Buildings, roads and natural areas will be amalgamated and in doing so, Ingels and Heatherwick hope to reenergize "a valley that's changed the world."

In order to accommodate Google's myriad projects, the new buildings will be translucent, mutable structures that the company will adjust according to its needs. The campus will accommodate bike and pedestrian paths, cafes and shops, as well as greenhouses and other ecologically-sensitive spaces.

With views of Central Park and midtown Manhattan,One57—whose jaw-dropping penthouse currently holds the title of most expensive ever sold in New York history—is the big man on a giant-packed campus.

French architect Christian de Portzamparc—who won a Prizker Architecture Prize in 1994—is the brains behind the 90-story operation, which will house a Park Hyatt hotel alongside its billionaire tenants.

#2: 3 Hudson Boulevard

A testament to sustainability, the 1,050-foot tower at 3 Hudson Boulevard complies with LEED Platinum standards and will use its glassy facade to generate over 800,000 KWh per year in power.

Though the development is designed for commercial purposes, up to 14 floors may be residential. When it is completed in 2018, the tower intends to bring Manhattan's Hudson Yards to new heights, environmentally and otherwise.

#3: 432 Park Avenue

Say hello to what will soon be the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Upon completion later this year, 432 Park will stand 1,396 feet tall and will offer residential units with price tags pushing $80 million.

With a lounge, restaurant, and an outdoor terrace, the tower will contend with residential spaces like 15 Central Park West and the Time Warner Center, which offer similar amenities.

#4: 400 Park Avenue South

Also by De Portzamparc, 400 Park Avenue South will open above NoMad later this year. It will feature 81 sleek condominiums with ceiling windows, a spin room, and a private screening room.

The tower has been in the works for over a decade, and is hotly anticipated in lower midtown. The project's 4,050 square-foot-penthouse is expected to list at $20 million.

#5 111 West 57th Street

Set to become the City's tallest (and skinniest) skyscraper, the 1,400-foot tower at 111 West 57th Street is taking over the Steinway building's park-side location (though the historic building's front facade and rotunda will be preserved).

Completion is estimated between 2017 and 2018 and will provide ample residential space above ground-floor retail. New York-based architecture firm SHoP has designed a gradually-narrowing skeleton for the building.

It will be called 22 Bishopgate, after its East London address, near Liverpool Street Station.

Lipton Rogers will take over the development of the site, while architectural charge will be given to PLP Architecture.

“The acquisition of 22 Bishopsgate represents a significant opportunity to purchase a prime office development site at one of the most desirable office locations in the City of London,” Anne Kavanagh, global head of asset management and transactions at Axa Real Estate, said in a statement.

TELUS aims for the Sky Tower to be the first building in the city to meet current LEED Platinum standards. By salvaging waste heat, utilizing triple-pane windows, allowing occupants climate-control via operable windows and providing a 100% fresh air supply, TELUS claims the Sky Tower will require 35% less energy than comparable structures do, and will "reduce CO2 emissions by over 395,000 kgs annually, equivalent to planting 158,000 trees a year," according to the company's website.

Tenants of the eco-friendly building will have access to bike parking, lockers and showers.

The Canadian design firm DIALOG also has a hand in the design.

Air-conditioned bridges with moving floors will link the towers, which will be taken up by offices and hotels. The bridges will evoke exotic marine life, while a tower may take the shape of Aladdin's magic lamp.

Even barring the Arabian Nights-inspired development, Dubai's city-planning schemes are beyond grand. A 150-meter high, 93-meter wide monument to be known as the "Dubai Frame" is also presently underway, along with the construction of the Desert Rose, an $8.2 billion "satellite city" with housing for 160,000 people, slated to begin next year.

"You need five or six different factories [to produce conventional upholstered furniture]. But with 3D printing you can produce very locally and you don't have material waste in the process; you use only the material you need," van Daal explained in this movie for Dezeen.

The chair is named for its imitation of natural constructs, like plant cells, whose essential forms serve their functions. Van Daal studied the densities of materials, noting how their varying distributions affected structural strength. With 3D nylon, van Daal was able to grow the piece to operate as chairs ought to — flexibly.

