Ralph Lauren shares, “Make the most of the centerpiece in your bedroom by dressing your bed as you would yourself–in layers. Begin with a complementary palette. Alternate patterns or stripes with solids for a classic look, or layer solids for a more modern impression.”

Start with a bed skirt: the proper bed skirt adds texture and an additional element of color. Try a second one and cinch it at each corner to create a tiered effect. Then, sheets; after applying a fitted sheet, draw the flat sheet to the head of the bed, and allow the other edges to hang freely. Fold the flat sheet over your bed blanket, and neatly tuck both the bed blanket and the top sheet under the mattress. Next, the pillows; start with two European shams (or “squares”) for a full-sized bed, or three for a king or queen. Rest the shams upright against the headboard. Layer two standard shams, followed by two standard bed pillows. Finally add the decorative throw pillows of your choice. Last but not least is the blanket. Your bed blanket’s weight and fabrication should be appropriate to the season–heavier wool or cashmere for winter, lighter cotton for summer. In addition to a bed blanket, a comforter or duvet is necessary. Fold the duvet or comforter one, two or three times, depending upon your style, and set it across the foot of the bed. A throw blanket or quilt adds an additional layer of color and texture and is the perfect finishing touch.

Earlier this week, visitors to Restoration Hardware’s Boston Back Bay store were in for a treat. The company (now known as RH) took over a 150-year-old landmark building (formerly the site of the New England Museum of Natural History) and gave it a dramatic luxury makeover, highlighting the site’s antique beauty by exposing elements such as the original vaulted ceiling. In addition, RH unveiled a magnificent 24-foot steel Eiffel Tower replica.

With many designers now choosing to renovate rather than remodel historic properties, this is a prime example of how a careful eye can make all the difference. For example, on the third floor RH installed a $1,895 trickling fountain, a $1,470 Provence wicker sofa, 1950s-style leather chairs that retail for $1,800 and the pièce de résistance, a glamorous $895 chandelier.

Restoration Hardware is opening galleries across the United States in California, Texas, and Arizona to help inspire luxury lifestyle designers. Carlos Alberini, the company’s CEO, told theBoston Globe: “Going into a space like this is extraordinary…this gives us an opportunity to really enhance the experience the customer is going to have interacting with the brand and our products.”

Haute couture designer Jason Wu has collaborated with home decor company Canvas on a highly covetable new collection. The eight-piece collection is the brainchild of Canvas founder Andrew Corrie and Wu, whose clothing is features regularly in magazines like Vogue. The resulting collection is both timeless and glamorous, with a coffee table, grand dining table, reclining benches, lighting and and pillows. The attention to detail in the design and choice of materials stands out, with hand-dyed linens for the sofa upholstery, hand-made lace detailing on the pillows. Each piece is made by craftsmen in the United States.

In an interview with Vogue, Wu described the impetus for the collection, his first foray into home decor. “It feels like I’m just filling in the pieces of the puzzle. I never thought of myself as being limited to fashion. I’m a designer and if you have a vision you can apply that to anything.” In turn,Corrie explained that Wu was a natural fit for a Canvas collaboration. “Jason has a spectacular taste level and an eye for detail which lends a wonderfully glamorous feel to everything.”

Zinc, one of the most innovative textile manufacturers in the design world, are celebrating the works of iconic fashion illustrator René Gruau. The company are set to unveil their highly-anticipated new ‘Runway’ collection, a fabric collection featuring the works of famed fashion illustrator René Gruau.

Zinc chose twelve of Gruau’s most iconic images to headline their January 2013 fashion-inspired ‘Runway’ collection. The launch of the collection during Art Basel coincides with the release of a major new book by Assouline called “Gruau: Portraits of Men”, as well as an exhibition of René Gruau’s works at the Pampaloni Gallery.

Japanese design studio Nendo have designed an incredible pop-up Starbucks coffee shop in Tokyo, Japan. The pop-up looks nothing like your usual Starbucks;instead, it has been designed to look like a library, with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves where customers can order drinks by taking specific books to the counter. In this concept store, the shelves are filled with books in nine different colors, each color representing nine drinks being served by the pop-up’s  baristas.

The sleeves serve a dual purpose; they also provide reading material about the famous chain’s coffee beans. Customers can exchange the book at the counter and keep the book’s sleeve as a memento.

On Nendo’s website, the design team explained; “The ‘library’ invites visitors to choose an espresso drink as they would a book, and verse themselves in espresso drinks as though quietly entering into a fictional world. Books and coffee are both important parts of everyday life, so we created a link between favorite books and favorite coffees.”

The pop-up shop was installed in the Omotesando neighborhood of Tokyo for the month of September.

World-renowned designer and TV personality Nate Berkus recently sat down with Elle Decor to discuss his latest book The Things That Matter (Spiegel & Grau). The book delves into Berkus’ own work, with a look at the designer’s own tips, like using gift wrapping paper to line drawers. Berkus shares that his “intention was not to make the book personal” but he concedes that he’s “not a particularly private person by anyone’s opinion.”

