In the wake of the tiny home craze, Chilean architect Felipe Assadi has left his own mark on the latest in mobile housing trends. Take a peak into "Casa Remota—Remote House"—an 880-square-foot, prefabricated residence located 100 miles from Santiago. The unique home is constructed—seemingly miraculously—in just a number of hours. Forty-five offsite hours are dedicated to preparation, while the final six onsite hours are used to ensure customization.

“The project aims to enable the user to configure their own home based on modules and a system that allows connections between these capsules without further instructions,” said Assadi. In fact, the home has four 11- by 20-foot modules that can be arranged in whatever manner the owner choices, adding a level of personalization that simply cannot be rivaled. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit is made of wood, iron, glazed front and back facades, and is mounted on metal pillars in the ground. This little wonder, currently resting in the remote Pichicuy region overlooking the Pacific, has without-a-doubt redefined mobile housing.

Four decades ago, when Joyce Rey started out in real estate selling homes for the likes of Sonny and Cher, the most luxurious mansions in town would go for less than a million dollars. High-end home advertising involved a two-line notice, sans photo, in the classifieds section. Documents were hand-delivered by real estate agents who usually worked alone.

Rey now has five assistants. She and Stacy Gottula, her partner at Coldwell Banker Previews International, Estates Division, regularly deal with billionaires. Together, impeccably coiffed and fashionably dressed, they represent the currently most expensive home listing in the nation—the opulent, 25-acre, $195million Palazzo di Amore in Beverly Hills.

The estate—with its dozen bedrooms, 23 bathrooms, 27-car garage, vineyard, screening room, bowling alley and ocean views—is separated from the rest of the city by a quarter-mile of tree-lined driveway, seemingly transplanted from some magical corner of Provence. The palatial interior, aglow under glittering crystal chandeliers, is festooned with grand tapestries and gilded artwork.

Marketing such a property—where the 13,500 bottles of fine wine kept on site are considered a minor selling point—requires tact, creativity, and no small amount of capital, experts said.

Top real estate agents move in a tiny community, and image, reputation, and connections are everything. Their familiarity with extreme wealth soothes buyers, agents said. But it also allows them to screen out unwanted interest.

Rey and Gottula were given the Palazzo listing because of their previous track record, and because they had worked with its owner, real estate mogul Jeff Greene, on leasing the property to business people and prominent international families. Now, the partners open the house only to those with a private invitation or who have undergone a financial vetting process.

"You get a lot of looky-loos. A lot of these clients are very high profile and confidential," Stacy Gottula, a real estate agent of Coldwell Banker Previews International, said.

Ricky Martin has finally sold the Bond Street apartment he listed in November 2013. The three-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom residence—in a building developed by Ian Schrager—was originally listed for $8.3 million and sold for a reduced price of $7.55 million.

Martin still turned a profit on the home, however. He purchased the 2,637-square-foot pad in 2007 for $5.7 million. Luxurious 11-foot windows that stretch from floor to ceiling and beautiful oak floors are just a taste of all this space has to offer.

Joni Mitchell's Bel-Air estate, built in 1930, overlooks the Bel-Air Country Club. A Spanish-style home with six bedrooms, five bathrooms, and 6,560-square-feet of living space, the property was last sold for $350,000, on July 25, 1974, to Mitchell, and it sits hidden from the street on its own private drive.

Leonard Nimoy lived at 801 North Stone Canyon in Bel-Air and told The Wall Street Journal, when asked about his home: "When I bought my home in the Bel-Air section of Los Angeles in 1987, I was a little scared. I was single at the time—my marriage of 33 years had just ended—and I had been looking at modest places within a specific price range. My realtor had suggested we see a house that had just come on the market: a one-story, 5,500-square-foot, white-plaster Spanish-Mediterranean from the 1930s. I fell in love with it instantly. Le Petit Four

There is a special energy about Sunset Plaza that this restaurant perfectly captures for me. The white tablecloths, the patio so packed with tables that you feel like you are sharing with the diners next to you, and the delicious yet beautifully displayed food creates an environment that I am consistently drawn to. Inside, the restaurant is cheerfully lit and just as busy as the patio, and while the décor may be cozy and simple, the dishes are not. Intricate salads, pastas, and pizzas embody the most delicious flavors, and you can even order more exotic French dishes such as Boudin Noir, Steak Tartare, and Duck Confit. Of course, the meal isn’t complete without a slice of cake or Profiteroles, and my favorite part, a short walk up and down the best part of Sunset Boulevard.