Passive aspects were incorporated into the construction to contribute light and warmth to the space, whose temperature is regulated by the clay roofing and facades. This process is aided by an air/water pump, which harvests and distributes waste. All of these features can be controlled remotely and are mutable enough to suit a growing family.

Livability was crucial in designing the futuristic net-zero home. Bedrooms and office spaces face forested area and admit light via glass windows tinted for privacy. The living areas offer panoramic views of the village's polar setting, into whose natural beauty the design aims to integrate.

On its website, the Stockholm-based designers wrote: "'Robochop' envisions a not-so-distant future where smart systems empower citizens to directly engage with heavy industrial fabrication technology." The project is an entry in CODE_n, a global innovation platform.

When users access the app, they create an individualized design for the robot. The system converts the design into a file which is transmitted to the robot. The robot then uses a needle gripper to remove a foam block from storage and a hot cutting wire for the sculpting process. The finished products are then packaged and sent to their designers.

The installation will run from March 16 to 20, online and in Hanover.

This is Reed Kram's and Clemens Weisshaar's second tryst with interactive robotics. In 2010, the duo debuted a system that allowed users to trace light patterns with six robotic arms.

The 40-foot-wide mansion at 125 East 70th Street in Manhattan went on the market for $46 million in 2013. Originally, the house belonged to the late Bunny Mellon—from whom it received its moniker—and her husband, Paul.

Paul was a horse breeder, philanthropist and co-heir to the Mellon banking fortune; Bunny was the horticulturist responsible for the White House's Rose Garden. The new residents of their Upper East Side estate are Clark, the 70-year-old cofounder of Netscape, and his 35-year-old fourth wife, Australian Victoria's Secret model Kristy Hinze. Clark was deemed the "comeback billionaire" after a fruitful bet on Apple restored him to the Forbes list in 2012.

With 14 rooms and 11,100 square feet decorated in Neoclassic French style, the house is by today's standards both an opulent statement piece and a historic relic. Together, the Mellons collected and donated more than a thousand works of art, some of which hung in the library of the mansion. To describe her taste, Bunny Mellon was known to have coined the adage, "nothing should be noticed."

The house's exterior boasts a private garden with reflecting pool and gazebo, which can be seen from the beloved library. Inside are eight bedrooms, eight-and-a half-bathrooms, a chef's kitchen, wine room, study, library, and staff's quarters. Three stunning exposures admit sunshine.

Clark is said to have purchased the townhouse from Irish businessman Tony White and his wife Clare, who shelled out $22.5 million for the property back in 2006.

"There is a strange mystery that occurs when these pieces are filled with light," Bocci creative director Omer Arbel told Dezeen, which revealed the mechanisms for Arbel's mystery: using pressurized gas, molten glass is forced into heat-resistant ceramic fabric shells in each of which the designers place an LED light.

When the lights are turned on, the lamps transform into "more than both glass and fabric... something new entirely," Arbel puts it. To viewers, their distinct and natural forms appear like clouds.

Bocci hung the 73 to descend in clusters, but a second rendition with lamps fixed flat against the ceiling may be underway.

In an earlier exhibition, Bocci garnered attention for the colorful chandelier it installed at London's V&A.

The Mediterranean-style property is part of a gated community. The estate grounds—which have city and ocean views—feature a pool and spa, fire pit, and outdoor kitchen. Inside are four bedrooms, seven baths, an 850-square-foot gym, hair salon, and in-home theatre with lobby, and a wet bar. Reportedly, when he is in Orange County, Bryant commutes from home to work via helicopter.

Bryant tore his rotator cuff in a game against the New Orleans Pelicans on January. Five days later, the Lakers announced he would be out for the rest of the season.

Before Schallerton inherited the property, it was dodgy. But Schallerton saw potential in the walkup.

This was where the innovative LEGO strategy came in—to use the facets of the apartment, the occupant must build them. When the apartment is not assembled, it remains an empty space. When engaged, the apartment comes to life.

Clickable cabinets line one side of the space. These spring-loaded compartments open to reveal a kitchen, refrigerator, closet space and room for sports equipment. To cook or have lunch, a table folds down from the opposite wall and to rest on a pillar-shaped support.