With intimate details like Berkus’ love for peeling the labels off of shampoo bottles and more, it is indeed a great glimpse into one of the great design minds working in the industry today. ”The one common thread between all the people in the book is that their stories and their pieces really tell the story of who they are,” says Berkus. “Which means it’s not all my work – it’s a mix of my own homes, friends who asked for my help, friends who didn’t want my help, and then strangers I met through the show.”

Financier Steven A. Greenberg’s Art Deco collection will be auctioned at Christie’s and to commemorate the occasion, Architectural Digest has republished one of our favorite design spreads, originally published in 1988, featuring his home and his collection.

“During the 1920s, furnishings and design took on a very distinctive look,” says Greenberg toArchitectural Digest. “It became known as Art Deco, a term stemming from the Paris Exhibition of 1925. I soon came to realize that the twenties were the last period when art importantly affected every element of the environment—specifically, dress and clothing design, jewelry design, book design, lighting design, furniture design and, perhaps most stunningly of all, architecture. No other aesthetic movement had such an influence—either in the thirties or in any other decade, down to our own.”

Greenburg reveals in the piece that his love for Art Deco came to be after he moved into 30 Rockefeller Plaza in 1977. Instead of hiring a professional designer, Greenberg studied design to handle everything himself. His endeavors had simple goals: ”the delectations of harmony and the pleasures of authenticity.”

Solange Knowles, star DJ, electrifying singer and sibling of super-celebrity Beyonce, moved to Brooklyn last year, and for those who admire Knowles’ ultra-cool, unique and natural style, they’ll be happy to find that her home is just as cool and unique as she is.

The townhouse home Knowles purchased is featured in the September issue of Elle, the iconic fashion magazine.  What one notices immediately about the residence is her signature bold, wild-colored, warm style.  Although different patterns and shapes abound, everything is nicely tied together, creating a serene, rather than chaotic vibe.

Knowles keeps the vibe calm and collected by going with neutral colored walls and furniture and using wildly-hued and patterned accessories to construct an inviting, cozy atmosphere.  Accessories used in the home are Moroccan rugs, pillows with heavy embroidery, and plants with striking, eye-catching blooms.  Her advice for mixing patterns, which she does so expertly, is to make sure that they are in the same fabric in order to maintain cohesion.

Featured throughout the living space is artwork by local and international artists, and adding style to her otherwise plain-jane wooden dining table  is a collection of china and tableware from Anthropologie and mc&co.

One thing is clearly evident when one looks at photos of Solange Knowles’ stunningly decorated home; she does her own thing when it comes to making a space hers.  The results of her efforts are like her; strong, chic, cool, unique and welcoming.

Louis Vuitton collaborated with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama to create a collection of garments featuring Kusama’s signature polka dot patterns for a concept store at the Selfridges department store in London.

Kusama is obsessed with polka dots—literally. The painter, poet and artist has even lived in a psychiatric institution since 1977 to help battle her obsession with the design, usually associated with a fun, quirky mood.

Louis Vuitton began to create materials, bags and shoes covered in bright red, yellow and black polka dots following its sponsorship of Kusama’s Tate exhibition earlier this year when the designer inspired the brand with her repetitive designs—something the designers at Louis Vuitton are all too familiar with.

Fittingly, the concept store is also immersed in polka dots—just like the pieces it houses, including a plastic trench coat that makes the wearer appear as though he or she is painted in spots, one of Kusama’s earlier ideas.

The boutique British wallpaper company Farrow & Ball have unveiled four new wallpaper designs that are the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary style. Each of the designs (Ocelot, Lattice, Tessella, and Crivelli Trellis) can be customized in five different colors, ranging from muted to bold, and even metallic.

Created using the brand’s bespoke paints, the collection is a discretely luxurious take on traditional wall paper themes such as animal print and geometric shapes. Our favorites include the rare Ocelot animal print, and the exquisitely detailed Lattice pattern.

Each pattern is available in five different color options (prices start at $255 per 10-meters).

Worldwide supplier of luxury window decor Coulisse has presented a collection of roller blind fabrics ranging from plain fabrics with a real textile look to delicate micro designs and expressive nature prints, helping to reinvent and refresh the often overlooked and underdressed window.

The Nature Print Collection brings fauna and flora into the home with organic prints inspired by Mother Nature, offering several unique prints in a range of hues taken from nature. This line works for roller blinds and is available in a width of 200 centimeters.

The Micro Fashion roller blind collection draws inspiration from the exclusive woven fabrics of Como, Italy, a city famed for its variety of exquisite textiles. The micro-theme relates to its fashion industry counterpart, in which clothing is decorated with small, repetitive designs. The collection is suitable for roller blinds as well, and 89 and 127-millimeter vertical blinds.

The Salone del Mobile transforms the city of Milan once again. In the 51st installment of this international Trade Show which took place from April 17 to 22 we were shifted through a labyrinth of design zones. From the center of exhibitions in Fiera RHO to the Experimental zones of Lambrate , Brera and Tortona and the only luxury point in the world, Montenapoleone, where design took form in many unexpected ways positioning Milan as the undefeated meeting point for design.