Urth Café

If you ever ask me what my favorite restaurant is, I will always answer hands down Urth Café, specifically the one on Melrose. My ritual is to order a strong Spanish latte, regardless of the time of day, because it is just too good to not have. Recently I was there for an early dinner on a rainy Sunday evening, and after a fun hour of couch testing at Restoration Hardware, was miraculously able to sit outside under an umbrella in the pouring rain and be warm and dry. In addition to the fantastic food quality, the main reason I love Urth is because even if you are there for dinner at 9 p.m. on a Wednesday, it is always lively and packed, the candle lit tables lighting up the street and making you feel part of something special (or an episode of Entourage). My fondest memories there are of big family dinners out on the sidewalk lingering until 10 p.m. with just a few bites of delicious chocolate cake left on the table and feeling like I never want to leave.

Mercado

For fantastic Mexican food, fruity drinks, and a fun time, head over to Mercado but make sure to make a reservation beforehand because this is definitely the place to go when you’re with a group. Start with some of their guacamole and choriqueso duo and a margarita or another of their famous drinks.

Be sure to order a side of rice if your main dish doesn't come with it—it is to die for. You may either be seated in the bustling main dining room on a large high table or upstairs in a more private room for large parties. Either way, the energetic atmosphere is contagious and you will thoroughly enjoy yourself regardless.

Honorary knight, and former mayor of New York City, Michael Bloomberg, has reportedly purchased a historic mansion–which once belonged to female English writer George Eliot–overlooking London’s River Thames. The 73-year-old was apparently so infatuated with the grand home that he paid $26.5 million for it—a cool $1.6 million over asking price.

This purchase makes Bloomberg’s second in the area; he also owns a Knightsbridge mansion. Maybe now he will finally give in to pressure from British conservatives to become a citizen and run for mayor of London.

It is no surprise presidential-hopeful Donald Trump is making newspaper headlines this morning—but this time it’s for something his PR team won’t have to panic over. The real estate mogul and reality television star has just sold his New York City penthouse apartment for $21 million. The 6,200-square-foot home on the 24th floor of the 32-story Trump Park Tower was first listed in 2013 for $35 million.

Although Trump twice reduced the price of the elegant abode, he refused an offer to rent the space for $80,000 per month. The elaborate, five-bedroom, seven-and-a-half bathroom apartment—which Trump never occupied—features fine craftsmanship throughout. Italian brass doorknobs, custom moldings, and marble floors and countertops in the kitchen are just a taste of the extensive luxury offered here. The 26-year-old's unique product line is grabbing the attention of luxury buyers and corporations. He has just introduced innovative technology to a sector rarely regarded as cutting-edge—the furniture industry—and people are paying attention.

A Miami native with degrees in mechanical engineering and business administration from Northeastern University, Chaille serendipitously discovered a way for his passion for designing and constructing original works to collide with his enthusiasm for luxury cars. Studying design for over a decade eventually spurred his obsession with carbon fiber and “its unbound potential,” leading him to conduct years of intense research on the material. His work culminated in 2013, when he founded his business Chaille Industries.

An extremely expensive and time-consuming process, the creation of carbon fiber furniture is a multi-week process that begins with a simple client meeting. Chaille’s line of furniture, The Sans Pareil Collection, offers sleek, durable outdoor living pieces, but many of Chaille’s designs are custom creations to fit the vision and needs of his clients.

Characterizing his creations as “sleek, simple, and timeless,” Chaille, who grew up on the water, blatantly imbues his fascination with the outdoors in his designs. “The soft, fluid lines, simple curves, and a continuous flow to the pieces mimic those found in nature,” he says.

While consumers are willing to spend thousands on other luxury items, Chaille is confident his handcrafted works will also be popular among the wealthy, explaining the mentality behind owning something of such value in saying, “It is the same reason one would invest in an expensive car or a piece of art. You are investing in the longevity, the quality, the uniqueness, the craftsmanship, and the feeling. You are not simply purchasing a piece of furniture, but an exclusive experience.”

Below, Chaille explains the detailed process of custom creating carbon fiber furniture, from concept design to delivery:

"The process starts with studying. I study a variety of different industries to gain inspiration. I also find inspiration in nature and the shapes and curves of the human body. For the last piece, I studied things such as ergonomics and anatomy to gain better understanding of the human body and how it works.

I then begin the design process, hand-sketching hundreds of concepts before getting to my final design. I feel it is imperative to begin by drawing by hand versus using a computer program; there is a certain connection one feels when hand-sketching that cannot be fulfilled when using a 3-D program. Once the final design is chosen and the dimensions are finalized, it is imported to a 3-D computer program for further inspection and final analysis. A mold is created using the 3-D program as a template to ensure pinpoint accuracy. Once the mold is created and inspected, the furniture is ready to be constructed.