The bed is stored underground, but slides trundle-like from beneath the patio. Halfway revealed, the mattress functions as a daybed from which a full-motion mounted television can be seen.

While hiding seems the design's chief philosophy, the bathroom is all about show-and-tell. A glass box stands on one end of the apartment, containing a sink and shower head. Luckily, the toilet is tucked away.

In a video, Schallerton credited his trim physique to his "active apartment." He has since moved out — after entering a relationship, Schallerton found the pad unsuitable for two.

The asking price for her former stomping (or better said, "twerking,") grounds is $5.995 million, $157,000 more than the Cyrus family paid for the 8,700-square-foot California property. The former Disney princess moved out when she was 18, but vestiges of her occupancy include skateboard ramps, a guitar showroom, an in-home theatre, and an outdoor entertainment area and pool for entertaining.

The home—located in the affluent Los Angeles neighborhood of Toluca Lake—was constructed in the style of Tuscan-revival and features a copper gutters, a Juliet balcony, wrought-iron accents, and a red clay tile roof. Visitors enter via a tree-lined brick driveway that comes to a head at a three-car garage and motor court. Palm trees and shrubs provide ample landscaping.

Whether the home belongs to Miley or to Billy Ray—her country-music star father, and his wife Tish—is unclear. Miley is reported to have returned to the home with her then-fiancé Liam Hemsworth after her initial departure. She owns at least one other property in Southern California.

Plans for TIAA Henderson Real Estate's "Can of Ham" skyscraper in London were stalled for the last six years. According to the trade journal Construction News, a pre-construction deal with the building contractor Mace has put the Can back on track.

The building proposed for 60-70 Street Mary Axe received its moniker due to its odd shape, which resembles the tins of canned meat that passed as sustenance during WWII. When completed, the Can will comprise 24 stories and 26,000 square meters of office space.

"The height and form of the building have been developed to create a distinctive form in response to local views," explained Foggo Associates, the firm behind the design. Foggo is named for Peter Foggo, its founder and a former Arup Associates partner. The building's contract is reported to be in excess of €100 million.

If and when the "Can" is constructed, it will join structures like the Scalpel (52 Lime Street), the Cheesegrater (the Leadenhall Building), and the Walkie Talkie (20 Fenchurch Street) on London's skyline. According to The Daily Mail, these are only four of the 236 skyscrapers projected to go up in London. Like the Can, other projects were delayed previously due to the global financial crisis.

The ranch's water rights distinguish it in rural Colorado real estate. The water comes from spring-fed creek and a 30-percent share in a consolidated reservoir.

"Although it is some of the most spectacular land and views I have ever experienced, my schedule with racing and my kids just does not allow us to enjoy the property," Gordon said in a statement. In earlier phases, Gordon enjoyed snowmobiling at the estate with his friends. The racer—who plans to retire after the 2015 NASCAR season—bought the ranch for $9 million in 2006. In 2013, the famed driver sold a Central Park West apartment for $25 million.

The Gordon family now resides in a massive house in Charlotte, North Carolina, where NASCAR's secondary headquarters are located.

The steel tycoon intends to raze the adjacent brownstones, which are located between Madison and Fifth avenues, and construct a single magnificent mansion to stand in their place, where he will presumably live with his girlfriend, Dasha Zhukova (the mother of two of his seven children). Talks with New York's landmarks preservation committee are underway.

Purportedly, Abramovich considered purchasing 9 East 75th Street, but was deterred by rent-stabilized tenants: a class that has given him trouble in the past. In 2012, Abramovich sought a $75 million co-op at 825 Fifth Avenue before a wealthy widow and the co-op's owner contested the sale. On February 23rd, public records revealed that 9 E. 75th was purchased by another buyer for $17.9 million.

Abramovich—who grew up an orphan, only to become one of the wealthiest individuals on the planet—owns homes all over the globe, including in London, St. Barths, Cap d'Antibes, and Snowmass. Boasting a net worth of $9.5 billion as of 2014, he also commands several yachts on top of the Chelsea Football Club, which plays in England's Premier League.