Celebrities Fashion and Design have always been related, but in this installment of Salone the evidence was clear. Celebrities and Fashion have made their way into the design world. Celebrities like Lenny Kravitz who reinvented the Mademoiselle, designed by Phillippe Starck for Kartell. Fashion Houses like Bottega Veneta, Marni, Maison Martin Margiela, Missoni, Calvin Klein, Versace, also showed their new Home collections.

Thousands of design afficionados from across the globe made their way into the worlds biggest trade show. This year the numbers where outstanding showing an increase in both exhibitors and visitors from previous years. There was a total of 2,700 Italian and foreign exhibitors at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, the International Furnishing & Accessories Exhibition, the SaloneSatellite and the biennial “EuroCucina”. A total of 331,649 visitors overall attended the 2012 Salone and 6,484 members of the communications industry, including 5,725 of them from countries all over the world.

House Beautiful’s annual Kitchen of the Year award was unveiled mid-month, and its display miraculously stood in Rockefeller Center for days despite temperatures rising to more than 95 degrees in Manhattan.

Chicago-based designer Mick De Giulio, who designed the space meant for indoor and outdoor use, said, “Kitchens can get very complicated. I wanted to keep this simple and classic. It’s also a little bit glamorous.”

A butler’s pantry with a Venetian-plastered cove ceiling makes us think Giulio is being modest when he says this kitchen is just a little bit glam. The 1,000-square-foot kitchen also features polished-nickel pendants, a Jonathan Adler for Kohler-designed navy sink and bold cabinet knobs. The space is unique with its custom oak table and mismatched chairs.

The iconic Ralph Lauren got the design world buzzing last week when he announced to Elle Decor that he has created a new home decor line comprising furniture, decorative accents, accessories and more. The RLH Collection will incorporate Lauren’s famous antique look, with pieces like a Tudor-style refectory table, an 18th-century French rustic style chair, wicker baskets and a wood winepress screw. A special emphasis is placed on the finishing of each piece, with the use of reclaimed wood and antique textiles. These pieces will represent the high quality associated with the Lauren name; each item from the line is hand-made, making every piece unique.

In an exclusive interview with Elle Decor, Ralph Lauren described the aesthetic the line captures; “I have always loved things that are worn and weathered, things that have a distinctive patina that evokes the past but brings a spirit of authenticity to the present. I love old wood tables and blue painted cupboards, the look of a vintage leather armchair that conjures up a certain way of living, and comfort that is timeless and never goes out of style. Most of all, I love pieces touched by the human hand, crafted by artisans with purposefulness and a personal aesthetic. The most beautiful homes have a touch of history, of memory, of things that have been passed along, living side by side with the very modern. For me, this is the very essence of personal style.”

Ralph Lauren founded his eponymous clothing company in 1967, and has since grown his design empire to a net worth of roughly $7.5 billion.

Bookcases offer an oft-overlooked opportunity to add an element of design which reflects your taste, style, and preferences. Interior design firm Trip Haenisch & Associates recently shared some pointers with CasaSugar on how you can curate your own bookcase.

•  Do something special with the top shelf of your bookcases. Check out the inspirational view from actress Diane Keaton’s library.
• Don’t hesitate to accessorize your bookshelf with items that have a personal significance. At designer Friederike Kemp Biggs’ Upper East Side home, everything from paintings to statues have their place on the bookshelf.
• Avoid a chaotic look by organizing the books by color and size: treat each shelf like an artistic display. At this Sally Sirkin Lewis-designed home, the organization of the books allows other elements, like the Le Corbusier Grand Confort armchair, to shine.

If you have company over and need a designated place for drinks, sometimes the most unexpected locations in your home can provide the perfect setting. Have a spare bookcase? Take a cue from designers Phoebe and Jim Howard and turn it into a make-shift bar. Got a spare (or relatively empty) closet? Decorate the walls and use the shelves for storing liquor. Don’t have space to spare? Make a quick bar on the surface of any table/desk. In fact, designer Meg Braff told House Beautiful that “a little bar tucked away in the corner of a living room is such welcoming gesture.”

World-renowned designer and TV personality Nate Berkus recently sat down with Elle Decor to discuss his latest book The Things That Matter (Spiegel & Grau). The book delves into Berkus’ own work, with a look at the designer’s own tips, like using gift wrapping paper to line drawers. Berkus shares that his “intention was not to make the book personal” but he concedes that he’s “not a particularly private person by anyone’s opinion.”

With intimate details like Berkus’ love for peeling the labels off of shampoo bottles and more, it is indeed a great glimpse into one of the great design minds working in the industry today. ”The one common thread between all the people in the book is that their stories and their pieces really tell the story of who they are,” says Berkus. “Which means it’s not all my work – it’s a mix of my own homes, friends who asked for my help, friends who didn’t want my help, and then strangers I met through the show.”