To start, carbon fiber sheets are carefully cut and laid into the mold. This is truly an art form. It takes several hours to lay the carbon fiber sheets in a way to ensure strength and rigidity in the areas needed. The sheets must be perfectly aligned for the pattern to be aesthetically flawless.

After the carbon fiber is laid into the mold, it is sealed and placed into an autoclave: a machine that bakes the piece under high pressure and heat to ensure the lightest, strongest and highest quality product is made. This process is extremely expensive and time-consuming, however, necessary in order to achieve the best result. Once the autoclave process is complete, the piece is inspected for minor flaws and inconsistencies in the weave. Once approved, it is sent to the painting area.

Each piece is hand-painted to the client’s requests. This paint process takes over 40 man hours to complete. The piece is hand-sanded and painted multiple times to get a finished product displaying the highest quality finish. It is difficult to properly execute this task. Ensuring the carbon fiber is not damaged in the process takes great finesse and skill.

Once the paint process is complete, the quality control department reviews each piece with strict guidelines before being approved for final delivery.

Every now and then, I’ll tell a story to someone about something funny, strange or outright weird that occurred in the course of my real estate days. Invariably I’ll hear, “I bet you could write a book!” Well, maybe one day. Here, I share a few stories that quickly come to mind.

The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home...

We hear this all the time, and let’s face it, no matter how many common rooms we have strewn with comfortable couches and chairs for entertaining and hanging out, we all seem to wind up in the kitchen. Builders spend thousands of dollars creating inviting and functional spaces with top-of-the-line appliances…Viking, Thermador, or LaCornue stoves; Sub-Zero refrigerators, cooling drawers, warming drawers, and steamers. Augmenting all these are butler’s pantries with coffee stations, wine coolers, and additional dishwashers. There’s enough stainless steel showing to blind anyone who dares to look straight on. So it was early on in my career when I was invited to evaluate a house that a couple was contemplating putting on the market way up in East Hampton’s Landfall area. After touring most of the residence, the lady of the house invited me to see the kitchen. She proudly marched me over to the stove and announced “See this? In the 10 years we’ve owned the house, it’s never been used!” Her husband winced a little, but it was a story I used every time I showed the house for sale. And you know what, I bet she wasn’t the only one who hasn’t used their stove or other appliances.

Law & Order…

For four years straight, I would find a rental for two families sharing a house for the summer. With a thriving law practice specializing in litigating personal injury lawsuits, the two partners and their families would alternate weekends of use. I rented them houses from Amagansett to Bridgehampton, both north and south of the highway, until one fateful year when they decided they wanted something year round to experience the Hamptons in the off season as well as the summer months. After all, if they ever bought anything, they wanted to understand what their off season usage might be. So I found them a wonderful little house on Jobs Lane from one Thanksgiving to the following Thanksgiving, just walking distance to the beach. And all was right with the world until I got an angry call demanding to know why I hadn’t disclosed that a house would startconstruction right in the middle of their yearly rental. They threatened lawsuits and hinted at the loss of my license. Soon, I understood how opposing counsel must have felt under their withering cross-examinations on behalf of one of their injured clients. I had to find them another house. Fortunately, one of my colleagues found another renter for their house who was less sensitive to noise. That was the last year they rented from me. Oh, but it wasn’t a sad story. Within two years, they both had purchased houses–from the broker they were going to sue, a fact they still laugh about today.

In 1492, Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue…

Angel View was the listing that put me on the map. It really did. A gargantuan but spectacular stucco, stone, and wood edifice on four levels of living space, Angel View spans six acres on three separate lots from West Banks into North Haven Point along Noyac Bay. It was conceived and built by one half of a European brother duo that in 1976 founded a leather, luggage and luxury goods manufacturing and retailing company. Think Coach with a German accent. Coming to market in 1997 for the then obscene price of $13.995 million. With no comps in sight, I nonetheless began the marketing process. Parties, open houses, and provocative copy–I tried it all. Then, one showing made it all worthwhile. A colleague requested a showing for one of his very high-end waterfront buyers. We began the tour with all the common rooms first, then descended into the lower levels of the house to see the indoor pool and home theater even further below. Finally, we went up to the second level to see all the bedrooms. Each door was emblazoned with the name of a famous European explorer. There was the Ferdinand Magellan room, the Vasco da Gama room, the Hernando de Soto room, the Vasco Nunez de Balboa room, and lastly, the Cristoforo Colombo room. As we were departing the second floor to view the grounds, the broker turned to me in full earshot of his buyer and asks, “What’s with the names on the doors? Are these friends of the owner?”