The estate sits on 4.75 stunning hillside acre  and features a gourmet kitchen designed by Wolfgang Puck, a master ocean-view suite, a state-of-the-art home theater, and a horseback riding area that boasts a nine-stall barn. It is situated close to riding trails.

Reportedly, the projected monthly mortgage on Grammer's Malibu property is $53,941, nearly $30,000 more than the rate on the ex-couple's large Colorado cabin, which is listed at $6.995 million.

All the objects in the collection are made in Italy, but inspired by the various eating traditions by which the young Fabrica designers were reared.

Fabrica collaborated with the Italian design brand Atipico on the project.

""The table is the perfect place for meeting up. At Fabrica, place of exchange and interchange par excellence, we love to mix our different cultures and backgrounds to create design projects which are a pure manifestation of the daily creative work and which become a source of personal growth and enrichment for our residents," said Sam Baron, Fabrica's creative director.

Fabrica residents come from China, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Morocco and Scotland, to name a few. A set of glasses resembles Japanese tea cups; an aperitif set encourages Indian-style food sampling; a cutting board is ridged like a round of Italian schiacciatina bread.

Together, the objects transcend their cultural derivatives to form a cohesive set. At the same time, the pieces highlight diverse customs by way of multi-functionality. Ceramic, wood, metal, glass and fabric were used for the collection, which includes linens, crockery and kitchen equipment, too. Part of the Benetton Group, Fabrica is based in Treviso and offers scholarships to young creatives from all over the world.

The collection will be on view at Maison & Objet from January 23 to January 27.

Entitled "Airspace," the exhibition showcases pieces from two collections: three works from "cut_paste"—intended to evoke a construction-site aura—and seven from "PdT," which features works that evoke ruins.

"These are two strongly contrasting but complementary series of objects inspired by the history of architecture and the art of construction through time," the designer told Dezeen. Stadler's pieces are sculptural, but are designed to function simultaneously as contemporary furniture.

As its name suggests, "cut_paste" harmonizes mismatched materials like marble and aluminum honeycomb to form angular pieces like a shelf, sideboard, bench, bookcase and table. On the other hand, PdT is characterized by softer limestone pieces and is named for "pierre de taille," a French phrase for masonry of large stones ("ashlar," in English).

"From certain angles the spectator looks through cut_paste and the background becomes a part of the perception of the piece. The air circulates through the objects," Stadler told Dezeen. "On the other side, the spectator's view is blocked by the massive presence of PdT and air must flow around it."

The exhibition will run from January 17th to April 4th at the Carpenters Workshop Gallery in Paris.

Constructed from ash wood reclaimed from the pests who sought to destroy it and the landfills to which it was destined, the stool serves Toronto's ecosystem. According to Agawin, more than 200,000 trees are razed annually in this area of Canada.

Inspired by traditional Japanese and Danish principles, Agawin incorporated modern techniques by using simple CNC—or computer numerical control—in the stool's production. In order to create the clean, even look of the wood, he utilized a paste of pure soap flakes and hot water—a traditional Danish technique.

The stool's exercise elements are awakened by the semi-spherical base under its seat, which will topple if the sitter does not keep it upright, hence the ab-workout required to perch there.

Should floor exercises be preferable, the seat and base can be removed.

Known as a "passive" house, the structure will be habitable without the use of air-conditioning or heating. In the winter, natural light will warm the southward-facing rooms; in the summertime, cross-ventilation will replace air-conditioning by way of corresponding northward and southward-facing windows. This is also aided by the shape of the home, which appears like a fan.

The home was designed in keeping with traditional Japanese principals like simplicity or reduction of clutter, naturalness and tranquility. The rooms are connected by open doorways and much of the interior—including a central staircase—is exposed wood.

The residents will grow their own vegetables in a garden designed by MDS for this purpose.

The impetus came from the client's personal history: he made his fortune from manufacturing micromotors.

"Xintiandi Penthouse" is largely an amalgam of sheet metal, weathered metal, and metal cabling. Wang utilized five kilometers of the latter and employed traditional boat-building techniques to do so. Much of this went to the penthouse's striking cantilever staircase.

