Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel with interior architecture by Thierry Despont, 53 West 53 features 145 residences ranging in size from one- to four-bedrooms, including full-floor homes and duplex penthouses with private elevators. The building’s tapering design and Nouvel’s signature exposed structural system, known as the diagrid, which means that the layout of each residence is completely unique.

“53 West 53 is an architectural masterpiece,” said David Penick, Managing Director at Hines. “We commissioned André Fu to design our first model residence because his modernist sensibilities complement Jean Nouvel’s completely unique architecture.”

"We took our inspiration of all the natural materials, textures and colors used throughout the building. Bold geometric forms can be found throughout the public areas, lots of wood paneling and wall treatments in corridors and the lounge areas and–of course--the views," said Bush.

"We also added a mix of reflected materials to capture the incredible light such as a mix of polished metals – brass, bronze and chrome, as well as different glass treatments, which can be found in the glass room dividers, candlesticks, foil backed wall coverings and mirrors. In the end, we wanted to create a balanced design of bold, colorful organic forms rendered in luxurious materials such as mohair, silk and wool, exotic woods, stone and handblown glass."

The entire residence is clad in rich texture, such as in the serene master bedroom, where layers of calming neutral tones complement the panoramic city and water views.

"I feel one of the show stopper pieces in the living room are the pair of colored contemporary glass Vela Screens by Bernhardt & Vella from Arflex.  These screens are made of laminated pastel colored glass panels in bold geometric forms attached by architectural brass brackets. They were a perfect addition to the living room furniture plan because they captured the incredible light of the 60th-floor residence while providing a stylish separation from the entry and the dining room," he said.

In a children's bedroom, a geometric Casa Kids bunk bed creates a playful atmosphere, bolstered by bright pops of unexpected color. Each room is an immersive experience that reflects the home's luxurious finishes and atmosphere.

But is this his first and last New York project? When we asked, he said, "well I’m originally from NY and all my family is there, so yes, of course, I hope to be doing more projects in New York soon. We are currently working on finishing up a crazy charming 3 story Houseboat getaway for myself and my partner on Long Island close to my family so it gets me back to New York several times a year."

What drew you to interior design?

I find interior design to be a truly creative environment. In the fashion industry, I was aiming to please the masses, but with interior design, I work one-on-one with a client, therefore I only have to please the client. I'm also selling my style. When a client approaches me, they've signed up for my aesthetic and my vision. Of course, I work with them taking into account, family, age practicality and personal preference, but with interior design, I'm me and what I provide is my creativity. For me, it's a more open creative process. There's no pecking order and I'm free to change, chop and play around with the space.

Describe your design approach and philosophy?

The best way to describe my philosophy is I design livable luxury. I want you to use the house. It's not a museum and I don't want my clients to worry about staining that crisp white leather sofa. Instead, I create a livable place that is also luxurious. Part of my process is editing. It's like doing a fashion show where you have 100 looks but need to narrow it down to 20. For me, I edit a house. I look at many bedrooms that are beautiful, but there's so much furniture that if you were to get up in the middle of the night, you'd trip on the way to the bathroom. When I'm designing, I think about every aspect of where I'm placing the furniture and if it's practical. I pride myself on ensuring each piece of furniture has its own space. Having space around something is important to my philosophy.

What inspired you when designing the 8J apartment at 196 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side?

I came to New York in 1990 for the first time and it was very different than what it is today. I was immediately attracted to the vibrant Lower East Side, so it was the perfect opportunity to incorporate that into 8J at 196 Orchard Street. When I think of the area, I think of Madonna and Blondie walking down the street with a dollar in their pocket. It's a romantic view, which shows in the ultra-suede walls I added and of course the Madonna art around the apartment. However, I also wanted to incorporate a bit of uptown as I wanted it to feel aspirational, so I went bigger in a smaller space to show that you can actually do that.

What draws you to military colors?

I like utility and masculinity. I also come from a career with Ralph Lauren so I like things that are authentic. Military fashion came from all things that were built for function, which means they have longevity. On Instagram, I'm about to show a whole room that is based on a black from a military tank. All these military colors represent bravery and comradery, which are elements that resonate with me as a person.

What trends do you see emerging in 2020?

I think there is a movement toward surrealism that will continue to grow. The eighties are definitely coming back, which I'm excited about, especially in furniture design. I'm telling my clients to by now because the pricing on these unique items will increase as it becomes more popular. I also think textures will be a focus. There will be a lot of textured walls, paneling, and other elements. I think the Scandinavian, minimalist grey is fading, allowing room for organic lines and a connection to the planet.

What are you working on right now?

I actually just bought a house in Southhampton right next to Georgina Bloomberg. I'm excited, it's going to be amazing. The house was built in 1972 and has a modernist feel with a lot of light.

100 Franklin Street features 10 private full-floor homes – including two duplex penthouses with expansive rooftop terraces – that utilize the buildings’ unique architecture through open and airy floor-through layouts accessed via direct elevator entry. Like other DDG projects, a strong connection to the arts is prevalent. The site was home to the recent large-scale mural by acclaimed international street artist J.R., and DDG has commissioned Paris-based artist and designer Charlotte Taylor to create new pieces that will be permanently installed within 100 Franklin Street.

The model residence presented by The Future Perfect was designed to invoke a spirit of graceful living by showcasing the beauty of architecture through works that are uniquely aligned to the vision for the space. Select pieces from The Future Perfect’s collectibles collection, including a coffee table by Chris Wolston and lighting fixtures by Charles De Lisle, set the tone. Portuguese luxury firm De La Espada's furniture is featured throughout and includes many objects from their roster of talented artists, such as Neri & Hu, Matthew Hilton, Luca Nichetto, Studioilse, and Jason Miller. The Swedish textile brand Kasthall provided the woven, hand-tufted, and one-of-a-kind rugs.

The drapery is from COPE, the newly formed textile studio from the bespoke wallpaper brand Calico. The art was curated by Katya Valevich and includes works by NYC based artists including zen-inspired handmade ceramics by Lana Kova, painted triptychs by Pajtim Osmanaj, and an encaustic sculpture by Lerone Wilson. Combined, these artworks complete the look and feel of the space and elevate the entire experience.

Alchemy Properties has paid homage to Frank Woolworth by restoring original details to reflect the building's glory days, including a $22M restoration of the striking terracotta facade, while simultaneously updating residences with modern-day conveniences; including a coffered ceiling that was restored and relocated from Frank W. Woolworth's private office. Additional amenities include the Gilbert Lounge and entertaining area, a wine cellar and tasting room, modern fitness center and fifty-foot lap pool.

The Belnord

The Belnord is an iconic Upper West Side landmark that occupies an entire city block bounded by West 86^th and 87^th Streets, Amsterdam Avenue and Broadway. Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the world-renowned architecture firm is overseeing the restoration of the original architecture and re-imagining the interiors for the residences. The Belnord is one of the greatest turn-of-the-century residential buildings, originally constructed in 1908 and designed by famed architecture firm Hiss & Weekes. The property's new design will feature 95 residences, ranging from two- to five-bedrooms, situated across 14 floors. In addition, 9,000 square feet of state-of-the-art amenities will be incorporated into the building, and many of The Belnord's hallmarks — including the courtyard and the exterior architecture are being restored to their original grandeur and updated.

The building which was built-in 1928, was formerly known as the Dorothy Gray Building and was once the headquarters of fashion house Gucci. The first three floors are currently occupied by a brand new flagship Coach retail store. Since the acquisition of the building, SHVO has also engaged international luxury hotel brand, Mandarin Oriental, to manage and service the residences. The residences are expected to reach completion by 2021.