The staircase was the centerpiece of the project and of Wang's Inside Festival submission. According to the entry, the function of the staircase is triadic. First, it envelopes a dining table, evoking a "'nest-like' environment." Second, it serves artistically as a sculptural installation. Third, it acts as a physical barrier between the dining and living areas.

Wang's bedrooms are also exceptional. They do not have windows. Instead, they are arranged along a hallway and fenced with one-way mirrors through which daylight can pass. Wang attributes this decision to the client's familial values.

Though the space retains an industrial ethos that is intentional, Wang believes she managed to "inject femininity into those materials that are traditionally very hard, by manipulating the form and also making them more digestible in terms of scale." Wood-grain etched concrete, walnut timber and Corten steel are all visible.

China's industrial history was an important inspiration for the project; however, Wang denies that the interior is "a pastiche of East-meets-West," crediting her ingenuity to her client's passions.

Inside Festival took place in Singapore from October 1-3, 2014. This year's festival will begin on November 4th, also in Singapore. Entries open in February.

Though Palazzo Grande (great palace in Italian) was erected in 2005, it is designed to evoke the 16th century baroque. In a press release, broker William P.D. Pierce said, "As you enter Palazzo Grande, it's as if you have been transported from Palm Beach to an old world Italian villa." Pierce is known for his prowess with luxury homes. He represents Miami's $65-million La Brisa, too.

Adding to the ethos are 40 chandeliers (30 of which are Czechoslovakian crystal), a 75-guest ballroom, and eight baths. 

Palazzo Grande's current owners are John and Amanda Termotto. The home has six bedrooms, a den, billiards rooms and guest quarters.

Palazzo Grande sits on 100 feet of lakefront land. Palm Beach Gardens is Northwest of the island of Palm Beach.

Snøhetta is working in conjunction with ZEB, Norway's Research Center on Zero Emission Buildings. The property's defining characteristic is its 19-degree slanting metal-clad roof that bears the structure's photovoltaic (a method of converting solar energy to direct current electricity) panels. Other amenities are a garden, an outdoor atrium with a fireplace, and a solar-heated pool.

The ZEB house is part of a continued effort to expand knowledge of "plus houses," structures that produce more energy than they consume. Despite the emphasis on efficiency, Snøhetta stresses the livable nature of the home, stating, "Emotive comfort and sense of wellbeing have governed the design process to the same extent as energy demands."

Gizmag reports that the house will produce 19,200 kWh per annum, but will only require 7,272 kWh, leaving a surplus of 18,473 kWh. The project has been nominated for The 2015 European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture. The pilot house is located near the Norwegian town of Larvik.

Snøhetta's other properties include President Obama's Hawaii Presidential Center (planning underway) and the National September 11 Memorial and Pavilion (2004-2014).

According to a ThyssenKrupp executive, "Per year, New York City office workers spend a cumulative amount of 16.6 years waiting for elevators, and 5.9 years in the elevators. This data provides how imperative it is to increase the availability of elevators." With the MULTI, ThyssenKrupp promises these office workers will never wait longer than 30 seconds for an elevator car's arrival.

The company compares the use of one-cabin elevator shafts to a one-car railway systems—i.e. if only one Acela ran between Washington and Boston. ThyssenKrupp considers this system patently obsolete, and sees innovation in elevator technology as a catalyst for more efficient and avant-garde urbanization (think Jigsaw-style skyscrapers and perfected towers of Pisa).

The planned test site for the MULTI is a 300-meter-high tower in Rottweil, Germany. The building is being constructed exclusively for ThyssenKrupp's experimentation, and will be converted later into Germany's highest viewing tower.

Should the elevator succeed, the effect will be less dumbwaiter and more metro system, with cars running along loops rather than in lines. The new shafts will be significantly smaller than the ones currently required by cable-strung elevators, but may accommodate twice the number of passengers. ThyssenKrupp calls the MULTI will be the most significant innovation in elevator technology since its invention in 1854. The claim is a bit of a stretch—elevators have been around in some capacity since 236 BC and a steam-powered version debuted in 1823—but the MULTI will be a marvel nonetheless.

ThyssenKrupp has competition from American company MagneMotion and Japanese Hitachi, which are working on cable-less and multi-cabin systems respectively.
